I am delighted to present the first combined fiction and non-fiction catalogue for the Bonnier Books UK Adult Trade division. Our programme in the first half of 2020 ranges from serious non-fiction to true crime and from literary fiction to historical thrillers, reflecting our ambitious growth plans as a fully-fledged publisher. The bestseller lists in 2019 confirmed our reputation as the home of focused publishing, and we are looking forward to another six months of success for our talented and dedicated authors. The 2020 Zaffre list features some of the biggest brands in commercial fiction, as well as first-time novelists. Buried from the Queen of Crime Drama, Lynda La Plante, marks the beginning of a new series guaranteed to excite her many fans, while global bestseller Wilbur Smith’s Call of the Raven reunites readers with Mungo St John, one of his most intriguing characters. Acclaimed thriller writer Rory Clements’s astonishing Hitler’s Secret is perhaps his most accomplished novel yet, and we celebrate another Mother’s Day with the much-loved Rosie Goodwin’s 1930s-set Time to Say Goodbye. Contemporary thrillers include Deborah O’Connor’s unputdownable The Dangerous Kind, Chris Whitaker’s breakthrough literary crime novel We Begin at the End, and The Catch from T.M. Logan, author of this summer’s bestseller The Holiday. In women’s fiction, we welcome Anna McPartlin, author of The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes, with her heartbreaking new novel Below the Big Blue Sky. Our Blink and John Blake Publishing teams have a host of riches to offer in non-fiction. We are excited to publish The Art of Disruption by the irrepressible Magid Magid, MEP and former Lord Mayor of Sheffield. For

fans of Adam Kay and The Secret Barrister, The Secret GP is a fascinating behindthe-curtain look at the true front-lines of medicine, and Dr Simon Roberts reveals in The Power of Not Thinking the many surprising ways in which we learn. Meanwhile, John Blake Publishing’s true crime list goes from strength to strength, with books from renowned authors such as Christopher BerryDee and Cass Pennant. But perhaps the most significant development for us this year is the launch of our new imprint, Manilla Press. Named for Nedre Manilla, the country home of the Bonnier family, a monument to their tradition as patrons of the arts, Manilla Press will publish no more than eight books a year across both fiction and non-fiction, each chosen to reflect stories of our time. Our launch list includes The Foundling, Stacey Hall’s astonishing follow-up to The Familiars, 2019’s bestselling debut novel, and, also in February, the defining book on the climate crisis: The Future We Choose by Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac, key players behind the Paris Climate Accord. Backed by a landmark marketing campaign, The Future We Choose offers a passionate and optimistic vision of a sustainable world. A rallying cry of unparalleled importance, all of us at Bonnier Books UK are proud to be part of its global message. Yours sincerely,

Kate Parkin Managing Director of Adult Trade Publishing, Bonnier Books UK

Hitler’s Secret RORY CLEMENTS Some secrets are kept closer than others. In the autumn of 1941, the war is going badly for Britain and its allies. If the tide is going to be turned against Hitler, a new weapon is desperately needed. In Cambridge, brilliant history professor Tom Wilde is asked by an American intelligence officer to help smuggle a mysterious package out of Nazi Germany – something so secret, even Hitler himself doesn’t know of its existence. Posing as a German-American industrialist, Wilde soon discovers the shocking truth about the ‘package’, and why the Nazis will stop at nothing to prevent it leaving Germany. With ruthless killers loyal to Martin Bormann hunting him down, Wilde makes a desperate gamble on an unlikely escape route. But even if he reaches England alive, that will not be the end of his ordeal. Wilde is now convinced that the truth he has discovered must remain hidden, even if it means betraying the country he loves . . . RORY CLEMENTS is a Sunday Times bestselling author. He won the CWA Ellis Peters Historical Award for his second novel, Revenger, and a TV series of the John Shakespeare novels is currently in development. Rory lives in Norfolk with his family.

Nuneaton, 1911. When Holly Farthing’s overbearing grandfather tries to force her to marry a widower twice her age, she finally says no. After he refuses to support her any longer, Holly flees to London, bringing her best friend, Ivy, with her.

A Year in the Château

KATE BRADLEY

SARAH LONG

How far would you go to save a child that wasn’t yours?

La vie en rose begins at 50! When Nicola’s husband Dominic retires, they decide not to spend their days finding hobbies to fill the time until Countdown is on. Instead, they fulfil their life-long fantasy of moving to France, reliving their youth and spending their children’s inheritance.

When ex-soldier-turned-teacher Jenni Wales sees fifteen-year-old Destiny’s black eye, she’s concerned. Destiny isn’t your average student: she’s smart, genius IQ smart, and she’s in care. But concern turns to fear when Jenni witnesses an attempt to abduct Destiny from school.

Joined by seven of their friends, they club together to invest in a chateau in Normandy. Group dinners, fine wine, beautiful scenery – they’re living the dream!

With social services and the police not taking the threat seriously, Jenni does the only thing she can think of to keep Destiny safe: she takes her.

But la vie en rose is harder than it first appears. Is there a reason why only teenagers take gap years?

But the men that are after Destiny are close behind them. What can Destiny know that would make them hunt her? And can Jenni keep her safe? But what if what Jenni thought she saw isn’t the truth at all? What if the truth is much darker than either of them want to face? Their journey will take them both to unexpected places, but both are survivors and each will surprise the other in ways they could never have imagined. KATE BRADLEY worked for many years managing services for people who are marginalised by society. She holds a first-class degree in English Literature, in addition to qualifications in creative writing and teaching. Kate lives in a small coastal town just outside of Brighton with her husband and sons. To Keep You Safe is her debut novel.

SHEENA KAMAL

MOLLIE WALTON

A stunning new thriller that will make you think, then think again. Perfect for fans of Anatomy of a Scandal and He Said/She Said.

From the acclaimed author of Eyes Like Mine comes another suspenseful thriller.

A heartwarming saga set against a brickworks in 1850s Shropshire.

After attempting to reconnect with her estranged daughter, troubled Nora Watts realises that they will always have a target on their backs unless she evens the score with Dao, who was responsible for putting a hit out on her in Detroit. In her efforts to track him down, Nora forms an unlikely partnership with billionaire playboy Bernard Lam, who is on a revenge mission of his own. On the trail they unravel a tangled web of crime and corruption that has ensnared the Pacific Northwest.

Returning to her mother’s birthplace at the age of seventeen, Beatrice Ashford encounters a complex family she barely knows. Her great-grandmother Queenie adores her, but her family’s privileged social position as masters of the local brickworks begins to make her uncomfortable.

What if the people you trust are the ones you should fear? We all recognise them. Those who exist just on the fringes of society. Who send prickles up the back of our necks. Those who have the potential to go that one step too far. And then take another step. Jessamine Gooch makes a living from these people. Each week she broadcasts a radio show looking into the past lives of convicted killers; asking if there was more that could have been done to prevent their terrible crimes. Then one day she is approached by a woman desperate to find her missing friend, Cassie, fearing her abusive husband may have taken that final deadly step. But as Jessamine delves into the months prior to Cassie’s disappearance she fails to realise there is a dark figure closer to home, one that threatens the safety of her own family . . . We Begin At The End April

CHRIS WHITAKER With the staggering intensity of James Lee Burke and the absorbing narrative of Jane Harper’s The Dry, We Begin at the End is a powerful novel about absolute love and the lengths we will go to keep our family safe. For some people, trouble just finds them . . . Thirty years ago, Vincent King became a killer.

‘Intensely captivating . . . Astonishingly good’

Now, he’s been released from prison and is back in his hometown of Cape Haven, California. Not everyone is pleased to see him. Like Star Radley, his ex-girlfriend, and sister of the girl he killed.

RUTH JONES

Duchess Radley, Star’s thirteen-year-old daughter, is part-carer, part-protector to her younger brother, Robin – and to her deeply troubled mother. But in trying to protect Star, Duchess inadvertently sets off a chain of events that will have tragic consequences not only for her family, but also the whole town. Murder, revenge, retribution. How far can we run from the past when the past seems doomed to repeat itself? KATE HELM

AMANDA MASON

The Girl Before meets In a Dark, Dark Wood in a thriller that will make you lock your bedroom door at night.

A brilliant coming of age debut about sisterhood, family secrets and a dangerous game that becomes all too real.

Immi thought she had found the perfect new home in central London: a share house with a community vibe, a rooftop terrace and daily yoga, all with a price tag that even a teacher can afford.

THEN. 1976. Loo and her sister Bee live in a run-down cottage in the middle of nowhere, with their artistic parents and wild siblings. Their mother, Cathy, had hoped to escape to a simpler life; instead the family find themselves isolated and shunned by their neighbours. At the height of the stifling summer, unexplained noises and occurrences in the house begin to disturb the family, until they intrude on every waking moment . . .

But soon after she moves into her new haven, Immi realises that it’s not quite as idyllic as it seems. Her housemates seem to be hiding a dangerous secret. As a series of pranks escalates into something darker, Immi is left questioning how safe she actually is within the walls of what should be her sanctuary.

NOW. Loo, now Lucy, is called back to her childhood home. A group of strangers are looking to discover the truth about the house and the people who lived there. But is Lucy ready to confront what really happened all those years ago?

And when you’re sharing a house, you can’t always lock the danger out. Charlotte HELEN MOFFETT For lovers of Pride and Prejudice and Longbourn, an intoxicating novel that tells the story of Charlotte Lucas. Everybody thinks that Charlotte Lucas has no prospects. She is twenty-seven years old, unmarried, plain, and seemingly without ambition. When she stuns the neighbourhood by accepting the proposal of buffoonish clergyman Mr Collins, her best friend Lizzy Bennet is angry at her for undervaluing herself. Yet the decision is the only way Charlotte knows to provide for her future, and marriage will propel her into a new world, of duty, marriage, children, grief and ultimately illicit love, and a kind of freedom. Jane Austen cared deeply about the constraints of women in Regency England. This powerful reimagining takes up where Austen left off, showing us a woman determined to carve a place for herself in the world. Charlotte offers a fresh, feminist addition to the post-Austen canon, beautifully imagined, and brimming with passion and intelligence.

The Meadow Girls

SARAH FRANKLIN

SHEILA NEWBERRY

Sometimes you have to leave home, to realise where you really belong.

A heartwarming novel from the Queen of family saga, Sheila Newberry.

Jo has spent her whole life in the Forest of Dean, but she was always the one destined to leave and have a city career. Yearning for home, she returns to take over the family butchering business, something her law degree hasn’t equipped her for.

August 1914. Twelve-year-old Mattie and her little sister Evie lead an idyllic life in the Suffolk countryside, playing in the meadows and picking watercress in the streams. Living with their family in Plough Cottage, little do they know that this perfect childhood will soon come to an end with the start of World War I.

Tessa works as a blacksmith and lives deep in the forest. She too has returned, in flight from a life she could have led, and nursing a secret illness and a past filled with guilt, shame and trauma.

As the years pass the girls go on to live very different lives. Mattie travels from Suffolk to Plymouth, and then to Canada and America, whilst Evie remains in England and pursues her career. But through marriages, deaths, births, war, heartbreak and distance, their bond remains strong.

These two women, at different stages of life and yet each desperate to find a way to be in the world, will form an unlikely friendship, and in doing so show each other a way to belong. SARAH FRANKLIN grew up in rural Gloucestershire and has lived in Austria, Germany, the USA and Ireland. She lectures in publishing at Oxford Brookes University and has written for the Guardian, the Irish Times, Psychologies magazine and The Pool. 9781785764868 • DEMY HARDBACK • £18.99 ZAFFRE

JAMES SWALLOW

HARRY SIDEBOTTOM

The pulse-pounding new thriller from the author of international blockbuster, Nomad.

A new thriller from bestselling author, Harry Sidebottom.

Ex-MI6 operative Marc Dane and his partner Lucy Keyes are thrust into the fight of their lives when their arch-enemy – the ruthless terrorist power brokers known as the Combine – turn their full attention toward the destruction of the Rubicon Group, the private intelligence agency they both work for.

Hardback

Feted war hero Gaius Furius Paullus returns home to Calabria after years of battle. Haunted by dark memories of what he has seen and done in the name of Rome, he keeps his demons at bay by immersing himself in working his family farm.

Beginning with a shock revelation from a former mentor at British Intelligence, Marc’s world is thrown into disarray when a face from his past returns from the dead – while in the corridors of corporate power, a devastating coup is engineered to shatter Rubicon forever and bring down Ekko Solomon, the enigmatic African billionaire behind the group’s vigilante activities.

When bodies start appearing – hideously mutilated – the locals blame the killings on bandits from the mountains or a supernatural being. But as the body count increases, and desperate for a scapegoat, the big landowners point the finger at an illiterate wise woman. Paullus, sure that she has nothing to do with it, sets out to prove the woman’s innocence, but in the process comes under suspicion himself. Could the brutality of his experiences in combat have turned him into a killer?

The dark secrets of Solomon’s past, a decadeslong quest for revenge and a brutal conspiracy of lies come together in Rogue – and Rubicon will never be the same.

Knowing that he will not get a fair trial, Paullus escapes, and sets a trap for the killers. But can his quest for truth offer him the chance of redemption?

A heart-breaking debut saga. Can she break free from her destiny to follow her heart? Ellen is growing up in the Oxfordshire countryside. The granddaughter of a Methodist preacher and intending to marry Charlie, a boy from the local village, Ellen’s life is mapped out for her.

Five victims. Killer caught. Case closed. Or is it?

Christopher Masters, known as ‘The Roommate Killer’, strangled four women over a three-week period in a London house in November 2012. Holly Kemp, his fifth victim, was never found. Until now. Her remains have been unearthed in a field in Cambridgeshire and DC Cat Kinsella and the major investigation team are called in, but immediately there are questions about her death. With Masters dead, Cat and the team have to investigate every lead again. CAZ FREAR grew up in Coventry and spent her teenage years dreaming of moving to London and writing a novel. WOLF KÜPER

What They Tell Us While We Sleep and How They Can Change Our Waking Lives

If you’ve heard any news reports on the upsurge in knife crime recently, you’ll have heard the words ‘county lines’. From the street slang that was once known as ‘going country’, it sees powerful drugs gangs supplying outside of the capital using children as young as twelve and vulnerable men and women to do their dirty work. Jason Farrell, Home Editor at Sky News, is the man with the inside story. In this fearless, hard-hitting account, Farrell shares in terrifying detail the story of the county lines phenomenon through the words of gang members and their victims themselves as well as the police and the country’s leading experts. A beautiful memoir and a powerful reminder of what can happen when we take time for each other. When a stressed-out Wolf tells his four-yearold daughter Nina that he can only spend ten more minutes reading her bedtime stories before getting back to work, she tells him that she wishes that they could have a million minutes together ‘on the really good things’. Wolf changes his life and, through spending more time with his daughter and her unique and frequently humorous worldview, begins to question the values he has lived his life by and discover more meaning in how to live it. WOLF KÜPER was born in Germany and, as the son of musicians, spent most of his childhood in opera houses or lurking beneath grand pianos. CHRISTIANA FIGUERES AND TOM RIVETT-CARNAC The defining book on the climate crisis that shows us how we can and will survive. The Future We Choose is a passionate call to arms, written by former UN Secretary for Climate Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac, her UN political strategist. They outline two scenarios for our future: how life on Earth will be by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement climate targets; or how it will look and feel to live in a carbon neutral, regenerative world. Each of us must confront the crisis head on, with determination and optimism. Practical and empowering, The Future We Choose features ten we can do today to make a difference. The Future We Choose is for all of us, teenagers to adults, who feel powerless to stop the climate emergency. This is the final hour: it can also be our finest hour. We can solve our climate emergency but we must act now. A Midlife Cyclist:

The Names Heard Long Ago: How The Golden Age of Hungarian Football Shaped The Modern Game

JONATHAN WILSON From the author of Inverting the Pyramid, a tour de force, fifteen years in the making, revealing the secret history of modern football. In 1953, the Mighty Magyars beat England 6-3 at Wembley, a result that echoes through the history of football. A year earlier, this Hungarian team had won Olympic gold. A year later, they lost agonisingly in the final of a World Cup that they dominated. This is the beginning, middle and end of Hungarian football in the popular imagination. Only, how come the ideas from this team spread around the world? Why do Hungarian managers spring up in Italy, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, across Europe and the Americas, bringing their secrets with them? And what are the incredible stories they have to tell, of escaping the Nazis and the Soviet communists? JONATHAN WILSON is the editor of The Blizzard. He writes regularly for the Guardian, Sports Illustrated and World Soccer. He is the author Inverting The Pyramid: A History Of Football Tactics, which was football book of the year in the UK and Italy. 9781788702997 • B FORMAT PAPERBACK • £9.99 BLINK

Stand and Deliver

PHILIPPA GEORGE Birth is one of the most universal defining moments of human existence and there, from the very start to the very end, are the midwives who help us navigate it safely. Strongest advocate, best friend, expert, cheerleader and chief photographer . . . Before, during and after labour the role of a midwife is second to none. The Secret Midwife reveals the highs and lows on the frontline of the maternity unit, from the mother who tries to give herself a DIY caesarean to the baby born into witness protection, and from surprise infants that arrive down toilets to ones that turn up in the lift. But there is a problem; the system which is supposed to support the midwives and the women they care for is starting to crumble. Short-staffed, overworked and underappreciated – these crippling conditions are taking their toll on the dedicated staff doing their utmost to uphold our National Health Service, and the consequences are very serious indeed.

The story of Britain’s hidden World War II heroines, in their own words.

The Making of the World’s Most Dangerous Street Gang.

They were the mothers, wives and teenage girls ‘doing their bit’ for the war effort, clocking in daily to work in vast factories, making the explosives, ammunition and war machines that would ensure victory. These are the intimate personal stories of an unforgettable group of women, whose hard work and quiet courage made a vital contribution to Britain’s war effort. They didn’t fire the shells and bullets, but they filled them with explosive. In doing so, they helped their country to win the war. MS-13 is one of the most infamous street gangs on earth, with an estimated ten thousand members operating in dozens of states and linked to thousands of grisly murders each year. Through the story of Alejandro and his family, Steven Dudley tells a larger story of flawed US and Central American policy, and the exploitative and unequal economic systems they foster. Ultimately, MS-13 is the story of the modern immigrant and the perennial battle to escape a vortex of poverty and crime.

The Power of Not Thinking SIMON ROBERTS A fascinating insight into the various ways in which the human body picks up information and uses it in our professional and dayto-day lives – and why we should trust the instincts this informs. Drawing on his own experience working with some of the world’s leading industry experts and looking at an incredible range of real-life examples and cutting-edge science, Roberts explains the revolutionary idea of embodied knowledge: the information that is unconsciously picked up by our body for use in almost every area of our lives – and shows why we should learn to trust the physical instincts that inform the most crucial decisions and actions in our life. We have been told that Big Data is the future and that AI will soon make all of our choices for us, but, as The Power of Not Thinking proves, humans are far more capable than we have been led to believe. An incredible look at the human capacity to learn, adapt and excel. SIMON ROBERTS is one of the world’s leading Business Anthropologists. His consultancy firm, Stripe Partners, advises some of the largest global organisations, including Intel, Facebook, P&G, Google and many other Fortune 500 companies on how to connect with their audience in non-digital ways. His work has been covered by the likes of the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, BBC Radio 4, and The Telegraph.

‘At a time when we’re entrusting greater decision-making power and autonomy to computers, and downgrading our trust in our own human intuition and instinct, this is a vindication of the powerful feelings we can have about a situation, feelings we should listen to’ SIMON ROBERTS

How Music Helped Me Connect With My Autistic Daughter

JAMES COOK A fascinating exploration of the link between autism and music, and a touching story of a father reconnecting with his daughter. During the early years of his daughter Evelyn’s life, James noticed that she was strangely taken by strong colours and patterns around the house, and that at times the only way to calm down her piercing screams would be a slow, repetitive song. As the other children in their NCT group began to outstrip Evelyn, James began to suspect that she wasn’t simply a ‘late bloomer’. At the age of two, Evelyn was finally diagnosed with non-verbal autism, a severe form of autism that hinders her mental and physical development, and that would likely affect their relationship forever. This is an extraordinary and heartbreaking story of a father trying to connect with his daughter in the face of a life-changing disability, and how music helped bridge that divide.

How To Have Successful Conversations In An Angry World

Focussing on ‘crucial’ conversations where opinions vary, emotions are running strong and the stakes are high, Dr Tim’s ten rules will help you listen, persuade, respond, adapt and – most importantly – keep the conversation progressing. CLARE GOULTY AND SUSAN BEDFORD

ROBBIE FOWLER

Written by world-leading fertility experts and edited by mums who have undertaken multiple cycles of IVF and know what it takes to succeed, this guide advises you on the entire IVF process and how to maximise your chances of success.

Anfield’s favourite son, 25 years after first signing as a professional for Liverpool, on goals, glory and the lessons he’s learnt.

All IVF topics are covered, from how to choose your fertility clinic, to understanding the stages of an IVF cycle, to how to prepare yourself physically and emotionally for the treatment. The book also shares real-life stories of a variety of IVF journeys and their inspiring outcomes and, uniquely, includes key contributions from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the UK’s independent regulator for fertility treatment and research. SUSAN BEDFORD is a scientist specialising in biology and chemistry, and CLARE GOULTY an experienced writer and magazine editor. Both have been through successful IVF procedures; both wished that such a book had been available to them at the time. SALLY CHESHIRE, CBE, who has provided the opening chapter for this book, is the Chair of the HFEA.

Goals, Glory And The Lessons I’ve Learnt

To Liverpool fans, Robbie Fowler was ‘God’. He is the sixth-highest goal scorer in the history of the Premier League and notched 183 goals for Liverpool alone. But before all of that, he was a Liverpool lad who loved the game, the Kop and everything that came with it. Engaging, personal and revealing, Robbie opens up about his astounding achievements, the price of fame and the regrets and struggles of being a professional footballer. ROBBIE FOWLER was born in Liverpool in 1975, and is one of the most revered football players in Liverpool history. 9781788703024 • B FORMAT PAPERBACK • £8.99 BLINK

My Sh*t Therapist: And Other Mental Health Stories

MICHELLE THOMAS A blisteringly funny account of living with mental illness. Michelle Thomas suffered her first major depressive episode six years ago. She read, watched and listened to everything about mental health in an effort to fix herself. It was tedious and, quite frankly, depressing . . . Which is the last thing she needed. What she did need was a therapist who would listen. What she got was a cheerful reminder that ‘it could be worse’. My Sh*t Therapist is Michelle’s answer to that, to help you navigate the world, care for your mind, and get through sh*t diagnoses, jobs, medications, habits and therapists.

Wartime Summer

MARIE LE CONTE

JOHN CHAMBERS

CAROLINE TAGGART

Gossip, power and how politics really works.

A true story of growing up amid the Troubles.

True stories of love, life and loss on the British home front.

In Haven’t You Heard?, Marie Le Conte looks at the role gossip, whispers and tittle-tattle play in all areas of politics – for the MPs and their advisers, the press who cover them and the civil servants in the middle of it all. From policy rows which aren’t about policy at all and boozy nights with dramatic consequences, to people spinning their way to the top and dark secrets never seeing the light of day, Marie explores the human side of the people running the country against a backdrop of political mayhem.

JOHN CHAMBERS was born in 1966 and brought up on Belfast’s notorious Loyalist Glencairn estate. From an early age he witnessed violence, hatred and horror as Northern Ireland tore itself apart in civil strife. He thought he knew which side he was on, but, although raised as a Loyalist, he was hiding a troubling secret – the fact that his disappeared mother was ‘the enemy’ – a Roman Catholic.

We take summer holidays for granted but, back in the 1940s, the picture was very different. War had gripped Britain. Wave after wave of bombs fell, beaches were closed off, and petrol was rationed by the forbidding question, ‘Is your journey really necessary?’

MARIE LE CONTE is a French-Moroccan journalist living in London. She previously was the Evening Standard’s political diarist, BuzzFeed News’ media and politics correspondent and went freelance in June 2017. 9781788702874 • B FORMAT PAPERBACK • £9.99 535

In this book, John explores the dark heart of Northern Irish sectarianism in the 1970s and 1980s, describing his childhood and teenage journey through the ultra-Loyalist province with searing honesty and native Belfast wit. John writes a popular blog, www.belfastchildis. wordpress.com, which deals with issues surrounding the Troubles and Northern Ireland’s more recent history. 9781789462746 • B FORMAT PAPERBACK • £8.99 JOHN BLAKE

Haven’t You Heard? A Belfast Child

But the summer days seemed to go on forever and, war or no war, British families were determined to make the best of their paralysed country. In this book, told through reminiscences from people who lived through those six long years, Caroline Taggart shows us how Britons succeeded in keeping up spirits. Touching, tragic, occasionally hilarious, it shows the British soldiering on as best they could. CAROLINE TAGGART worked in publishing for thirty years before being asked to write I Used To Know That, which became a Sunday Times bestseller. Following that, she co-wrote My Grammar and I (Or Should That Be ‘Me’?). Her record is sixteen radio interviews in one day on the subject of exclamation marks. JENSON BUTTON A funny and fascinating journey into the glamorous world of Formula 1. In his seventeen years as a Formula 1 driver, Jenson Button has picked up a thing or two about how to do the job properly. Sure, you need to be able to drive a car fast, but you also need to know the real rules for making it to the top. Like, how to tell a multiple F1 champion they need to check their blind-spot. What the difference is between a helmet and a hat, and indeed a ‘helmet-hat’. How to practise your champagne spray ahead of the big day. Why it is never, ever, under any circumstances a good idea to buy a yacht. And how to face down your team when you’ve just stacked their multimillion-pound car into a wall during practice. Born in Frome, Somerset, British Racing driver JENSON BUTTON has been in Formula 1 for seventeen years, appearing in 309 grands prix, the second most in history. He won the 2009 Formula One World Championship, driving for Brawn GP. His autobiography, Life to the Limit, was a Sunday Times bestseller in 2017.

The Secret GP:

Incredible Stories from the Insane World of General Practice For fans of Adam Kay and The Secret Barrister, The Secret GP is a fascinating and hilarious behindthe-curtain look at the true front lines of medicine. Everyone has been to a GP. And if you haven’t, you really should. Everyone has walked in with a question about a strange growth, an odd feeling, a sporting injury, an internet diagnosis, an actual problem or any of these but for their aunt (who refuses to come to the doctor themselves), and so everyone believes they know about the life of a GP. I’m here to tell you . . . you have no idea.

MAGID MAGID came to Sheffield from Somalia as a refugee aged five. He is the youngest first Green Party Lord Mayor of Sheffield, and became an MEP for the Green Party in May 2019.

I will take you on a journey behind the closed door of a GP and show you every type of patient known to man – from those who should have gone to hospital months ago to those who should just go to a therapist. I will explain why I can only spend ten minutes with someone, why the system is broken, why I’m sometimes late, why I love my job, why it makes me despair and why you should never, ever ask an NHS GP for a prescription for paracetamol.

Saboteur: The untold story of SOE’s youngest agent at the heart of the French Resistance

MARK SEAMAN Tony Brooks ended the war as a major with a DSO and MC to his name, having latterly commanded a network of some 10,000 résistants during the final defeat of the German forces who had occupied France since June 1940. By then, he was just twenty-three. From the age of twenty, when he first parachuted into enemy-occupied France, Brooks built a formidable force devoted to sabotaging the German war effort. When the D-Day landings took place in June 1944, the Resistance controlled almost the entire railway network of southern France. This is the official biography of a man who kept his secrets to the end. MARK SEAMAN, MBE, is an historian and one of this country’s leading experts on SOE.
