editors letter

Here we are in May 2024, and wedding season is in full swing. As we release our 32nd issue, I’m all excited to see submissions from this year’s weddings. I’ll be the first to admit I follow A LOT of local photographers, and I’m already in love with some of the weddings they’ve dropped sneak peeks on. It’s always fun to see the new things photographers try and all the classic or traditional shots. I’m a sucker for those detail shots!

We have another set of five beautiful local love submissions, and let me tell you, all are swoon-worthy. The weddings are from August, October, November, and December last year. Plus, we have our first 2024 wedding submission that happened back in March. If something from these weddings catches your eye, check out their vendor list at the end of their submission.

Over the last year, I have noticed couples asking what the difference is between a wedding planner and a wedding manager. Look no further, friends, as I have broken down the difference in our article “Understanding the Difference: Wedding Planner vs. Wedding Manager.” Even though these two are different, they can work closely together as your wedding day approaches or even be the same person.

I was chatting with a vendor friend a few weeks ago about receptions and how some can be so long with nothing to entertain the guests while others are short and sweet. So how do you know what kind of reception you want for your wedding day? In the article “Wedding Receptions: Crafting the Perfect One,” we discuss an ideal duration and things to add to your reception to keep your guests and yourself entertained and the party going. You can find the article on page 54.

to give a shout-out to Jackie + Daniel and, Lauren + Justin. Congrats! We cannot wait to see photos from your big day and hear all about it.

As mentioned in my letter last issue, I have been obsessed with flowers. We had an article about how to choose your wedding flowers as well as an article about the popular spring flowers used in weddings. Continuing on that topic, this issue has an article about the popular flowers used during the summer season weddings. Some flowers are so popular that they are used in spring and summer. Either way, they are all beautiful, and I LOVE seeing how flowers are used at weddings.

As I wrap up this letter, I wanted to remind you again that we have added our vendor catalog to the back of our magazine. You can view our list of vendors anytime on our online vendor directory—more ways to see the area’s best wedding vendors.

Happy Reading, friends!

We didn’t have very many engagement submissions this time around, but we wanted 3

My husband and I are high school sweethearts. We had been dating since we were juniors in high school then seven years later we tied the knot. We both have country midwestern roots and it was important to incorporate that in our wedding. We also wanted a smaller ceremony and a bigger celebratory reception. We have so many great friends and family that have had the pleasure of watching not only us but our love grow. Our date is really special as it is just the day after our dating anniversary. We had amazing vendors like our photographer who captured our senior photos to the engagement then our special day! All our amazing photos just show how magical our day truly was. Our day was truly everything we wanted with all our special people and we wouldn’t have done anything differently.

Cierra + Lee An October Wedding

fromCierra

Lee and I started out as friends who talked every day for almost two years. I will admit I denied a few dates within this two-year time frame. Lee never lets me forget it: “I tried asking you out multiple times, and you always told me no.” Our first date was at Tower of Pizza in Quincy. It was followed by celebrating his birthday the next day and being his plus-one at a wedding reception.

One of the things I love about Lee, is he is always taking me by surprise. The week before we got engaged, we went on a Mexico trip with my family. Each day I was thinking, this is it. Today has to be the day he will pop the question. The vacation came and went with no ring. As disappointed as I was, little did I know what Lee had in store for me. Lee picked the perfect spot for our engagement, our first home together. He had the fireplace going, romantic music playing, and our fur babies around us. I couldn’t have wished for anything more than to spend it with my forever guy.

Fast-forward to our wedding day; it was everything we could have hoped for and more! Marrying your best friend is truly a blessing. We loved cherishing each moment with family and friends!

My husband and I met in math class at Quincy Senior High School. I asked a friend for his number and the rest is history. After dating for 10 years and being engaged for almost 3 of those, we finally tied the knot.

Our wedding day was nothing short of a dream. We celebrated our special day with our biggest blessing, our son Jackson. It’s safe to say he was the center of attention as Tim walked him down the aisle. Our first dance was shared with Jackson and there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd. We found out we were expecting a year before our wedding and getting to make him a big part of our day was the best part of planning.

The weather was beautiful, the florals were elegant and matched our soft natural theme perfectly. Our bridal party stunned in blush dresses and navy tux’s. Our day couldn’t have been complete without the love from our friends and family, and of course, the amazing vendors.

Blake and I grew up in the same small town but didn’t start to really get to know each other until we both moved to Quincy for college. Now, not only is he the love of my life but we truly are each others best friend.

My love started for Blake because he’s not afraid to take risks for and with me. He has the biggest and most supportive heart. Blake is the only person that can make me laugh until I cry, even in the times when I don’t feel like laughing at all.

For our wedding we wanted elegant and clean. I share a love for hydrangeas with my late grandmother so I wanted them everywhere and that is exactly what we did. Sara Reddick, our wedding planning, made everything we envisioned come together but better for us. We’re still talking about our day. Everything was perfect for us and just a dream to live.

Understanding the Difference: Wedding Planner vs. Wedding Manager

Weddings are momentous occasions filled with excitement and emotion, but behind the scenes, a great deal of organization and coordination is required to make the day seamless. The wedding planner and the wedding manager are critical roles in this process. While their titles may sound similar, their responsibilities and contributions differ significantly. Let’s distinguish these roles and highlight their importance in orchestrating the perfect wedding.

1. Defining the Roles: Wedding Planner:

- A wedding planner is similar to an architect, responsible for conceptualizing and designing the overall vision of the wedding.

- They collaborate closely with the couple to understand their preferences, style, and budget, translating their vision into a cohesive plan.

- Tasks typically include venue selection, vendor procurement (such as florists, caterers, photographers), theme development, and overall aesthetic coordination.

Wedding Manager:

- On the other hand, a wedding manager, also known as a wedding coordinator or day-of coordinator, focuses on the execution and logistics of the event itself.

- They step in closer to the wedding date to ensure that all the pieces come together seamlessly on the big day.

- Their responsibilities often encompass managing timelines, overseeing

vendor arrivals and setup, troubleshooting unforeseen issues, and ensuring that the event adheres to the established plan.

2. Timing and Scope:

-Wedding planners are typically involved from the early stages of wedding planning, sometimes months or years before the wedding date. They work with couples to establish budgets, select venues, and curate the overall ambiance and theme.

- Wedding managers, however, primarily step in during the final weeks leading up to the wedding, focusing on the logistical aspects and ensuring that everything runs smoothly on the day itself.

3. Collaborative Approach:

- While wedding planners take the lead in conceptualizing and designing the wedding, they often collaborate closely with the wedding manager to ensure a seamless transition from planning to execution.

- Effective communication and coordination between these roles are paramount to ensure the couple’s vision is flawlessly realized.

4. Flexibility and Problem-Solving:

- Wedding managers are great at thinking on their feet and resolving any issues that may arise during the event, from last-minute vendor hiccups to unforeseen weather challenges.

- Their ability to remain calm under pressure and find creative solutions is invaluable in ensuring that the wedding day proceeds without a hitch.

5. The Perfect Duo:

- While distinct in their roles, wedding planners and managers form a complementary duo, working hand in hand to bring the couple’s dream wedding to life.

- Together, they navigate the complexities of wedding planning and execution, allowing the couple to relax and savor every moment of their special day.

In the field of wedding planning, the roles of the wedding planner and wedding manager stand out as essential threads, each contributing its unique expertise to craft a memorable and seamless event. While the wedding planner lays the foundation and brings the couple’s vision to life, the wedding manager ensures that every detail is executed with precision and finesse on the wedding day. Together, they form a dynamic team dedicated to orchestrating the perfect celebration of love and commitment.

Crafting the Perfect One Wedding Receptions:

Awedding reception is a celebration that follows the vows exchanged by the bride and groom. It’s a time for laughter, joy, and creating unforgettable memories with loved ones. One of the key considerations in planning a wedding reception is determining its duration and ensuring there are ample activities to keep guests entertained. Let’s take a look at the ideal length of a wedding reception and explore some delightful activities to make it truly special.

The Ideal Duration:

The duration of a wedding reception can vary depending on various factors such as cultural traditions, budget, and personal preferences. However, a typical wedding reception often lasts between four to six hours. This timeframe allows for the progression of events without overwhelming guests or causing them to lose interest.

Activities to Consider:

1. Cocktail Hour:

Kick off the festivities with a lively cocktail hour where guests can mingle, sip on refreshing drinks, and indulge in delectable appetizers. This sets the tone for the evening and provides an opportunity for guests to socialize before the formalities begin.

2. Dinner and Toasts:

Following the cocktail hour, invite guests to the main dining area for a delicious meal. Whether it’s a plated dinner or a buffet-style feast, ensure there are options to cater to various dietary preferences. As dinner is served, heartfelt toasts from the newlyweds, family members, and friends can add a personal touch to the celebrations.

3. Dancing:

No wedding reception is complete without a dance floor! After dinner and toasts, transition into the dancing portion of the evening. Create a playlist that includes a mix of crowd-pleasing favorites and sentimental ballads to keep guests of all ages on their feet. Consider hiring a DJ or live band to further elevate the atmosphere with their musical talents. If you need ideas for your wedding day playlist, check out our article “Creating Your Reception Playlist” in issue 29, page 58, or head to our website and find it under our articles tab.

4. Entertainment:

Incorporate entertainment options to keep guests engaged throughout the reception. Photo booths with fun props allow guests to capture memorable moments, while lawn games or a themed trivia quiz add an

element of amusement. Additionally, surprise performances or cultural traditions can infuse the reception with excitement and cultural significance.

5. Dessert and Farewell:

As the evening draws to a close, treat guests to a delectable dessert spread featuring cakes, pastries, and sweet treats. This provides a final opportunity for guests to satisfy their sweet tooth before bidding farewell to the newlyweds. Consider a grand exit with sparklers or a vintage car send-off to conclude the reception on a high note.

Planning the perfect wedding reception involves striking a balance between duration and activities to ensure guests are thoroughly entertained from start to finish. By carefully curating the timeline and incorporating engaging activities, couples can create a celebration that reflects their love story and leaves a lasting impression on all who attend.

Love story:

Justin and I both attended Culver-Stockton College in Justin’s hometown of Canton, Missouri from 2010-2014. We both had several classes together, but never really hung out which seems strange now considering we have a lot of mutual friends. Periodically after college, we would Snapchat/Facebook message each other some talking about sports (mainly basketball).

Flash forward to early 2017. I am watching one of my brothers basketball games that he was playing in Germany on TV and I feel my phone go off and it is a message from Justin asking how the Illini West (my high school) boys basketball team was. He then went on to explain how he had an interview there coming up and how he knew absolutely nothing about Carthage, Illinois. I told him if he needed anything to let me know. A few months later, Justin got the job at Illini West. He was going to be the PE Teacher and head boys basketball coach. I was the assistant volleyball coach at Illini West. We would be around each other some due to being in the gym at the same time after school, as well as several get-togethers with all the other coaches, but I didn’t interact with him much so he could get to know the other coaches.

Flash forward again to summer 2019. Justin and I started to hang out a little more. He would go with me to my sand volleyball games in Quincy, we would meet each other up at Los Charros for margaritas, or we would sometimes drive around just listening to music with the windows down seeing what backroads we can explore. Everyone thought we were a *thing* but again, just friends.

In summer 2021, I guess you could say things got a little more serious. I called Justin to help me move things into my new house, he went to more of my sand volleyball games, and our dinner nights became more frequent. Late summer, (September 18th to be exact) we decided to go to a Cardinals game together and that is where we say our story began. These last 2 years have been the best years of my life, and I wouldn’t want to spend them with anyone else.

The Engagement:

June 2, 2023 - Destin, Florida. This year Justin’s family planned to go to Destin, Florida for their family vacation. I was so excited!! Getting to spend a whole week in Florida? Yes please! Little did I know Justin had a little something special planned for our second day there. The day started off with us planning to go out to a little breakfast restaurant we found driving around and to spend the rest of the day at the beach. It was a beautiful day! The sun was shining and the temperature of the ocean was perfect! After being on the beach for awhile we decided

Hut for an appetizer and a drink before we went back to the condo to hang out with the rest of the family. When we got back to the condo we were sitting on our back patio with everyone discussing our dinner plans for the evening. Justin’s sister, Jordyn, suggested we go to The Crab Trap to eat. Once I started looking at the menu I mentioned I should probably go shower and get ready because it looked like a nicer place to eat. I didn’t think the restaurant would appreciate me in my swimsuit coverup with a messy bun on top of my head and flip flops. Before I went up to shower and get ready I asked if we should do our family pictures on the beach all wearing our white outfits like we had planned prior to the trip. Justin’s mom, Crystal, thought this sounded like a great idea. In my mind I was hoping everyone would say yes to getting family pictures that night because my spray tan was still fresh. ;) Little did I know this was perfect in Justin’s head because he had a little something special planned for after dinner. We then went to dinner, had a fabulous meal, and then started walking down to get pictures on the beach. Before walking down the steps towards the water I thought Justin was going to get sick. He was coughing and didn’t look like he felt good. When I asked him what was wrong he said he was just really full. (That should have been my first clue! lol.) We then started walking down the steps towards the beach and Justin wrapped his arms around my waist super tight. After a few steps he started talking to me about how apparently I made a comment at dinner the night before saying I would love to get engaged on a beach some day because of how pretty it is. He then proceeded to say how much he loved me as he got down on one knee and popped the question with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen.

Well, as the warmth of summer approaches, so does the season for weddings blossoming with vibrant colors and fragrant blooms. Choosing the right flowers can set the tone for a magical summer wedding, transforming venues into dreamy landscapes. Below, you will find some popular wedding flowers for the summer season. Known for its enchanting fragrance and delicate purple blooms, it infuses summer weddings with rustic charm and tranquility. Whether used in bouquets, boutonnieres, or as decorative accents, lavender adds a fragrant, whimsical allure to any celebration. “Lavender is perfect for couples seeking a natural, eco-friendly vibe,” suggests Hannah, floral designer at Lavender Lane. “It not only looks beautiful but also fills the air with its calming scent, creating a serene ambiance.”
