Racism and Ter ror ism, two wor ds that were to str ike fear into the hear ts and minds for many year s. Spreading like a cancer they were to be the most for thr ight two wor ds on folk?s minds. M emphis had its fair share of r acism, of that the Jenks household were well aware. This was of cour se before my ar r ival but some of the stor ies I hear d made me feel sick! Please allow me to take you back to 1950 when slaver y was almost non-existent. Folks were able to live together even though Joshua found the odd occasion when being black was to hold him back! With three brother s and two sister s the Jenks household was in ever y sense overcrowded but happy. As Joshua got older, he often wondered how his mother managed, but she had lived through a gener ation that faced up to r acism and this made her a ver y strong woman. From Joshua?s ear ly days he knew life was to be one long str uggle and although he had three brother s and two sister s, he was to be the one his folks pushed har d to gain an education, even though they could not affor d it they would buy books for him to study. We were kind of lucky as a black family since my father Johnathon and my mother M ar y had both managed to obtain employment with a local r ich white family who lived in a lar ge house on the outskir ts of the town. We only knew them as the master and his wife but that was soon to change as they insisted, we call them Sam and Julia. ?You call me Sam, Johnathon. I ?m not your master and you?re not my slave.? Sam M cL eod had Scottish connections and had inher ited a for tune from his father who owned a lar ge brewer y in Scotland. His wife Julia had given bir th to a daughter called Jilly who was almost the same age as myself. M y father was in fact a ver y sick man but was employed as Sam?s butler, gar dener and gener al help whilst my mother became a constant companion to his wife and daughter. Thanks to them we always had food on the table. M r. Sam told my father to br ing us children up to the house since his daughter was lonely and in need of other children to play with. That day was to be one I would never for get as neither my brother s nor I could tear our gaze away from Jilly. Sam said he had an announcement to make and it kind of shook us all as he said, ?M ar y we would like to offer you the j ob of housekeeper and nanny if you agree of cour se?? 12
