anzania’s national parks and game reserves cover one-seventh of the country. Landscape of rolling, green savannah, wildlife, ancient humans, the Maasai tribe, and modern tourists have all made their mark in the Serengeti National Park which is located in northern Tanzania.

The Serengeti National Park is one of the best places for spotting lions, cheetahs and leopards Tanzania has over 60, 000 insect species, about 25 types of reptiles or amphibians, 100 species of snakes and numerous fish species.

LION Lion is a magnificent animal, belonging to the cat family, which has been associated with power, strength, courage and royalty, since ages. The roar of a male lion can be heard from a distance of, as much as, five miles. Lions do not eat an entire kill in most of the cases. Other predators, like hyenas and vultures, have been known to finish the kill of a lion. The eyesight of a lion is five times better than that of a human. It can even hear a prey from a distance of one mile. After eating, a thirsty lion may drink for as long as 20 minutes. Lions mark their territories either through scent deposits or by scratching marks on the trees.

ELEPHANT The word ‘elephant’ comes from the Greek word eléfas, meaning ‘ivory’. Elephant is the largest of all land mammals. A newborn elephant can stand up shortly after being born; Baby elephants are blind at birth and rely upon their trunks and their mothers to help them. The average life span for an elephant in the wild is from 50 to 70 years. They oldest known elephant in the world lived to be 82 years of age. Elephants spend about 16 hours a day eating, they consume as much as 495 pounds of food per day.

GIRAFFES Giraffes are the tallest of all living land animals. Giraffes are well-known for tall profile, their long neck, and distinct patchwork pattern and are therefore among the most

recognizable creatures in the animal kingdom. Their heart is 2 feet long and weighs about 25 pounds .A Giraffe’s heart is 2 feet long and weighs about 25 pounds. The heart pumps about 16 gallons of blood/minute. The average life span of a giraffe in the wild is between 20 to 25 years. Giraffes have 7 vertebrae in their necks which gives them the flexibility of a wide range of movement with it.

CROCODILES Crocodiles are very fast over short distances, even out of water. They have extremely powerful jaws and razor-sharp teeth for tearing flesh, but cannot open their mouth if it is held closed. As cold-blooded predators, they can survive long periods without food, and rarely need to actively go hunting. Despite their slow appearance, crocodiles are top-level predators in their chosen environment. Many times crocodiles stay on the river banks mouth wide open. That is not an aggressive posture, but a way to cool off: they sweat through the mouth! The teeth of a crocodile get replaced continuously, throughout its life.

GORILLA The first thing that strikes one about gorillas is their massive size. The short trunk, broad chest and shoulders may make them seem frightening to some, but in reality, they can be shy in their behavior as well. Of course, as is the case with most animals, these don’t usually cause any trouble unless provoked. Gorillas are vegetarian; they eat fruits, leaves, shoots. The famous chest beating ritual is used for intimidating outsiders, communicating between the groups and maintaining the hierarchy within the group.
