CHAIRMAN’S CHAT

Hi folks, welcome and what a busy start it’s been to 2015 first we had the go karting at Grimsby which was a great success, unfortunately I could not make it but I’m told everyone enjoyed it. Next it was off to Cadwell and what a day / weekend, this year saw a few more alterations and streamlining of the setting up and thanks Ollie and his mate from Stuart Ranbys we had the 2 forklifts round the venue helping which really speeded things up. We did lose hours sleep but that cannot be helped (clocks changing). So with a few hours kip it was back to Cadwell and ready for the off, and after COC Tony Copes Drivers briefing we started as ever on time .As the day progressed it became apparent it was never going to dry up, which meant a few incidents as you would expect but that’s rallying. Even with the inclement weather spirits were high and everyone had a good day. My congratulations go out to all the winners of class’s and trophies, especially Dave and Alice Tinn on the overall victory after the problems they had with the car last year. I would also like to thank all the organising team, officials and competitors for making it another successful rally. Please keep any eye on the club website for all future events and activities. That’s it for me for now; I hope to see you all at the next meeting. Jonathan

News Go Karting With a lot more overtaking than your average F1 race it was certainly an exciting night. The race was a quick qualifying and then a 2 hour endurance race with driver swaps, it certainly took a fair bit of endurance to get back into the kart without ibuprofen! Only 8 laps separated the 4 teams with the top team having an incredible total of 291 laps in 2 hours. I think it’s fair to say everyone enjoyed themselves with a good bit of friendly competition.

R5 Rally Cars With the brand new Skoda Fabia R5 being revealed the R5 car list is growing steadily which, if budgets are able to stretch, should be very good news for the revamped BRC in which the R5 has also been named as one of the components of the championship (Borderlines Winter 2014). As it stands the car list is at 6, with the Citroen DS3 R5, Ford Fiesta R5, Vauxhall Corsa R5, Peugeot 208 R5 and then two new cars: the Mitsubishi Mirage R5 and Skoda Fabia R5. However with Skoda and Volkswagen both being part of the VAG group a Volkswagen Polo R5 seems unlikely as the group so far has ensured no competition between its brands. So far all established cars are competing in respective championships and the Mitsubishi Mirage has already had a competitive debut at Rally of North Wales,

finishing in the top 5 despite some issues namely a badly steamed windscreen (Heater needed!) , the Mirage finished 2 minutes behind the Ford Focus R5 of David Bogie but for a debut further development could see this as a competitive car. R5 requirements state it needs to be a 1600ccc turbocharged petrol. It also needs to be 4 wheel drive with a minimum weight of 1230Kg. This is so that the car can be a “stepping stone” into the WRC as it runs support class WRC-2, if competition is good in the BRC could also act as a good stepping stone for drivers to enter into the WRC. Some ex BRC drivers are already using R5 cars which will hopefully lead to drivers progressing to create a good championship, David Bogie is currently driving a Ford Fiesta R5 in the Scottish Rally Championship as well as other drivers who could slot straight into the championship, works teams getting involved, as Mitsubishi did in the 2000’s could lead to a brilliant championship.

Image from: Skoda Motorsport Facebook Page MSA congratulate Meeke and Evans on WRC success On behalf of the British motor sport community, the MSA congratulates Kris Meeke on becoming the first UK driver to win a round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) since his mentor, the late, great Colin McRae in 2002. With MSA Team UK’s Elfyn Evans taking his maiden podium in third place, it was a dream result for UK talent on the Rally Argentina. Meeke’s breakthrough win ends a 13-year victory drought for UK drivers in the WRC. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman and co-driver Paul Nagle won round four of this year’s championship in Argentina by just over 18 seconds aboard their Citroen DS 3 WRC. Behind them, 26-year-old Welshman Evans powered to his best result to date, reaching the podium in just his second season with the M-Sport squad, alongside codriver Daniel Barritt in their Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “What an incredible result and a real shot in the arm for UK rallying. It is fitting that the driver to finally emulate Colin McRae’s success at the top level should be his protégé. Kris has certainly done UK rallying proud and we are confident that this great victory will be the first of many. “We also couldn’t be happier for Elfyn, who we have been working with for a number of years on our MSA Team UK programme. His rate of progress since joining M-Sport has been a delight to watch and we look forward to having not one but two UK winners in the WRC very soon.”

Closed Road Motorsport A large step has been achieved in the pursuit of closed road motorsport in the UK. The Deregulation Bill in contains the frame work needed for running closed road motorsports. This legislation will mean that amendments or suspension of the road traffic act will not need an expensive act of parliament and therefore will be cheaper and easier to organise. This bill achieved Royal Assent on Thursday 26th of March, This means that only a small amount more legislation is needed which will take place after thee general election at which point the Bill would come into force. To organise such an event the Organisers must apply to the MSA for a Permit to run the event, the MSA will then contact the local authorities, police, highways etc. At this point the MSA will decide whether to issue a permit, if issued the organsing club must approach the highways authority to outline what roads will need shutting, the impacts and what benefits it could bring. The highways authority will then give the final permission and at that point the organisers will then organise the event as it would do for any other stage rally as normal.

EVENT REPORTS Jack Neal Memorial Rally, Blyton Park, 21st Feb – Stuart Diaper/Roy Bell 10th O/A 3rd in class. Phil Rowland/Phil Woodcock 14th O/A 4th in class. Roy co-driving for him on the Hall Trophy last year can’t have put off Stuart Diaper, as they teamed up again for a rematch that sadly did not happen on the day. Stuart Ranby had engine problems, and though Mick Pickles was there a slipping clutch that got worse throughout the day hampered his progress. A timing issue on the first stage gave numerous crews the bogey time, which saw some strange results at the end of SS1. The ‘bogey’ featured highly on this event, with the top two places being decided on the times from 4 stages only. The clerk of the course reckoned that although the stages were exactly the same as the 2014 Hall Trophy, times were around 30 seconds quicker! Think he wanted people to slow down!! With the top two in class 3 out of touch, and those below not near enough to challenge, Stuart/Roy backed off on the last stage to avoid anything nasty happening, losing a place in the process, but Stuart was very happy with the engine following a re-build.

Riponian Stages, Yorkshire Forests, 23rd February – John Wood/James Ducker 28th O/A 9th in class. John traded in the Subaru Impreza for something he could understand and fix, so was out in MKII Escort. Dry in the morning, but the stages were still very slippery. However by the afternoon repeat run rain/snow was falling, so it was even worse and not the ideal conditions for learning a new car. A team of Border MC marshals in stage and on the flying finish at Pry Rigg were there to cheer them on. Communication from FF to stop by hand helds, which went down both times after about 20 cars through. No hard wired back up, and if hadn’t been for the finish radio having a spare hand held, so being able to relay, would have had to rely on line of sight for times. Well done to the organising clubs of Ripon & Whitby for coming together to keep the event running, but they were kept on tenterhooks to the very end to get the minimum of 60 cars required. Woodbridge Stages, MOD Woodbridge, 29th March– Stuart Diaper/Roy Bell retired. Not been before so took up the offer to co-drive, and after SS1 11th O/A 6th in class, which Stuart was very happy with. Slightly damp for the first one, but with the rain starting changed tyres for SS2. All going well till a long straight with some raised crossovers saw the car aquaplane on standing water on the second one, and there followed one of those ‘when & where is it going to end’ moments, as the Escort went off and on (repeat a few times) scattering a few bits off stage furniture. Car behind reckons rear end up around 3 feet, so lucky not to dig in and roll. Set off and found OSR rim broken. Changed wheel, and off again but soon realised something else wrong. Panhard rod sheared off at bottom of the tower, so game over.
