NIELS VAN ROOYEN

CORNELIUS

FOR THE COLLECTION I WANTED TO MAKE SOMETHING ENGLISH YET WEARABLE FOR THE DANES.

A creative mind is never idle. There is always work to be done and more beauty to be added to the world. Such is the credo of Mister Cornelius Van Rooyen, a jolly conversationalist and a mainstay in the world of luxury wares and timeless classics. He’s traversed the globe and dressed royalty while being the creative force behind influential brands. Now, on the brink of his 65th summer, he’s embarking on a new journey in a new country and shows no signs of slowing down.

Van Rooyen’s beginning was humble, growing up in the country side of South Africa. “I had the most amazing childhood,” he says, “In my youth, I was always taught to let nature be your teacher. I learned from nature, I respect nature and I receive a lot of inspiration from nature. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better teacher of aesthetics than the landscape and life of South Africa.” His surroundings and the unique constellation of an adventurous South African father and an English artistic mother gave Van Rooyen a distinct world view. His father bestowed upon him the value of patience and hard work while his mother demonstrated the power of creativity.

He has carried these traits with him throughout his career, applying himself and fostering a sense of sophisticated subtlety in his many projects. His professional life kicked off in 1986 when Van Rooyen relocated to London to work for Alfred Dunhill where he became the manager of the flagship store in St. James. During this time, he was simultaneously overseeing concessions for Harvey Nichols and Harrods. Eventually, he was headhunted by Holland & Holland where he spent 21 years of his illustrious career. After six years as Creative Director for the brand – designing collections, creating events around the world and catering to high profile clients – Holland & Holland decided to restructure and Van Rooyen left for new opportunities.

The perfect new opportunity knocked promptly on his door. Mister Van Rooyen is now launching his own luxury hunting line, Cornelius London, in partnership with Nancke Jagtliv. This catalogue tells its story.

It’s during these times that one is reminded of life’s delightful little victories, that one should always dare to dream. For Nancke Jagtliv, one of those times is now. The shop has the distinct honour of carrying an exclusive line of hunting goods and apparel designed by Cornelius Van Rooyen – one of the creative minds of Holland & Holland for over 20 years.

For most of his career, Van Rooyen has been called ‘Niels’ – a hypocorism of his given name. With this new venture, however, the designer is taking ownership of a collection all his own, reflective of his taste and his vision. The collection’s name, Cornelius London, is a miniature biography that honours both his birth name and the city he has called home for over 25 years. Cornelius London is an impressive line of garments and goods celebrating British sport tradition.

With an established partnership and creative direction, it was time to get to the practicalities of making Cornelius London a reality. Enter Justin Sumrie, the former Director of Sourcing at Holland & Holland who now heads his own consulting company. Van Rooyen recruited his old colleague to source high-calibre but conscientious materials for the line. Logistically, this was a marvellous move as it allows Nancke Jagtliv and Van Rooyen to work with a single supplier who has oversight over all products and processes instead of multiple different companies for each piece. Every swatch of fabric and every domesticated horn button has a direct line to its source and production in London. In the world of luxury goods, this is paramount to ensuring quality pieces that can endure.

The collaboration between the shop and Van Rooyen has presented a unique gift to the realm of luxury hunting. Goods steeped in English tradition but laced with a touch of Danish ingenuity, Cornelius London provides an honourable yet refreshing take on the prestigious ritual of hunting.

What does the full line consist of, the fruits of all this labour? Cornelius London offers a variety of attire and accessories such as a tweed shooting coat, vest and breeks; to tattersall, gingham and herringbone hunting shirts; lambswool V-neck knitwear; cashmere cable knitwear and much much more.

As it is available exclusively in-store, one must take to Nancke Jagtliv shop in Gentofte, Denmark to stand in the convergence of these two prominent paths.

NANCKE JAGTLIV

“IT’S A WILD LIFE”

APPROACHABILITYISTHEWORDTHATFIRSTCROSSESYOURMIND, WHEN YOU OPENTHEDOOR TO NANCKE JAGTLIV.

And this has been an important part of the shop’s DNA even before it opened for business. Gigantic hunting trophies and old photos adorn the walls. Green lounge chairs huddle around a fireplace that preside over hunting equipment, shooting arms, acres of tweed and fashionable leisure clothing, creating an atmosphere of a British country house turned modern hunting cabin. It’s a version 2.0 of a place where Hemmingway might swing by; where hunters and nonhunters shop side by side for hunting gear or outdoor leisurewear.

But it’s not only the surroundings, which are remarkable. It’s also the sound advice and passion for hunting the owners share with all the shop’s visitors.

Hunting is not all about the lonely hunter. Shooting parties, as opposed to stalking, are social events, as much about networking as hunting, both during and after the hunt. And Nancke Jagtliv can provide just the right wardrobe for all these occasions. The owners carefully select every single garment or piece of equipment for the store, just like curators picking art pieces for an exhibition.

In Nancke Jagtliv, you clearly sense that hunting apparel is more than just quality outdoor leisure clothing. Now it has become fashionable too. Many young people are attracted to the clothing style and often show up to their first hunt looking every inch the hunter. And the hunting trend is also resonating with ordinary people. It’s practical clothing which lets you relax in style.

“We will pleasantly surprise the customer by how we will style the whole collection together. It really tells a story”

THANK YOU

This catalogue would not have been possible without the help and contribution from a lot of good friends.

We would like to thank Media Link and Johnsen Graphic Solutions, this project would never have left the ground, without these two.

Robin Skjoldborg for taking the lovely photographs.

Nereya Otieno for writing text and conducting interviews. Finn B. Rasmussen and Henrik T. Andersen for helping out with everything before, during and after the shoot.

Jurgen Bender Graphic design for making it all look good and Jaguar Land Rover Denmark for supplying the relevant wheels.

We have used props from the following brands, all represented in the store : Bromfield, Croots, Rey Pavon, Franken & Cie, Kent and Peltor.

We shot the catalogue at a big and beautiful estate in the south of Zealand. The estate boasts of a vast area of hunting grounds with trophy size roe bucks, lots of pheasants, ducks and an extensive coastline, to hunt migratory geese too. We are grateful for the oppurtunity to have spent a day in these extraordinary sourroundings.

Thank you!
