Letter from the Editor Forgiveness… such an easy word to say but such a hard thing to do. I used to think that I had to forgive people because it was the right thing to do. You know just turn the other cheek and forgive and forget. The person may have said they were sorry, or maybe that it was stupid that you got so mad. We all know these people, but to you, it still really hurts. Your mind keeps playing the situation over and over again, and you let it stew in you. Whether or not they say they are sorry or not you have to forgive them, not for them, but for you! Because you MATTER! You can’t hold that anger inside you; it will destroy you, believe me I know! A wise person once told me you have to forgive them, but you don’t have to continue to be their friend or go around them. Sometimes though that can be really hard if it is family, but there are ways to be around them superficially. Also, make sure you forgive yourself, sometimes we forget we need to do that too. Happy New Year and I hope this year is amazing for each and every one of you!

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Hi, this is Theo. He is 13 years old and is in eighth grade and is currently playing basketball at Jefferson Middle School. He has loved playing sports since he started playing basketball when he was three years old. Theo has played a lot of sports like basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and golf. He spends hours and hours shooting hoops, golfing and throwing a ball. When he is not playing a sport, you won’t find him reading, but you will find him fishing or playing Xbox. When asked, Theo said his favorite thing about playing sports is the friendships he has made with his teammates, and he has learned good sportsmanship and teamwork. When Theo was born he was four weeks premature, so he was little. Not anymore! He is 6’2” tall and has a size 13 shoe! Sometimes Theo can be shy and a little timid until he gets comfortable and then he is really funny. When he goes to Rock Bridge High School next year, he hopes to continue to play multiple sports. He won’t say which is his favorite sport yet. After high school, he plans to go to college and hopes to get the chance to continue to play sports. For his career, he plans to be an athletic trainer.

Reasons I Like Hockey... I started playing hockey when I was almost four years old. I have been playing for Pat and Jason every year since I was 6. I like hockey because of the people I play with. I also like being able to check, score goals, and get assists. My least favorite part was learning how to skate; it was really difficult. I play for the Mid Missouri Tigers, and I am in bantam age group. I have a small team this year; I only have 14 kids on my team. My team won the state championship last year against Kirkwood. We got the Blue Note Cup, and everyone got to take it home for a week. I ate cereal out of it. This year my team has to learn how to check, and it’s a little bit of a challenge. It’s not what I expected; it’s a bit less scary. I didn’t get hit much in my last game, and it didn’t hurt that bad. My favorite NHL team is the STL Blues because they are the closest NHL team from my house. I am a left wing and sometimes center. I like to be left wing better because I get to pass more pucks to my teammates. Usually, during practice, we do some basic drills like the warm-up before a game, and we sometimes do mountains, or we skate around all of the circles in the ice arena a few times. We also do something called the 1 3 1 trap. The 1 3 1 trap is where there are three defenders in their zone, and one offensive player is trying to get the puck, while the defenders have to try and get it out of the zone. There are three offensive players in the neutral zone trying not to let the defenders through. One defender stays in the back just in case the defender on the other side of the ice makes it through the offense man in the neutral zone.

FEAT URED I play at Washington Ice Arena every Friday and Wednesday for an hour. I am almost twelve years old, and also the youngest player on my hockey team. I have played with most of the guys I play with now my entire life that I have been playing hockey. Hockey is my favorite sport because you can check people, and score goals, and hang out with your friends, and get assists. I travel to STL a lot to play games because we are the only team outside of STL except for Springfield and Kansas City. I play around 19 games each year, not counting playoffs or tournaments. My team and I have won 2 championships, but have been to 4 championship games overall. Hockey helps keep me in shape, and it also helps me think ahead and strategically. It is a very fastpaced game with about six players on the ice. Each team has a Goalie, two defensemen, and three offensen. These are the reasons I like hockey.

Mee t e n o m m Si My name is Simmone, and I love playing sports even though I might not always be good at them. I play volleyball and soccer. They are both a lot of fun to play and are keeping me in shape and active. When its off-season I participate in a local recreational sports club, we have practice and a game each week. They are always helping me improve my skills. Some other things about me are I like to be goofy and silly. I am always making my family laugh at my cheesy puns and jokes. I guess I get that from my dad since he is always cracking jokes on my mom. I also love being scared or surprised because my reactions are so weird and funny I end up laughing at myself.

FEAT URED

If you know me, you know I love movies, especially cheesy ones. In the middle of the movie, you can find me mouthing every word because that’s how many times I have watched that movie. One of my favorite Christmas movies is Home Alone 3 because I think it’s every kid’s dream to do what Alex did, which was create all those traps and capture the bad guys. My sister thinks it’s funny how I like to watch Christmas movies during the middle of summer, which I guess is kind of weird but hey, if it’s a good movie, I am going to watch it no matter what time of the year it is. Another crazy thing about me is I love math and history. I like to watch World War 2 documentaries with my dad or Discovery Channel with my grandpa since I am not really a reader. Some people call me weird, but I just think it’s fun. I love to bake too although I am not Martha Stewart, I try my best. I like to bake cupcakes, chocolate candies, cookies, and I also tend to cook dinner for the girls I babysit. So I guess I got some good practice at cooking. That’s pretty much all there is to me, I am someone who loves food, loves school, and loves life.

SMART

Students and Mentors Achieving Responsibility Together

What is SMART? Smart stands for Students and Mentors Achieving Responsibility Together. We have been a group for three years now. We used to stay after school four days a week until 5:00, but our funding got cut, so now we only have SMART two days a week. We start our day after school with a snack break, and then we play a team building game. Next, we have homework time with teacher help if we need it, or you can do it on your own. Then, we go to our clubs and do fun activities.

Activities & Leadeship SMART has had many clubs in the past couple years, including Cooking, Cheer & Dance, STEM, iPads, Drama, Science Experiments, and many others. Our current clubs are Juggling/Magic Tricks, Arts and Crafts, and Service Learning/BoldlyU. In Juggling and Magic, students learn how to juggle with different objects and do amazing tricks with cards and other items. In Arts and Crafts, the kids do festive crafts including decorative pumpkins and Veteran’s Day projects. In BoldlyU/Service Learning students write articles/jokes and draw pictures. We also organize things for our SMART Shop where students can buy clothing, hygiene products, and school supplies with their SMART money. SMART has had many volunteers in the past. Kascey and Stephen have been with us since the beginning. Kascey graduated and was given a scholarship to MACC. Stephen is still with us and will graduate this year. We are lucky to have high school students from Champion Academy, Future Teachers of America and National Honor Society. Mrs. Matthieson is our lead teacher. SMART was her idea. Mrs. Matthiesen has done a lot for SMART. If not for her, we wouldn’t have this chance. 28

Volunteering SMART students volunteered for many events including Shop Hop, McTeacher Night, BBQ Cook-off, and Adopt a Soldier. At Shop Hop, we helped babysit kids so their parents could go around town to all the booths and stores. We gave the kids time to play while the parents had quality time for themselves. When the kids won games, they would win prizes. At the BBQ Cook-Off, we helped the kids make Halloween crafts. We had a giant bubble maker so when the kids went to the bubble station they got to make as big a bubble as they wanted. They had a lot of fun! For the last, but not least, we have partnered with the Army for the third year in a row. We made puppy chow to sell at a football game, and we also made and sold a variety of Christmas ornaments, stocking stuffers, and candy for our Adopt our Troops Program. This money was used to make gift baskets for the Going Away Ceremony for troops being deployed to Germany and Christmas gifts for their children. We also wrote letters and made cards to include in a care package to send to the troops overseas. This summer we made signs and carnival games for the Army Family Day. We set up booths and worked with children for six hours. Everyone had an amazing time!

ON THE COVER: OLIVIA

Hi, my name is Olivia. I live with my mom, dad, and brother in Indiana. I have lived here my entire life. I am 13 years old and in the 7th grade. My brother, Solomon is 14 and in the 8th grade. My brother and I were both adopted when we were just a few days old. I don’t know all the details about my birth parents, but I do know that God has a plan for my life, and I’m glad that he chose this family for me. One of my favorite things to do is to play sports. I play basketball and run track. In Track, I am a sprinter. I run the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. My position in basketball is usually point guard. If I had to choose a favorite sport, it would be basketball. I’m not very tall for a basketball player. I am 4ft 11 3⁄4 inches. I really have to use my speed to make up for being short. I have been playing basketball since I was four years old. When I started, I thought it was easy. I didn’t think it would get much harder, but I was wrong. The competition keeps getting tougher, and girls keep getting taller. When I play basketball, it brings out a whole new me. It takes my mind off of other things that are going on in my life like schoolwork and school drama. When I’m at home, one of my favorite things to do is to create. By that I mean, creating videos and art. It allows me to express myself in ways that are sometimes harder to do in words or in front of people. I will end with my favorite Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11. Because even though I do not know what is going to happen in the future, I do know that God wants the best for me. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Robot ics I think robotics is fun because lots of my friends are in robotics. Also, the robotics activities are fun and take work to come up with a skit or project that the FLL lego robotics group assigns you for the season. In the robot room at school, you get to build the robot and the attachments for the robot. You also get to program the robot to run on the board and earn points for your team. You have to research your project to find how you can help or solve a problem. First, in robotics, you must use and know the core values- these are rules that keep everyone nice and friendly instead of mean to each other at the competitions. The competition is about having fun doing your best to get to the next competition. There are judges that watch you do your skit and judge how your robot runs and how you answer questions that they ask about the robot. You run the robot in front of your parents and other parents too. Also, there is a core values room that they ask you to do a challenge and then ask you about the core values. At the end of the competition, they give out awards and talk about how the different teams did. And everyone goes on stage and has a dance party. LEARN CORE VALUES, HAVE FUN AND DO YOUR BEST!

FEAT URED Robotics is a fun experience. It is open to grades 4th, 5th, and 6th. This is my last year of robotics. I had a fun year. Robotics is a chance to learn about coding and programming. One big thing that you can learn in robotics is gracious professionalism. Gracious professionalism means being kind and polite to others. This is a big deal at competitions. In 2013, a kid cussed, and his whole team was disqualified. Judges will come to your table and you won’t even know they are judges because they dress normally. They could be parents, you never know. The robot is fairly simple to program. It runs on two wheels and a caster on the back. A caster is a metal ball that creates a frictionless surface so the robot can turn easier. There are four sensors and two motors. The sensors are a color sensor, giro sensor, ultra-sonic sensor and the infra-red sensor. The motors are medium and large. I will not explain all of them, but they all improve your robot’s abilities. HAVE A FUN EXPERIENCE AND LEARN GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM!

FEAT URED

How Robotics Changed My Life... I knew joining robotics was something I wanted to do. I’m really into math, and my brother participated in it the first year the program began in our school. Getting to participate in robotics has changed my life because I have learned to work as part of a team, it has helped me fit in, and it has challenged me. Robotics has changed me socially because I now work better within a team and I feel like I fit in. I’ve always been independent and like doing things on my own. As I have gotten older, I have found out that it can be a problem. I needed to do something about it. When the robotics season first started, they threw me right into team building with people I did not even know. They gave me challenges that I had to complete as a team. This has helped me not be so selfish. Robotics has also helped me to fit in. I am into nerdy things, and people do not always think that is the coolest thing. But at robotics I started to feel like I fit in and that there are people just like me. I am not as embarrassed about it as much as I used to be. Robotics also challenges me. School is pretty easy for me, but at robotics, we have complex math equations that tell our robot what to do. We also have to use Legos to build attachments that solve complex tasks on the challenge board. It is really nice when it works. Robotics also pushes me not to give up. As we prepare for competition, we constantly have to test and change programs and attachments. Sometimes things don’t go as planned. Last year the competition board had lower walls, so the ultrasonic sensors didn’t work correctly on our robot. This year one of our teammates dropped the robot after the practice run. We had to rebuild the robot, but our sensors were broken. Robotics has taught me not to give up and keep trying. I am excited to have advanced to the statewide competition two years in a row. However, winning isn’t the most important part of robotics. One of the core values of FLL Robotics is “what we learn is more important than what we win.” I have learned a lot from robotics. Robotics has helped me to grow socially and has helped me to face challenges. If you would like to find more about robotics visit: https://www.fllcasts.com/. Be Brave, Be Bold, Be You!

Forgiveness St ruggles Forgiveness is hard, especially with your family. I had to forgive my mom this summer, and it was hard. It was more than her saying I couldn’t leave the house or taking my things; she hurt me and everyone in my family worse then I could have imagined before it happened. So what happened was, my mom was going to leave us. I was the only one who didn’t talk to anyone about it; I just cried for a while. But my dad never gave up. He was fighting for her and still is. But it was hard. I had never forgiven someone for hurting me that much. It took awhile to forgive her, but I did, maybe not to her face. But she knows that I did in my heart. To me, it felt like she was taking my heart and ripping it apart because she is my mother and my hero. I imagined it like this; a superhero (like Superman) was saving people from a burning building, but she didn’t hear me screaming so I got left in the burning building, alone, scared, and watching everything around me burn to the ground. That’s why it’s important to forgive people, so you can be saved from the burning building and make new, happy memories with those people. The saying “forgive and forget” doesn’t have to be true, you don’t have to forget what happened, but forgiving is what changes everything. Being able to forgive someone who hurt you and move on is really strong. It shows that you aren’t heartless and you are strong enough to face what happened and say “I can forgive because I want to be happy.” So that’s why I think being able to forgive is important, because I want to be able to spend time with my mom and laugh and cry and share things together, and not grieve about that one time she might have left us. So maybe you might have someone who hurt you, and you haven’t forgiven them, just consider it. It will change you and your future with that person if you do.

I told him I was sorry for what I said, but he just shrugged and didn’t say anything back. It really hurt my feelings, and now I don’t even know if I’m sorry anymore. I know I’m supposed to be nice and forgive my friends, but honestly, why should I? -Past You -Past You

DEAR PAST ME

You should be proud of yourself for taking the first step and apologizing for what you said. Even if he didn’t appreciate it at the time, it shows you care about him and that you’re a good friend. There have been times in your past you probably also found it difficult to say you’re sorry. Maybe you thought you did nothing wrong, that is was just a joke, or that it was small and unimportant. I would suggest talking with your friend and listening to his side of the story. In the heat of the fight, everyone tends to say things they don’t mean. So what were his true intentions? Most of the time, communication is all that’s needed to make amends. If this doesn’t go as you would have liked, it is still important to forgive those who have hurt you. You don’t forgive someone for their benefit; you do it for you. Forgiveness is not about forgetting everything and then repeating the cycle. Forgiveness means that you are uninterested in staying angry. It means releasing negative energy, because no one deserves to stew in negativity. So when you’re mad at your friend and he isn’t sorry, think of forgiveness as a solution to your pain and a step in the direction of healing. Maybe he will see your happiness and soak up the good vibes. -Future You

OVERCOMIN G ST RUGLES WITH FORGIVE NESS “Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work, so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.” James 1:2

This verse that has served my heart well these past few months of my senior year. We’ve all experienced ‘friend-drama,’ but I felt truly alone when two close friendships of mine began to crumble. At first, I couldn’t stop blaming myself: “You shouldn’t have opened your big mouth, Emma.” I had addressed that I was feeling excluded from what was a three-way friendship. It hurt when the two friends reacted poorly, and I found myself wishing that I had never said anything. However, I was also infuriated that these so-called friends chose to abandon me. I was at a loss; how could God let this happen? However, it wasn’t a coincidence when I stumbled across my favorite verse during a devotion. I did not understand God’s message at first; if this situation was a gift, He had some explaining to do. I wanted this all to end, so when my parents suggested I try to talk to these friends again, I refused. My heart was hardened and unforgiving; life was getting uncomfortable, and I didn’t want any part of it. However, I think we can remember this isn’t how God works. Challenges can be uncomfortable, but they help our faith grow and become stronger. Talking with God and the people who truly care about me, like my parents and counselor, encouraged me that this circumstance was temporary. God used this frustrating and upsetting situation for my betterment.

ST RICT LY T WEENS While it may have taken a while to realize it, I knew that forgiveness was the only way I could move past this depressing time. After praying for some time, I confidently reached out to the two friends and offered to talk and listen. Unfortunately, they refused to do the same; they were not interested in resolving the heartbreaking conflict. I was conflicted and angry; God was pointing me to forgiveness, so why didn’t they want to come together? The advice I received from my counselor pointed out an interesting answer; she helped me realize that forgiveness and reconciliation were two separate concepts. I knew that these two friends had hurt me, and my trust in them was impaired. However, my heart could heal if I chose to forgive them. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to reconcile with a certain person; this taught me that forgiveness means treating them the way Christ would and letting it all go into His hands. God forgave us though we were not worthy of it, and after these past few months, I realized that being Christ-like meant forgiving those that may not necessarily deserve it. I have forgiven the two friends, and I have begun surrounding myself with more and more people who strengthen my relationship with God and friends who have the love and forgiveness of Christ in their hearts. God drew me closer to Him by using a situation that I thought was uncomfortable. It improved my faith-life and brought me to the realization that forgiveness is freeing! By handing over my circumstance to God, He used it to teach me how His heart looks and acts. Forgiveness is difficult, but “consider it a sheer gift,” for God has a good plan for you.

Counselor’s Corner It is completely understandable, that when you have been wronged by someone, forgiving them is not the first thing that comes to mind. I don’t want to forgive them. I don’t want them to think I let them win. That’s a common thought and one that may be your truth. At some point, however, taking some time to think about what has happened, how you were impacted, and what will make you feel free, must occur. For youth, it may be somewhat challenging to understand forgiveness and to forgive. Why? Awesome question. You may be blaming a friend, a teacher, or a parent for something they have done. You may have experienced feelings in which you were hurt, belittled, embarrassed, cheated on, laughed at, lied on, etc. The act may have caused you to have feelings of anger, rage, sadness, or frustration. Youth often want to be liked and accepted, and not forgiving someone could cause you to lose friends, have a difficult time communicating with your parents or caregivers, and overall feel lost and confused. How can you work towards this freeing act of forgiveness? Well, it may prove to be a bit more difficult in real life to do. That is okay. Remember, take one step at a time, and know that the process will take time. Here are four tips to help you in the process of forgiveness:

#1:

Decide to let it go:

This is the first step in freeing yourself from the act that has hurt you. Remember everyone makes mistakes, including you, so deciding to let it go sets you in motion towards forgiveness. Remember the lyrics to “Let it go,” from the movie Frozen? Give no more thought to what people will say. This process of forgiveness is about you becoming free.

ST RICT LY T WEENS

#2: Share your feelings of anger, rage, sadness, or frus t rat ion:

This step will allow you to identify your feelings with what has hurt you. When you can identify those feelings, you are better able to know what next step(s) you will need to take to begin to resolve those unwanted feelings. Remember, this is a process, so be kind to yourself.

#3: Be mindful of t he present:

Focusing on the present allows you to see the good in your life versus the not so good things that may have caused you some distress. When you are present, you are saying, “I am here, I am present, I am safe, I am aware of the goodness at this moment, and I am thankful. This step allows you to shift your focus from the act which hurt you, and focus on the good that is present in your life.

#4: Forgive:

This step will allow YOU peace of mind. When you have peace of mind, you are giving your mental health a boost. Why? Because you are no longer giving thought or power to the situation that caused you distress. You have forgiven, and are moving forward in a positive direction. Congratulations! These four tips are not easy, however, when you work them accordingly, you will notice a change within you, that will make you feel better. Take a moment to think about a time when you were forgiven. How did it make you feel? Remember, to forgive is a choice. Choose to forgive and allow yourself to be free!

THE KNOW HOW

Parent’s Corner The definition of forgiveness is a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed you, regardless of whether they deserve forgiveness. It does not mean forgetting, nor does it mean condoning or excusing offenses. Let’s be real here, it’s easier said than done. When my kids were younger, it was easier to forgive them because they were learning, testing the waters, etc. As they hit their later teenage years, forgiveness is a little harder to come by. I still forgive them, but there are some residual effects of that. I don’t forget as easily as I did, which translates to it being harder to forgive if you keep doing the same thing and then the trust begins to erode. Forgiveness can take time and for some individuals given the family dynamic and/or the reason that needs forgiveness; it may never come, it may come but at a price or in the best case, it comes, and everyone is okay. It looks different to everyone. Parents we have unconditional love for our children. They also have a memory vault, so they never truly forget. Use our family saying, “acknowledge and move on.” If we keep bring “it” up, then we have never really released the feelings of resentment and never provide forgiveness. Life is too short and the time with your kids is precious, and we should not be bound with resentment. Our kids are learning from us on how to forgive, provide them with the example.

THE KNOW HOW

1. If you want the perfect eyeliner wing to match your outfit, place a piece of tape where you want the eyeliner wing to go and use it as a guide. 2. If you are a lipstick person and lipstick gets on your favorite outfit a great way to get it out of your clothes is to use hairspray. Spray the hairspray on the spot, use a towel to rub it until it comes off. 3. If your coat zipper gets stuck...no worries, just add Vaseline or chapstick on it and tug it up and down until it comes loose. 4. If you have a flannel shirt that is wrinkled, you can get those wrinkles out by using a flat iron. Move it up and down quickly so not to burn the shirt. 5. If you want to prevent rips in your tights then run them under water, squeeze the water out gently, put them in a plastic bag and freeze them overnight. Take them out and let them thaw at room temperature before you wear them. 6. If you want your shoes to be white again use a toothbrush and baking soda. Brush the baking soda on the shoe, and they will be white again.

Tourette Syndrome: Tourette syndrome (TS or simply Tourette's) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder with onset in childhood, characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic. Hi, my name is Callie. I am 11 years old and I have the greatest friends and family. I love sports! I like football and basketball, and I do Taekwondo. I also love math. My best friend is one of the greatest friends I have ever had. He is always there for me, and I can tell him anything. I also have an awesome mom! She is the best! I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder two years ago. Then I was also diagnosed with Tourette syndrome this past year. Tourette syndrome is one type of tic disorder. It makes you do certain vocal sounds and movements, such as twitching, blinking, jerking, clearing your throat, sniffing, squeaking, and many more. People that have it can’t help it. When people don’t know that I have this, they laugh, make faces, look and stare at me. It doesn’t make me feel very good, but I am used to it now. I have lots of great friends and family that help me get through my hard times. What my mom always tells me is:

Gar ret t, 15 BoldlyU is a great magazine that has given me multiple opportunities. It has given other people an opportunity to see who I am and what I love to do. It also has given me personally an opportunity to look back and read and see all the opportunities I have been given and all of the accomplishments I have achieved. This magazine has shown many people and myself how I am a role model and how many people look up to me also and how hard I work. It has reminded me that I always need to be aware of my actions because I never know who might be watching. It’s also given me the chance to show appreciation and recognize those who have influenced me in my life. BoldlyU has let me see who I really am.
