This is where the hallway horror hides.

The horror is not black, nor is it grey.

It’s just dark.

It is neither hairy nor hairless.

It is like a blurred photograph, a tangled knot of yarn, a beast in the night.

Every evening after dinner Daddy says, “Go and put your pyjamas on” and Mummy says, “Go and brush your teeth.”

And I have to go all the way down the hallway.

I turn on as many lights as I can, and I count one, two, three.

I stand perfectly still and then I make a run for it!

Or sometimes I make up a really complicated dance.

Or I sing really loud so I can’t hear the hallway horror puffing.
