Hiya! from the editor

Hi there gorgeous ones! Well, 2021 started with a BANG didn't it? LOL Hopefully you are all safe, happy and well. There are SO many books releasing this year that I am looking forward to, what about you? So, now for some real talk - I have some bittersweet news, this will be my last issue as editor of BooksEtc. I have made the incredibly hard decision to step away from the magazine which I took over from my lovely friend Nicky six months ago. Wow. What a ride. I've had the opportunity to speak with and meet so many authors, creators and bookstagrammers in this time and its been SUCH an amazing time. Its also sweet becuase I am handing my baby over to an incredible team who will be lead by two phenomenal ladies who I know will bring their amazing flair to the mag. So for now, its bye from me, I hope you enjoy this issue.

Synopsis: Like all Blessed in the First Country, Kaylene is kept behind the stone walls of the Sanctuary to ensure the protection of others. Life has not been unbearable, though. She has found friends - and in Luka, even love. Then Luka dies in a terrible accident and Kaylene's entire world falls apart.Life itself seems devoid of any hope until a chance encounter with a stranger gives Kaylene a purpose that sets her and her friends on a path that challenges everything she's believed: to reach beyond death itself and bring him back. A standalone book in the Legends of the Godskissed Continent world, Deliverance of the Blessed weaves a tale of loss, longing, and encountering the unexpected,

which builds to a thrilling conclusion. I have adored A. B Endacott's writing now for a number of years. From her first novel, The Queendom of the Seven Lakes to this her latest release, I have j have fallen deeply in love with the world Alice has created, the multi-faceted countries of the Gods-kissed continent, the characters, the stories and culture, everything just sits perfectly for me. In The Deliverance of the Blessed, Endacott explores the notion of grief, this can be felt within each page, the almost physical weight that presses down on the protragonist, Kaylene (Kaya) after the death of her first and only love Luka. Life as she and her friends knows it changed drastically

by Jayse when she has a chance encounter with an old one. This one encounter sets in motion events which will shift the foundation of each character. Filled with Endacott's almost lyrical prose, this addition to the Gods-kissed continent is one not to be missed and is already my favourite read of this 2021. Make sure to add this one to your TBR, not only will you be delving into an incredible fantasy world, but you'll be supporting an amazing indie Australian author.

Synopsis:

Cursed is described as "a reimagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a young heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother's death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther."[1] In another piece on that site, Andreeva calls the show "a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the

courage to lead in the face of the impossible". (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C ursed_(2020_TV_series) This series blew my mind. I've never really liked the tale of Arthur and the knights of the round table bla bla whatever its called. BUT I did love the flim Merlin from the 90's staring Sam Neil (Jurassic Park). This was what drove me to try this new series from Netflix staring Katherine Langford (Thirteen Reasons Why). What I got was Game of Thrones meets the best fantasy movie you've ever seen. I loved the character Nimue, I loved her power and her courage to fight for what she

BOOK COMPARISON

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue VS The Sudden Appearance of Hope By Fabee

Books are such wonderful pieces of magic, that transport us to other worlds, times, fashions make us feel emotions we may not normally feel, even high-lighting thoughts and feelings that have always been there. Writers are the magical beings that create these wonderous portals. There are genres, tropes, fandoms and more that can magnetically pull our attentions to stories - and in such we can read one story and find it similar to another. I recently finished “The Invisible life of Addie Larue” By Victoria Schwab, and in the first instances couldn’t help but correlate the story to one I had already read a few years ago by Claire North - her novel, “The Sudden Appearance of Hope”. Although the premise of these stories are the same, (A female lead who once out of sight is forgotten), one book I could not put down, and the other threw me into the depths of a reading slump. It made me wonder why, and so I decided to have a look at how these stories, although so similar - left me feeling entirely on opposites sides of the spectrum. “The Invisible Life of Addie Larue” by Victoria Schwab (2020) VS. “The Sudden Appearance of Hope” by Claire North NOMADIC | 24 (2016)

With the literary world in a frenzy over “The Invisible life of Addie Larue” it isn’t hard to see why, this book has taken the book community by storm (me included).

Unfortunately, ‘Hope’ didn’t leave an impression on me. Her story and her personality left her as forgettable to me as to the people around her in the book.

The first instance of why I liked one story so much is the delivery; Addie’s story is told outside of herself and is a recollection of present and past. Hope’s delivery is first person, almost like a diary entry as there are dot points and lists. It is a linear timeline rather than the coaxing of intelligence through time such as in ‘Addie Larue’.

Both the Characters of ‘Hope’ and ‘Addie’ yearn to be remembered, but for this reader - I finished reading both these books, and only having one leave an impression.

With Addie Larue, we are also given a literal devil in the form of ‘Luc’ - who is the instigator of circumstance for Addie. He is our morally grey character that has a perverse need to want to break Addie’s spirit, this insights the character arc for both Addie and Luc and their growth of person, values, wants and needs. Hope begins a slow descent into being forgotten, until one day no-one recognises her. We are never really given a reason to why this happens, although it may be a metaphor of being the age of trying to finds one self (just as Henry is trying to find his direction and lives purpose in ‘Addie Laure’). Hope’s relationships are fleeting and with it, we never really get to dive into her personality - so for me as a reader - I couldn’t form those connections with her - whether this is intentional by the author or not, I found it only frustrating as a reader. The story of Hope offers a sense of danger only in the presence of ‘Luca Evard’, a detective who is beginning to see the patterns surrounding Hope’s endeavours, although never able to remember Hope long enough to catch her and her criminal activities she has had to turn to for survival (Yes, sounding familiar isn’t it?) “The invisible life of Addie Larue” offers so many more layers to the story than the linear telling by Claire North of ‘Hope’. The ‘Enemies to Lovers’ trope is a little bent and twisted B ybutJstill o ytangent c e Wbetween r i g h tAddie and Luc. It has all the ‘Taming Of The Shrew’ qualities as we P h o tstubbornness o g r a p h swear b yupon M aLuc r k over Halberg see Addie’s time, “as with rocks.”… It is these tropes that allows us to recognise change, and as readers to make those connections with the characters and their worlds. These changes and growth in characters allows us to have empathy and feelings for these characters, that leave IN THE SPOTLIGHT an impression long after we have closed the book.

Sequins, diamantes and hot glue guns could only mean one thing...Ryan La Sala has just released his second book!! When he's not writing he's breaking out another cosplay. His debut novel Reverie captured my imaginaton and in Be Dazzled, his follow up, he shifts gear and takes us deep inside the world of ComicCon and Cosplay Competitons...we sat down with Ryan to chat about all this and more...

Jayse - Hiya Ryan! Long time no chat! Hows it going? Whats goss? Spill some tea! Ryan - What ISN’T gross right now? I’m a pretty germaphobic person and rather suspicious of other people, so to be living through a literal pandemic is quite the manifested nightmare. Aside from that, it’s going well. I recently quit my job to focus on writing/authoring full time, which mostly means I spend a lot of time starting at my walls, playing video games, and doing the dishes right after I dirty them. It’s an oddly thorough life. Jayse – Okay, so, we are here to chat a bit about Be Dazzled; what can you tell us about this, your second book? Ryan - Be Dazzled is my second book but it’s built out of many of my first loves. It’s about two ex boyfriends pitted against one another in an arts and crafts competition, in the work of competitive cosplay at a comic book convention. It’s very fun and ridiculous, but it’s underpinned with a lot of very real emotion, which is often the case with the art we make and consume. Raffy, the main character, is a young artist determined to prove to his posh mother that his costumes/cosplays are real art, but to do so he needs to reckon with his own destructive perfectionism. And the fact that his ex boyfriend re-enters his life just as the book begins, and the further fact that perfectionism is what strained their relationship? It’s a really rich mix of drama, emotion, humor, and style. It was a joy to write this book. Jayse – After the success of Reverie, were you a little

trepidatious about the follow up? Ryan - No. Honestly, no. If I felt any trepidation, it was only because a lot of people ask me about a sequel to Reverie, which this is not. But once that’s cleared up I feel nothing but excitement delivering this book to my readers. It was an easy and fun book to write, and it’s so different from Reverie that it’s hard for me, the author, to really compare them. Reverie feels like this dreamy awakening phase of my life. Be Dazzled feels like a sunny present.

I’m compelled to create in any form. I cursed Raffy, our main character, with the same compulsion. And his ex may or may not resemble very closely my own ex boyfriend, who had to suffer the same proximity to a partner perhaps too focused on their art. - Ryan La Sala

Jayse – Arts, crafts and popculture seem to be a huuuuuuge theme throughout Be Dazzled and I know that you are a crafty minx. Did your life have any influence in the book? Ryan – Crafty minx! I love that. I love arts and crafts and I’m making stuff constantly. In fact, my books are actually an extension of this constant making of things. I’m compelled to create in any form. I cursed Raffy, our main character, with the same compulsion. And his ex may or may not resemble very closely my own ex boyfriend, who had to suffer the same proximity to a partner perhaps too focused on their art. As for pop-culture, that’s real for me, too. I’m not sure if anime counts as pop-culture, but anime and

anime-inspired media is the bedrock of my creative inspiration, and writing about teens who love anime, video games and comics feels right to me. Because that was me. As a teen, we used to sneak into cons just to be around more of ourselves. Writing back into this world has been such a balm, especially in a year when none of these cons could happen.

which is impossible, because the books are terrible. But also wonderful? Right now we’re reading Modelland, a fantasy/dystopian by Tyra Banks, and it’s a work of genius. The podcast itself is genius, too. It’s pure escapism and ridiculousness and it’s been awesome to bring levity to our listeners every week while the world basically turns into a less funny dystopia.

Jayse – ComicCons are amazing, which, in your opinion is the best one to attend? Ryan - If you’re near New York City, of course you’ll want to attend NYCC (New York Comic Con) because of the sheer scale of it, and be sure to attend the Championships of Cosplay! But Anime Boston is another fav, and there are many, many smaller and more regional cons every year. I suggest people get acquainted with the con schedule local to them, and make a point of going to the smaller cons, too. Often those are much friendlier, less overwhelming environments, and they allow you to do what I think cons do best: meet new friends who like the same weird stuff you do. Jayse – What’s next on Ryan’s big adventure? Ryan - I’m going beyond books! The pandemic gave me a lot of time to focus my creativity on things other than writing, so I’ve started a youtube channel where I do craft projects (usually while drunk) and book reports (also drunk? a theme). I’ve also started a podcast with Claribel Ortega, another author, called Celebrity Book Club, where we read celebrity-penned fiction and do our best to analyze it critically,

Quickfire Questions!!!! Pizza or Pasta? Pasta! Without a doubt pasta. Sorry to Big Pizza but I’m a pasta truther. Sailor moon or Studio Ghibli? Sailor Moon but only cuz you’re making me pick. Arts or Crafts? Crafts. I’m less about the artistic glamour of something, and more about the process of crafting it. What are you reading right now? Mexican Gothic! And it’s super duper. Next film you’ll see? I watch The Fifth Element every couple of weeks, so probably that Instagram or TikTok? TikTok. Instagram is an ugly catalog that obsesses over how to make it hard to create content. TikTok is pure, foolish creation. I love it right now. Where do you get good coffee in NYC? I am famously uncultured when it comes to coffee. I have an uncomplicated pallet. I can’t answer this without being sent to coffee jail, so I plead the fifth. Summer or Winter? Winter. Summer is lovely but I am happiest when I am working on projects, and I do that mostly in winter.
