Bolles Endowments

Page 1

Dear Bolles Donor,

I want to thank you personally for playing a key role in the success of The Bolles School’s philanthropy efforts during the 2022-23 school year. You were part of an extraordinary season of giving, one marked by record-breaking levels of participation. The Bolles Annual Giving Fund raised more than $1.6 million and our capital campaign continues to outperform expectations with transformative gifts-to-date totaling more than $56 million. As you know, our goals for this campaign include capital for the Frank R. Sanchez & Hope and Dana E. Fender Center for Innovation, the Aquatic Complex and the Gund Resident Hall for Girls, but also another essential element to our success, endowments. This growth would not be possible without the support and example of donors like you who understand the importance of endowed giving. Thanks to your dedication to the School and its mission, Bolles leaders are motivated to pursue change-making plans that level up the campus experience for all Bulldogs — even those not yet admitted. More than any other source, endowment helps Bolles build for its future.

As we come near to our 100th anniversary at Bolles, we can boldly lead into the next century due in large part to the strength of our endowment, which grew more than 53% since I began my career at Bolles in 2017. Building a robust endowment is vital to sustaining Bolles’ distinctive legacy and we are endlessly grateful to be supported by a donor community that understands the importance of these gifts. Thank you for your forward-thinking approach to Bolles philanthropy!

The Bolles School is a 501©3 organization that depends on the generosity of its donors to succeed, and all gifts to our institution are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law. Unlike large universities and colleges that receive high levels of public funding, The Bolles School depends solely on philanthropy to uphold and elevate its student offerings beyond the day-to-day expenses covered by tuition dollars (which covers the industry-standard 85 percent of the School’s annual operating costs). Your support of endowment fills this gap — and ensures Bolles continues to be the standard-bearer for educating tomorrow’s global leaders.

The future of The Bolles School is bright and the Bolles Office of Advancement continues to uncover new opportunities to further the School’s tradition of excellence through “The Future is Now” campaign. We invite you to consider additional ways you can be a part of this momentum — there are so many incredible developments on the horizon that would benefit from your special gift, support or passion.

Thank you for supporting The Bolles School — we are always grateful for the way you approach, understand, and get behind the culture of philanthropy at Bolles.

Thaddeus “Thad” Gulliford ’89

Thaddeus “Thad” Gulliford ’89 isn’t sure if he had “passions” as a Bolles student in the mid-1980s, but he is quite certain of one fact: his coaches, teachers and administrators at Bolles never gave up on him and his pursuit of excellence, no matter the setbacks or challenges.

“I was not the best of students, but I have really wonderful memories of attending Bolles – I played football, and some basketball, but football more than other sports,” said Gulliford, who now lives in Naples with wife, Tina, and their two children. “I loved the experience of playing with those guys and learning from the coaching staff. They were always there and didn’t let up on me – they helped me through adversity, and that’s why I give.”

“I hope that for a student who may have academic struggles, someone takes notice and that they – like I have – look back on their time at Bolles and see there was a lot of support to help them get where they are today...”

Gulliford established the Mike Barrett Endowed Fund for Coaching Excellence in 2018 and the Bolles Football Endowment Fund in 2019 to honor the football coaches and staff who were integral to his Bolles experience. The Bolles Football Endowment provides a source of income to support coaching staff salaries and stipends as well as post-season travel, equipment and banquet needs. The Mike Barrett Endowed Fund provides support for seminars, education and professional development opportunities for assistant football coaches.

“Talk about a guy I loved being coached by, Mike Barrett was not only a good coach but a good listener — he was always there — an amazing mentor and person as a whole. I thought, what better way to give back than to create an endowment in his name,” Gulliford said.

Gulliford hopes the endowments advance the legacy of coaches like Barrett and other faculty and administrators who refuse to let students slip through the cracks.

“I hope that for a student who may have academic struggles, someone takes notice and that they – like I have – look back on their time at Bolles and see there was a lot of support to help them get where they are today,” Gulliford said. “I have so many amazing memories and had a lot of great teachers and coaches to hold my hand and help me through.”

Mary Lou and John Chappell

Mary Lou and John Chappell, board members of the Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation in Philadelphia, enjoyed watching great niece and nephew Madeline ’19 and Colin ’22 excel in their educational experiences at The Bolles School over the years. Mary Lou and John have been grateful for their successes in academics, the arts and athletics from their home in Pennsylvania, and during on-campus visits Mary Lou described as “just beautiful.”

Most remarkable to Chappell were the personal strengths and life skills her niece and nephew honed during their 12-year tenure at The Bolles School.

“I see the drive these two have and their mannerisms – they are motivated and have such confidence and self-esteem, which is the product of their Bolles education,” she said. “It is such a global school – it’s a great pattern; other schools could learn a lot from Bolles’ methods.”

“Bolles is a wonderful example of a school doing it right.”

Inspired by Madeline and Colin’s experiences, the Chappells wanted to help more students achieve the same level of independent school success. The couple established the Chappell Culpeper Family Endowed Fund for Financial Assistance at The Bolles School in 2018, a year before their great-niece received her Bolles diploma on the River Campus. The gift was made as an annual application of specific funds from the Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation, which focuses its philanthropy on education and healthcare causes in the Philadelphia area.

“The endowment is not in Pennsylvania, but it was such a worthy cause to us because Bolles is doing such a wonderful job down there,” Mary Lou said.

The Chappell Culpeper Family Endowed Fund is given to applicants who demonstrate financial need, strive for academic excellence –particularly in the core curriculums of English, math, foreign language and history, adhere to Bolles’ core values and Honor Code and demonstrate a passion for servant leadership.

“I wanted to do that as a thank you to what our family has reaped attending Bolles,” Mary Lou said. “Bolles is a wonderful example of a school doing it right.”
