July’s arrived, and it bears gifts.

This month, two of the world’s biggest names in music land in our midst - on the same night!

Electronic fans, book your tickets to Macau for Deadmau5 on the 22nd, who we introduce a little more to you in our A-Side (P14). Back in Hong Kong, influential Brit band Blur flies into the HKCEC. In our Special Feature (P22) we chat with drummer Dave Rowntree about new album The Magic Whip, which was recorded in our very own streets.

Also recorded in Hong Kong is local dream pop band Thud’s new Floret E.P, and over in Macau, alt. trio Turtle Giant gear up to release their second full-length album, Many Mansions I, recorded in a local theatre. Check out our interviews with the bands, who both have strong opinions on the music scene in Asia (P18). Down in the underground scene, Oliver Clasper gets up close and personal with IDM innovator Lee Gamble in On the Decks (P26) after an exquisite set at The Empty Gallery. Multi-award winning alt-rock band OK Go, based in LA, shot to fame online with their impressively choreographed one-take music videos. Presented in Hong Kong for the second time by Your Mum (after a sold out show in 2010), the group returns to KITEC with fresh material up their sleeve.

Many years later, they land in Hong Kong, courtesy of Songs For Children.

Summer Sonic Festival, Chiba & Osaka

Next month, Chiba (just outside of Tokyo) and Osaka share between them some of the most prominent names in rock, pop and indie. Among the headliners are The Chemical Brothers, Pharrell Williams, Imagine Dragons, D’Angelo and the Vanguard, and Manic Street Preachers. This list goes on and on, and don’t forget to check out Sonicmania on the 14th, where electronica takes over for the less rock-inclined music fans. This month they’ve teamed up with Snaptee, an app based in Hong Kong that allows you to design your own t-shirt with your own photos.

oel Zimmerman, aka deadmau5, is an extension to his computer, to the point that the video game characters he grew up with have crawled out of the screen and imprinted themselves onto his skin. An electric green space invader rests on the right of his neck, and 8-bit life-up Minecraft hearts bleep on his left forearm (not to mention his full sleeve of Cthulhu tentacle porn and a paean to his Twitter-certified cat Professor Meowingtons on his collar). The

Toronto-bred producer has grown to become an emblem in dance music culture, through a vast knowledge of technology, an entertaining online presence, and an unmatched aptitude to stay three steps ahead of dance music’s cutting edge.

In an interview, Zimmerman once described himself as “more of a tech guy than a musician”. Having learnt the piano at a young age, there is some musical proficiency underneath the iconic Mau5head he sports on stage, but for the most part

world. In an interview, he said “it’s all about being versatile across a lot of subgenres.” Zimmerman scrunches up his nose at the sound of the term ‘EDM’, though he consistently finds himself headlining key events for the multi-billion dollar industry.

He even claims to have ‘sold-out’ once, releasing dubstep during its brief revival at the beginning of the decade, just because he could.

His boundaries as a producer are endless, having received Beatport Awards for both Best Electro House Artist and Best Progressive House Artist, and six Grammy nominations for remixing and dance music production as a whole. The dexterity of his live performances, which he often streams online directly from his studio, has also anchored infinite respect from underground producers.

His online presence has played a major role in his international fame. Unlike so many big names, Zimmerman makes a conscious effort to interact with his fanbase (whom he calls ‘The Horde’) on a regular basis - and not just through personal replies on Twitter. Often sitting down on his online forum ‘Deadmau5 Live’, he relaxes and chats with followers. In 2011 he held a competition for fans to design his next mau5head (the winner was yellow with holes in the style of Swiss Cheese). In 2012, producing his album >album title goes here< live online, he called for some help on the vocal track, ultimately using a fan’ called Chris James’ vocal track on legendary track, ‘The Veldt’.

Bred in the local music scene, Turtle Giant and Thud have made serious international waves. Both gearing up for new releases, we catch up with them to find out how.

athedral Café: the chill out corner on the pebbled Rua de Se, Macau, where locals and expats alike cruise in on their motorbikes after work, and the artistic gather to wind down. Look a little closer, you might notice a member or two of Turtle Giant, the band that grew from seed to blossoming, international flower while living in those very streets.

Formed by brothers Beto And Fred Ritchie (who, at the time of this interview, was settling into his new home in LA), and rounded off with pogonotrophic vocalist António Conceição, Turtle Giant has appeared on lineups at some of the most prestigious festivals in the world. The infamous SXSW in Austin, Texas, presented them to eager audiophiles alongside Iron & Wine and The Zombies on the KEXP stage in 2013, with help from the exalted Seattle radio station itself.

The trio has performed at almost all of the major indie festivals in Asia, including Clockenflap in 2013 and Spring Scream in Taiwan, as well as supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra at Grappa’s Cellar last January, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in Vietnam just weeks before.

With recognition widely cultivated in the North American music scene, where college radio and NPR sit on the throne when it comes to launching new talent in the alternative industry, Turtle Giant in fact spent most of their time together in Macau after winding up there together in 2012. “I don’t think we fall into the category of a band that’s influenced by Asia in the way that we produce. We do our songs based on the kind of music that we like.” says António, a cigarette between his finger and thumb.

“But being in Macau - it was easy to get together, and just write and be together. In a bigger city - for example, when we were in the US - we’d find it hard to get everything together, time-wise, money-wise, getting a rehearsal spot, etc.”

The band, as with so many local indie acts, are in agreement that Hong Kong and Macau is limiting in terms of live performance. “It’s awesome playing in Asia,” António

notes, “but not many people here are craving the music we play as much as other markets do.” Beto stands optimistic about the future of indie music in Asia. “If there’s a band that really identifies with the people, then I think it can break into the mainstream,” he says. “There are already bands like Carsick Cars in Beijing who have a pretty good fan base in China; especially in Beijing.”

After rising into the spotlight after energetic single ‘We Were Kids’ spread organically across social media and music platforms in 2012, Turtle Giant is well trained in the life of a modern, burgeoning indie band.

António brings to light an interesting perspective: “The continuous process of being able to play shows is what gives a band more buzz.

Since we don’t have that many chances to play together anymore, everything kind of goes down again.

So you have to build everything up all over again.”

At the time of publishing, the trio will have released their latest LP,

Many Mansions I, and it’s safe to say we can expect new Turtle Giant tour dates towards the end of the year.

Raring to go for a while, the LP was delayed as a result of, in António’s words, “some fucking extraordinary plasma burst at the equator, that made it so the stars and the zodiac didn’t work in our favour.” The lips of a lyricist decoded: Beto had a baby, Fred moved to LA, and times just weren’t right.

Recorded in a theatre in Macau, essentially as a live performance, Beto comments: “it’s a different recording technique; we recorded it almost live, all playing and recording together. We’ll probably go back to doing that style, because we can make the music faster and we really like the live sound and feelings you experience when playing together.”

If the two singles released so far, ‘Golden Summer’ and ‘Business Suit Morning Struggle’, are anything to go by, the record is a demonstration of the trio’s live chemistry, interspersed with hints of Spanish rhythm, ambling steel strings, and earthy, anchored dynamics.

Though according to António, “there are still a lot of surprises inside.”

“HONG KONG IS SUCH A SMALL PLACE; WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE HERE TO FORM A FANBASE FOR EVERY GENRE.” voiding an imminent downpour outside, we sit down with four of the five-piece dream pop band Thud in The Tavern on Elgin Street.

“We’re kind of shy,” lead singer and keyboardist Kim mutters, chuckling into her beer. Bassist and co-founder Wang, nimble-fingered guitarists Andy and newest addition, Sky, also sit round the table. Wang’s brother, Wai, drummer and second cofounder, is away.

There’s an air of collective modesty in the group, which is charming, and respectable considering the circumstances. Thud is essentially a paragon in Hong Kong’s alternative sphere. Unlike the vast majority of bands, who are worn down by limitations in Hong Kong’s music scene, Thud have found their way into the international eyeline.

“Hong Kong is a very small place,” Kim says. “We don’t have enough people here to form a fanbase for every musical genre.” The hazy, Slowdive-esque echoes in Thud’s first releases, ‘Lime’ and ‘Venture’, slot the band fairly safely into the world’s resurfacing shoegaze scene, though multi-coloured guitar flourishes and pop-like harmonic progressions push them more towards the ‘dream pop’ category – a term that the members of Thud seem to prefer.

But in Hong Kong, Kim believes that it’s close to impossible to build an audience in any non-mainstream genre: “The people that go to the more alternative gigs here are always the same group of people.”

But this seems pose no threat for Thud, as their raw talent continues to market itself across the Internet. Last year, in an effort often unrewarded to upcoming bands, Kim sent some emails to music blogs and major music magazines after releasing ‘Lime’. Within weeks, publications as major as British music magazine

NME returned positive feedback to the band, complimenting their proficiency as newcomers on the scene in print and online reviews.

“None of us have really had experience in marketing a band before,” Andy says. “We’re just facing things as they come.”

Flying lanterns rise into the sky as if telekinetically launched by the band’s undivided energy. Graham Coxon has rejoined the band, and they are where they belong. “It really, really really could happen,” Albarn sings to a hundred thousand adoring fans, wiping incredulous tears off his cheek. Any other band might have peaked in this moment, but not Blur.

Whether he was half submerged in a bubble bath, or the international

phonecall was faltering, drummer Dave Rowntree’s voice relaxedly bumbled down the line. We caught him in the calm before the storm; at the time of the interview, the quintessential Brit quartet had two weeks to file their plectra and sharpen their drumsticks before setting off to tour their latest album, The Magic Whip, which was released in April this year.

In May 2013, Rowntree, Graham Coxon, Albarn and Alex James found themselves stuck in Hong Kong after Japanese music festival Tokyo Rocks was cancelled. Finding themselves in

MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH (1993) Blur embraces the ‘British ideal’ in second album in order to improve financial circumstances. But the band still fails to make an impact on the US music industry.

13 (1999) Featuring tracks ‘Coffee And TV’ (on which Coxon sung lead vocals for the first time) and ‘Tender’, the sixth album represented a complete separation from the Britpop image.

PARKLIFE (1994) For which Blur won four Brit Awards. Often defined as a seminal Britpop album, the record featured two of Blur’s most lauded classics, ‘Girls and Boys’ and ‘Parklife’.

THINK TANK (2003) Coxon leaves the band. After two years of touring the seventh album, each member embarks on separate projects, and Blur is shelved until a reunion at Hyde Park in July 2009.

THE GREAT ESCAPE (1995) The band’s first number one single ‘Country House’ was released on the same day as Oasis’ track ‘Roll With It’, fuelling a famous rivalry. James describes the album as ‘theatrical’.

“HAD WE HAD A WEEK OFF IN FRANCE, WE WOULDN’T HAVE HAD AN ALBUM. WE JUST WOULD HAVE GONE HOME.” a rare situation, all four together with time to spare, they picked up their instruments. They found themselves crammed together, in Coxon’s words, “down a mugger’s alley”, at Avon recording studios in Jordan, and spent five days loosely attempting to build material for a spontaneous Blur record. Blue-eyed frontman Damon Albarn describes, “The wonderful thing about being in Hong Kong, is that there was no distraction. It was a grounding process really, because we all found ourselves getting the tube together again.”

“We knew it was going to work,” Rowntree tells us. Since Think Tank, the group had toured several times as Blur around the world, meaning their collaborative zeal was far from rusty. “It wasn’t like we were blinking and nervous and scared it wouldn’t work. It’s the blood, sweat and tears that go into Blur really, we go into the studio, we create things, and then we correct things together.”

After laying down aeons of raw jamming material, they shelved the efforts, and each member returned to his respective daily life. But Coxon, unable to get the experience out of his mind, revisited the recordings in 2014. “I’ve messed up with Blur quite a lot in the past,” he said in an interview. “I thought if I have a look at this stuff and something comes of it, it would almost be like redressing the balance of past shame.”

He filtered through and edited the recordings alongside Stephen Street (who produced the bands’s seminal albums Modern Life is

SPECIAL FEATURE: INTERVIEW WITH BLUR led to it being possible to make this album,” Rowntree says, “like the gig being cancelled, having the time off in Hong Kong together, Damon and Graham’s free schedules, and all that.” He continues: “Had we had a week off in Paris, we probably wouldn’t have an album; we just would have gone home.”

The future of Blur has been a grey area since each member embarked on their solo projects: Albarn with Gorillaz and his highly acclaimed solo album Everyday Robots last year; James’ weekly Classic FM slot and cheesemaking; Coxon’s solo musical escapades, and Rowntree’s efforts to break into the world of politics. Albarn even confessed that he tries to avoid being in the band, because it’s so much “bigger” than him. Though Rowntree believes that Blur will go on: “As long as it’s still interesting and the music’s good, we’ll carry on doing it.”

“It’s good nowadays,” he continues, “because we’re not under the same pressure as we used to be.” Before Think Tank, the band had been falling out, and during the album’s production, Coxon quit. For many, this signified the beginning of an end for Blur. “In the old days we used to churn out stuff over and over again, and in the end that turned out to be rather too much for everyone.” Rowntree continues: “We don’t want to find ourselves in that position again. It creates non-useful, stress-induced strains that can lead to bands breaking up. We’ve learned that lesson now.”

Rising to global fame in the ‘90s by way of an almost patriotic, heartthrob Brit band image, Blur’s discography has since broken free of any limitations. “We did that kind of Brit pop thing back in the ‘90s, and I don’t think people following our career closely put us in that category anymore,” Rowntree says. The recording of Think Tank was shared largely between London and Morocco, as heard in its conglomeration of African influences and Blur’s characteristic urban lyricism.

It makes sense, then, that the group would feel obliged to channel their experience in Hong Kong

All of that fed into the album.”

Aside from ‘Pyongyang’, which was written after Damon visited the North Korean capital, and lullaby ‘My Terracotta Heart’ (which is a sensitive addition to the record, documenting Albarn’s bittersweet relationship with Coxon), the vast majority of The Magic Whip refers directly to places in Hong Kong. Each supported by themes of love and longing, the tracks span from introspective ballads to classic Blur sing-alongs.

‘I Thought I Was A Spaceman’, channels the ambience of the city late at night, and ‘Lonesome Street’ is as bubbly and all-embracing as the band’s classic track ‘Parklife’. ere and there fragments of time and memories pass; abstract and perceived realities appear and disappear, leaving behind traces that hint at what could have been. Within these realms sonic representations of nostalgia merge, what the Germans call träume - or dreams - the root of which forms the English word ‘trauma’. There’s pain and suffering there too you see. But the past and all that comes with it can be reshaped, reformed, and re-imagined in the present through visual and aural expression. And with his first major release in 2012, Diversions 1994-1996, the Birmingham-born artist set out to do precisely that. It’s also where the story begins.

Four years ago Lee Gamble was looking through his old jungle and drum’n’bass cassette tapes and had an idea. He’d been DJing for some time but wanted to start making his own records, to experiment with sound and translate his emotions, fears, and memories into music. He began work on what would become his second release, Dutch Tvashar Plumes, but remained obsessed with the cassettes.

instead started to produce Diversions, as he explained before his live set at The Empty Gallery: “Making Diversions felt very cyclical in relation to time. The one thing it definitely wasn’t about was referencing just the music of that era.

It was more about a particular period in my life that meant a lot. I’ve been at a club when CS gas has been let off, and when someone’s been shot. What I’m saying is, we can look back at the past with rose-tinted spectacles but a lot of it was gloomy. Clubs felt tense but they were good for it. It meant something was happening. Gamble grew up in the centre of Birmingham, an industrial city an hour or so north of London, in a household of working class parents, “not artists, just good people”. As a teenager he was present at the birth of the jungle scene. Rave music had peaked, and by 1992 was receding from consciousness. Out of this counterculture, and others, came hardcore, and from there, jungle. It was deeper, harder, and tinged with a particular pathos and tragedy. “I think jungle music is imbued with a certain pain that comes through,” he says. “I don’t mean to sound soporific, but it comes from a certain period that was difficult and tense. You can hear it in there.

It’s the same with Detroit techno.

There’s a dichotomy of melancholy and euphoria. Jazz and dub has it in abundance too. It’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s definitely there.”

Cut to the present day, and Gamble is coming off the back of his third L.P. last year’s brilliant and borderline epic Koch. While that record contains a number of samples it’s predominantly a record of his own making. And while

Japanese Dessert Houses The popularity of Matcha desserts in Hong Kong is hardly a secret, and much to dessert-lovers’ joy, more and more Japanese dessert houses are popping up everywhere - with new ingredients as years go on. This year, we’ve noticed an influx of Japanese purple sweet potato desserts, in the form of ice cream, jelly, and even waffles. It makes sense that we found most of them in the busiest areas of the city, where passersby would want a refreshing squeeze of icy goodness after a long walk in the summer heat, but we also found a few hiding in the hipster corners of the city. These provide three different taste textures of the purple potatoes. They provide a wide range of toppings in case the sweet potato overload is too much for you, as well as Hokkaido milk ice cream. This is served with Himalayan Salt which enhances the taste. Small Potato is not very big, with less than 10 seats for customers, meaning you might have to

Founded by three Parisians, the Moldovan brothers, and designed by girl-about-town Candace Campos, NEO will in no time be the prime destination to loosen your tie after work, or warm up before a night on the town. The Mezcal’s Crack balances the sweetness of honey with an edge of bitterness from blanco tequila, complete with two irresistible shards of caramel. Once the lights go down, the bar staff use light-up ice cubes to brighten up your drink.

We suggest you try some of their small bites. Where many bars compromise the quality of their bar nibbles for their drinks, NEO pays equal attention to both. Try the tender Beef Provencal, or indulge in a light, but wonderfully cheesy, Mr Croque.

According to co-founder Brice Moldovan, NEO is the “naughty little sister” of Cocotte. And as he explains to us, the decoration is highly inspired by his impression of Hong Kong. “I lived in New York for ten years, and when you go somewhere like Times Square, the lights just seem very touristic. However, the old school neon lights of Hong Kong really bring out the history of China’s heritage, so we wanted to work with that in NEO then add a 1980s kick to it, to make it a little funkier.”

It’s rare to find a place that balances utmost style with such a friendly atmosphere. Next time you find yourself between Sheung Wan and Central, be sure to drop into NEO.

Surgeon’s 1997 album enjoyed a re-release back in 2010, but presuming that most of us, this reviewer included, may be unacquainted with the doyenne of British techno (if a label must be used) it’s worth checking back in with his sophomore studio album - least of all to see whether the record still holds up in today’s overtly self-referential cultural and musical environment. We live in undeniably post-ironic, post-Internet, meta-everything times, and only some art has the ability or wherewithal to take us beyond it all. It’s a form of catharsis, being both the past and the future all at once.

There are plenty of elements of ‘the future’ in Surgeon’s productions, as well as the heady, melodic thump of industrial techno. Wrapped within that solid framework are trace elements of some of the more experimental music forms to have come out of Britain in the 1980s and '90s – bands such as Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, and Throbbing Gristle.

Born Anthony Child in the early 1970s, Surgeon began his DJing career at the infamous House of God in Birmingham, UK. There he honed his skills, and was known for his brutal sets (he doesn’t call them dark, just ‘challenging’) and for not showing much emotion while he plays (similar to Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills). Around this time he met fellow Birmingham musician Regis (aka Karl O’Connor), and together they went on to form British Murder Boys (BMB), performing explosive live sets where unpredictability was cherished.

Basictonalvocabulary displays all of these sensibilities and more over the course of a slender 39 minutes. It’s squelchy, acid-driven techno that does its best to visualise unknown worlds and far-off planets. Standout tracks are ‘First’ and ‘9 Hours to the Future’, which have all the funk of Detroit alongside the gloominess of grey, post-war British city centres. And then there are gems like ‘Depart’. It starts to get going and then never quite does. It’s paranoid and lurking - everything a great techno track should be.

The Hamburg DJ and producer takes the helm of the much-loved DJ Kicks series for its 50th instalment, and doesn’t disappoint. Koze is known as an eclectic mixer, and here there is everything from surreal voice samples to house classics, alongside woozy numbers from the LA beat scene. For anyone who wants a meandering mix for any time of day and who is keen to find out about more obscure producers, this is well worth checking out. 在漢堡DJ和音樂製作人之間極受歡迎的DJ Kicks系列的第五十張唱片，絕對沒有

Much like jazz, hip-hop suffers from a collective obsession over the past from large swathes of fans. Slum Village came to prominence at the tail end of The Golden Age (their debut dropped in 1996), and with the late producer J Dilla behind their sound they formed part of a movement that has gone down in folklore. Showing up in the monologue of 'Giorgio by Moroder' in French electro band Daft Punk's album Random Access Memories two years ago, the Italian father of Euro disco Giorgio Moroder has resurrected as a big shot and geared up for his comeback. Mr. Giorgio has paved the way by hitting every EDM party as an "Elderly DJ”, and has finally released his latest album Déjà Vu after 30 years. Returning with the single '74 Is the New 24' last year (he’s now 75), he was assumed to have returned to synth disco. But listening through the rest of the tracks in the album, it seems dance pop has taken the lead. The album is nothing special, even with featured vocals by Kylie Minogue, Sia, Kelix, Charli XCX and Matthew Kom, among others. We just can’t resist the post-punk band Prinzhorn Dance School, aka Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn from Brighton, UK. Praised for their 80s' post-punk style, the duo has raised their own bar in latest album, Home Economics, a six-track compilation of refined post-punk nostalgia. They sound more tender and dynamic than back in the '80s - (their fashion sense also has a bit more scope than black leather and flannel) - but the lure from the simple and empty moderato tracks is the essence of the genre. The songs in Home Economics are all fantastic pieces: simple and dark, fine and smooth, flowing and touching. You can almost taste the romance in their voices in ‘Clean’, paired with exposed lyricism that refers to 'bleach'-like rain and desperate gasps for air. Out of the six tracks, ‘Let Me Go’ is a sensitive track that hides insides the E.P. like a diamond - possibly their best track yet. 我們就是不能抗拒由Tobin Prinz和Suzi Horn這對男女所組成的英國布萊頓二人

Lars Horntveth is the soul of the experimental jazz band Jaga Jazzist in Oslo, Norway, who moved to Los Angeles in 2012. It was his first time making an album for Jaga Jazzist at the studio in LA, though he eventually returned to Oslo with his team to record it. Rather than presenting his usual, northern European style, the tracks Lars made in LA were more about the richness and brightness of the Californian metropolis. From the theme song 'Starfire' to 'Big City Music' and 'Prungen', they play with the finesse and smoothness of an exemplary jazz band. Though Lars and the band did not set out to make a pure jazz album - the tracks feature sound experiments and electronic elements, which, on top of the jazz rhythms and instrumentation, strike as a combination of '70s electronic music and jazz. Some phases of penultimate track 'Oban' even reminded this reviewer of Y.M.O., the pioneer of Japanese techno-pop.

Though as with their fashion abilities, Big Bang is able to balance extreme contrasts. They mellow out for emotive RnB track 'Loser', layered with simple synths and a downcast bellowing. It’s all about theatrics and seamless spectacle with Big Bang, which is both desensitising and fun to watch and listen to.

REVIEW: MONSTER SUPERSTAR BACKFLOAT A Floating Mini Boombox

The fact that it's waterproof is a plus; the Backfloat doesn't hold back on the big sound that gives Monster its name. ptimal for beach lovers and shower singers, the Monster Superstar Backfloat is a waterproof speaker that floats and offers quite the sound. Though it comes at a slightly steep price [HK$1,299], the small and slim speaker may surprise the listener with its big sound, which is to be expected from a brand named Monster.

The Backfloat comes equipped with wireless Bluetooth technology, and can also be used manually with an AUX cord for the old-school. Along with a builtin microphone with a strong connection that can pick up your voice from quite a distance, this speaker’s wireless is equally reliable. The battery life is a little short (about 6-7 hours on a full charge), so you may want to bring some juice if you plan to spend a whole day outdoors.

Though at first we were skeptical, the speaker did perfectly fine while floating in water. The sound does not distort despite bobbing up and down, and it did not get damaged at all due to the thick silicone casing (though it is recommended to take this off to dry after use). We found the speaker sounds best in its upright position, with the sound directly facing the listener.

Perhaps the Backfloat is most suitable for the more bass-heavy genres such as hip hop and trap, as it thrives in its low to mid ends while delivering crisp vocals and sufficient treble. The small sub-woofer placed in the middle of the speaker packs quite a punch and the boom can fill a decently sized Hong Kong room effortlessly. There is slight distortion when the volume is turned up to maximum for some of the bassier tracks, but this can be prevented by adjusting the volume levels.

The Verdict: Waterproof, but not limited to outdoor use, the Backfloat no doubt delivers on sound, and its sleek, lightweight design gives it the feeling of a mini boom-box.

The price may be an issue for some and there may be better alternatives, but it would be difficult to say that the speaker does not live up to the sound. Plus it would just be cool to tell your friends you can put your speakers in the water.

All in all, we definitely recommend it.

或者Backfloat是最適合使用在重低音風格的音樂如嘻哈及Trap，因為它在低至中

部的時候表現最佳，傳遞出清脆的人聲和充分的高音。喇叭中央的小型低音箱也是很有 勁度，能夠輕而易舉地響徹整個一般大小的房間。可是重低音歌曲在聲量最大時會出現 輕微的失真情況，但只要適當調整聲量便可避免。 總結：

和輕盈的設計，就如一個迷你的揚聲器。也許它的價錢對部分人來說是個負擔，或是這 個價錢能夠擁有更好的選擇，但是它的音質是絕對能對得起這個價格。你不認為向朋友 們炫耀你有一個浮水的喇叭很酷嗎？十分值得推薦。

If You Don’t Know Now You Know HK Skaters Unite By: Pro B Lam problam

I wonder how many of you know about Go Skateboarding Day, which happens every year on the 21st June. Having started in 2004, it’s a day for all the skateboarders around the world to celebrate and to skateboard. It became an unofficial public holiday in the US in 2006. We, the Federation of Extreme Sports (X-FED) have also been gathering all the skateboarders in Hong Kong to host events for Hong Kong Go Skateboarding Day each year.

Continuing the Hong Kong tradition, this year began at Morrison Hill skate park, where all the skateboarders on the Hong Kong Island side gathered. Then there were shuttle buses to take all the boarders to Po Kong Village Road Extreme Park (PKV Park) for the rest of the event. But why PKV Park? There’s a reason and little story behind this location: Po Kong Village Road Extreme Park was built in 2011, but for several reasons, the Leisure and Cultural

Services Department (LCSD) didn’t open the park for skateboarders. On the Hong Kong Go Skateboarding day in 2012, X-FED Started a petition, getting all the skateboarders’ signatures in order to fight for the park to allow skateboarding. In 2014, the LCSD finally opened the park to skateboarders, but made it mandatory to wear a helmet.

Most skateboarders start skateboarding because it looks cool how can you act cool while you need to wear a helmet to skate? It’s like swimming with a pool float, no matter how fast you swim, you still look lame. That’s why a lot of Hong Kong skateboarders were pissed off when LCSD introduced this mandatory helmet rule. They have been using all kind of methods over social media to show they are not happy with it.

That’s why this year X-FED used Hong Kong Go Skateboarding Day as an opportunity to gather all the skateboarders together at the skate park. We wanted to fight for our rights again, like in 2012 - this time for the right to be able to choose to skate with or without a helmet. We also fought for LCSD to open two of the big bowls that have been built for several years, but have been closed for use. By the end of the event, we had collected about 200 signatures, which we will pass on to LCSD again. I am here to represent all the skateboarders in Hong Kong; to thank everyone that signed their signature. We really wish we can have a chance to choose our own safety after this petition.

今年香港滑板日一如以往由灣仔摩

利臣山道滑板公園集合，並安排旅遊巴 接載港島區嘅板仔到慈雲山蒲崗村道極

限運動場正式開始當日嘅活動。至於今 年點解會揀喺蒲崗村道極限運動場搞香 港滑板日呢？背後其實有一段小插曲…

蒲崗村道極限運動場早於11年已經

起好，但因為好多唔同嘅原因，康民署一

直未有將呢個極限運動場開放俾公眾

使用。所以喺12年嘅香港滑板日，X-FED 就發起簽名活動，呼籲所有板仔簽名爭

取開放呢個極限運動場。終於當局喺14 年，將呢個場地正式開放。不過與此同時 康民署亦將其餘四個極限運動場嘅使用 規則改為必須佩帶頭盔才可使用。

正所謂「又要威又要帶頭盔」 ，好多

人踩板係因為型，帶住頭盔踩板又點樣 型呢？就好似攬住水抱游水咁，無論游

得幾快都係咁樣衰。所以當康民署強制 執行呢條規例之後，大部份板仔都極度

不滿，多次於唔同嘅社交平台表達意見。 有見及此，X-FED就籍住今年香港滑板

日呢個機會，於一個我地爭取返黎嘅滑 板場度，再次呼籲所有板仔一齊企出黎 簽名，爭取我地應有嘅權利，選擇佩帶頭

盔與否嘅權利，同時希望當局能夠開放 兩個已經建成多時嘅碗池。活動當日一 共收到超過二百個簽名，而呢D簽名稍

後會轉交俾康民署。我喺度代表所有香 港板仔多謝每一個簽過名嘅朋友，希望 我地能夠爭取得到屬於我地嘅權利！

Britain’s hippest and most colourful kitchenware brand Joseph Joseph, founded by twin brothers Richard and Antony Joseph, has its roots in a Birmingham factory.

As teenagers, the twins spent their school holidays sweeping the floor at their father Michael’s industrial glass manufacturing business.

When their father asked them to reinvent the glass chopping board range from their family business, they jumped at the chance. Notes From The Underground K-Melo: The Wax Poet By: Sync Sing Sin

With the help of technology, ‘DJing’ has become a vague concept: To sync or not to sync, to use a computer or USB sticks, which toys to buy, etc. But what about stripping it down to the basics: two turntables, one mixer - and real vinyl? Way before the format returned as a hipster accessory, K-Melo was already throwing the vinyl-only party ‘TheGetUp!’ and is regularly seen cruising through LKF with his record bags. Recently, he’s become part of Jazzy Sport HK, the label/vinyl carrier based in Japan.

How did you get started?

I was first exposed to DJing through hip hop, and the turntablism boom around 1996. Watching my fellow crew members spin back in Australia had quite an impact on me.

Hence got my turntables and mixers around 1997, and it all started there.

Why only vinyl?

Just a personal choice. I had Serato but vinyls feel more natural to me. I aint going against technology; maybe one day when my back hurts bad enough, I”ll switch to 100% digital!

What are the essentials in your bag? Do you have a saviour track?

Probably not any specific savior track, but essentials in my record bag would definitely be some James Brown, Roy Ayers, and GQ. How did you get involved in Jazzy Sport HK? Any future plans?

Well in 2010 TheGetUp! team brought Mitsu the Beats to town, so I guess that was the beginning. But later on Tora and Taku from Oma made the connection tight, and discussions were made on a Jazzy Sport HK Team.

My favourite season has finally arrived. All I have in my mind is sunshine, beaches and putting on a sexy bikini. In order to look your very best this summer, let’s go through the essential preparation: 1) Hair removal Regardless how hot you feel in your sexy bikini, exposing hairs from your underarms or bikini line can be embarrassing. Removing body hair is simple. There are two ways to do it: with quick or permanent results. For a quick fix you can use hair removal cream like Veet, I recommend its In Shower Hair Removal Cream, which you can use quickly in the shower. For permanent results, I highly recommend this Japanese hair removal salon Musee. For a few hundred dollars you can get permanent underarm hair removal treatment with a lifelong guarantee.
