Letter from the Editor I love this time of the year, everything is green and new life is blooming all over. After a long winter a new season has begun, with a fresh start. But we can’t change the future if we don’t change the current. That is why this issue is an important one because if you don’t take care of yourself you don’t have much to give in the future. We all strive to be better but we have to make the changes personally to strive for better. It is ok to take time for yourself, tell yourself that again, it is ok to take time for yourself. If you find it hard, start with little things like, journaling about your day to get rid of frustrations or share the joys of the day. Or, go to your room a little early to just unwind from the day and my favorite is to just take a few minutes to breathe. My watch has to tell me to breathe when my stress level gets too high. I find that a little funny but it helps. Everything relaxes and life doesn’t seem quite as bad. It is very important to take time to take care of you, nobody can do it for you, because you matter!

Darla H.

SUMMER

ENTERTAINMENT

Five minutes. I tap my shoe impatiently. The last day of school has dragged on for what feels like eternity. I sigh as my stomach rumbles. All I want to do is go home and eat too much pizza. I glance outside at the bright summer sun. An icecream truck goes by. Tomorrow I plan to sleep in until noon. My lunch will consist of ramen and cereal. I will then lay on the couch eating chips. I might get into my bathing suit and go to the pool. That ice cream looked good. I will eat hot dogs outside in the hot sun and too green grass. One minute. I will stay up too late eating candy. I feel my pulse quicken. Briiiiiiiiiiinnnnngggg on Summer!

Ellie, 14

Summer is coming so that means getting ready for family cookouts. The best way to get ready is to make sure the best foods are being served. For me, those foods include: bratwursts, hotdogs, burgers, Mac n cheese, and sweet potatoes. I love these foods because the brats and hotdogs are so tasty and then you also have mac n cheese with sweet potatoes, delicious! If you have ever mixed all these foods together you know how good it tastes. Lastly, what tops it all off is strawberry shortcake which for me is the best dessert because it’s sooooo good!

RIMWORLD T IPS... GAME REVIEW

When you start a new colony, DO NOT make a mountain base. If you do, then you will run out of food quickly. It takes a long time to make one. If you want, make one later in the game. When you make a defensive structure, you don’t have to use sandbags. You can make it out of walls if you are low on steel. In the beginning of a colony, you can make wood walls, but later in the game REPLACE THEM WITH STEEL OR STONE ONES. Otherwise, your colony could end up in flames. It has happened to me. It is good to have a mix of weapons. Good accuracy means longer reload time. Less accuracy means less reload time. It is good to have a mix of the two. This is a good one: 2 bolt-action rifles, 2 machine pistols, and maybe an LMG. Be very prepared. When you build a simple research bench, research smithing, machining, gunsmithing, blowback operation, and then gun turrets. DO NOT research anything else until you have finished that. I always do that, and it works out really well. After you finish researching machining, immediately build a machining table. You can make guns there. Just make sure that you have enough steel and components to make them. The better the gun, the more work. An LMG takes about 637 work to make (And you have to research gas operation). A machine pistol takes about 137 work to make. When you finish gun turrets, build a defensive structure. This one HAS TO BE MADE OUT OF SANDBAGS. After you finish building the sandbags, build power conduits (And a generator). After you finish the conduits and generator, build steel mini-turrets. They will attack enemies.

If you are in middle to late-game, there is a chance for a tribal raid. Tribal raids are giant raids of about 100 people. If you get one, BE WORRIED. They are capable of mass destruction. Move to your defensive area immediately. When you start to build a starship, be prepared for A LOT of raids. There will be about two a day. If you are a beginner, use the storyteller Phoebe Chillax. She is a very good storyteller to start with because she will give you a lot of time to prepare between events. If you go to options, you can change your storyteller. I like the seed town. I like it because I am sure that I’ll get at least one good starting colonist.

Minecraft Tips... If you spawn near a mountain, you should build a pickaxe first instead of an axe. You should do this because you can dig into the mountain to build a house. It is a lot less work that way because you do not have to make the walls and roof. If you build a house on a cliff, make sure that you are not on multiplayer. Do not be on multiplayer because someone can come out of nowhere and mine the blocks near your house so that you can not get out. There are some cool builds that can be made only in creative. You can make a world in creative. Creative allows you to build anything out of any blocks. You can not die in creative. It basically makes you a god. There are a ridiculous amount of possibilities. Make as much stuff as you want. A good idea for a build would be a roller coaster park. You could have as many roller coasters as you want. It would be a lot of fun. It is awesome. I built a roller coaster and called it The Galleon. Basically, you go back and forth repeatedly until you stop the ride.

Meet Tamika Catchings!

CONSISTENTLY CHANGING THE GAME

Indiana’s “do-everything” forward completed 16 seasons in the WNBA, stepping away from her future-hall-of-fame-career following the 2016 season. Her naming as recipient of the very first ESPN Humanitarian Award in 2015 and a 14-year run of community service by her Catch The Stars Foundation are testament to her work off the court, however – more impactful than her MVP career on the court. Since her playing retirement, she serves as director of player programs and franchise development with Pacers Sports & Entertainment, a post that keeps her engaged working with all three Pacers franchises: the Indiana Pacers, Indiana Fever and Ft. Wayne Mad Ants. She operates the cozy Tea’s Me Café on the north side of downtown Indianapolis, and continues her service as an ambassador with the NBA and WNBA. She serves on a developmental committee with USA Basketball. She also serves as an SEC ESPN Women’s Basketball Analyst. In March 2016, Catchings released an autobiographical story, Catch A Star: Shining through Adversity to Become a Champion sharing her story of overcoming hearing loss, separation from family, high expectations and the pain of debilitating physical injuries. She reached for the stars with hard work, perseverance and her faith in God.

DIY Apple Sauce Applesauce is easy to make. By varying how long you cook the sauce, you can choose to make it chunky or smooth. Cooking unpeeled apples allows the applesauce to become a pretty shade of pink. For smooth applesauce, put the cooked sauce through a food mill or wire strainer. Enjoy homemade applesauce with potato pancakes and sweet and sour red cabbage.

Makes about 3 cups

Ingredients

7 medium apples ½ cup apple juice or water ¼ cup sugar or honey, optional ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional

Instructions

Core and cut the apples into bite-sized chunks. Put the apples into a medium saucepan. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, stirring often, until the apples are tender.

N O I T A C VA My all-time favorite vacation spot had to be when my family and I went to Florida to visit the cities of Tampa and Orlando. We had a lot of fun going to the many attractions. SeaWorld and the Aquarium which was one of the best parts of the whole vacation. The aquarium was very nice and had a lot of different sections like the deep sea in the Amazon and the coral reef. We saw all kinds of different animals and everything from birds to American alligators. I don’t really like animals but the dolphin, orca, and sea lion shows were pretty cool. The other part of our vacation was my family watching me compete in the Adidas 7 on 7 football national championship tournament in Tampa. There were teams from all around the United State and players had lounge which was full of video games. We even got free tennis shoes and football cleats. Even though I got hurt, the experience was very cool which is why Orlando and Tampa are my favorite vacations spots.

takes on

American Ninja Warrior Kolton: What made you decide to go on American Ninja Warrior? Tamika: The thing that made me want to do it was that it was another challenge and opportunity to do something really cool. It wasn’t on my bucket list-but I added it & checked it off all at once. Kolton: What did you do to prepare? Tamika: I’ve been doing a lot of training at Trainyard 317. The biggest thing was strengthening my fingers and doing a lot of obstacle training. Kolton: How did you feel going into the event? Tamika: I was confident going into it. I felt like I did enough training-I got a lot stronger and was ready. Kolton: What inspired your outfit? And special shirts? Tamika: I wanted an outfit that crossed over from fever/WNBA with a little bit of a twist. My family wore Dream Catchers shirts-since I’m always doing things that people always dream about & I actually do it. Kolton: Some of the ninjas have crazy Ninja names. What’s yours? Tamika: Umm-just Mika! Kolton: Tamika the Tea Ninja or-triple double ninja Tamika: no comment

Post event

Kolton: What was it like? Tamika: It was awesome...much different than what I’m used to. Haven’t done an individual sport so that was a huge difference. No teammates to count on-just me! Biggest difference was that it was an outdoor sport. But what was most exciting was walking onto the stage during introductions and actually having a chance to compete on the course. Kolton: Any advice for aspiring Ninjas. Tamika: Biggest thing is to find a gym and a great trainer. Be prepared, have an open mind. Just like anything in life, when you set a goal, know that you’re going to have to work hard to achieve it! May/June 2019 21

A R I A N A B. QUE NOS PASO

What got you into singing? When I was 7 years old my mom and dad had me join a choir. I used to be obsessed with holding the microphone, haha, but being part of that choir was my definitely my first stages into singing. My parents say that ever since I was a little girl I have always had music in me!

Were there any major roadblocks growing up that you had to overcome? Definitely, I remember when I first audition for Idol Kids and I didn’t get through. Being 9 years old it can definitely be something that we take harshly. However I did have so much family and friends support that I was able to overcome this and went on to be on “La Voz Kids” (The Voice Kids)

How does growing up in Puerto Rico make things different for musicians? Growing up in the Island as a musician is very very difficult if you want to make it a career. Puerto Rico is a very musical country everyone is always happy and singing, however, the opportunities to make an album or even a single without traveling outside of the Island are very slim. The upside is that I grew up surrounded by music with all the festivals and not to mention Christmas time, haha.

What message do you try to send through your songs? I want to inspire and motivate people and to be able to have people of all ages identify with my songs.

Is there anyone that influences you, or that you look up to? My influences for style are Becky G and J-LO. As for my voice and music style are Christina Aguilera, Demi Lovato and Puerto Rican singer Kany Garcia. 22

May/June 2019

What happened that made you realize this is what you wanted to do?

FEAT URED

Auditioning and being a part of all the talent TV shows definitely gave me the courage to know this was something I wanted to pursue.

What effect do you think music has on the youth? I honestly think with how much access we have to music now days, speaking as a young person myself, music is an avenue and escape for many things. From having a stressful day at school to wanting to relax and have some fun. Music helps us shape our world.

How has your music changed you as a person? My gosh! Music has helped me to not be shy, to be more outgoing, to have an avenue to express myself and my feelings and to reach others in ways words can't.

From artist to aspiring artist, what advice do you have in the beginning, when you get started? A very important advice is to not take criticism personally. There is a lot of hate and you just gotta stay positive and surround yourself with positive and encouraging people. Also it’s a lot of hard work so persevere, persevere, persevere!

What is your most vivid memory on the road to becoming a musician? So far performing on live TV is definitely up there with the top. But I have a big concert coming up and I think when that happens that will top that J.

Mee t

y d d a M I was born in Jiangxi, China. I am eleven years old. My date of birth is November 13, 2007. I got to the U.S. from my mom and grandmother picking me up. I got on a plane to head from China to Missouri. It took more than 13 hours to get to the U.S. I am glad to be a U.S. citizen because I feel like I am free to do things I wouldn’t be able to do in China. I like to play sports because I love to compete because I feel I’m very competitive. If our team doesn’t win but play good I still have some satisfaction. I love coming up with strategies on how to win like making plays on how to score and even practicing to get better. I started playing sports when I was 4 years old playing on a YMCA soccer rec team, called the MIGHTY MIGHTS. I feel that sports are important in my life because they help me stay active and not get bored doing nothing. I also like it because it teaches to be more social with my teammates and have good sportsmanship with the other team. Sports involves life skills as in knowing how to manage my time and keep good grades up so I can play sports. If I do not have good grades I would not be able to play sports because grades are the most important thing in my education. Sports also teaches me how to be very humble and have great sportsmanship. Knowing if our team loses, I should be a good sport and not be too upset. Sports teaches me to work hard and work to get better than I already am. If you work hard in practice it will pay off in the game because it will all eventually pay off. I go to St. Joseph Cathedral School and I am in 6th grade. School is actually a very important part of my sport life. If I want to play sports and be eligible to play, I have to have good grades. 28

FEAT URED

I actually do not prefer one sport over another because I love all of them! I feel that they are all unique and different so that is why I love them all. My family supports me a whole lot by driving me to the places where I need to be, like practices and games. They also support me by buying me the equipment that I need for each sport. I also practice at home with my mom and dad. The other activities I enjoy doing are piano, video games, and watching movies and tv shows. Not all of my friends play sports, but some do. Some of them are my teammates. I spend time with the people that don’t play sports by going to places like school dances, school, and hanging out. The ways I practice are usually outside in my driveway. I like to stay after practices like in basketball when I shoot free throws and just practice my shots. I work in the batting cages and have people who help me train sometimes. I visualize my high school career as planning on going to Helias High School with lots of my friends. I’m hoping I can play the sports that I love to play now in high school.

We also have a retired Pike teacher as a mentor. Credits for story: Malik 17, Cindy 17, Brian 17, Rebekah 19.

Student Quotes: What is your favorite part of being on 1018? My favorite part of being on 1018 is when we cheer loudly and proudly in the stands. When all of us are cheering for our drive team, there is always an energy that radiates and livens up the room. Especially when other teams join along, the whole entire experience is super fun. It always makes me glad to be a part of this team. - Myky, programming team, 18 My favorite part of robotics is all the members involved and the relationships we have with each other. - Jose, mechanical, 17 My favorite part of being on 1018 is the environment, you feel so welcome. It’s feels like everyone is your family and there’s no judgement at all. Kelly, mechanical team, 18 What goes into preparing for a competition? A lot of work. A lot of planning, a lot of late nights. We also have to work around the drive team so they can practice. The days before competition the pit crew has a lot of packing, organizing, learning about all about the robot so we can talk about the robot to the judges. We have to make any last-minute changes and learn about the new changes. We work with our mentors a lot to make sure we understand everything. Alex, mechanical team, 18

When preparing for competition bringing along snacks and our "cheer gear" is important! - Jose, mechanical 17

FEAT URED

There’s A LOT that go into preparing for a competition. It can be as complicated as doing last minute adjustments to the robot to cheering and making props. Everything that everyone does plays an important role within preparing for competition. Kelly, mechanical team, 18 Describe the feeling when you compete against other teams. I don't go watch the actual competition because our mentors don't want us to worry about the robot. But when the match is over, and they are bringing the robot back I think "I hope they broke nothing too bad"- Alex, mechanical, 18 I feel excited when facing off against other teams as you never know what is going to happen. Jose, mechanical, 17 The feeling is hard to explain, it’s a feeling you get just before you step into a job interview or getting ready to present in front of a whole classroom. It’s a feeling of excitement, determination and being nervous all mixed together. Kelly, mechanical team, 18 Describe the teamwork that goes involved in robotics. Our teamwork requires understanding and cooperation in order to solve problems quickly. Jose, mechanical, 17 The teamwork that gets involved is all around. Everyone plays a role and everyone knows what they are doing once they step in. We have leads and mentors that guide each student what to do and what needs to get accomplished that day. Kelly, mechanical team, 18 What's the biggest challenge for 1018? The biggest challenge is making last minute changes and not knowing if the changes are going to work until competition. -Alex, mechanical team, 18 The biggest challenge is combining all the different groups on the team to have a successful season - we are only as strong as our weakest link. Jose, mechanical, 17 The biggest challenge of 1018 is becoming world champion., Kelly, mechanical team, 18

Power of Positivity! Did you know that your thoughts can shape your actions and who you become? One of our Dream Catchers sessions focused on the importance of watching your words and being kind to ourselves and to others. One way to do this is to speak positive thoughts and affirmations every single day. Instead of getting frustrated and saying, “I can’t do this”, you can turn that into a positive affirmation by saying, “I am smart and I can do hard things”!

Take a few minutes to jot down a few of your own affirmations:

Tear this page out & hang it somewhere that you can see it every day! You are smart, talented, unique and kind! Remember that daily!

ON THE COVER: Middle School Robotics Team 48466 We are Vex IQ Robotics Team 48466, from Guion Creek Middle School in Indianapolis. We build robots out of plastic parts to compete in a game with other teams. We program the little computer brain that tells the robot motors to move when the driver pushes the controller buttons. We program the robot to play the game by itself in special programming competitions. In a couple days we’ll compete with teams from around the world, because we’re going to the World Championships! This is a big deal for anyone, but it’s a really big deal for us because we’ve never gone to World’s before. We were the only urban middle school to go to the State Championships, and now we’re the only public middle school from Indiana to go to World’s. In the robotics competitions we go to, the game changes every year. This year, your goal is to score as many points as you can. To score points, you have to place hubs into the score zones. Hubs are spool-shaped plastic things that are about 4 inches tall that our robot can push around and pick up. Hubs in the score zones are worth certain amounts of points based on the color. The orange hubs are worth one point while the yellow hubs are worth 2 points. The scoring areas can only hold 4 hubs on the base of the area. But that’s where stacking comes in. You can stack hubs on top of the previously placed hubs for double points. Another way to get points is to make the robot do a pull-up on a bar in the middle of the field. The robots can get points on the bar 3 different ways: parking under the bar (1 point), low hanging (2 points), and high hanging (4 points). Parking is when your robot is driven until it is under the bar. Low-hanging is when the robot is hanging off the ground and you can slip a piece of paper under it. High hanging is when you can get a hub under the robot. Some robots are made of metal, but ours are made of a plastic building set with a computer brain. We use wires to connect the motors in order for the robot to move. Gears are a key part in the speed of the robot. Gear ratio is what helps certain speeds with the gears on the robot. With the correct gear ratio, the robot can move extremely fast. With a similar gear ratio on the crane, we can pick up hubs in a swift motion. 36

FEAT URED This has been a long and eventful robotics team season for us, and many things have changed since we started. I remember when I first started. Our goals that seemed like great feats at the time now look ridiculously easy, leaving the team asking why it took us a while to surpass these original goals. In our first competition, none of the teams competing did too well. The girls’ team got an award, but it was not the type that would give us the bid for state. We got the Designer Award, which is for having the best engineering notebook, where we document our problems and how we fixed them. When we first started, there were four teams. It was also really crowded, with most of the people not coming back after maybe a week at most. I guess they didn’t think robotics was work! In the end, only four teams remained: the group with experienced, hard-working students from the year before, and the all-girls team. Some teams were rearranged because some people didn’t work well together, and some teams fell apart because they just came to play, and not to work. They know who they are. The all girls team, eventually merged together with the experienced team, and we are down to two teams. Our team has gone a long way since we started out in robotics this year. It’s amazing to think that possibly one of the main reasons I joined was because of people I knew, despite how interested I was in robotics. Things have developed so much, and our team has accomplished something that was just wishful thinking before we actually made it. When we got our bid to worlds, I remember how happy everyone was. It was the first time we had ever gotten a bid to worlds, not to mention we were the most diverse school in Indiana to go to Worlds. It was also amazing that we were the only urban public middle school in the state to go. Of course we would be happy about it. Even though only one of our 2 teams made it. The team that made it had a hard time in the previous competition, and the other team had a really bad day for points. Neither of our teams made it just looking at our points in the game. The way we got to worlds is through the Excellence award: for doing well in every category. We had high scores in skills, programming, notebook, and STEM project. Our notebookers record data like robot advancements, drawings and photos of new parts we built, problems and how we solved them, changes in the team, and anything else that happens during meetings. Our STEM project was a video we made on computer encryption. Our drivers spent a lot of time practicing to get good scores in skills and to do well in alliances. Our programmers worked really hard on programs for the robot and continue to work hard now just like our drivers. We made it to World championships because of our hard work, commitment, and behavior. Since the beginning of the year we have been working towards this moment. When things need to get done, there’s no playing around. You need to be serious. We are serious, and we are seriously going to the World Championships! Wish us luck! May/June 2019 37

DEAR FUTURE ME

Mistakes! Mistakes! Mistakes! It seems like all I do is make mistakes and sometimes it’s the same thing over and over again. I’m never going to get it right! I said the wrong thing to a friend and now she’s upset with me. I didn’t mean it in the way that she thought but she doesn’t care and she doesn’t want to be my friend anymore. I got suspended for cutting class and I didn’t tell my mom but she found out and now she’s upset with me. I got grounded for a month and I’m going to miss the biggest party of the year. In another instance, I didn’t use my time wisely. I decided to watch television instead of studying for my final and I failed. This dropped my G.P.A. because -Past You the final was worth the bulk of my grade. Why is it so difficult to make the -Past You right choice at the right time?

DEAR PAST ME

Well you continued to make more mistakes. Some were not so bad and others, well, let’s just say, they weren’t the best. You got into a little more trouble but after a while you got tired. Tired of not being able to go anywhere or do the fun things that other teens were doing. I must say, you finally got it together. You begin to learn from your mistakes. The older you got the fewer mistakes you made because you begin to think about the outcomes before you made your decisions. However the truth of the matter is that, every mistake that you made, prepared you for where you are in life now. If I were you, I wouldn’t change NOT one thing, because your PAST and your PRESENT has presented you with a great FUTURE. Keep up the good work and don’t forget to help others along the way! -Future You

Self Care St ruggles Middle School environment is not always good! Look. Middle school sucks. I personally haven’t had the easiest middle school experience. When you’re in middle school all you want to do is get out, but before you do that you have to graduate. Which by the way is a huge pain but you have to get through it. And you will want to try and get through it the least painful way. One of the best ways to do that is selfcare. You may be wondering, what even is self-care? Self-care is t he practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. For example, you should do things that you like. They don’t necessarily have to be productive but as long as they make you happy. Especially if you have had a stressful day this will help you relax. I know you have heard this before but make sure you drink water. In fact, this will have a major impact on your overall mood. In addition, Eat well make sure you have three meals a day and try and have a balanced diet. These things may seem simple but they will make you feel different. I know first hand what goes on in the middle school environment and it’s not always good. There are always going to be mean girls and boys everywhere you go so instead of letting those petty little things get to you learn to just either ignore it or deal with it. When you don’t know someone that well you shouldn’t let the things they do bother you because they don’t matter. When practicing self-care make sure you surround yourself with amazing people because peer support really helps. Also, try to support other people even if they are not necessarily your friend.

Counselor’s Corner Relax, Relent, and Restore: Golden Rule of Self-Care

Often times, during my tenure as a therapist, I have witnessed client after client and student after student adamantly state, “I’m supposed to be the strong one in my family”, “I should not be tired or have feelings or thoughts of fatigue”, and even “I should know what to do in any life situation”. However, reality would relent that life-changing events or even day-to-day stressors can cause strong emotional reactions and a sense of uncertainty making it difficult to cope and prioritize self care. To neglect these emotional reactions or to refuse to acknowledge these daily, layering stressors only serve to invalidate one’s existence and can lead to toppling mental health issues. Emotional pain and mental fatigue are natural responses. Being strong or resilient does not equal an absence of pain, stress, or fatigue. Hey we believe that we are supposed to be like robots rarely attending to our own needs to relax, relent, and restore. Successful and “whole-hearted” people have perfected the art of self care and as a result live a life fairly free of drama or emotional distress. Developing a self care routine is a personal journey. One approach to building a person’s self care toolkit, may not work for everyone. The objective is to find your own approach and make it work for you. Consider the following strategies in developing your personal journey building your own self-care toolkit:

ST RICT LY T WEENS

1. Make connections with family members or those who care about you, by accepting help, feedback, and support. Remember we all face some sort of distress in our life that warrants added support. The key is to finding your way to the other side, which I’ve heard is somewhat greener. 2. Join community groups to build deep connections. 3. Reclaim personal time and time management: free yourself from distractions so you can focus on you. 4. Reduce stress through healthy eating habit and physical activity. Treat yourself to something healthy and enjoyable. 5. Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques (is breathing exercises or yoga). Meditation and spiritual practices provide an inner connection that influences awareness and establishes hope. 6. Avoid seeing a crisis situation as unconquerable. It is difficult to try and change or even prevent a stressful event from occuring, but you can change your interpretations and responses to that event. 7. Accept that change is inevitable. Certain situations last longer than others but change will always present itself. 8. Move toward realistically established goals. Many times people will become stagnate and complain about not achieving a goal. Instead establish a plan of action in order to accomplish the goals set. 9. Remember that regression, at times, is part of the process. 10. Keep looking forward. Provide rewards for yourself when you notice growth in any one area of your life. 11. Avoid blowing stressful situations out of proportion. 12. Pay special attention to your needs and feelings. Use some of these practical self-care activities daily: keep a journal of thoughts and feelings about significant life events. This helps to process what has happened and serve as record of how you were able to cope. There is always a reason to pause and relax, relent and restore. Pay close attention to your body and your thoughts so you can stay in tune with what you are in need of from day to day.

THE KNOW HOW

Chance Gardens Centralia, Missouri

Chance gardens is a nice, cool place with all sorts of flowers and really cool fish. They have a well. and it is from the original Chance Gardens. There is a waterfall there and there is also a cave that has stone in it. There is also a really cool pergola, an archway in a garden or park consisting of a framework covered with trained climbing or trailing plants. It has really old wood that’s been there for along time. There is also a concrete thing that has a quote from Chance and it says, “ I am … Just one who enjoys and appreciates the geological wonders of our grand old state of missouri and gains pleasure and happiness in their display - in the assembly of our garden, that the ones passing this way may stop, rest, reflect and enjoy.” - letter to a friend, 1948. I asked Jim Lee, the person who maintains the gardens, a couple of questions. “How long have you been working at Chance Gardens?” “In February I will have been here for 30 years” “Are there any specific things that you enjoy about Chance Gardens?” “Well, my training was in horticulture. It's nice to be able to use your education in your work, but I really do enjoy all the work. Every day is a bit different. The Chance family still owns the Garden and they're really good to work for. They give me a lot of freedom to try different things and their not always looking over my shoulder. You don't stay somewhere for 30 years and not enjoy what you're doing.” The Museum is open for public tours from May through November. The tour hours are from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays. A quote from me, “Chance gardens is a place I go almost daily to enjoy the flowers and to watch the fish. This is one place I love to visit”.

THE KNOW HOW

Heal t h & W e ll n e s s Take time for yourself! It's Important! Life can be very stressful, busy, and sometimes hard. You are not alone if you feel this way. No matter where you are or how old you are, there are things that make you worried or overwhelmed. It is a natural response from your brain that comes from sensing danger,so your brain is getting your body ready to fight or run for protection. Unfortunately, this does not change as you get older. This is why it is so important to take time for yourself. If you learn strategies about how to deal with busy, stressful times now, you can use these strategies for the rest of your life. There is no right way to take care of yourself or recharge. It can look very different for everybody. The important thing is that the activity is something you enjoy. In general, you can consider these categories, but like I said, there are many others. Exercise: Whether it be running, biking, skating, swimming, or dancing, this is a proven way to relieve stress. When we exercise and get our heart rates up, the body releases chemicals, or neurotransmitters, which signal your brain to do the opposite of what your body does when you are stressed. It also makes us feel strong and confident which is very important! Art: Painting, music, singing, photography. Sometimes being still and losing yourself in beauty is a good way to reset your brain and gain perspective on what you are going through. Science has shown that music tells your brain to release those same chemicals that make you feel happy and tell your excited body systems to slow down and relax.

THE KNOW HOW Meditation: This word may make you picture a certain image when you hear it, but meditation can look different every time you do it. It simply means to be still and reflect or think about something. Some people find it helpful to recite a phrase to help calm themselves and clear thoughts from their mind. Others will focus on breathing in and out. And still others will use body movement through yoga or tai chi to help clear thoughts and center themselves. These are just a very few examples of ways to help take care of yourself and reset your mind. You may have heard of this new buzz word “ Mindfulness” which is sweeping the country. It means to live with intention, listen to your body, and take time to recognize what emotions you may be feeling. It is taking the time to think if these emotions are good or ones that you don’t like. The next time you feel off, ask yourself, “What am I feeling?,” and decide if it is good or otherwise. If it is stress, try some of these methods and afterward ask yourself the same question. Hopefully you will have a different answer. Be patient with yourself. Self care is a skill you continue to develop throughout your entire life. But if you start now, you will be masters by the time you reach adulthood and will be ready to face the new challenges that come with age.
