FRAG M EN T S EXPLORING WASTE-BASED CONCRETE FROM CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION WASTE Academic - Master Thesis | Individual Project

The inevitable generation of solid waste in industrialized societies has become a pressing concern. As economies grow, there’s a concurrent increase in solid waste production, often disposed of in landfills, adversely impacting soil, water, and air quality. The current global scenario witnesses heightened raw material extraction to meet rising demand. Simultaneously, factors like dwindling landfill space, rapid industrial expansion, and adherence to a linear take-make-waste economy have led to a twofold surge in waste accumulation, prompting a worldwide reassessment of waste and its management strategies.

This thesis delves into the potential of recycled construction and demolition wastes (CDWs) as alternative materials, leveraging the geopolymer or alkaliactivated materials (AAM) technique. This innovative approach employs CDWs as binders, mixed with recycled fine and coarse aggregates, eliminating the need for conventional river sand. With no more than 10% cement, the materials can cure at room temperature. The study seeks to assess the real-world performance of this approach, conducting binder experiments to explore new possibilities for versatility and composition, prompting a reevaluation of waste materials. This process is intertwined with the unique characteristics of waste sources, connecting with the

public to understand the concept of “waste” amidst rapid urban development.

preschool, which this project is embracing. We worked with a relationship with the surrounding buildings that is sensitive and dynamic. Therefore, wood is not only linked to the historical context but also serves as a kid-friendly material, allowing the facade to be both playful and balanced. Moreover, the pattern reflects what is happening inside. The window band in the units goes hand in hand with the functions inside as well as the construction of the building.

With a keen focus on minimizing the environmental footprint, we thoroughly craft the preschool and inform all material and detail selections through comprehensive life cycle analysis (LCA) conducted through CAALA.

As a natural gravity center, the small hill currently loved by the children sits in close proximity to the new preschool buildings as well as the café and workshop in the existing brick building.

Together, they form the project’s peaceful core and place of

arrival, with the central yard in between. The two new buildings will work in synergy with the existing preschool at the site and create a hub of preschools, providing the children with a sense of belonging. With the children in focus, the aim is to create a safe, playful, and inspiring setting for kids to grow up in, with a plus of adaptability in the space for pedagogical flexibility, and not get stuck on a small scale.

The 88,732 m² mixed-use high-rise features a dynamic interplay of vertical lines, horizontal volumes, inhabitable public terraces, and wooden cladding on the facade.

Conclave’s architectural concept envisions a pavilion designed to serve as a dynamic hub for social interactions, informal meetings, and study sessions. Strategically situated on campus

for optimal accessibility, the structure’s open facades provide a glimpse into the vibrant

activities within, reinforcing its communal identity. The design seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, showcasing nature-inspired architecture and maximizing natural light utilization. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, the building is conceived to be lightweight and demountable, aligning seamlessly with eco-centric building systems.

Nestled within the TU/e campus, surrounded by the green expanse between the Matrix, Metaforum, and Atlas buildings, and adjacent to a pond, the pavilion takes inspiration from a stack of leaves, embodying a nest-like structure. Featuring facades that can be opened on three sides, the pavilion not only facilitates easy access but also enhances functionality and the user experience by providing amenities.

An island along the western coast of Flores, Indonesia, is set to host the construction of the Alila resort, featuring 33 villa keys and a central guest room building interconnected with an event pavilion, pool bar, and beachfront facilities. The design deeply roots itself in the indigenous traditions of the area, drawing inspiration from the cultural heritage of the local Bena people and the lifestyle of sea nomads. The layout of the project strategically integrates the various volumes, ensuring harmony with the island’s topography. Furthermore, the resort is purposefully crafted to harmonize with the local climate, employing natural ventilation to minimize heat gain and reduce reliance on passive energy throughout the year.

The Iron Silk Road project aims to connect approximately 830 kilometers of rail line from China to Europe, and it binds together the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), a natural economic area covering six states of the Mekong River basin, namely Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Yunnan Province, China. As a result, Thailand is one of Southeast Asia’s top logistics performers. Despite the fact that considerable advancements are yet ahead, Thailand has been significantly implementing policies that are transforming all parts of the country’s capacity to become a leading logistics and aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
