LEARNING (18+) FAMILY CAMPING BASICS

ORGANIC GARDENING

TREE BIOLOGY

4+& ADULT Gain skills and confidence to take the whole family overnight camping this summer. Topics and activities will be tailored so that all ages can participate. Learn the gear, meals and etiquette that will keep you safe, comfy and enjoying the outdoors. Cost is per person.

Get ready for the upcoming growing season with Boise Urban Garden School’s (BUGS) Organic Gardening Class. You’ll learn the basics of organic gardening. Topics will include garden planning, plant selection and care, water, and weed and pest management.

Get the dirt on soil and plant interactions. Learn the basics of caring for the soil as well as basic plant structures. You’ll walk away with a growing understanding on how to manage soil and proper tree care for healthier, longer living trees.

FRUIT TREE PRUNING

ROSES

TREE PRUNING

Knowing how and when to prune for fruit is much different than pruning an ornamental tree. If you have a fruit tree, this is the class for you!

Caring for roses is a year ‘round job. Class will cover pruning techniques and how to treat some of the most common pests in roses, including Bacterial Cane Blight.

This class addresses more than just cutting off branches. Incorrect pruning can cause serious problems for your trees. Learn the correct way to make a pruning cut, the tree’s response to the cuts and how to prune for the long-term health and beauty of your trees.

LAURA MOORE CUNNINGHAM CITY ARBORETUM TOUR Come tour the nursery and see where the city grows its trees. We will look at basic nursery production, discuss species identification and learn about characteristics of small trees. We’ll walk to Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park and look at mature specimens. We will walk on uneven surfaces which may be dusty or muddy depending on the spring weather. Please wear appropriate footwear. The class is free but registration is required.

TREASURES OF THE BOISE FRONT – Wildflowers and More Did you know that the Boise Front is special for its diversity of rare, unusual and even recently discovered wildflowers? We will go on a photographic journey to explore the floristic treasures of the Boise Front, from Bonneville Point to Mores Mountain to Spring Valley, growing in a diversity of unique habitats.

TREE PROBLEMS Learn about insects and diseases that affect our trees and the most common problems people create by incorrect cultural practices. Learn to identify the problems and get suggestions on how to correct them.

TREE SELECTION & PLANTING Planting incorrectly is one of the most common reasons for tree failure. Unfortunately, sometimes the problem isn’t evident for 10 or more years. Once you’ve chosen the perfect tree for your area, learn the correct way to plant (or what to look for when someone else plants) to ensure the tree’s long-term success.

XERISCAPING AND NATIVE PLANTS TALK Learn how to reduce water consumption while keeping your yard beautiful by using the best plants, irrigation components and other landscape elements. This is a great class if you are interested in practical and applicable solutions for your yard!

PICKLEBALL LADDER LEAGUES AGES 16+ Ladder leagues are organized leagues in which players with similar skills compete against each other in a competitive, structured weekly format. Think of a pickleball “ladder” as a graphical representation of a player’s ranking (by skill and performance) over a period of time. The rungs on the ladder represent a player’s current position (ranking) on the ladder relative to the other players. The top rung of the ladder will be the individual

currently ranked the highest (the best winning percentage) and the bottom rung will be the lowest-ranked individual or team. The ultimate goal is to climb the ladder to the highest rung. A complete description is online.

TAI CHI & QIGONG – Beginner

ADAPTIVE RECREATION

PROGRAMS & SERVICES Boise Parks and Recreation’s AdVenture Program provides a wide range of programs for youth and adults with disabilities. We also offer inclusion services in which modifications may be provided so that an individual with a disability can fully participate in Boise Parks and Recreation’s programs. Services such as sign language interpreters, additional staff, adaptive equipment, etc. may be provided with a minimum of three or more weeks advanced notice of the program start date with no cost to the participant. To inquire about inclusion services, please contact Emily Kovarik at 208-608-7687 (TTY: 1-800-377-3529) or ekovarik@cityofboise. org. Reasonable modifications are based on individuals’ needs and abilities. PARTICIPANT PERSONAL NEEDS The adaptive recreation staff and volunteers provide leadership for the program but are unable to provide assistance with self-care needs (feeding, toileting assistance, etc.). Care providers should accompany participants who need personal care. Participants who have behavioral issues may be asked to participate with an aide in attendance. Please let us know upon registration if you will be bringing your own aide as fees for aides may be waived or may vary depending on the activity. Participants should enjoy meeting new people, be able to function in a group setting and need to be able to adjust to new routines and environments. Please call 208-608-7680 to learn more.

THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES, HOWEVER, EVERYONE IS WELCOME.

AGES Many of our programs welcome people under the specified age range. However, an adult may need to sign up with them. Please call 208-6087680 to learn more. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Boise Parks and Recreation offers financial scholarships to qualified youth, seniors and adults with disabilities. To find out if you qualify to receive a scholarship, which will help pay for a class or activity, apply in advance at Fort Boise Community Center or cityofboise.org/scholarships. AGES 18+ Experience the beauty of snowcovered hills and fresh mountain air on a snowshoe trip near Idaho City. We will wear special snowshoes that prevent us from sinking in the snow during our approximately one-hour hike over mostly flat terrain. People of all fitness levels are welcome; we tailor the hike to the group. After snowshoeing, we will eat lunch in Idaho City and then soak in the beautiful hot springs. There is no lifeguard on duty at the hot springs so participants must know their swimming limits. The cost includes transportation from Fort Boise Community Center, snowshoes, lunch and hot springs entrance.

Refunds and transfers are not issued: • When cancellations or transfers are requested less than ten calendar days before the starting date of the class. • If the fee paid is less than the $15 processing fee. • For team fees after registration ends. • For all team sports player fees. WHO IS A RESIDENT?

Boise residents live within the city limits and pay Boise city taxes. The boundaries that the U.S. Post Office uses and those that determine the city limits are not the same. Even though you may have a Boise mailing address, you may not live within the Boise City limits. Questions about residency? Please call customer service staff at 208-608-7680 or 208-608-7600.

NON-RESIDENT POLICY

Boise residents directly contribute to the operations of Boise Parks and Recreation Department’s programs and services by payment of their property taxes. The Fair-Share Policy (Non-resident Fee) allocates an additional fee to non-resident users so that they also contribute, on an equitable basis, to the overall financing of the department’s operations. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

• Partial scholarships are available for youth, seniors and adults with disabilities. Call 208-608-7680 for details or download an application form from cityofboise.org/ scholarships. • You can help ensure all young people in Boise have the same opportunity to participate by adding $1, $5, $10 or more to your registration payment. Donations are tax deductible. ACCOMMODATION
