If powder is added to a horse’s feed, it should be wet and you have to be certain that the horse will finish the ration. Pastes are generally more expensive per dose, but they are incredibly convenient when travelling and competing and can be useful if horses won’t drink electrolytes in their water. There are a vast array of Equine oral electrolyte solutions, powders and pastes on the market, and it can be incredibly difficult to work out which is most suitable. Some formulations contain prebiotics, such as Audevard’s Vetidral, which stimulate electrolyte replacement and absorption, while others, like Cavalor’s An Energy Boost, have B vitamins, amino acids and glucose for an instant boost. Every horse and situation should be assessed individually to ensure the most appropriate supplement is given. Check the label carefully and look for chloride combinations, which enable the electrolyte to be quickly absorbed, for example, sodium chloride. Avoid products that list sugar, dextrose or syrup as the first ingredient, unless your horse is
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances have serious physical effects on any horse and can play a significant role in a horse’s recovery and performance. They can lead to fatigue, muscle damage, laminitis, azoturia (tying-up), or simply a loss in performance; in fact, dehydration is understood to be the most common cause of underperformance and is said to be like ‘competing with a hangover’.

Usually, a horse on a balanced, good quality diet, with access to a salt lick, will receive enough electrolytes, however, there are a number of situations where horses should be given supplementary electrolytes, such as;
If you are unsure whether your horses need electrolytes, it is always better to feed a slight excess and allow them to regulate what they need, as long as they are hydrated and water is available. If the recommended dose is offered, any excess electrolytes will be eliminated harmlessly.

She shares a yard in Nottingham with her partner, fellow showjumper Graham Lovegrove. Thirty-two-year-old Louise has consistently enjoyed medal-winning success over the years. She made her debut on 5* Senior Nations Cup teams in 2013 with the grey mare Hello Winner IV, a horse which she produced herself. Fast forward a few years and Louise was crowned National Champion at Bolesworth in August 2020, riding Mike Elvin’s 12-year-old gelding PLS Halo Diamond – a horse she’d had back in her yard for just a week. Now, Louise returns to the Bolesworth venue where she has enjoyed recent-year high-profile success and is poised to contest the 2022 Al Shira’aa Young Horse Championships. She and Graham bring no less than seven young horses to the event including 4yo gelding Senator de Vauxelles, 5yo mare Miss Fiade, 6yo gelding Caliblue PS, 7yo gelding Kung Fu as well as geldings King Blue and Untouchable Wizard (who have both qualified for Hoys), and mare Pheline Van’T Hageland
Although Louise secured her first international successes in her teens, she has never been one to back off and become complacent. Indeed, her approach to work and the sport she loves is without compromise. Even the birth of daughter Daisy in October 2021 didn’t deter the Bolesworth winner from ‘business as usual’ and, as for holidays …. “You just have to get on with it really. It’s as simple as that. Daisy is very good because she comes to all the shows, or wherever we go. It’s all she knows and we’re lucky to be in a position to travel as a family unit.” Louise currently rides for around five owners, including producing three horses for prolific supporters of the sport, Old Lodge Stud. “I’m really looking forward to coming to the Young Horse Championships as it’s always great to be jumping at Bolesworth. It’s a fantastic show to bring on the upand-coming stars. We’re hoping to get a couple of horses through to Lanaken as that’s been one of our goals for these horses.”

he Al Shira’aa CSI2* 1.45m World Ranking Grand Prix, was always going to be a fast and furious affair. With fences coming thick and fast, the challenging course tested the competitors. Thirteen riders were seeded through to the second round against the clock, three of whom had clear rounds. Expertly ridden by James Smith, Simply Splendid fought for every stride and was fast from the start and the pair proved to be worthy victors.

A fast paced, thrilling jump off saw three worthy combinations deliver faultless rounds with the evercompetitive Ronnie Jones and prolific mare Kaleche taking the Windmill Farm Estate 6-year-old Championship title. The highly anticipated Al Shira’aa 7-year-old Championship brought an exciting promise of future talent. Fiftyfour horses and riders made it through the qualifying rounds, and the highly competitive class produced fourteen clears to go through to the second round against the clock. Some 18 months ago, Gemma Wright was offered her dream job as the main rider at Windmill Farm Estate. Here she talks about her journey, the horses and her aspirations.BOLESWORTH.COM
“When aroseopportunitytheforme to take over the main rider position at Windmill Farm, I couldn’t believe my luck. It’s been a longstanding dream of mine which I never thought would be possible. However, thanks to the amazing support from my brother Dan (Wright), trainer/producer, and rock, Kim Belton, second rider Holly Hammond, and my amazing team at home - the dream has become a reality. “I now have a team of six horses all competing successfully and competitively at 1.30/1.35m. I’m most proud of my main boy Justin Bieber (x Carrera VDL). He was my first young horse and I have taken him from a very green 5yo to getting placed in 5yo, 6yo and 7yo classes and finals all over Europe. He is now competing successfully 1.35m as an “Jadessoh8yo.(8yo gelding x Action Breaker) is a ride I took over when he was a 6yo jumping 1.20m classes. I have then produced him to jumping clears around 7yo classes and finals all over Europe, including a top ten finish in his first 1.40m 7yo final in Peelbergen. “My ‘miss consistent’ is It’s Comming (9yo mare x Carambole). She has jumped endless clears around 1.30m nationally and internationally and is rarely out of the placings. This year we have stepped up to 1.35m where she is still as impressive as ever! My proudest moment to date is jumping clear, and finishing in the top ten in a huge and tough 1.35m Pro Challenge indoors at the BlueChip Championships surrounded by good company “I also have some young horses I’m very excited for, including Liquily ( 6yo x Dakar VDL). I’m so thrilled to be taking over the ride of this promising mare from Holly Hammond next year. She has done the most amazing job producing her over the last 18months from a late-starting 5yo due to her size, to now jumping 1.20m classes! “Leave it To Me (6yo gelding x Indoctro) Dennis is my first homebred out of my first jumping mare Sienna (Terikse). Produced by Holly, I was honoured to take over the ride in January and have been jumping clears 1.20m classes ready for 6yo classes. Equally as exciting is the fact that Holly is currently producing his 4yo half brother x Carrera VDL. “With an eye on the future, I’m hoping that by the end of this year I may be jumping clear roundsaround 1.40m classes - with the ultimate goal of being competitive around 2* 1.45m classes. Hopefully my two amazing 8yos will make this another ‘dream come true’ for me one day.”

Dallamires Stables –on the Up & Up Dallamires Stables is based just outside of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Set up by showjumper George Whitaker and his wife Michaela at the start of 2018, the yard houses high-quality competition and training horses as-well asales horses for all levels of show jumping. Competing both Nationally & Internationally, the yard has horses ranging from foals and youngsters up to and including Grand Prix and Championship level horses.

In 2015 George was selected to be part of the Rolex Young Riders Academy where only six people were chosen, worldwide. Through this he went on to train with Belgium-based Olympic rider Jos Lansink. He then went on to ride in America, then back to Europe, before heading home to England to set up Dallamires Stables.
Sporting Family George is the son of Ian and Alison, and the nephew of the famous duo John and Michael Whitaker. Outstanding Achievements Prior to setting up Dallamires Stables with George, Michaela was very successful and well known for producing and competing show horses. Winning titles at the prestigious Horse of The Year Show an impressive eight times, as well as wins at the Royal International Horse Show and many other Championship shows. In 2017 Michaela won the outstanding achievement award from the British Show Pony Society. Michaela started showjumping in November 2017 as a break away from the show horses and has already had many international and national wins. Her many years’ experience schooling the horses on the flat, perfectly complements George’s showjumping skills to train the horses to achieve maximumDallamirespotential.Stables, along with Michaela’s father Martin Wood, have grown the yard impressively over the last few years, with their own breeding programme, specially selecting top stallions from the sport to well-suited mares. They now house an impressive 60 horses. Over the last year Michaela has specialised in sourcing and training ponies for America to head over there to compete in the Hunter classes. Many of whom have, just this year, gone on to champion their sections at WEF. Expansion zone Last year Andrews Bowen installed an impressive 90 x 50 outdoor arena to add to the yard’s existing high-quality facilities; an all-weather gallop, a second outdoor arena (40 x 30) as well as a 90 x 30 indoor, all set within the beautiful Yorkshire dales.
