Enrichment Enrichment activities will give you the opportunity to do something different to your usual classroom activities, adding a different dimension to your study. Cross-college enrichment activities include internal College events, such as our Freshers’ Fair and Diversity Festival. Organised trips and theatre performances will also keep you busy, not forgetting the huge range of sports and activities to improve your health, wellbeing and fitness. You’ll further enrich your studies with industry visits, enterprise activities and College and regional competitions.

Work Experience and Industry Placements
Improving your employability • Something to put on your CV for job or course applications • Evidence that you’re motivated to develop yourself and learn new things • Something to talk about in interviews • Give you the edge over other candidates • You might get a reference
Finding a good job is difficult. Employers know they’ll have to train new staff but they’re still looking for candidates with knowledge and experience of how a workplace functions. You will complete a 30 hour work experience placement, or if you’re on a Level 3 programme, you may have the opportunity to take part in an industry placement. The benefits include:
If you’re on a Level 3 course you may be able to participate in the Transition Industry Placement experience, which will become the standard for Level 3 vocational courses, soon to become the new T Level qualifications, beginning in 2021.
Bringing the working world to life • You’ll perform better at interview as you can draw on examples of real work situations • You’ll get to know how people work together and how things get done • You’ll find out if a job would suit you and the training needed to get into it • You’ll find out which work activities you enjoy • It can help you set career goals • You can relate your studies to the world of work • You’ll see the importance of English, maths and ICT skills in the workplace • You may find out how things you’ve learnt in your studies are put into practice

English, Maths & Digital Skills
Part of Life’s Essentials
Dedicated English and maths classes make up a large part of many study programmes, and these skills are also embedded into every teaching session on vocational courses. If you left school with a GCSE English and/or Maths at grade 3 or below you’ll study English and maths to gain a GCSE grade 9-4.
FAQs 1. I’m no good at English and maths. What’s the point? We think you can be and we can prove it. The teaching and learning approach to English and maths at College is very different from school - and it works! 2. What if I don’t get my GCSE grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths at school? You will continue to study to achieve these qualifications as part of your study programme, until you gain a grade 4 or equivalent.
3. So I can work towards achieving my GCSE grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths? Yes! At the College we encourage you to take a step at a time, potentially improving a grade at a time. You will be supported to work at your own pace. 4. I’ve already achieved GCSEs grade 9-4. Will I still study English and maths? Only if you want to, or if you need a Level 3 in English or maths for your desired career or HE course. We would encourage you to continue to develop your skills in maths by attending our Bright Sparks programme,

Yes, you have the ability to pass and our tutors will get you there! If you have difficulties or disabilities, English and maths will form part of your programme - we’ll help you to develop at your own pace and level. Work-related learning, work experience and preparation for work play key roles in your programmes; English and maths will be embedded into these too.

We’re one of just 64 colleges nationally who, from 2021, have been given the green light to deliver the new Gold Standard T Level qualifications. This is great news if you’re joining us in September 2020, as you’ll have the opportunity to progress on to these Gold Standard qualifications in the areas of Digital, Construction, Childcare and Health & Social Care. Why are T Levels being introduced? T Levels are aimed at young people whose career ambitions are in technical occupations that are in high-demand in the economy. Co-created with employers, they equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to get ahead in the workplace as well as producing skilled workers for the UK economy. What will T Levels look like? T Levels are technical and professional alternatives to A Levels, and will cover 15 industry-related subjects, known as pathways. Full-Time Study Programme This comprehensive study programme consisting of ESOL English, maths, IT and employability skills. Our maths classes are particularly suitable if you are not yet familiar with mathematical terminology in English. You’ll learn new words like ‘fractions and division’ and apply basic maths in everyday situations. Foundation LearninG Skills for Independence: For learners with learning difficulties & disabilities Skills for Independence provides the opportunity for learners with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities to progress their life experience, confidence and maths and English. This is achieved through further learning, developing independence and completing work experience. Our programmes provide a range of opportunities to personalise progression to the next level. The programmes focus on developing employability skills, independence, maths and English, and enterprise skills, with ‘Enterprise Week’ and competitions running throughout the year.
Supported Internships Supported Internships are a study programme primarily based with an employer in the local area. Supported Internships enable young people aged 16-24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan to learn and develop skills needed within the workplace. Alongside time with the employer young people will complete a personalised study programme to develop English, maths and employability skills. Foundation Learning offers new opportunities with smaller class sizes, an informal approach to teaching and focused support. You’ll get to sample different vocational course areas before choosing the right one for you.

Progress into Work If you’re aged 16-24 with an education, health and care plan, this course aims to develop your employability skills and is primarily based with an employer in the local area. Student Mentors We have a friendly team of Student Mentors who are always on hand to work with you and your Learning & Development Mentor to offer one-to-one pastoral support outside of the classroom; to provide informal confidential mentoring; and where relevant, to help you liaise with a range of external agencies. On pages 202-203, we’ve given you a step-by-step guide to the application and admissions process. Here, the Admissions Team answer some common questions, helping to make that move to College completely stress free. HOW DOES IT WORK once I’ve applied? As soon as we receive your application we’ll text you with a link to book your interview. If you prefer, you can book your interview time over the phone. Remember to keep your mobile number and email address up-to-date! How frequent are INTERVIEWS? We interview at least once a month, on a Wednesday or a Thursday. What’s a CONDITIONAL OFFER? It’s a promise to provide you with a College place, provided you achieve certain criteria – this could be a particular GCSE grade, good reference or suitable work placement. At your interview, you’ll be given a ‘Details of Course Offer’ form explaining the outcome of the interview. Your offer will be confirmed in writing and we’ll also send your parent/carer an email.
