Bonnier Books UK Adult Trade Catalogue January – June 2022

Dear fellow book lover, It’s a pleasure to introduce our catalogue for the first six months of 2022. Many of the books you will find here were born in lockdown but will, we hope, be published in happier times. We are delighted to be able to work again across the full spectrum of the publishing business and look forward to reconnecting our authors with journalists, bloggers and booksellers in person. As ever, we have an eclectic mix of titles on offer across the adult trade fiction lists. Bestselling brands Wilbur Smith, Lynda La Plante, Rosie Goodwin and T.M. Logan continue to write at the height of their powers, and we are delighted to welcome internationally acclaimed authors Stuart Neville, Chris Ryan, John Hart and Lars Kepler to a crime and thriller list that includes annual favourites Rory Clements, Harry Sidebottom and S. J. Bennett, whose ‘Her Majesty The Queen Investigates’ series goes from strength to strength. This year sees Manilla Press come of age as we celebrate paperback publication of three of last year’s hardback bestsellers: Stacey Halls’ Mrs England, Christy Lefteri’s Songbirds, and Louise Nealon’s critically acclaimed debut Snowflake. Manilla Press will also publish prizewinning author Liz Hyder’s long-awaited adult debut The Gifts, and in May, Young Women, the powerful second novel by Jessica Moor, tipped by the Observer as one of 2020’s top debut novelists.

Our non-fiction team has been busy, too. The relaunch of our Lagom health and well-being list is marked by two major publications: Professor Rose Anne Kenny’s ground-breaking book on how and why we age, Age Proof, and Sunday Times no.1 bestseller Kate Silverton’s essential guide There’s No Such Thing as Naughty: The Primary School Years. On our general non-fiction lists we are proud to be publishing rugby superstar Steve Thompson’s unflinching and moving memoir Unforgettable, detailing his battle with brain injury, Threads, an autobiography from the inimitable Esme Young, star of The Great British Sewing Bee, and Minnie Driver’s candid and very funny memoir, Managing Expectations. With specialist imprints Nine Eight and Heligo Books now publishing in the music and business/ smart thinking areas respectively, we truly have something for everyone. I hope you find this first six months as exciting as we do – we are looking forward to working with you. Best wishes

Always Remember Your Name The Children Who Survived Auschwitz Andra & Tatiana Bucci The haunting memoir of two sisters among the very few children who survived Auschwitz, picking up where Anne Frank’s Diary left off and giving voice to so many who were murdered On 28 March 1944, sisters Tati (six) and Andra (four) were roused from their sleep and taken to Auschwitz, to the infamous Kinder Block, presided over by Josef Mengele, the Angel of Death. By the time Auschwitz was liberated, 230,000 children had been murdered, and Andra and Tati were among 70 or so survivors aged under ten. They were sent to Lingfield House in Surrey, England. Their mother had made them promise to ‘always remember your names’, and it was this promise which led to them being miraculously reunited with their parents. An unforgettable narrative of the power of sisterhood, and of how a mother’s love can overcome the most impossible odds, the Bucci sisters’ memoir tells the remarkable story of the children of Auschwitz and explores the sisters’ long lives lived as survivors of the Holocaust. ANDRA (b. 1939) and TATIANA BUCCI (b. 1937) were born in Fiume, the daughters of a Catholic father and Jewish mother. They were deported to Auschwitz along with their mother, grandmother, aunt and a cousin. When the camp was liberated in 1945, they were sent first to Czechoslovakia and later to England, where their parents finally tracked them down. They were reunited with their parents in 1946. Today, they bear witness in schools and at the camps.

Age Proof The New Science of Living a Longer and Healthier Life Professor Rose Anne Kenny We all age. But why do some of us live longer than others? Why do we live twice as long today as our ancestors did 200 years ago? And what does the latest science teach us that will help us not only to live longer lives, but also to live fitter, healthier and happier lives in our later years? Professor Rose Anne Kenny has 35 years of experience at the top of ageing medicine and is at the forefront of scientific research into the subject. Age Proof takes Professor Kenny’s ground-breaking research and reveals why and how some people have a lower biological age (how our body looks and feels) than chronological age (the number), and the role played by food, genetics, sex, physical exercise, friendships and much more. PROFESSOR ROSE ANNE KENNY is an award-winning physician and researcher who is Head of the academic department of Medical Gerontology at Trinity College Dublin since 2006. She is the founding Principal Investigator of The Irish LongituDinal study on Ageing (TILDA). Talking with Serial Killers: Sleeping with Psychopaths A chilling study of the innocent lovers of savage murderers Christopher Berry-Dee Sunday Times-bestselling writer and criminologist Christopher Berry-Dee turns his attention to a different kind of victim: the spouses or partners of serial murderers who remained unaware of exactly who they had fallen for until after their other half’s arrest. Among the sixteen main subjects in this book: n Sonia Sutcliffe first discovered that her husband, Peter, was leading a secret existence as the Yorkshire Ripper only when he was arrested. n Kelli Kae Boyd, the wife of Kenneth Bianchi, the ‘Hillside Strangler’, only learned of her husband’s crimes when state police smashed down her door. These innocents often experience a kind of guilt for not having recognised the killer in their home, as well as having to face the grim reality of betrayal and deceit. They have to live with that, as well as intrusion from the media – and even the suspicion that ‘they must have known something’ – for the rest of their lives. A noted writer and criminologist, CHRISTOPHER BERRY-DEE’s recent books include Talking with Psychopaths and Savages: A Journey into the Evil Mind, the UK’s bestselling true-crime title of 2017, and Talking with Psychopaths and Savages: Mass Murderers and Spree Killers (2021). He is the country’s No. 1 true-crime author. Royal Trade Paperback • 9781789464283 6 Jan 22 • £14.99 • John Blake Digital Audio • 9781789465648

She has a crossbow, arquebuses and gunpowder. The island is populated only by wild beasts. She may be pregnant at this time. Chris Wild

Elle Wright

Can we fix how we look after children in care?

The second book from the Sunday Times bestselling author.

Government cuts, unregulated care homes, inadequate staff training – campaigner and care home consultant Chris Wild has seen it all. The low standards and frequent abuse of children in care has long been a focal point of his loud message: we are failing and something needs to change.

After the death of her three-day-old son Teddy in 2016, Elle Wright never expected what came next – that the path to bringing home a living child could be so winding. Elle's loss was followed by three and a half years of endless waiting.

Chris delves deep into the lives of care home kids, from experiences with county lines, drugs, trafficking, knife crime, gang violence to child exploitation and sexual abuse. He tells the stories of the children left behind, compounded by his own experiences of growing up in care. How is the care system failing our young people and controlling just who and what they can become? Is it too late to fix the state of it? Sins of the Father Abused by my father every day for ten years, this is my story of survival Shaneda Daly with Linda Watson-Brown Shaneda Daly was only 6 years old when her father started grooming her. For more than ten years, he would go on to sexually abuse her every day. Eventually, her ex-army and prison officer father admitted what he had been doing, agreeing to leave home to get help. Returning after only a year, he was welcomed back, apparently a changed man. With no choice but to accept it, Shaneda lived alongside him again only for him to try and abuse her once more. Shaneda managed to contact the police and leave home. Decades later, in 2011, she watched as her father was convicted on 227 counts of abuse – the average number that usually secures a conviction is less than 20. Shaneda now fights as a campaigner for other victims and is bravely telling her story fully for the first time: the story of a survivor. SHANEDA DALY lives in Ireland where she runs Survivors Side By Side and coordinates support group meetings nationwide, and campaigns for mandatory life sentences for those convicted of child abuse. This is her first book. Linda is a ghostwriter and author of 30 books. Trade Paperback • 9781789464665 17 February 22 • £12.99 • John Blake Ebook • 9781789464672 Digital Audio • 9781789464689

My Autobiography NOT FINAL COVER

Now, as he turns eighty-five, Blackwell takes us back to the island where it all began: Jamaica – the place where his family once partied with the likes of Noël Coward, Ian Fleming and Errol Flynn and where, as Jamaican local music began to adopt contemporary American trends, Blackwell’s burgeoning musical instincts flourished. It was also the birthplace of the now-legendary Island Records, founded by Blackwell in 1959. Five years later, while living in London selling Jamaican records to Caribbean immigrants, Blackwell came across the vocal talents of teenager Millie Small, who he paired with the song ‘My Boy Lollipop’. The producer added a ska beat and released what would be a worldwide hit. But this was just the beginning of a truly remarkable career. In this fascinating memoir, including up to fifty photos supplied by Blackwell’s team, the music icon will discuss the many artists he’s worked with over the years, as well as unpicking the initiatives, decisions and risks that ultimately brought such success to both Blackwell and his esteemed musical collaborators.

Goose Green Uncensored Voices Nigel Ely Published to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Falklands War, April–June 1982 On 28 May 1982, 450 men of the 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, fought to retake the settlement of Goose Green on East Falkand, where 1,500 Argentine soldiers were holding 119 Falkand Islanders – including children – in squalid conditions. Eve of Destruction MARCH

The Inside Story of our Dangerous Nuclear World Colonel John Hughes-Wilson No one realised the full potential of nuclear weaponry when, in 1945, US President Truman ordered the bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those attacks, along with the civil disasters at the Fukushima and Chernobyl nuclear plants, might spring to mind at the mention of nuclear destruction, but the majority of the events recorded in this book are entirely unknown to most people. Eve of Destruction records the facts – many of them still shrouded in secrecy – which show that we have courted nuclear catastrophe far more often than the general public realises. Since that first and last atomic war in 1945, there have been a terrifying number of nuclear accidents and mishaps. And, despite the catastrophic nature of any nuclear conflict, we have come to the very borders of such a situation eight times since the 1960s. Written by a former career intelligence officer, Eve of Destruction is a warning from history – an urgent call to take note of the very real danger of nuclear catastrophe. COLONEL JOHN HUGHESWILSON, who served in the Intelligence Corps and with Special Forces during a long and distinguished military career, is a noted military historian, writer and broadcaster. Threads Esme Young An incredible memoir from British fashion designer Esme Young To any self-respecting sewing fan, Esme Young needs no introduction. The diminutive judge of The Great British Sewing Bee has a sharp eye for a wonky seam, and an even sharper eye for a good necklace. Born in 1949, Esme spent her childhood mostly outside and very much unsupervised. She discovered sewing at 7-years-old, and a passion was born. As a teenager, she made her way to London and Central Saint Martins, where her life truly began. Living in a squat with other young creatives, Esme made the most of the creative heyday of the ’70s and ’80s: watching Notting Hill Carnival with David Bowie, starting a clothing line called Swanky Modes with three friends and 50 quid each. The ’90s saw another career move, this one into costumes for films such as Bridget Jones’s Diary and The Beach, before she moved onto the small screen herself. A celebration of a creative life lived differently, Threads is a reminder that it’s never too early, too late or too soon to pick up a needle and start stitching in a new direction . . . ESME YOUNG is currently one of the judges for The Great British Sewing Bee. She also tutors at Central Saint Martins. SOAR My Journey from Council Estate to the House of Lords

Simon Woolley From Council Estate to House of Lords, the compelling story of Lord Simon Woolley, the man who revolutionised British politics

NOT FINAL COVER

Simon Woolley grew up as the adopted Black child of white parents in St Matthews, Leicester, one of the poorest communities in the country. His mother Phyllis gave him unconditional love, but he grew up surrounded by racism. As a nine-year-old, he watched a group of skinheads savagely beat up an elderly Asian man, and in school he learned how to fight. Leaving school without his A levels, he was first a ticket tout, then a mechanic before finding his way back to education as an adult. Overseas travel provided his political awakening, and Simon soon joined Charter 88, campaigning for electoral reform and setting up Operation Black Vote in 1996, helping to drive a dramatic increase in the number of Black MPs and becoming a cross-party voice in the face of increasingly partisan politics. He was knighted for his work for social and racial justice, and in the same year he was appointed to the House of Lords by Theresa May as a crossbench peer. Lord Simon Woolley’s story is extraordinary – from a foster boy he is now a peer of the realm, advising prime ministers and our future king, along with shaping public and business policy. Born in Leicester in 1961, SIR SIMON WOOLLEY founded Operation Black Vote in 1996, and was elevated to the House of Lords in 2018. As the principal of Homerton College, Cambridge, he is the first Black man to head an Oxbridge college. The title given by the teacher was: “When I grow up, I want to be . . .” and I wrote about how when I grew up, I wanted to be a farmer’s daughter. ‘My dad worked in insurance. ‘Now, though, I realise how apt that ambition was. It set up a template in my life of wanting something impossible to become true. How in trying to make something impossible happen, and failing repeatedly, other things happened. Things that became my life. A life I love, because it was made with so many holes that I enjoy filling in.’ Managing Expectations is a memoir-ish, a tell-most, by Minnie Driver: A-list actor, mum, singer and songwriter, exploring her life most extraordinary. With searing honesty and bags of laughs, Minnie Driver tells us how things not working out so often worked out remarkably well, and how reaching for the dream is easily more interesting, expansive, sad and funny, than the dream itself coming true. MINNIE DRIVER is an actor, singer, and storyteller. She and her son Henry divide their time between LA and London. ‘Plans, what plans? These I had, were conceived in childhood and meant to be executed in adulthood. And here I was. Intact and ready, the rough crayon drawing of life needed to become animated. I wanted to end up living in the square house with the curling smoke coming from the chimney, and on occasion to step into the princess dresses and sparkly heels. I was still the limitless drawing imagined by 6-year-old me, I did not want to be anything different, but I needed her to evolve.’

The Nine How a Band of Daring Resistance Women Escaped from Nazi Germany – The Powerful True Story Gwen Strauss The thrilling story of how nine young women, captured by the Nazis for being part of the Resistance, launched a breathtakingly bold escape and found their way home. As the Second World War raged across Europe, and the Nazi regime tightened its reign of horror and oppression, nine women, some still in their teens, joined the French and Dutch Resistance. Caught out in heroic acts against the brutal occupiers, they were each tortured and sent east into Greater Germany to a concentration camp, where they formed a powerful friendship. In 1945, as the war turned against Hitler, they were forced on a Death March, facing starvation and almost certain death. Determined to survive, they made a bid for freedom, and so began one of the most breathtaking tales of escape and resilience of the Second World War. The author is the great-niece of one of the nine, and she interweaves their gripping flight across war-torn Europe with her own detective work, uncovering the heart-stopping escape and survival of these heroes who fought fearlessly against Nazi Germany and lived to tell the tale. GWEN STRAUSS is an awardwinning children’s book author and poet. Her poetry, short stories and essays have appeared in numerous places including The New Republic, New England Review, Kenyon Review, London Sunday Times and Catapult. She lives in Southern France with her three children and her dog Zola, where she works as the Director of the Dora Maar House, an artist residency programme. Miss Willmott’s Ghosts MAY

Sandra Lawrence Ellen Willmott was a remarkable woman whose horticultural achievements should have made her one of the most well-known trailblazers of her age. Yet she instead became known as a bitter, cantankerous and eccentric miser. The origins of this unpopularity can be traced back to her conspicuous absence at what should have been the pinnacle of her career: the Royal Horticultural Society’s inaugural Victoria Medal of Honour Award ceremony. Universally interpreted as the rudest of snubs, nobody has ever stopped to question why Ellen wasn’t there, or if she was really as difficult and mean as she has been portrayed ever since. With unparalleled archival access, Miss Willmott’s Ghosts is a book with it all: gossip, rivalry, squandered inheritance, forbidden love, bad marriages and, at the heart of it all, trailblazing talent. SANDRA LAWRENCE is a freelance journalist and author. She specialises in heritage and garden writing and has been featured in publications such as The Daily and Sunday Telegraph, Times Weekend, The Guardian and many more. She is a columnist for British Heritage Travel and on the Q&A expert panel for History Revealed. Sandra was shortlisted for GMG Journalist of the Year, 2018-19 and for the SLA’s Information Book Award in 2018-19 and 2019-20. When Does The Mindbending Start? The Life and Times of World of Twist Gordon King Welcome to World of Twist: the greatest lost band of all time. While fame, glory and untold riches seemed like an inevitability for this group at the turn of the ’90s, the world was simply not ready for a band of retro futurists, psychedelic adventurers and cosmic tunesmiths. Too late for Madchester, too early for Britpop and too much fun to pigeonhole, World of Twist went on to face a demoralising string of ‘what could have been’s. First, their debut single, ‘The Storm’, peaked two places outside of the UK top forty, meaning they missed out on a guaranteed Top of the Pops spot; then, when they were close to signing with Alan McGee’s Creation Records, the label decided to go with an unknown band called Oasis instead. Finally, World of Twist fell apart in a torrent of drugs, mental illness, musical differences, sartorial contretemps and all-round shouldershrugging apathy. But they burned bright and left an indelible mark on everyone who looked deep into their light, including fellow Mancunians and Oasis superstars Noel and Liam Gallagher. Now, for the first time, co-founder, guitarist and principal songwriter Gordon King tells the incredible inside story of his time with the band. Revealing the jealousy, anguish and personal demons experienced by the clashing personalities of King and late singer Tony Ogden, this compelling memoir is the story of triumph, tragedy, comedy, drama, demise and recovery.

Opening Doors Reggie Nelson An inspirational memoir of how a young man, against the odds, changed the course of his life. ‘Growing up, nobody told me that I would get to work closely with the Prime Minister, or travel the world and speak on matters that are important to me. Instead, my upbringing and surroundings placed me into a dim echo-chamber, where I couldn’t see myself beyond what was in front of me.’ Reggie Nelson had a tough upbringing growing up on a council estate in east London. He was surrounded by alcoholic parents, family arguments, youth crime and local gangs. When his father suddenly died and his mother who worked multiple jobs to get by had to bail him out of prison at age 15, Reggie knew he needed to change. After catching an episode of Joan Rivers’ How’d You Get So Rich?, Reggie was inspired to get any advice to help him turn his life around. So, he got on a train to one of London’s richest areas and started knocking on doors. Opening Doors is a story of the people who helped, mentored and guided him. It is a story of how visibility, insight and role models can give anyone the platform to learn and succeed. When one door closes, another door will always open . . . REGGIE NELSON is currently an analyst for an investment management firm in London, Group Chair of the ACCA Emerging Talent Advisory Group and a youth mentor for one of the largest youth networks in the UK. Finding Mr Perfectly Fine Tasneem Abdur-Rashid A hilarious romcom from an exciting new voice ‘Last week I turned 29. Along with the usual homemade Victoria sponge, helium balloon and Selfridges gift vouchers, my Mum’s birthday present to me was the threat that if I’m not engaged by my 30th birthday, she’s sending me off to the Motherland to find a fresh-from-the-Desh husband.’ When Zara’s Mum puts together the most archaic of arranged marriage resources (not exactly the romcom-worthy love story she had envisioned for herself), she is soon exhausted by her family’s failed attempts to set her up with every vaguely suitable Abdul, Ahmed and even Tony that they can find. Zara decides to take matters into her own hands. How hard can it be to find a husband at twenty-nine? With just a year to go, time is of the essence, so Zara joins a dating app and signs up for speed dating. When she meets Hamza, a kind, pious British Egyptian who shares her values and is clearly besotted, Zara knows he would make a good match, but there’s just no spark. Telling herself that not all marriages are based on love (or lust) at first sight, she is determined to make it work with Hamza. But Zara’s plans are derailed when she finds herself thinking of someone else. As her next birthday looms, and family pressure intensifies, Zara knows she must make a decision, but will she make the right one? When living in the UAE TASNEEM ABDUR-RASHID set up the Desperate in Dubai blog that became an internet sensation among the ex-pat community in Dubai. The Audacity Katherine Ryan ‘I’ve come to accept that being audacious is a gift I can’t escape.’ People ‘know’ my on-stage comedy persona or my scripted ballsy characters and wrongly assume that at home, I stomp around in designer dresses eviscerating those who dare cross my path. But mostly, I’m just sat eating pickles and being nice to some dogs. Whatever strangers think of me is fine with me. How audacious is that? I can always take a joke, I don’t waste time worrying about things I can’t control. I embrace the reality that you just can’t please everyone, so you might as well put yourself out there and have a laugh. As my mother always said, ‘Katherine, if we all liked the same thing, we’d all be married to your father’. I’m often asked how I developed my lurid level of courage and for tips on how others can match. The Audacity is my blueprint for just that. Lesley-Ann Jones

NOT FINAL COVER

On 12 July 1962, the Rollin’ Stones performed their first-ever gig at London’s Marquee jazz club. Down the line, a ‘g’ was added, a spark was lit and their destiny was sealed. No going back. They honed a style that bled bluesy undertones into dark insinuations of women, sex and drugs. Denounced as ‘corruptors of youth’ and ‘messengers of the devil’, they created some of the most thrilling music ever recorded. Elvis is dead and the Beatles are over, but Jagger and Richards bestride the world. The Stones may be gathering moss, but on they roll. Yet how did the ultimate anti-establishment misfits become the global brand we know today? Who were the casualties, and what are the forgotten legacies? Can the artist ever be truly divisible from the art? Lesley-Ann Jones’s new history tracks this contradictory, disturbing, granitic and unstoppable band through hope, glory and exile, into the juggernaut years and beyond into rock’s ongoing reckoning . . . where the Stones seem more at odds than ever with the values and heritage against which they have always rebelled. Good, bad and often ugly, here are the Rolling Stones as never before.

Broadmoor Charles Bronson My Journey Into Hell Broadmoor: My Journey Into Hell documents the story of long-term prisoner Charlie Bronson and his five-year stay at Britain’s most notorious mental hospital, Broadmoor. His journey has, until now, never been told. In the winter of 1979, aged just twenty-seven, the inmate who would come to be known as ‘Charlie Bronson’ was considered uncontrollable by the prison system. Certified insane, he was transferred from Parkhurst Prison to the most infamous high-security psychiatric hospital in England, Broadmoor Asylum for the Criminally Insane. There he embarked on a one-man campaign to retain his sanity, and to fight against the brutality of a largely hidden regime that relied on enforced drug control. How Charlie Bronson survived Broadmoor, what he endured and the things he witnessed are, for the very first time, documented in this sad, moving, often chilling and sometimes funny account of one man’s journey into madness and his methods for surviving. Capturing Bronson’s unique voice, it is a roller-coaster ride of madness, pain, laughter and tears. CHARLIE BRONSON is Britain’s most feared and dangerous convict, and it’s most famous. He is also an award-winning artist, and a legend of the underworld. He is the author of multiple books, including Bronson, Insanity, The Good Prison Guide and The Krays and Me. The Book of Fred Freddie Flintoff The hilarious new book from one of Britain’s best-loved national treasures! This isn’t a book of life lessons. There’s no blueprint to follow here. But, at forty-three years of age, Freddie Flintoff has had a moment to reflect, and he’s noticed that although there’s been little method in the madness, there has been the occasional common thread. The Book of Fred is filled with anecdotes, observations and the odd opinion all told with Fred’s trademark humour and no-nonsense style. Fred’s approach to life draws on the sublime (his series-winning performance in the 2005 Ashes), and the ridiculous (singing Elvis Presley’s ‘Suspicious Minds’ in front of a live audience), from highs (making the transition to top TV presenter) to occasional lows (accidentally upsetting the lovely Bruce Forsyth), from the profane (discussing Shane Warne’s barnet with Hollywood royalty) to the profound (why ‘having a go’ leads to self-respect). Throughout, Fred shares his code for success, happiness and a life fully lived. ANDREW ‘FREDDIE’ FLINTOFF (MBE) is a bestselling author, broadcaster and former England international cricketer. He is a panellist on A League of Their Own and a presenter of Top Gear. B-format Paperback • 9781788704922 7th July 22 • £9.99 • Blink Publishing Digital Audio • 9781788704915

Watching Neighbours Twice A Day How ’90s TV (Almost) Prepared Me For Life

JULY

Josh Widdicombe The hilarious Sunday Times bestseller In his first memoir, Josh Widdicombe tells the story of a strange rural childhood, the kind of childhood he only realised was weird when he left home and started telling people about it. From only having four people in his year at school, to living in a family home where they didn’t just not bother to lock the front door, they didn’t even have a key. Using a different television show of the time as its starting point for each chapter, Watching Neighbours Twice a Day... is part-childhood memoir, part-comic history of ’90s television and culture. It discusses everything from the BBC convincing him that Michael Parkinson had been possessed by a ghost, to Josh’s belief that Mr Blobby is one of the great comic characters, to what it’s like being the only vegetarian child west of Bristol. JOSH WIDDICOMBE is a stand-up comedian. He co-hosts The Last Leg on Channel 4 and Hypothetical on Dave as well as two of the country’s most popular podcasts – Parenting Hell with fellow comedian Rob Beckett, and cult ’90s football podcast Quickly Kevin; Will He Score?
