orry to bother you but would you by any chance have a spare invitation?”

A woman asks me at the entrance to the celebrated Franco-Lebanese designer’s fashion show. She is elegantly dressed and coifed and wearing subtle makeup which at first would make you think she was herself an invited guest.

In short, she looks a lot better than myself and Giulia, the video-maker, both suffering from rushing about and the mugginess of this odd French July heatwave. “No, I’m sorry” I answer unconvinced. Is the question a joke? But it’s not, it is absolutely true: unperturbed, the woman moves on and tries again with a German journalist colleague whose eyes widen. In Paris they produce false papers to get you into the haute couture shows and invitations are literally counterfeited: people want to get in not just out of curiosity but also and, especially, for the culture that many of these shows carry with them. Hungry for news from the world of cinema, music, theatre, and also of fashion, the French queue rigorously at ticket offices or stick to the heels of some benevolent invited guest to see a couture show which will always bring with it something new and beautiful, even if it is only a pictorial reference or choice of soundtrack. It is this that has always made haute couture unique and it is this that will continue to enchant even those who have always been closely involved with this magazine, starting with Giovanna and Lisa. And now it is me, hungry for haute couture, if only for the exceptional experiences the field work has to offer young journalists. Imagine that on these pages I have already told you about my first meetings with Fausto Sarli, the visits to Fernanda and Raniero Gattinoni’s atelier, about the interviews with Pino Lancetti, to talk about Rome. And then, in Paris, about the hours of waiting backstage to exchange just two words with Galliano or Lacroix or Gaultier, or try and approach Cardin, Saint Laurent or Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel: and yet it is always worthwhile, especially today. In fact haute couture is at a crucial junction; that of preserving its power of attraction and its image and adding, at the same time, a strong sense of modernity. This is also for the question of a generational change in the age of the clientele, strange though it seems, today much younger than it once was. And the clothes by the couture houses of Paris and Rome seem destined precisely for that fortunate and very restricted number of young girls, and have a very clear mission: to invent the couture of tomorrow in the name of technology but which cannot and must not forget timeless virtuosity and poetry. Just as we hope these photos and articles will clearly demonstrate and which all of us at Book Moda Haute Couture have so carefully chosen for you.

Sketch 2 3 agosto 1959. Il giovane Valentino Garavani, all’epoca ventisettenne e all’inizio di quella che si sarebbe poi rivelata una carriera leggendaria, invia al collega Angelo Litrico una simpatica e originale dedica: il bozzetto di una delle sue inconfondibili creazioni accompagnato da una frase autografa. L’attestato di profonda stima sottolinea anche l’amicizia professionale che correva allora tra i grandi interpreti del made in Italy: proprio nel ’59 il grande couturier dell’alta moda italiana inaugurava il suo atelier a Roma, in via dei Condotti, mentre l’intraprendente sarto siciliano, nato a Catania nel 1927, aveva già da tempo aperto le porte della Sartoria Litrico, in via Sicilia, alla più internazionale clientela conquistata grazie anche alla prima e pionieristica missione commerciale della moda italiana in Russia, nel 1957. Due straordinari interpreti dell’eleganza dei tempi, uniti anche dal desiderio di sfilare sulla passerella con le proprie creazioni. E se il debutto internazionale per Valentino avviene a Firenze, nel 1962, nella Sala Bianca di Palazzo Pitti, aperta grazie all’ingegno aristocratico di Giovanni Battista Giorgini, Angelo Litrico porta per primo sotto i riflettori l’abbigliamento maschile, diventando cosi anche il primo startupper ante litteram e di par condicio: a lui si deve infatti la nascita della carriera dell’indossatore, professione fino ad allora rigorosamente riservata alle sole donne. 3rd August 1959. The young Valentino Garavani, just twentyseven years old at the time and at the start of what would turn out to be a legendary career, sent his colleague, Angelo Litrico, a very gracious and original dedication: the sketch of one of his designs accompanied by a few hand written words. This proof of his profound esteem underlines the professional friendship that existed between the great names in Italian couture at the time: it was in 1959 precisely that the great Italian couturier opened his atelier in via dei Condotti in Rome, while the entrepreneurial Sicilian tailor, born in Catania in 1927, had already for some time opened the doors of his Sartoria Litrico, in via Sicilia to the most international of clientele.

This was in part due to Italian fashion’s first and pioneering commercial mission to Russia in 1957. These two exceptional interpreters of the elegance of their day were also united in their desire to exhibit their creations on the catwalk. And whereas Valentino had his debut in Florence in 1962 in Palazzo Pitti’s Sala Bianca, opened thanks to the brainchild of the aristocratic Giovanni Battista Giorgini, Angelo Litrico was the first to put menswear on the catwalk, thus also becoming the first ever “start up” and by the same token we also owe him the birth of the career of male model, a profession that until then had been rigorously reserved to the female sex.

Un incantevole viaggio nella creatività di una delle maison couture più amate al mondo. È così che si presenterà agli occhi dei visitatori Mademoiselle Privé, la mostra allestita alla Saatchi Gallery di Londra dal 13 ottobre al 1° novembre 2015.

Esprit parigino, essenza del lusso francese e internazionale, provocazione e leggerezza: i tre piani della galleria di King’s Road, nel quartiere Chelsea, si apriranno per una full immersion nel mondo di Gabrielle Chanel, reinventato negli anni da Karl Lagerfeld, più che un direttore creativo, custode e innovatore dei codici estetici di Coco. Madeimoiselle Privé metterà in mostra una selezione di capi haute couture Chanel, una riedizione della celebrata high jewellery collection “Bijoux de Diamants”, l’unica collezione creata personalmente dalla stilista nel 1932, e uno spazio dedicato al celebratissimo profumo Chanel N°5, uno dei grandi simboli della casa di rue Cambon, a Parigi, sulla cui porta d’ingresso troneggiano come monito, anche di stile, quelle due parole: Madeimoselle Privé.

An enchanted journey through the creativity of the one of the most loved house of couture in the world. This is how Mademoiselle Privé, an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London from 13th October to 1st November, 2015 will be presented to the eyes of the visitor. Parisian esprit, the essence of French and international luxury, irreverence and lightness: the three floors of the gallery in King’s Road, Chelsea, will be open for a full immersion into the world of Gabrielle Chanel, reinvented over the years by Karl Lagerfeld, more than a creative director, a custodian and innovator of Coco’s aesthetic codes. Mademoiselle Privé will show a selection of Chanel haute couture, a re-edition of the celebrated fine jewellery collection “Bijoux de Diamants”, the only collection she designed personally, in 1932, and an area dedicated to the famous perfume Chanel N°5, one of the greatest symbols of the fashion house in rue Cambon in Paris, over the door of which dominate the two words: Mademoiselle Privé in a testimony to style.

Spesso l’eleganza è una virtù dell’anima. E la contessa Jacqueline de Ribes, alla quale il Costume Institute del Metropolitan Museum di New York - ribattezzato da Anna Wintour Costume Center - dedica la sua esposizione invernale Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style, aperta dal 19 novembre 2015 al 21 febbraio 2016, ne è la più eloquente dimostrazione. Curata da Harold Koda, l’exhibition si snoda in un percorso abbellito da 60 creazioni di alta moda e prêt-àporter, inclusi alcuni modelli creati dalla stessa contessa con il suo marchio, che restò sul mercato dal 1982 al 1995 e ricevette la compiaciuta benedizione perfino di Yves Saint Laurent, per nulla preoccupato della concorrenza che una donna così brillante poteva rappresentare per la sua leggendaria maison. Del resto, all’epoca, di miliardarie stravaganti, bellissime e amanti della moda, spesso fonte di ispirazione per i loro geniali beniamini, pullulava l’empireo dell’haute couture. Una di esse, Nan Kempner, data la sua miracolosamente sottile silhouette, riusciva a fare incetta dei prototipi realizzati per il défilé di Yves Saint Laurent subito dopo che erano usciti in pedana. Pochi anni prima del suo addio alle passerelle e qualche giorno dopo la scomparsa della sua cliente e amica, Valentino Garavani in persona pianse lacrime amare e sincere per la signora Kempner, tributandole come omaggio una superba e nostalgica collezione di haute couture a base di fiocchi e pampille di Jais. Il fatto stesso poi che una dama dell’aristocrazia francese, epitome di grazia ed eleganza racée, potesse diventare una donna in carriera impegnata su una pluralità di attività professionali, fino a ricevere dalle mani dell’allora presidente della Re-

Often elegance is all in the mind and Countess Jacqueline de Ribes is the most eloquent proof. And so the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York - christened the Costume Center by Anna Wintour - has dedicated to her its winter exhibition, Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style, open from 19th November 2015 to 21st February 2016. The exhibition, curated by Harold Koda, includes 60 haute couture and prêt-à-porter creations, some designed by the Countess herself for her own label which were available to buy between 1982 and 1995 and even received a gratifying benediction from Yves Saint Laurent, not in the least perturbed by any competition that such a splendid woman might be for his legendary fashion house. And in any case during that period the haute couture cosmos abounded with extravagant, beautiful and fashion-loving millionairesses who were often the source of inspiration for their favourite designers. One of them, Nan Kempner, given her miraculously slim silhouette, managed to acquire the dresses made for the Yves Saint Laurent show as soon as they had been seen on the catwalk. A few years before he retired from the shows and a few days after the death of his client and friend, Valentino Garavani in person cried bitter and sincere tears for Madame Kempner, paying a tribute to her with a superb and nostalgic haute couture collection based on bows and jet pendants. The fact itself that a lady belonging to the French aristocracy, the epitome of grace and racée elegance, could become a career woman operating in many professional areas and even receive from the then president of the French republic, Nicolas Sarkozy -

ATELIER VERSACE Ho voluto celebrare la leggerezza, l’idea di una femminilità eterea e forte insieme, grazie a creazioni delicate, ma allo stesso tempo di gran carattere, sorrette quasi da corsetti sagomati che segnano il busto. È una collezione couture che si lascia andare a ispirazioni stile anni Settanta mixate a citazioni di un’estetica Preraffaellita, un incontro tra la cultura hippy e le atmosfere rock. Nascono così le mini tuniche sfrangiate, le gonne a strisce di chiffon e tulle, gli abiti da gran sera percorsi da petali di tulle; il tocco rock è nel tacco, quello più dolce nelle coroncine di fiori in tessuto che raccolgono delicatamente i capelli. Strepitose figlie dei fiori sulla passerella di vetro che racchiude, e incornicia, 25mila orchidee multicolor.

I wanted to celebrate lightness, the idea of a femininity that is both ethereal and strong with designs that are delicate but at the same time with strong character, expressed by the corsets shaped to focus on the bust. It is a couture collection based on seventies inspiration mixed with Pre-Raphaelite references, a meeting of the hippie culture with a rock atmosphere. Resulting in fringed mini-tunics, skirts in bands of chiffon and tulle and evening dresses in tulle petals; the hint of rock was in the heels of the shoes, the softer touch in the crowns of textile flowers delicately holding the hair in place. Sensational flower power children on a glass catwalk that enclosed and framed 25,000 multicoloured orchids.

CHANEL Amo l’ambiente raffinato dei casinò, soprattutto di quelli di un tempo dove si respirava un’atmosfera di grande eleganza. Per questo ho voluto ambientare la nuova sfilata della couture in una sorta di circolo privato griffato Chanel con tanto di slot machine, tavoli da roulette, croupier e giocatrici che sono le mie muse e icone, donne come Julianne Moore, Rita Ora e Vanessa Paradis. Uno sguardo al passato della maison, l’altro al futuro di un capo iconico come la giacca Chanel.

Nella nuova versione 3.0, non ha cuciture, è scolpita sul corpo, grazie a una tecnica che unisce il 3D e il laser, per cui anche il bouclé diventa digitale. Futuristici volumi architettonici si alternano alle più sofisticate creazioni da sera, dal sorprendente e aristocratico touch.

I like the atmosphere of casinos, especially their great elegance of the past. That is why I wanted to set the new couture show in a kind of Chanel private club with slot machines, roulette wheels, croupiers, and the gamblers who were my muses and icons, women like Julianne Moore, Rita Ora and Vanessa Paradis. A nod too to the house’s past and one to the future of an iconic piece, the new version 3.0 of the Chanel jacket. It has no seams and was sculpted to the body using a technique uniting 3D with laser so that even the bouclé is digital. Futuristic, architectonic volumes alternate with the most sophisticated evening gowns with a surprising and aristocratic touch.

DIOR HAUTE COUTURE I wanted the idea of luxury and sensuality to be implicit in the collection but I wanted everything to be natural, apparently fluid, clean. Innocence and purity set against decadence and opulence, in the Dior garden at the Rodin Museum. I was intrigued by the idea of the forbidden fruit and what it could mean today. The starting point was Flemish painting and the idea of guilty innocence, with minimal tunics and circular skirts, asymmetric coats, fur stoles and long dresses caged in bustiers, an ideal - stratifying historical periods, from the Middle Ages to the Belle Époque. An expression of the absolute virtuosity of haute couture, of its techniques and the beauty of its artistry: a reality and an unreality that can only exist when they are brought together.

Desideravo che l’idea di lusso e di sensualità fosse implicita nella collezione, volevo però che tutto fosse naturale, apparentemente fluido, pulito. Innocenza e purezza contrapposte a decadenza e opulenza nel giardino di Dior, al musée Rodin. Ero intrigato dall’idea del frutto proibito e di quello che possa significare oggi. Il punto di partenza è stata la pittura fiamminga e l’idea di un’innocenza peccaminosa, scandita da tuniche minimali e gonne a ruota, paletot asimmetrici, stole di pelliccia e lunghi abiti ingabbiati in corsetti, in un’ideale stratificazione di epoche storiche, dal Medioevo alla Belle Époque. Un’espressione dell’assoluta maestria della couture, della sua tecnica e della bellezza del gesto artistico: realtà e irrealtà che possono esistere solo se unite.

ELIE SAAB HAUTE COUTURE I took my inspiration from my first couture, when I started in the nineties, with precious pieces that celebrate the house’s heritage like an imagined journey through my career. Gold became the leitmotif of the designs with fluid dresses, their tiny belts marking the waist, in a triumph of embroidered lace and voile encrusted in glittering gold crystals. The show ends with a bridal gown in the sumptuous style typical of that decade, inspired by the one my wife Claudine wore when we were married in 1990.

Mi sono lasciato ispirare dalla couture delle origini, quando è iniziata la mia storia negli anni Novanta, con creazioni preziose che celebrano l’heritage della maison, come in una sorta di viaggio immaginifico che ripercorre il mio percorso creativo. L’oro diventa il leitmotiv delle creazioni tra abiti fluidi segnati appena in vita da una cintura, in un trionfo di pizzo ricamato e voile incrostato di luminosi cristalli gold.

Chiude lo show l’abito da sposa ispirato a quello indossato da mia moglie Claudine per il nostro matrimonio proprio nel ’90, nel segno della ricchezza tipica di quel decennio.

FENDI Si presenta come uno straordinario ponte creativo capace di unire Parigi e Roma, alta moda e haute couture la sfilata/evento al teatro degli Champs-Élysées, dove va in scena la prima collezione di “Haute Fourrure”, alta pellicceria, disegnata per festeggiare i miei 50 anni alla direzione artistica di Fendi. Ci sono capi realizzati con lavorazioni speciali ed esclusive capaci di trasformare le pellicce in tessuto, sul filo di gusto, stile, ricerca e innovazione orgogliosamente italiana. E pensare che quando ho iniziato, la pellicceria era una cosa totalmente differente: con Fendi, abbiamo voluto rompere le regole e fare una cosa tutta nuova, come dimostrano oggi le trentasei creazioni che hanno richiesto tra le 200 e le 600 ore di lavorazione portate in passerella, una sorta di creature piumate e sognanti.

The first collection of “Haute Fourrure”, designed to celebrate my 50 years as artistic director of Fendi, a show/event at the ChampsÉlysées theatre, was presented as a kind of bridge linking the creativity of the haute couture of Paris and Rome. There are furs made using specialised and exclusive methods that can transform furs into textiles, all proudly Italian in taste, style, research and innovation. And to think that when I started the furrier’s methods were totally different: with Fendi we broke the rules and made something completely new, that can be seen today in these thirty six creations which required between 200 and 600 hours to prepare for the catwalk, a kind of dreamy, feathered creature.

GEORGES CHAKRA My new haute couture collection is based on richly embroidered ball gowns with hand painted decorations. I worked hard on the proportions and volumes to give an idea of extreme lightness through precise cutting to show the waist and define the silhouette and voluminous skirts which blossom into soft clouds, like ballerinas’ tutus. And for evening, where sensuality comes into play, dresses with asymmetric cuts and splits that dance to the rhythm of fringing and paillettes.

La mia nuova alta moda è nel segno di abiti da ballo riccamente ricamati e segnati da decori dipinti a mano. Ho lavorato molto sulle proporzioni e i volumi per dare un’idea di estrema leggerezza, grazie a tagli precisi che segnano la vita e definiscono la silhouette e gonne orgogliose nei volumi che finiscono per sbocciare in una nuvola soffice simile ai tutù delle ballerine. È di sera, poi, che entra in gioco la sensualità di creazioni percorse da tagli e spacchi asimmetrici che danzano al ritmo di frange e paillette.

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI Ho voluto una donna extra ordinaria, ovvero fuori dall’ordinario, per eleganza, cultura, eccentricità. Un insieme di doti che rendono indimenticabili personaggi come Peggy Guggenheim o Talitha Getty, entrambe muse della mia nuova collezione, in un dialogo surreale e di estremo fascino. Nascono così cinquanta creazioni a partire dai piccoli tutù agli evening gown di tulle esplosivo in arancio fluo. E ancora lunghi abiti gonfi e pigiama palazzo in pizzo verde smeraldo, fino al gran finale scandito da creazioni che sembrano cupole di chiffon e voile, nel segno di un’eleganza eccentrica e irriverente.

I wanted an extra ordinary woman, meaning truly out of the ordinary in elegance, culture and eccentricity. A combination of features that make people like Peggy Guggenheim and Talitha Getty unforgettable, who, in a surreal and fascinating dialogue, were both muses for my new collection. GIORGIO ARMANI PRIVÉ Sono partito da un vibrante rosa shocking, colore che segna tutta la collezione, appoggiandosi al lapislazzuli, al nero e all’ametista. Ho voluto meno tailleur e più abiti da sera, perché l’haute couture è sogno e mi piaceva l’idea di una donna coraggiosa che raccontasse un’alta moda più giovane e anticonformista. Una figura femminile esile, un po’ come un disegno che prende vita dal tableaux, silhouette lasciate libere nei contorni, sognanti, quasi un tratto di matita, una maquette. Anche a livello di tessuti abbiamo sperimentato effetti inediti e particolari ottenuti con ore e ore di lavorazioni maniacali, certosine, per creazioni che si arricchiscono di nappine di seta, piume di tessuto, frange di cristallo, decoro inatteso e molto snob, montato in fondo ai pantaloni. E su tutto quel rosa shocking per i vestiti da gran sera, le pellicce di tessuto e le piccole cappe di piume preziose che lasciano sfumati i contorni. Come in uno sogno o in una tela.

I started with a vibrant shocking pink, a colour that is the theme of the collection, together with lapis lazuli, black and amethyst.

I decided to do fewer suits and more evening gowns, because haute couture is about dream and I liked the idea of a courageous woman offering a younger, unconventional haute couture. A slender, feminine woman, almost like a pencil stroke, a sketch. Also as far as fabrics are concerned we experimented with unusual effects and details, obtained by hours and hours of maniacal work and delicate manoeuvres, for pieces decorated in silk tassels, textile feathers and crystal fringes, an unusual and very snobbish decoration attached to the hems of the trousers. And, above all, shocking pink for the ball gowns, the textile furs and the fine little feather capes that blurred the silhouettes. Like in a dream, or a painting.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER Nella nuova collezione ho immaginato una sorta di “ciurma bretone” tra mozzi e sirene, capitani e pescatori. Con Querelle de Brest, i porti della Bretagna che incontrano l’haute couture francese tra viaggiatori, marinai e donne, anche del jet set, tenuti insieme da dettagli stilistici come le rigature marinière o i cartigli ricamati in oro, souvenir etnici del Nord Africa. E, poi, nell’aria il suono inconfondibile delle cornamuse che riportano alla mente le atmosfere celtiche della mia Bretagna, così come l’ho voluta immaginare tra navigatori e sirene.

For the new collection I imagined a kind of Breton boat crew, with cabin boys and sirens, captains and fishermen. In Querelle de Brest, the ports of Brittany meet French haute couture with travellers, sailors, women and the jet set too, united by stylistic details such as sailor stripes or cartouches embroidered in gold, ethnic souvenirs of North Africa. And then the unmistakable sound of bagpipes in the air, bringing to mind the Celtic atmosphere of my Brittany as I wished to represent it with my sailors and sirens.

RALPH & RUSSO La collezione è pervasa da un certo gusto anni Cinquanta, evocato dalle silhouette di abiti con gonna a corolla, spesso in bianco immacolato e resi super preziosi da lavorazioni e ricami luminosi. I volumi sono amplificati da balze, le ruches incorniciano le spalle e danno movimento alla figura, giocando poi con il preziosismo di inserti di strass. Preziosi e luminosi i tessuti, in seta e lamÊ, si accendono di rosso vermiglio nel gran finale.

The collection is pervaded with a certain fifties flavour evoked by the silhouettes of full skirted dresses, often in brilliant white and made super precious by details and glittering embroidery. SCHIAPARELLI Ho immaginato per la mia prima collezione in casa Schiaparelli, trentasei creazioni, ognuna contraddistinta dal nome di un’opera d’arte e mandate in scena in uno show intitolato il “Teatro di Elsa”, nel grande salone dell’ l’hôtel d’Evreux in place Vendôme. Ed è il surrealismo, ma anche l’eleganza mai dimenticata e sapientemente rieditata per i moderni tempi della couture, tra velluti neri, colpi di oro e tocchi di inconfondibile rosa shocking, su abiti dalla silhouette slanciata, lunga e verticale. E anche colta, proprio come era Elsa Schiaparelli, la couturier romana, parigina d’adozione e vera rivale di Coco Chanel negli anni ’30 con il suo atelier/salotto, aperto agli intellettuali del tempo.

I realised thirty-six creations for my first collection for Schiaparelli, each one bearing the name of a work of art and shown on the catwalk in a show called “Elsa’s Theatre” in the great hall of the hôtel d’Evreux in place Vendôme. And it was the surrealism, and also the unforgettable elegance cleverly revisited for a modern day couture in black velvet with hints of gold and unmistakable touches of shocking pink in dresses with long, vertical, slender silhouettes. And cultured too, just like the Roman couturier Elsa Schiaparelli herself, Parisian by adoption and true rival to Coco Chanel in the 30s, with her atelier/drawing room open to the intellectuals of the day.

STÉPHANE ROLLAND Com’è nel mio dna ho mixato il tocco sofisticato tipicamente francese con un accento glamour dal sapore mediorientale mutuato da Dubai. Le silhouette di caftani e abaya mi hanno dato l’ispirazione per abiti da gran sera e creazioni, molte delle quali hanno il focus sulle spalle, quasi scolpite. Ho impresso la mia firma utilizzando la tecnica del trompe-l’oeil e lavorando la pelle dorata con il tulle per un effetto patchwork.

Just like my own dna I mixed a touch of typical French sophistication with an accent on glamour with a Dubai inspired Middle Eastern flavour. The silhouettes of caftans and abayas gave me inspiration for the evening gowns and other designs, many of which are focused on almost sculpted shoulders. I printed my signature using a trompel’oeil technique and using gold coloured leather with tulle for a patchwork effect.

TONY WARD Nella nuova collezione ho voluto celebrare la natura e la sua forza espressa nella bellezza dei minerali, formazioni millenarie di cui ho voluto indagare il lato più poetico. I minerali sono sempre presenti nelle decorazioni, per i tagli tubolari e a prisma, così come nei colori che ho utilizzato: tonalità iridescenti, dall’ambra al topazio, all’acquamarina, allo zaffiro. Seguendo questo mood ho arricchito gli abiti con decori che citano frammenti di roccia, tra scintillanti illusioni e riflessi che mimano la colata lavica.

I wanted to celebrate the power of nature in the new collection, expressed in the millennia old beauty of minerals, of which I wanted to express the more poetic side. So minerals nearly always made an appearance in the decorations, in the tubular and prismatic cuts, and in the colours I chose: iridescent shades, from amber to topaz, aquamarine and sapphire. Following the same mood, I embellished the dresses with decorations referencing fragments of rock, glittering illusions and reflections mimicking molten lava flows.

VIKTOR & ROLF Nel colonnato del Palais de Tokyo abbiamo voluto ricreare l’ambiente della galleria di un museo che mano a mano si anima, con il procedere dello show, fino a vestirsi delle nostre creazioni couture, alla stregua di opere d’arte, o meglio, di quadri da indossare. Le modelle avanzano sulla scena indossando tele incorniciate, segnate da citazioni di arte classica o barocca; poi, vengono spogliate di cappe, gonne e coat, subito dopo appesi alle pareti, prendendo le sembianze di veri e propri tableaux di tessuto.

We wanted to recreate, under the colonnades of the Palais de Tokyo, the atmosphere of the gallery of a museum that slowly comes to life as the show proceeds, until it is displaying our couture creations like works of art, or rather paintings to wear. The models appeared wearing framed canvasses bearing references to classic or baroque paintings; then they have their capes, skirts and coats removed, which are immediately hung on the walls, taking on the shape of real art works but in fabric.

A great comeback that felt a little like a debut, as emotional and surprising as a new birth and as the title “Mirabilia Romae” of Valentino’s unforgettable show/event in the Eternal City promised.

A tribute but also a tour round the great beauty and history of the capital where the fashion house was first opened in 1959 and where the two artistic directors, the design heirs of Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli continue to live, work and be continually artistically nourished today. 700 guests from all over the world were present for a catwalk show of madonnas and pagan gods, almost a kind of archeological walk devised by the artist Pietro Ruffo and set in piazza Mignanelli, the home of not only the Valentino academy and its great sartorial past but also of the new boutique, the biggest in the world designed by the creative duo together with the British architect, David Chipperfield.

Monumental and majestic, Rome thus lived again in the architecture of the couture clothes inspired by the Pantheon’s dome, the Colosseum and piazza del Campidoglio designed in the Renaissance by Michelangelo. And by other historic sites round the city of the “Mostra Diffusa”, 10 steps marking an unusual route round the most secret heart of the city, those places that can influence vision, a sense of history and the most intimate and precious beauty.

Chapter IV Faticosamente oscillando tra i marosi, alla stentata ricerca dell’onda perfetta che la potesse far volare alta sulla cresta (o colare a picco, definitivamente), la barca di AltaRoma è arrivata in porto. Nuova ciurma e stesso comandante (cda rinnovato e Silvia Venturini Fendi, presidente confermato, ndr) per la solita destinazione, Roma Capitale, dove poter attraccare con un carico di giovani leve pronte a esibirsi sotto lo sguardo perplesso, o rassegnato, dei vecchi marinai. Rottamare il passato senza traghettare nulla della sua esperienza verso il futuro? Non si può fare e non è giusto in nessun campo, soprattutto in quello dell’alta moda, come ci insegna Parigi (vedi pagine sopra). Il futuro, perché sia tale, deve avere radici antiche, sennò la pianta muore, o peggio diventa una pianticella, che a Roma, monumentale e Caput Mundi, non va proprio bene. Noi tutti tifiamo, perché nella Città Eterna torni una grande stagione di haute couture che possa trovare nuova linfa nei più giovani couturier e dare lustro alle storiche e tradizionali case di alta moda che qui continuano a lavorare per la loro affezionata e più internazionale clientela .Perché questo avvenga serve il contributo di tutto e di tutti, ma soprattutto serve un atteggiamento mentale, importante tanto quanto il sostegno economico: unire le forze, senza divisioni che potrebbero rivelarsi mortali, coltivando gli allievi senza dimenticare i maestri. E, per finire, ricordando che l’alta moda è ricerca, visione, arte e architettura, anche dei luoghi, come dimostrano le creazioni della maison Valentino presentate nello speciale evento “Mirabilia Romae” che ha riunito la moda al territorio, il turismo agli atelier.

Un buon suggerimento da non sottovalutare.

Battling through the swell in its attempt to find the perfect wave and race along its crest (or plummet into the abyss forever), the ship that is AltaRoma has come into port. A new crew and the same captain (CDA renewed and Silvia Venturini Fendi confirmed as president,ed) and the same destination, Rome, where it can dock with its load of new young recruits ready to put their talent on display under the perplexed or resigned gaze of the old mariners. Scrap the past without ferrying anything of that experience into the future? That cannot be done and it is not right to do so in any field, especially in that of haute couture, as Paris has taught us (see preceding pages). For the future to be just that it must have well-established roots otherwise the plant will die, or worse, remain small and insignificant, which is no good at all for the monumental Caput Mundi that is Rome. We are all rooting for the Eternal City to have a great haute couture come back, one that will find a new life force in the new, young couturiers and give lustre to the traditional and classic fashion names in haute couture who continue to make clothes for their loyal, international clientele. Everything and everybody needs to contribute so that this can happen, but, above all, mental attitude is as important as financial support: to unite its strengths, with no divisions which could be fatal, to cultivate new recruits without forgetting the masters. And, finally, to remember that haute couture means research, vision, art and architecture, real architecture. As shown by the Valentino collection presented at a special event, “Mirabilia Romae”, which linked fashion to the city, tourism to the ateliers. A sensible suggestion that should not be undervalued.

Proprio come le mie muse, divine della Dolce Vita italiana dallo stile unico e inconfondibile. E proprio, come Alona, amica amata e superlativa top model.

I chose to show the new collection, “Memories of Aristocratic Beauty” at the Villa Torlonia. I was inspired by the divine stars of Italian cinema, the women from Silvana Mangano and Elsa Martinelli, dressed in hand-crafted couture. Mini dresses decorated in fine inlays and the lightest, fairy tale transparencies. Just like my muses, the fabulous women of the Italian Dolce Vita, in a unique and unmistakble style. Like Alona, a much loved and amazing top model.

RANI ZAKHEM Ho scelto di dedicare la mia collezione ai grandi costumisti del cinema americano d’epoca, professionisti come Gilbert Adrian, Jean Louis e Orry Kelly, e non a caso in apertura di sfilata c’è proprio un abito omaggio a Marlene Dietrich. Ho voluto così reinterpretare in chiave contemporanea l’allure della moda primi Novecento, sospesa tra il desiderio di glamour nonostante il grigiore delle guerre mondiali.

I decided to dedicate my collection to the great American film costume designers of the past, professionals like Gilbert Adrian, Jean Louis and Orry Kelly, and, for very good reason, the show opened with a dress in tribute to Marlene Dietrich. I wanted to revisit the allure of early 20th century fashion in a contemporary key, a time suspended between the desire for glamour despite the greyness of the world wars.

Lui, di professione fotografo, era un giovane conte, rampollo di una delle più antiche famiglie siciliane. Lei, super top model newyorkese, è ricordata ancora oggi come una delle più celebri mannequin del suo tempo. Correvano gli anni ’50 quando il conte Giovanni Luigi Moncada di Paternò incontrò per la prima volta - e immortalò su pellicola - la giovane Joan Whelan, statuaria bellezza dalla silhouette aristocratica, già avvezza al patinato mondo della moda. Arrivata nella Città Eterna direttamente dalla Ville Lumière, dove un altro conte - Hubert de Givenchy - l’aveva innalzata a emblema di eleganza, Joan divenne ben presto non solo una delle protagoniste di spicco della Dolce Vita, ma la compagna di vita, la moglie e un’eterna fonte d’ispirazione per quel fotografo in erba, da lì a breve uno dei più celebri professionisti tricolori del secolo scorso, fondatore del primo studio fotografico della capitale. È una storia d’amore, quella tra Joan e Moncada, a dare il via a un suggestivo viaggio lungo due decadi, un excursus in bianco e nero che attraverso immagini, ritagli di giornali, testimonianze d’epoca e guardaroba da sogno ci accompagna, in punta di piedi, tra leggendari atelier, come quelli parigini di Chanel, Jean Patou e Lanvin. Un itinerario che ripercorre incontri e sodalizi professionali, amicizie, ma soprattutto indimenticabili creazioni, come gli abiti - che Joan indossò fuori e dentro ai set - firmati Christian Dior, Balenciaga e Nina Ricci. He was a photographer, a Count and a descendant of one of the oldest aristocratic families of Sicily. She was a top model from New York and is still remembered today as one of the best known models of her day. It was during the 50s when Count Giovanni Luigi Moncada di Paternò met for the first time and immortalised the young statuesque, aristocratic looking beauty, American model Joan Whelan. Arriving in Rome via Paris where another Count, Hubert de Givenchy, had raised her to the heights of a symbol of elegance, Joan soon became not only a prominent protagonist of the Dolce Vita but also the lifelong partner, wife and eternal source of inspiration to the then aspiring young photographer who was soon to become the most celebrated Italian photographer of the last century and founder of the first photographic studio in the capital. A true love story theirs that would be the start of a colourful journey lasting two decades; an excursus in black and white, through pictures, newspaper cuttings, accounts of the day and the dreamiest clothes that lead us on tip toes through legendary ateliers such as the French ones of Chanel, Jean Patou and Lanvin. L’abito ha sempre rappresentato fin dagli antichi Egizi il fulcro dell’evoluzione della moda nella sua dimensione diacronica e nelle sue propaggini più estreme nel costume e nei cambiamenti sociali, come conferma il caso della rivoluzionaria mini gonna di Mary Quant e prima ancora dello chemisier in jersey di Coco Chanel e Jean Patou di estrazione sportiva. Oggi l’autrice Marnie Fogg, docente di storia della moda con un’esperienza professionale di stilista, nel suo patinato volume The Dress: 100 idee che hanno cambiato la moda per sempre, pubblicato dalla casa editrice britannica Carlton Books (www.carltonbooks.co.uk), analizza cento possibili varianti dell’abito letto come epitome della femminilità nelle sue molteplici espressioni, da quella più aggressiva dell’abito corazza a quella più folk dell’abito ispirato al costume tipico delle contadine russe, passando per la stravaganza dell’abito entravé di Paul Poiret, fino alle donne fatali e ai loro languori esotici.

Maison Margiela Sulla passerella di Maison Margiela, John Galliano non frena la sua eccentrica creatività neanche sul fronte degli accessori. Riduttivo infatti definire quei tacchi semplicemente “scultura”. Iperbolici, in plexiglass trasparente, a forma di mezza luna o sinuosi dalle linee barocche o ancora doppi e squadrati, tutti assemblati alle calzature con un complesso gioco di lacci, intrecci e cinturini. Da abbinare a calzini bicolor o da sfoggiare senza calze. Per ribadire il concetto, anche gioielli in sapone, radici e grano.

There was no holding back John Galliano’s creativity on the Maison Margiela catwalk even where the accessories were concerned. It would be an understatement to describe those heels as just “sculpture”. Hyperbolic, in transparent plexi-glass, in the shape of a half moon or in a curvaceous baroque shape, or even chiselled, and then tied to the shoe in a complex network of knots and straps. The journey taken by this jeweller for the new collection was a dream-like voyage over the “Seven Seas”, cradling a marine atmosphere translated into the language of precious stones. From the Adriatic to the Mediterranean, from the Caspian to the Arabian seas and as far as the Atlantic and Indian oceans in a symphony in blue and the reflections evocative of the Red and Black seas.

Maison Margiela Labile il confine tra make up e body painting sulla passerella di Maison Margiela, per la seconda collezione “Artisanal” messa a segno da John Galliano. Pennellate, volutamente intense quanto imprecise, enfatizzano i lineamenti del volto, colorando occhi, labbra, guance e viso di un intenso blu Klein. Alla stregua di contemporanee opere d’arte, ogni uscita accende i riflettori su un differente beauty look. A realizzarli è la make up artist, tra le più influenti al mondo, la britannica Pat McGrath, affiancata da un team di professionisti di back stage dell’haute couture.

There was barely a dividing line between make up and body painting to be seen on the Maison Margiela catwalk for the second “Artisanal” collection designed by John Galliano. Deliberately strong, imprecise brush strokes highlighted the contours of the face, gave colour to the eyes, lips and cheeks in a deep Klein blue. Just like contemporary works of art, each model appeared on the catwalk with a unique make up. This was the work of one of the most influential make up artists in the world, the Briton Pat McGrath, together with a haute couture team of back stage assistants including the hair stylist Eugene Souleiman and nail artist, Maria Newman.
