Documentary Features Killing Time Friday, 7pm-Dishman Art Museum (54min, 2013) Directed By: Jaap van Hoewijk Texas Premiere

6 February 1998: Erin is home alone in Port Arthur, TX when a masked man suddenly appears in her living room.

12 June 2013: Preparations are underway at Huntsville State Penitentiary for the execution of Elroy Chester by lethal injection for the rape of Erin and Claire DeLeon and the murder of their uncle, fireman Billy Ryman.

Killing Time reconstructs an old murder and documents the hours leading up to the convicted man’s execution. We see the families on both sides, the prison guards, the pastors, the journalists and even demonstrators; everyone has their own way of killing the last few hours of Elroy Chester’s life.

Jazz The Only Way of Life Saturday, 10am- AMSET

(1hr 13min, 2017, Switzerland) Director: Jacques Matthey Synopsis: Dizzy Gillespie is one of the major figures of the 20th Century’s music scene. Everything was once said or written about this genius musician, founder of the Bebop. Whereas his public life is known from most, many ignore about the modest side of his character and the story of his long and deep friendship with a man rather unknown from the general public, the Swiss engineer Jacques Muyal. Through previously unrevealed archives as well as musical extracts, this documentary explores the story of the friendship between a genius trumpeter and a man crazy about Jazz.

(58min, 2017, Texas) Director: Glen Muse Executive producer in attendance The film explores the dangers of synthetic cannabinoids (Kush, Spice, etc.).

With real-world footage and first-hand accounts from users, former users, counselors, first responders, law enforcement and others, this documentary tells of some of the terrible tragedies this terrible drug can inflict on users and their families.

This documentary was produced in Baytown, TX with the help of a team of high school and college students interested in filmmaking.

Home Grown Shorts BoomFest 2018 kicks off with this special collection of shorts with roots in Southeast Texas.

Blacksmith

(16 min, 2017) Director: Frank DiCesare Documentary that highlights the work of Rob Flurry, the resident blacksmith at the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum in Beaumont, Texas. Unlike the blacksmiths portrayed in the media today, Flurry’s craftsmanship is that of the old-school artisan – no expensive equipment; no modern forge in which to work. Instead, Flurry relies solely on nature’s elements of fire, iron, air, and water (along with his own strength) to hammer out beautiful creations within the smoky furnace of his shop.

Panel Bios Heather Benson

Three time award winning Union Special Effects makeup artist and creature creator for Film and Television, with 10 years of experience. She has worked on major productions for Universal Studios and has traveled the world creating unique characters.

Katie Cokinos

Katie discovered film while studying History and Philosophy at Texas A&M University and was so moved by the Vietnam War documentary, Hearts and Minds, and inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander, that she created The Art Film Society. She began her professional journey in Houston as an administrative assistant at one of the oldest and most revered media arts organization in the country, Southwest Alternate Media Project (1988 – 1990) and produced Eagle Pennell’s independent film, Heart Full of Soul (1990).

After moving to Austin she became the Managing Director of the Austin Film Society (1990 - 95) and was the first publicist for Richard Linklater’s Slacker (1990). As a location manager, I worked on Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, (1994); Love and a .45 (1994); and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, (1993, asst. locations). Before leaving Austin, Katie directed several short films and wrote, directed and starred in the featurette Portrait of a Girl as a Young Cat (2000), which premiered at SXSW. In 2015 Katie wrote and directed her first feature film, I Dream Too Much, which screened at a number of film festivals, is distributed by The Orchard, and is available on Netflix. She is am currently writing a feature narrative screenplay, The Nature of Things, and sit on the Advisory Boards of the Houston Cinema Arts Festival and Middle Coast Film Festival. I live with my family in New York’s Hudson Valley.

Aaron B. Koontz

Aaron has had a diverse entertainment background that spans 15+ years in Film, Games, Social Media and more. He’s worked in various roles for creative companies like EA, THQ, Universal Studios Production Group (in which he worked with major studio films like The Punisher, Monster, and 2 Fast 2 Furious), Fjord & Zynga. In 2012, he founded the boutique genre production outfit Paper Street Pictures in Austin, Texas, the Executive Producer of the SXSW Midnight Selection, STARRY EYES, the Director/ Writer/Producer of the Psychological Thriller CAMERA OBSCURA for NBC/ Universal, and currently Aaron is wrapping production on the Meta Horror-Comedy SCARE PACKAGE where he was the Creator and Lead Producer as well as the Director of the final segment, HORROR HYPOTHESIS. Aaron and his Paper Street team are also in development of 3 other feature films, the first of which slated to going into production this fall, a television series and a documentary shooting in Ohio this June.

Joe Lansdale

Joe R. Lansdale is the author of over forty novels and four hundred, give or take, short stories, articles and essays. His work has appeared in numerous languages and editions. He has received the Bram Stoker Award ten times, eleven counting the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Horror Writers Association. He has received The Edgar for his novel, The Bottoms, the Spur, Herodotus Award, Ink Pot Award, has been inducted into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame, and is a Grandmaster of the Horror Writers Association, as well as the recipient of numerous other awards.

Several films and TV shows have been made from his work, including the films Cold in July and Bubba Hotep, as well as Incident on and Off a Mountain Road for Showtime as part of the Master’s of Horror series.

Currently, his Hap and Leonard series is into it’s third season on Sundance TV. He is also a lifelong martial artist and is in the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame, as well as the International Hall of Fame.

Anita Long Anita Long is a storyteller, documentary filmmaker, publisher, publicist and digital media consultant.

As a filmmaker, she has co-produced and directed many educational documentaries for PBS and was also responsible for overseeing a National Initiative to Encourage Youth Across America to document the lives of veterans in their communities.

Her most recent venture is a voice of youth program called “Raising Young Filmmakers” a curriculum designed for middle-school and high school students. In other fields of endeavor, Anita is currently the Managing Editor of International Focus Magazine and the most Immediate Past President of Women in Film and Television Houston.

Anita has been awarded medals by the Smithsonian Institution and has films in the Permanent Research Collection housed at the National Museum of American History; her work is published in the Library of Congress.

Examples of her work are in more than 30 museums and libraries around the country. Anita was nominated one of the most influential women in Silicon Valley and has received official recognition from the City of San Jose, the State of California, the U.S. Justice Department, the U.S. Defense Department, and the United States Congress. Her former clients include the head offices of Adobe, Intel, Hewlett Packard, IBM, NASA, and many other large national and international corporations.

Molly Vernon A seasoned film and theatre professional in Houston, Texas with over 65 IMDb credits to her name. She is an award winning filmmaker and is currently a Digital Film and Video Production Adjunct Professor at The Art institute - Houston and VP of Women in Film & Television – Houston in conjunction with her film production work. Molly works as an Assistant Director, Unit Production Manager, Production Coordinator, and Producer on local Texas films and is also a noted Director, Writer, and Editor.

In 2015 her short film RED PEARL won the Special Jury Award for Best Film Depicting Benefits to Man Kind from the Int’l Space Station from NASA for the first NASA/CineSpace Contest which has screened on PBS and won multiple awards at many festivals since its NASA win. She is partnered with cinematographer Larry McKee in the production company Vernon-McKee, where they have produced the short films COLD WAR, PERSISTENCE OF VISION, THE VOID, RED PEARL, INTO THE LIGHT, BIOMASS and ABIDE. She’s currently in development is the short historic film LILLIAN and the feature length film LAS TIAS.

Panel Bios Clinton Rawls (moderator):

Clinton Rawls is an Instructor of Humanities at the Lamar Institute of Technology and an Adjunct Instructor of Film and Video at Lamar University. In his life and career, Clinton has been a commercial producer, a broadcast journalist, a filmmaker for hire, and most importantly a teacher. Under the tutelage of the late Andy Anderson at the University of Texas at Arlington, Clinton learned the most valuable lesson of all: always be a student.

Jennifer Waldo (moderator):

A native of Washington, DC, Jenny graduated from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with a MFA in Film Production where she won a coveted directing scholarship and focused on writing, directing, and producing scripted and documentary films. Her most recent short film ACID TEST is currently in festivals including BendFilm and Austin Film Festival and is being developed into a feature film. Other recent shorts include writing/directing SISTERS (2016 Women in Film and Television International Shortcase) and producing MEGGAN’S JOURNEY (2017 Boomtown Festival) and NEXT EXIT (2017 Maryland Film Festival). Past credits include producing on the feature THE PREACHER’S DAUGHTER (2013) (Lifetime Movie Network) and the

feature documentary THE CUTTING EDGE: THE MAGIC OF MOVIE EDITING (2004) (Starz). Jenny teaches scripted and documentary production at Houston Community College’s Filmmaking Program and screenwriting at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA).

Gordon S. Williams (moderator):

Gordon S. Williams is a graduate of Lamar University with

a Bachelor of Science in Communication with an emphasis in Broadcasting. Williams is a multi-award winning writer, producer, and director for his company G Sharp Productions and LUTV Productions. The seventh short film the he wrote and co-produced “The Example” has been accepted to over 30 film festivals/venues, received 13 awards, and has garnered distribution deals from Amazon Video, Shorts International, Kweli.TV, and Indieflix. Currently, Gordon is the Television Studio Operations Manager at Lamar University and a producer/director for the Big Red Sports Network and ESPN3.

Kevin Forrest Clark is a singer, songwriter, and actor, managed and presented by Shore Crest Music Group. His first single “Five Foot Feisty” dropped on multiple platforms on August 25, 2017. The self-titled EP The Singles will be released shortly.

Kevin is a native Texan, born and raised in Sherman. He began singing and learning instruments early and appeared in numerous theatre productions.

A duo of the remaining band members of the former Hebrew punk rock band WeSuck. Yoni Avittan plays guitar and sings, Ran Aaronson plays bass lines on keyboard while drumming one-handed. Yoni and Ran changed their music from Hebrew to English and formed Dodies. In 2016 they recorded, produced, mixed and independently released their first album “It’s One Hell of a Ride” recorded in Ran’s room. That same year they released the video of their song ‘Suburban Nights’ on YouTube. In 2017 Dodies came to America! They recorded the first songs of their next album at ORB Studios in Austin, Texas.

As the frontwoman for electronica trio BLSHS, she enjoyed multiple festival appearances, countless words of praise in the media, and a grueling schedule of tour dates and sets at places like CMJ Music Marathon and SXSW. However, after work stalled on the follow up to BLSHS debut album, she began a journey that would start with a question and end with a whole new solo project. That project, known simply as MIEARS, found the singer writing, producing, performing, and recording the solo effort.

Special Events Stage Reading of “Unpredictable” by Beaumont Community Players

Thursday 7:30pm - Dishman Art Museum The Beaumont Community Players will be performing a live staged reading of this year’s award-winning screenplay ‘Unpredictable’, written by Eileen Cook and Allison Beda, in which a young woman pretends to have psychic powers to win back her ex-boyfriend, but fails to predict how much trouble it will get her into. John Manfredi, Executive Director of Beaumont Community Players, was instrumental in judging the feature screenplays and selecting Unpredictable and this production will be directed by Ryan A. White, a Beaumont Community Players veteran.
