When Michael first mentioned this idea to me, it was clear that he and Rhea had already put a ton of thought into it, as they always do with anything, and it has sure given them a gleam in their eyes with each conversation as the idea developed. We all know this business is even more about the people than it is about the cattle, and the Wheeler family epitomizes that more than anyonefamily values, hearts of gold, always there to help out, supportive of the breed and larger community - they are simply good folks. Then you look at the other families they have surrounded themselves with for this event and you have to think WOW what a collection of breeders. Welcome to our 25th Anniversary Celebration! It feels a bit surreal to look back to 1998 when we registered our first Angus cattle and to see how far we have come, while on the other hand looking forward to how much more we want to accomplish. Even after 25 years we often still feel like the “new kids”. The concept of this sale has been something that we have been thinking about for a few years now, and when we started discussing the concept with some our friends this spring it was met with so much enthusiasm that has continued to build all year long. I must thank and congratulate our consignors for getting behind this event and putting their trust in me to help them market their programs. It is a great example of what can happen be achieved when good cattle and great people come together with a common purpose and vision in mind. We hope that you can join us in person as we have a special evening planned of hospitality, and with a great band after the sale it is sure to be a party you will not want to miss! Bring your entire family for a weekend of Christmas shopping in Saskatoon and take in two great sales with the Touch of Class the following day.

The offering itself represents the best that we could all put forward in every segment. The cow families represented are the foundations of every herd and it is extra special for us to think that some of our foundation purchases could produce the foundation female for someone else’s new herd. The offering is very consitent in quality while at the same time offering enough variety in pedigrees, calving windows, and type that there is sure to be something to suit everyone. The pedigrees on the offering are mind blowing, and I can not think in recent memory of a sale offering that offered more exciting outcross pedigrees. There are many unique breeding pieces that will be fun to mate to try to produce that next outstanding herd bull or female.

We need to take this opportunity to thank all the people that have helped us get to this point. We have met so many great friends, mentors and customers on this journey that are truely what makes it all worth while. Most importantly I must thank my parents Harvey & Frances who have always allowed me to take a very active role in our purebred herd. Being a thirteen year old kid and getting to pick alot of the foundation lease cows is something I will never forget. They drug me across the country to shows and sales when there was always work that needed to be done at home. The years following BSE were not easy, and there were many times it seemed like it would have just been easier to pack it in. I hope that now you can look back and see that your sacrifices made a difference, and that you can be proud of what we have achieved together. One of the most important things you have taught me is how important it is to have a life partner that will support you through thick and thin, and I am forever thankful that I have Rhea by my side. Hopefully one of your grand-sons Ty, Tate or Rhett gets to write the welcome for our 50th celebration!

We all started somewhere...

In March 1913 Richard & Frances Wheeler registered the tile of their homestead in the RM of Blucher after immigrating from England in 1911. There they grew their farm and family including their oldest son Cyril Richard Wheeler. Cyril married Jennis May Hopkins and had five children, James, Margaret, Cecil, Harvey and Vera. In 1963 Cyril passed away unexpectedly and the family had to pull together to keep the farm going. In 1967 at the age of 15 Harvey quit school and has been on the farm ever since.

In 1976 Harvey married Frances Horn of Spiritwood, SK and they continued to live east of Saskatoon on the farm in the RM of Blucher. They had two children, Vincent born in 1979 and Michael born in 1984. With a relatively small land base they operated a mixed farm as many folks did at the time including grain, cattle, a coouple pigs and chickens, and shipped cream. It soon became evident that the land was better suited for cows than grain production and the focus changed to growing the herd of commercial cows.

The early days of the herd grew from retaining heifers from the milking Shorthorn cows, as well as some Hereford and mainly Charolais bulls. In 1989 Harvey took an AI course which allowed him to accelerate the genetic progress of the herd. At the time not many people would have been using AI on commercial cows.Many breeds were tried over the years including Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Simmental, Saler, South Devon and Texas Longhorn.

In order to continue to grow the herd more pasture was required, and it was often mused that the Wheeler cows saw more country than the people. Cattle were shipped all over including Leoville, Crystal Springs, Pleasantdale, Dundurn, and to the Handford’s at Tisdale, SK. Tom and Carol Handford custom grazed cattle and ran a purebred Red Angus operation. Harvey used semen from Handford’s on the Charolais and Simmental based commercial herd and the results were explosive. The hybred vigor was evident and the strength of the replacement heifers was undeniable.

In the fall of 1997 Tom Handford contacted Harvey about possibly leasing a group of Red Angus cows. Tom felt that we were already putting in the extra management required for purebreds by keeping production records on every cow, weaning weights, and using AI. A group of 20 females was selectedwith many half and three quarter sisters to the AI sires previously used being selected. The majority of the cows were descendants of Red XXX Avocet 544SI, Red Six Mile Becky 675T, and Red Six Mile Bridget 751T and sisters to Red Rambo Dylan 14Z, Red Handford Chief 47C and Red Handford None Better 260D. Looking back the ability to start with a group of closely bred females and cow families was instrumental in the development and consistency of the herd.

That same fall Michael purchased his first purebred 4-H heifer Red Cranston Hera 3G from the Angus Connection sale and Harvey and Frances purchased their first bred heifer Red Ruth Heather 632F. Michael also purchased a bred cow Red Little De Countess 249Y from the Crossmount Farms dispersal. All three cow families are still present in the herd today. They became member of the Canadian Angus Associaiton and registered their first calves in 1998.

Over the years more females were purchased to add new cow families from sales like Red Roundup and Angus Pride. One of Michael’s fondest memories was loading up in the old wood panel station wagon with Harvey to go to their first Red Roundup in 2000. It was their first trip together and they passed the hours driving talking about all the great cattle they saw on the way home. Michael was excited to purchase the embryos he had his eye on from Red PTTV Pride 3’97 that were consigned by Six Mile Red Angus. This fall Michael got to take his boys Tate and Rhett to the 50th Red Roundup for their first sale.

AI was used in the development of the purbred herd and as the herd grew herd sires were introduced which created more consistency in the cow herd. Some of the most influential bulls over the years were Red Handford None Better 260D from Handfords, Red Bar-E-L Paramount 13P and Red Bar-E-L Magic Mike 189Z from Longshore’s, Red Northline Atlantic City from Schneider’s, and Red Dimler Jack 25T from Double Bar D.

The commercial cow herd continued to grow and post BSE had grown to over 400 females. Today in order to match the availability of resources we have been breeding just over 200 purebred females. Our focus remains on our commercial roots and producing cattle that work in the real world. Some of the most important lessons we have learned over the past 25 years include:

1)Never under estimate the value of your own bulls or be afraid to use them.

2)The stregth of the momma cow is the most important selection criteria.

3)The shape of the skull can tell you alot about the rest of the animal and is the one thing that can’t be changed with feed or fitting.

4)It takes just as much to feed a poor one as a good one.

5)There are too many cows in the world to put up with wild cattle.

6)If you make too many excuses about why a cow should stay eventually you will start to believe them and it will cost you more in the long run. Your first loss is your best loss.

7)L ength means pounds and its pounds of weaned calf that pays the bills.

8)If you have fertility you can breed to improve other traits. Without fertility you have nothing.

9)We have a responsibility as seedstock producers to honestly represent our cattle and what they can do.

10)This is a people business and how we treat our customers is the most important thing.

In the early years bulls were sold privately off the farm, and some bulls were sold with Handford’s at the North East Bull Development Centre near Pathlow, SK. In March 2003 the desire to be able to market more bulls closer to home led to a partnership with the Schick and Wright famillies to establish The Complete Bull Sale. Over the years the partners changed to include the Ward and Fleury famillies with Wheeler’s hosting their own sale in 2016. In 2021 the bull sale was moved home for the first time to the farm. In 2023 the Wheeler family will be hosting their 20th annual bull sale on the farm. For the first time they are moving the sale later to Friday, March 24th.

The majority of replacement females have always been raised and not bought over the years. A few select females have been sold from time to time, but the majority have been put back into the breeding herd. If you study our pedigrees you will notice many generations of our prefix.

In 2007 Michael married Rhea Lancaster of Abbotsford, BC and they have three sons Ty, Tate and Rhett. They are the current and future operators of Wheeler’s Stock Farm. Each of the boys own their own cattle and have their own tattoo. We have always been a family operation, and everyone has an important role to play.

Come on Barbie! Let’s go party! Ginger Barbie is already a two time Agribition Supreme qualifier and all breeds Supreme Champion this summer. Ginger Barbie is making an impact on the show road and as a donor female. Her high quality phenotype and outcross pedigree puts her in an elite class to produce high quality seedstock. Her sire Lewis 3008B has proven to be a rare sire of cure bending progeny and daughters that sport fantastic udder quality. We have flushed three of his daughters and are utilizing several sons and grand-sons in our program. Ginger Barbie has been flushed once producing 31 number one embryos, and a very consistent group of sons and daughters have resulted from that flush. Watch for her sons to be features in our 2023 bull sale. The opportunity to purchase an elite donor female of this quality, in the prime of her production life are rare. When you partner with us we will do our best to open up our exclusive herd bull battery to you.

Barbie Family History

The Barbie family origniates from the purchase of Barbara of Peak Dot 541R (Barbie). Barbie turned out to be a special female when Michael spray painted “marry me” on her side to propose to Rhea that summer. Two crazy kids got engaged, quit their jobs and hit the show road that fall exhibiting cattle at Farmfair, Fall Fair and Agiribition back to back to back. Barbie was a division Champion at every show she attended that year, and we turned down several offers hoping to make her a foundation female. Her first red descendant Ginger Barbie would become our oldest son Ty’s first 4-H project.

Roja Barbie was Ginger Barbie’s first try at motherhood. The ability of Ginger Barbie to transmit her udder quality to her progeny is very apparent. The exceptional eye appeal and quality is also evident in this striking Genesis heifer calf. Genesis progeny have been in high demand topping many sales, and his semen is no longer available. This is an interesting choice, do you chose one of the elite heifer calves in the offering, or take the factory bred to the outcross powerhouse W Sunrise Executive 8J.

Dawn 101G is very typical of the type of females Reckoning is known for being sound footed, long spined and attractive fronted. She is an ET daughter of our past donor cow Dawn 17Y and full sister to Red Wheel Judge 22G who serves as a herdsire to B-Elle Red Angus. Dawn 17Y was one of the best cows we have produced and has produced many herd sires including Casanova 3B, Hawkeye 10G and Iron Man 4G. We felt Fort Knox worked so well on Dawn 101G we mated her back the same way. Dawn 105K is an absolute doll and would be suited to a young 4-H member. She has an awesome hair coat, a cool front end and the extra body and rib shape the Dawn cows are known for. The Dawn cow family originated from an Angus Pride purchase from the great people at Kenray Ranch. Harvey and Frances always enjoyed visiting with Ray and Donelda, Michael and Rhea have grown up knowing Sheldon and Ella, and its cool to see that Rhett and Oliver became fast friends at Showdown.

25 Years in the cattle business is indeed a milestone and definitely something to celebrate! We are excited to contribute a unique pair as well as frozen genetics that tie together a very special offering from the heart of our program.

The Princess cow family has established itself here as a cornerstone to our program. Through both daughters and sons JJL Princess 4W has proven time and time again her immense value through her progeny. Her offspring have graced many herds, building an elite reputation as sound footed, functional and practical cattle that work.

Red JJL Princess 51F is a cow that everyone finds when they tour and the kind we strive to produce. She is ridiculously easy keeping and sound from the ground up. Her sire, Red Flying K Max 110C has left us daughters that are absolutely unmatched in their phenotype and ability to bring in a solid calf each year. She is carrying service to our newest herd sire, the 20,000.00 Flying K Escalade 116J bull. Her daughter on offer, Red JJL Princess 21K is evidence of what this female will produce. She is feminine fronted but carries an extra bit of performance in her that the Red Lines MC Twister 25G bull has become known for here.

The flush of Red Box x Annie Oakley produced some very special females. Annie Oakley 32J or “Strawberries” as the boys named her is a powerhouse in terms of size, depth of rib, and still maintains an attractive look and clean front end. She could be tough to get around in the show ring and will be even more impressive in production. Annie Oakley 8B has been a phenotypic stand out and proven her ability to transmit that phenotype when mated to a variety of sires. Her true greatness is just being realised and we believe she will continue to become a househould name across the world. The early service to Typhoon will be extremely good, and there might not be a mating with more potential in the entire offering. Good luck chosing!

Annie Oakley 34J or “Waffles” has long been a favorite and as many visitors comment, the more you study her the more you like her. She is a moderate heifer that has all the natural muscle shape and rib you would expect from this mating. She also is a very pretty made heifer that is feminine and attractive in her skull shape. She could very well be one of the most efficient females when she enters production and I bet will only continue to look better and better as she matures. Again she is carrying an early service to Typhoon which is an exclusive mating. We will be more than happy to keep either “Strawberries” or “Waffles” for ourselves and are certain that whichever female is chosen will be a money maker for her new owners.

Anne Family History

The Anne family came to us in 2002 from Six Mile. The original Anne 920L produced until 14 years of age and left a strong legacy. One direct daughter of 920L sold to Blairs.Ag won the all breeds Cinderlla Classic. Now her great-grand daughter Annie Oakley 8B is one of our greatest breeding achievements, and is making her mark across North Amberica as one of the breeds great matrons. We initially sold a half interest in Annie Oakley to the master breeders Dave & Lynn Longshore of Bar-E-L Angus. They later turned a stellar return on investment to Combest Red Angus. We are grateful to have had several great partners on this female, with the most recent being Bud Thomas of Twin Willow Farms. The doors that one cow can open!

There is alot of history bred into this Pride female and we feel she offers the best of what we have been striving to produce. Stark has made a gorgous group of females that are powerful in terms of their muscle shape, fleshing ability and are developing very promising looking udders. Our Pride cow family are known for their ability to combine power and beauty, and we have only every parted with one member of this treasured family. We have been dabbling with mixing black and red genetics for a long time using VRD way back in 2003 to produce our past show and donor female Pride VRD 12P. Pride 63C is another stellar Wheel N Deal 143Y daughter that has raised top end bulls in our bull sale and Pride 20J was one of my favorite heifer calves on pasture last summer.

Pride Family History

The Pride family came from the 2001 Red Roundup after winning the 50/50 draw and a $1000 sale credit. Red Fly Away Pride 161K went on to be a many times champion including the Showdown 2005 Supreme Champion. Our first attempt at breeding “purples” resulted in her daughter Pride VRD 12P who followed in her mothers competitive footsteps. Bill Dillibaugh and Jud Willms made us a substantial offer to purchase Pride 12P as a bred heifer, as they felt she could be the next Tibbie 15T. Boy are we glad we kept her, as she was a foundation cow and our very first donor female!

Pride 13J has been a favourite amongst visitors and reminds us alot of what cows like Ginger Barbie 1E, Auburn 19E and Heather 89E looked like as bred heifers. They of course were sired by Lewis 3008B. We retained Hawkeye 10G to replace his decease sire and to produce more gorgous females, and he is doing just that. We have been asked if we would be showing this heifer, and we really should have, but imagine what she could look like next year as a two year old. For a little differnt twist she is carrying an early service to the very popular John Wick son owned by Semex and Moose Creek called Mossy Oak.

Straight from the heart of our replacement pen comes this powerful Stark daughter. Our main business is producing bulls and Anne 88J is the type of females that produces herd sires. Her dam Anne 144F is a maternal sister to Black Wheel Dracary 86G who has made a profound impact on the Allison Farms program. The grand-dam Anne 93B was the poster girl for Magic Mike udders, and ideal teat size is a trademark of this cow family. The resulting calf by Typhoon will compliment this female nicely, and should produce a quick return on investment. 88J had a severe naval infection as a calf.

The Becky family came as part of twenty females we leased in the fall of 1997 from Handford Red Angus of Tisdale, SK. Mother Becky 3A, daughter Becky 3C and grand-daughter Becky 805H would still be considered the right kind by todays standards. Structural soundess, udder quality and longevity were strengths of the original Becky cows. The Becky family came to Handford’s in their original package of females purchased from Ken Frazer of Six Mile Ranch with their roots tracing back to Red Line.

Auburn Family History

The Auburn family came with the purchase of Red Cranston Hera 3G from the Angus Connection sale to be Michael’s 4-H heifer. Tracing her roots back to her original cow family name we decided to name all her progeny as Auburn. Probably one of the best decisions we made in our early days was to stick with and recognise the importance of cow family names. Over the years many Auburn females have made their way to the donor pen including Auburn 2K, Auburn 76T, Auburn 89T and most recently Auburn 19E.

After Michael’s call inviting us to their 25th Anniversary Celebration my mind took 2 quick trips...One down memory lane and the other to the bred heifer pasture. Blondie 32J was an obvious choice. She has 25 plus years of history at our place, and she is relevant to the needs of todays seedstock producer. She is not perfect but when she lays down and calves her udder will likely be very close. Brood cow deluxe. This is definitely one of those times that you wonder what the heck your doing. Lady 42J is the kind that you don’t sell, because I believe her best years are ahead of her. The Ring Creek Lady 61Z has proven herself in our program and is as unique as they come, being straight black pedigreed. We wanted to show what kind of coupon our bred heifers could be carrying with their service to Typhoon, and Avocet 88K is a strong representative. They are clean fronted, dark red, long spined and massive topped. Typhoon calved very well for us and his calves still grow and mature into impressive individuals. One of our original cow families is represented in this Avocet female, and Riddler daughters are sure to be a strong foundation moving forward into the future.

The Avocet family was another family that came with the lease females from Handford’s. They were the largest cow family all tracing back to Red XXX Avocet 544SI who registered 57 progeny. Quite an accomplishment for a cow born in 1985! One of our favourite cows over the years was Red Handford Avocet 901J who was a daughter of Red Handford None Better 260D. To this day “260” is still probably Harvey’s favourite bull.

785K is a highly attractive SSS Deuce daughter, backed by a good looking, exceptional uddered, Tycoon dam. The Deuce heifer calves are all stamped similar in type and you can see the Rosebud cow in all of them. 785K is extremely sharp fronted, big middled, sound and has exceptional teat placement. This young lady could not have a more stacked pedigree, with some of all the “Greats” in top and bottom.

Princess 723K is a unique genetic gem, with some of the most maternal pedigree’s the red and black have to offer. She is without a doubt a one of a kind piece. Our Capitol daughters seem to knock it out of the park every time, and this heifer calf is no exception. She is broody and thick, and was only born at the end of April. Her pedigree is stacked. Capitol is a son of Red Twin Heritage Hustle 25A, we are still running him at 8 years old, and we cannot speak highly enough about his daughters’ udder quality, and production. We feel Hard Knox is one of the most unique calving ease bulls available today. His first calf crop here and for Jay Spence proved he could be used successfuly on heifers, and that he passes his dark red and correct phenotype on to his offspring. His dam Auburn 19E has proven to moderate birth weights when bred to a variety of sires, and also raised the high seller in our 2021 bull sale. Hard Knox sons will be an easy sell to commercial cattlemen, and the maternal strength of the cows behind him ensures his daughters will be the right kind. Hard Knox is right for the times and what the market is demanding. If we would have had time Hard Knox could definitely have been on the show road this fall.

Stark is an outcross sire whose future is incredibly bright. His progeny are gaining recognition in our program and around the country. Stark daughters are his crowning glory. We are absolutely blown away by their volume, feed efficiency, gentle nature and phenotype. We would love to have a whole herd of females just like them. There will only be 120 units of semen offered in Canada and the United States on this sire from now until October 2023.

Before we started in the purebred business we ran a large commercial herd, and our breeding philosophies and strategies have always centered around breeding better cattle for the commercial cattlemen. We decided to offer a couple groups of Red Angus bred heifers as part of this celebration sale. They are sorted according to type and breeding.
