circus

animals by Penelope Meeves, BAWL Campaign Manager

The Jaguar “… But who runs like the rest past these arrives At a cage where the crowd stands, stares, mesmerized, As a child at a dream, at a jaguar hurrying enraged Through prison darkness after the drills of his eyes On a short fierce fuse. Not in boredom— The eye satisfied to be blind in fire, By the bang of blood in the brain deaf the ear— He spins from the bars, but there’s no cage to him More than to the visionary his cell: His stride is wildernesses of freedom: The world rolls under the long thrust of his heel. Over the cage floor the horizons come…” Ted Hughes

For many years, animals have been subject to unethical means of domestication. At circuses, exotic animals are imprisoned in Beast Wagons, weary and underfed. They are paraded like clowns under the whip. The King of the Jungle is made a Jester. In response to these atrocious circumstances, in 2009, the Gold Coast City Council made the historic decision to enact a ban on submitting exotic animals to a life of imprisonment, isolation and desolation. This decision was backed by hundreds of animal’s rights activists. However, in February, Mayor Tom Tate used his casting vote to lift the ban on exotic animals. During the review, Councilor Jan Grew spoke up and asked her colleagues to consider “not approving circuses that use exotic animals in their entertainment to perform on council land.” She was subsequently ejected from the Council Chambers for ‘causing a disturbance’. There is no research of conservation benefits for the use of animals in circuses. Children do not learn anything from seeing animals perform tricks in unnatural environments. Furthermore, a scientific study by the University of Bristol in the UK confirmed that it is impossible to satisfy the behavioural and welfare needs of exotic animals in travelling circuses. This is evidenced by the abnormal behavior of animals in travelling circuses, which includes swaying, bobbing and pacing. Countries such as Bolivia have already enacted a complete national ban on all animals in circuses.

BUSA elections are more open than ever! In 2013 BUSA axed the full ticket system and as a result it is easier and simpler to run for election than ever before. No longer do you have to build or compete against a 17-person team you can now run in a pod tickets or completely alone. This guide – The Bondy’s Guide to BUSA Elections – has been written to arm students with the information necessary to take on the world that is BUSA. From an overview of this new system, to the position descriptions and campaigning process, this guide has everything you need to throw your hat in the ring this September for BUSA elections. Think BUSA’s great and want to be a part of it? Think BUSA needs a shake-up and want to do the shaking? Got an idea for a party, a publication, a sporting competition, a sponsor, an open-age event, or at least an open mind and a willingness to learn? Whatever your reason, we want you to stand up for what you believe it and run for BUSA this year.

WHAT IS THE BOND UNIVERSITY STUDENT ASSOCIATION (‘BUSA’)? The Bond University Student Association is the peak and over-arching student representative body. It is composed of a 17-person Management Committee that covers all aspects of campus life at Bond. BUSA, like an SRC at high school or a student union at a public university, addresses the needs and interests in of students in the uni¬versity community on every level: social, academic, cultural and sporting. BUSA itself is not a cultural or sporting club, or an FSA. It is the overarching student association whose job it is to facilitate the student experience through the four pods mentioned above. While BUSA does have its own events, the main purpose of BUSA is to ensure that Bond’s clubs, societies and FSAs are running effectively and have the resources to provide events and services to students. Perhaps most importantly, BUSA plays a key role in the funding of student life at Bond. The Student Activities Membership (“SAM”) paid by every student is funnelled through BUSA to our many clubs, societies and FSAs, which now number over 70. The total amount of SAM each semester is split 65% to BUSA and 35% to the gym. This year that pool of SAM funding will reach approximately $1 million. Throughout your time at Bond, there is no doubt that you will be affected in some way by one of the portfolios on BUSA. The 17-person committee is elected democratically each September during Bondstock. Being on BUSA is an unparalleled opportunity to serve students here at Bond. We won’t lie, it’s a lot of work, but it’s a heap of fun at the same time. You meet great people along the way, you learn some fantastic skills, and you get immersed in student life to an extent you otherwise wouldn’t.

WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH BEING ON BUSA? Portfolio Work: Each Management Committee member is elected to a certain portfolio. This role is their primary BUSA responsibility. Every position is different so to find out more see the positions descriptions later on. Office Hours: The BUSA office is open to students between 9am and 4pm every weekday. At least one BUSA representative is rostered on during this time and every BUSA member has one shift a week. Wednesday by the Water: Each week, BUSA offers a free BBQ to all students. The set-up, cooking, serving and pack-up of this event is conducted by BUSA members. Management Committee, Pod and Executive Meetings: BUSA conducts a full management committee meeting each week, which is compulsory for all BUSA members to attend. The Executive and Pods will also conduct regular meetings as they go about the function of their roles. Events Duty: BUSA members are required to assist in BUSA events, whether it is Club-Sign on Day, the event formerly known as Pub Crawl, Executive Drinks or Mid and End of Semester bashes. BUSA Retreat: At least once in their term, members will come together in a strategic planning workshop. O-Week: O-Week is a week-long event catering for the social needs of new and returning students. With rare exceptions, all memebrs are expected to attend and assist each O-Week in their term.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT

CAMPAIGNING Campaigning can be an exciting but stressful period for candidates. It is the culmination of a lot of thought and preparation by the candidates.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR ORGANISING AN EFFECTIVE CAMPAIGN:

PEOPLE

POLICIES

People power is vital to a successful campaign. If you run as a ticket, run with people you work well with and who you respect, and use your collective energies and networks to promote to as many people as possible.

Develop strong policies which address relevant aspects of student life and which students can relate to. Think about what can be improved at Bond for students, or what can be introduced, and how you have the right plan to do it.

PRESENCE Having a presence on campus in Week 1 and 2 is imperative to your campaign. People need to know who you are if they are going to vote for you. Make sure you get out and about at all of the events including Illegally Bond, Thursday Night at Don’s, Pub Crawl, and Bondstock, as well as being around campus to meet people and tell them about yourself and your campaign.

TIPS

PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS The BUSA By-Laws allow you to have campaign t-shirts, hats, badges, wristbands, posters, Facebook groups and websites, so make sure you have sufficient promotional material to make your campaign effective. Remember that these materials can take weeks to order, so give yourself plenty of time to organise your campaign.

VOTING DAYS The voting for BUSA elections will take place over two days this year, Tuesday and Thursday, Week 2. Voting days are critical to your campaign; no matter how great your policies are and your promotion is, if you don’t secure votes on voting days, you won’t be elected to the association. Ensure that you think about how best you can promote yourself and your policies on voting days. It is common practice for candidates to set up a table in the prescribed campaigning area outside the BUSA office and to have snacks, music and “how-to-vote cards” to give to students.
