The Animal People Choose a Leader Richard

Wagamese illustrated by

Richard Van Camp

The unmistakable voice of revered author Richard Wagamese returns with this moving tale, illustrated with original work from Anishinaabe artist Bridget George.

Gracefully conveying the limits of physical force and the quiet energies of humility, empathy and a loving attachment to the land, The Animal People Choose a Leader has a distinct lyrical power, spellbinding illustrations and a poignant message. Here is yet another example of the late author’s unique gifts as a storyteller, and a welcome reminder of his honoured place in Canadian writing. ages 6–9 | $24.95

A teen novel that blends sharply observed realism with hair-raising horror. For as long as Lawson can remember, his life has revolved around “the Treaty” between the Dogrib and the Chipewyan, set down centuries ago to prevent the return of bloody warfare between the two peoples. But one of the Crane brothers has placed himself in the service of a cruel, ghoulish spirit bent on destroying the peace. Now it’s up to Lawson and his friends—Isaiah Valentine, a Cree Grass Dancer and Shari Burns, a Metis psychic—to face what Silver Cranes has called back. ages 12–18 | $24.95

“Reading Richard Van Camp is like coming home. It’s like pushing your chair back from the family dinner table with a full belly, sore face from laughing and eager ears still hungry for more stories. No one does horror, and no one does a funny, awkward, gangly teen hero like Richard Van Camp... I love this book!”

—katherena vermette author of A Girl Called Echo Beast

The Lesser Blessed Richard Van Camp

Internationally praised and the subject of a critically acclaimed film, this YA novel about coming of age in Canada’s North has achieved the status of an Indigenous classic. ages 12–18 | $24.95

Some creatures use poop as a weapon. Others use it to communicate. Some animals’ frass, or dung, or waste helps the planet. There are creatures that barely go at all: the three-toed sloth makes its way slowly to the ground only once a week to poop. This humorous and informative book shows readers the role poop plays in the natural world.
