This past June, more than 60 world-class athletes from around the world descended on Boise to compete in the Road to X Games park qualifier at our newly re-constructed Rhodes Skate Park. Aired on ESPN and ABC, our city and its new world-class skate park were the back drop for a fantastic show by these unbelievably talented skateboarders and BMX cyclists. It was a great two days – an unprecedented opportunity to show an international audience how our parks and open spaces are part of who we are as a community. It was also a perfect example of the return we get from our investments in our parks. Just a handful of months before, we cut the ribbon on the refurbished Rhodes Skate Park. Originally constructed in the mid-1990s by Glenn Rhodes and scores of community and city volunteers, the park, while still popular, had not aged well. But through the dogged determination of the Boise Skateboard Association and a generous $1.25 million gift from the Albertsons Family Foundation and an additional $300,000 investment from the City of Boise, Rhodes Park was reborn. Almost instantly, what have been a lackluster skate park under an overpass on the Connector instantly became known in skateboard circles as one of the top skate parks in the world – so good, in fact, it drew the attention of the X Games. In addition, the park is home to one of the few formal parkour parks around and it is a center for some outstanding public art, which is worth a visit to the area in and of itself. In all, four art pieces give the area a distinct interest and identity that will only grow with time. The summer’s events helped mark Boise and its parks as a truly unique place to live and play – fall colors make those characteristics even more rich. Through our Parks and Recreation programming, Boise defines its values, lifestyle and livability. I hope that you and your family take full advantage – and that you love every minute of it.
