Greetings in the super futuristic year A.D. 2015, and thanks so much for attending the 8th annual Boomtown Film & Music Festival in bodacious Beaumont, Texas! It’s a big year for BoomFest. Not only did we receive nearly a thousand films from all over the world, far more than ever before, but 2015 marks the year in which we have officially existed longer than that groovy trailblazing event that inspired us to dream: Lamar University’s Spindletop Film Festival. Also this year Boomtown returns home to several of its outstanding original venues: The Art Studio Inc., the Art Museum of Southeast Texas and the glorious Jefferson Theatre.

With twenty live music performances and over fifty film screenings spread out across half a dozen venues and three days, making this event happen involves an amount of work beyond my poor power to articulate in these few lines. I’ve been with BoomFest since the beginning, but if it relied on me then this opera would have fallen apart years ago. It exists because of people like Bryan Lee, Olivia Busceme, and all the others you see listed here among the organizers. I begged the privilege of writing this intro, a task that otherwise wouldn’t have fallen to me, just so I could draw attention to these heroes who generously gave their time and talent and wrought the Boomtown Film & Music Festival into existence purely for the love of art. This festival is their costly gift to Southeast Texas and I am in awe of them. And what a festival they’ve put together for you, Future-boys and Future-girls (and any robots that may be reading this). The 2015 Boomtown Film & Music Festival is a music marathon and cinematic smorgasbord that’s literally too big for any one person to take in. But boy it’s going to be fun to try!

2015 BOOMTOWN PAN’S LABYRINTH (121 min, 2006) Friday, Feb 27th 7:30pm – Jefferson Theatre In 1944 Spain young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her ailing mother (Ariadna Gil) arrive at the post of her mother’s new husband (Sergi López), a sadistic army officer who is trying to quell a guerrilla uprising. While exploring an ancient maze, Ofelia encounters the faun Pan, who tells her that she is a legendary lost princess and must complete three dangerous tasks in order to claim immortality.

Without physical evidence or a clear motive, the doctor’s family doubts his guilt. 75 years later, Weiss’s son and his family delve into an intriguing past to question the official story.

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (91 min, 1975) Saturday, Feb 28th 8pm – Jefferson Theatre A comedic send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen.

LOVERZZZ Connie and Richard are on their second date, it looks like any other second date... but the night, and a fly, will surprise both of them.

DRINK (California, 23min) Director: Emily Moss Wilson DRINK is a sci-fi cautionary tale that follows Alice and her two sons, Clint and Billy, as they flee their home in the middle of the night. They arrive at an old desert motel, and it doesn’t take long before Alice realizes she has a strange connection to this place.

A tragedy of the past begins to reveal secret desires that could send Alice down a path of freedom or insanity.

MASTER HOA’S REQUIEM (Texas, 18min) Director: Scott Edwards Vietnamese martial arts master, Ngyuen Hoa, returns to Southeast Asia to look for the graves of his wife and children, but will it help him find closure?

LANDLORD (California, 25min) Director: Jessica Naudziunas Landlord is a film that looks to both sides, the money hungry landlord on the hunt for the highest price per unit and the saintly tenant who will do anything to stay where he has throughout countless waves of gentrification.

ROMY, I AM SHY (Germany, 15min) Director: Andreas Grützner Juergen Vollmer met The Beatles in 1960 in Hamburg Music Club, Kaiserkeller. Vollmer started photographing them, and sure enough they met again in Paris. The story is recapped in a montage of animated sequences, interviews and original artist photos.

NOT ANYMORE: A STORY OF REVOLUTION (New York, 15min) Director: Matthew VanDyke A documentary short film that tells the story of the Syrian struggle for freedom as experienced by a 32 year old rebel fighter, Mowya, and a 24 year old female journalist, Nour, in Aleppo, Syria.

ATOMIC CITY (Idaho, 27 min) Director: David McMurry Atomic City is a meditation on the town of Arco, Idaho, the first city in the world lit electrically with atomic power.

TORTURING (Germany, 4 min) Director: Rebecca Blöcher The film is based on the poem of the same name by Etta Streicher. It is concerned with not speaking out, keeping your feet still or actually biting the bullet and achieving inner freedom. And about how individual mental states influence the world.

WHAT ARE YOU? (US, 3min) An experimental half stop-motion animation, half live-action metaphorical look at the effects of warped body image and media on the stability of a teenage girl.

A MUSICAL LIFETIME (France, 3min) Director: Erwan Le Gal From the cradle to the grave, a life in music.

MIRROR IN MIND (Korea, 2min) Director: Seung Hee Kim A woman looks into her mind. Chasing her ideals on a tightrope. Every imperfect piece of her mind completes herself.

SKUNK (Austin, 16min) fourteen-year-old Leila’s deepest connection is with her pack of rescued dogs. When her beloved pit bull is stolen by an aspiring dog fighter, Leila is forced to stand up for herself, at the cost of her own innocence.
