Welcome to the Westway Top 50 Female Sale, this will be a sale that highlights great cattle and even better people to work with.Westway Farms Ltd, the Hadway family are some of the most passionate and hard-working individuals in the agricultural industry.Whether it is grain farming, seed cleaning, woodworking or purebred cattle, they put 110% into every aspect and are ideal examples of an agricultural family that works hard and makes time for strong family values. As the Westway cattle numbers continue to grow and Andie moved to Kansas for school, it was only fitting that Dayna and Josie (I believe Will always tries to find a piece of equipment to operate during cattle duties) worked with us to create the Top 50 Female Sale to decrease the workload and most importantly showcase the heart of their program to the world. The WFL Top 50 Female Sale is a very intriguing event where it showcases the very best of 2 years of breeding decisions.When we toured through the cowherd this summer, we were instructed to select the very best to represent their herd. A very strong, large group of breds and a deep group of opens will make up the Top 50 young cattle that Westway have to offer.The sale cattle branch back to cornerstone cow families that have constructed the WFL herd.When it comes to finding the right herd sires for WFL, they cut no corners as they have acquired some of the most sought after herd sires in the breed today. Many of these sires have been held exclusive to WFL and this will be the first opportunity to acquire their genetics through a female. We are extremely excited to Welcome you to the Westway Farms “TOP 50 FEMALE SALE�. It is a pretty big deal for Tom to let go of these cows since so many years of breeding planning has gone into developing the program to where it is today. The females in the sale literally represent the Westway Simmental Breeding Program from the start of its development in 1996 to today. Ten of the bred females in the sale go back to our first bull purchase from Lewis Farms. That bull was LFE King William 357E. Eighteen years later you can still trace the impact he had on our herd and believe it or not, every year when calving starts it is still as exciting as when the first King William calf hit the ground. Being a good cattleperson not only requires you to be good at hands-on, it requires you to be a visionary. To see what your breeding program is going to look like two years down the road, ten years down the road, or eighteen years down the road. At Westway, we are proud of where the road has taken us and where our Simmental program is today. The future of cattle is BIG and BRIGHT and we invite you so study our sale offering and see if one of these females can add some maternal strength to your own program. Scott Bohrson was given the job of selecting cattle for the sale and nothing was held back. Scott had full access to our cattle and he selected 40 bred heifers and 10 heifer calves. This offering will include red and black genetics and a majority of the females are purebred. We also have a handful of bred heifers with those crossbred genetics that find success in the Westcross Program. The cattle business is a great business to raise children in and we have been blessed to do just that. Our four kids have taken active roles in raising our cattle. From herd health to feeding to sire selection....all four have had their input in the cattle operation. The influence that the cattle business has had on our family has been so positive and we are so grateful for all the friendships and all the rewards our kids received while showing cattle and participating in junior cattle programs. These programs teach youth so much and have a wonderful influence on who these youth can become. We are so grateful for each and every individual who has taken time out of their lives to volunteer and make shows like these happen. We are also very grateful to every junior who took time out to teach our kids a skill. In celebration of our TOP 50 Sale and to show our appreciation to some Junior Programs that have played a major role in our lives we will be donating all the proceeds from Lot 44 to be shared equally with the Alberta YCS Program, the Canadian National Junior All Breeds Program and the Summer Synergy Program. We would have loved to have included our local West Didsbury 4-H Club in the mix but after 60 plus years, the club is taking a year off. Youth cattle programs are so valuable and we encourage anyone who can support them to jump at the chance. The cattle will be at the farm prior to the sale and if you would like we invite you to stop to view the offering. The coffee pot is always handy for farm visitors. We purchased MRL 138Z from McMillen Ranches in 2013 and he is sired by Lchmn Bright Light L122L (also known as Hoosier in ABS’s Catalogue). The MRL 138Z bull appealed to us because of his epd’s and outcross pedigree. We specifically bought this bull for our heifer breeding program and he has proven himself in this department. His is a very im-pressive black bull who is adding some value to the Westway Program. He’s aging like wine.....he keeps getting better! We are excited about this bull!

MRL 135A is a red homopolled bull who is sired by IPU Red Western 49X. Red Western was the high selling bull at Labatt’s 2011 sale going to McMillen Ranching and Ashworth’s. His dam goes back to a Cosby x MRL 443N daughter. MRL 443N is a McMillen donor cow who has very impressive maternal credentials.

Red Mountain is another IPU Red Western 49X son. Red Mountain was the $75,000 high selling red bull in Canada in 2013. A one time offer of semen packages was made at Ash-worth’s 2014 bull sale with all proceeds going to STARS. We were fortunate to buy a package and we are very excited to see his calves hit the ground this spring. This was a one time offer on the semen for this bull so we invite you to check out the breds carrying his service.

Bootlegger is a Semex AI bull we decided to use after analyzing the success TNT has had with his sire, the DCR Moonshine X102 bull. DCR Moonshine is sired by R Plus Moonshine 7077T. In fact, the R Plus Moonshine bull is sired by Twin Chief Prince (a bull we really liked) and R Plus 5055R, a female whose pedigree goes back to the WFL 517H Cow. Bootlegger’s pedigree and epd’s interested us and we thought he would be a great red Simmental AI sire to add to our program. Semex promotes Bootlegger as complete in his makeup and flawless in design. A bull with power, performance and pounds.
TNT 90 Proof Z401 90 Proof is also sired by DCR Moonshine X102 and is a Genex AI Sire. Genex promotes 90 Proof as a red Simmental bull made perfect from the ground up who is extremely deep, stout and who has impressive epd’s. We thought it would be worth comparing these two TNT AI Sires in our own breeding program.
It is never easy to part with cattle that you have worked years on breeding but we are excited to have such a great package of breds available that truly represent the Westway Simmental Program. We have decided not to write footnotes for each as we know they would just start sounding like the repeat button has been hit. Tom culls the cow herd with a very strict check list and it is important that every female have the following traits: good feet, good udders, good dispositions and they must produce quality offspring. Tom’s strict culling program allows the Westway program to maintain a strong maternal base that it can keep building on. We also buy herdsires that carry strong maternal pedigrees so that the two can work hand in hand. We all know how important mamas are in life. Over half of the bred heifers on offer are sired by either Muirheads Lights Out 4Y (a TCF/RCC Temptation GJ640 son) or LFE Tom Cat 389X (a LFE Dreaming Red 5035S son).The dams of these bred heifers carry the pedigree of Westway’s herdsires which include: Redge, Blackedge, Bring,Wheatland 440, LFE 327K, King William, Bullseye, Strait-Up, NCB Red Dream, and Crossfire. Almost half of the offering have dams who were sired by either Blackedge or Redge. These two bulls certainly had a positive impact on our herd and in the Simmental industry. The Blackedge and Redge daughters are productive, easy keeping and sound females. The dams also go back to the maternal genetics of our top cow families of the Red Doll cow family, the WFL 5N cow family and the Hinsdale cow family. The breedings on the bred heifers include: MRL 138Z (Lchmn Bright Light), MRL 135A (Red Western), KWAF 16Z (Red Western),TNT Bootlegger (Mr. Moonshine),TNT 90 Proof (Mr. Moonshine), Reload (Hardrock) and Lights. These females reflect the Westway breeding program and this is an excellent opportunity for you to purchase some of the genetics Westway has been using. The open heifers that we have on offer for sale are beauties! It’s always hard to part with these young females because in your mind you are already analyzing what sire you would breed each heifer to. We are really proud of these females ... they are the type we try so hard to raise. These girls represent our herdsire battery quite nicely. Six of the red heifers are all sired by Muirheads Lights Out 4Y. The dams of these red heifers are all sired by R Plus Redge 8018U. These are a very sweet package of heifers who are all very similar in type and makeup. WFL Red Snazzy 420B is a sale feature and she goes back to the Red Doll Cow family on the bottom side. there is also one sweet Reload heifer calf. Two of the four black heifers are sired by the MRL 135Z bull and one by Broker and the final by WFL 16Y (a Superior son). We purchased LFE Tom Cat 389X, a LFE Dreaming Red son, to specifically use on our heifer pen. Tom Cat’s dam goes back to the LFE Amber cow family who Tom is very fond of. The LFE Amber cow family has produced some great cattle in the Simmental industry. TCat calves like a dream and he really leaves his dark red stamp on his calves. We have eleven bred heifers in the sale sired by LFE TCat and all of them are first time mamas. This is a testament to just how good TCat worked in the heifer pen.
LightsOut
Westway purchased Lights Out 4Y, a Temptation son, from Muirhead’s in 2012 and these are our first set of Lights Out females to sell. Lights Out was a sale feature and he is the complete package. Muirheads’s felt he was a bull with a big future and he is just that. It is important to recognize the maternal power that Lights carries. There is predicatbility in the 211S Cow Family and Muirhead’s have had great success with her progeny. Lights Out had a big year breeding as he went from Westway to Muirhead’s so they MUIRHEADS LIGHTS OUT 4Y could use him on their fall calving program.
Terms & Conditions
BIDDING AND APPLICABLE LAW: All cattle listed in this offering comply with prevailing sale terms and conditions as set forth by the laws of the state wherein the sale is conducted.There are no warranties, expressed or implied, by either the auctioneer or consignor, except as set forth herein, as to the merchantability of fitness for any particular purpose of any animal offered in this sale.The right to bid or the right to reject the final bid, if done before the hammer falls, is reserved for all sellers unless otherwise announced from the sale block or as prohibited by law in the state wherein the sale is being conducted. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Any change of information other than in the catalog will be announced from the auction block and such announcements shall take precedence over printed material. All statements made from the auction block or those made by the seller (in private treaty), must be docu- mented by seller if requested by the buyer at time of sale. TERMS:Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made with the seller previous to the sale of any animal so affected. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the property of and therefore is also the risk of the purchaser as soon as it is sold; except it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to purchaser, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of twenty-four (24) hours after the sale, whichever occurs first. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: 1.All cattle entered for sale must meet the health regulations of the state in which they are sold. All other agreements regarding the animal will be between the buyer and seller and should be docu- mented in writing. 2. If sale cattle are returned to the seller for an adjustment, they must meet the health requirements of the state they are returned to. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: Each animal, which is catalogued, offered and sold as a registered animal, shall have a certificate of registry available at time of sale.When an animal is sold as “eligible for registry” or “registry applied for”, the seller shall be responsible for obtaining the certificate of registry and for the proper transfer of the certificate to the purchaser includ- ing full payment of transfer fees. IDENTIFICATION: Each animal, at time of sale, must have a readable tat- too or brand corresponding to that shown on the certificate of registration. AUTHENTICITY OF PEDIGREE:When an animal, through parental validation, is determined to have an ancestry other than that reported on the registration certificate, the buyer shall be entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense.The animal in question, at the buyer’s option, may be exchanged for another animal of equal value, or if agreeable with the buyer, the seller may have the certificate returned to the buyer. Any adjustment provided herein, if selected, shall absolve the seller from further liability for authenticity of pedigree to the buyer. BREEDING GUARANTEES AND DEFINITIONS: 1. Females are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of: a) Female calves sold at side of dam b) Injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale c) Gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser d) Females used in ovum transplant after time of sale e) Cows sold with calf at side or a female that calve 2. Bulls are guaranteed to be breeders (definition as the ability to settle healthy cows by the time the bull is 18 months of age) 3. Any guarantees with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be made by separate agreement between buyer and seller. 4. Safe in calf females are females that have been diagnosed pregnant by a competent veterinarian, and are pregnant at time of sale. 5. A bred female is a female known to have been served by a bull either by natural breeding or artificial insemination, but it does not necessarily mean that the female is safe in calf to that service. 6. A pasture-bred female is a female that has been pastured with a desig- nated bull and has been exposed for the time stated, but it does not neces- sarily mean that this female is safe in calf to that bull. 7. An open female is a non-pregnant animal. 8. Calves sold off their dams (split pairs) shall carry the full breeding guarantee. PRIVILEGE OF PURCHASER TO EXAMINE:The purchaser of a female animal may have her examined within twenty-four (24) hours after the fall of the hammer and prior to removal from sale premises.The pregnancy status of breeding status of a female so examined, when found not to be as represented at the time of sale, is cause for the female to be returned to the seller as unsold. EMBRYO TRANSFER: 1. Sellers should provide upon request a complete history of embryo trans- fer activity for any female offered for sale. 2.Withholding information on the existence of frozen embryos at the time of sale would be considered an unethical practice. HORNED-SCURRED-POLLED DEFINITIONS: 1. HORNED — An animal with a horn growth affixed to the skull that has or has not been removed. 2. POLLED/SCURRED — An animal with rudimentary horn growth that will not develop into a horn.The rudimentary horn growth may or may not become affixed to the skull at an older age. 3. POLLED — An animal with absence of horn growth. (An animal can have scurs and still be genetically polled.) 4. SMOOTH POLLED — A smooth-polled individual has no scurs and does not develop scurs later in life. GUARANTEES: 1. If an animal is sold as polled or polled/scurred and proves to be horned, the seller shall be obligated to refund the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the expense of the seller or may be exchanged for a polled animal of equal value whichever is acceptable to the buyer.The buyer has thirty (30) days from date of sale to notify the seller that an adjustment is in order. 2. If an animal is sold as smooth-polled and proves to be scurred, the seller shall be obligated to refund the price upon return of the animal to the farm of theseller at the expense of the seller or at the buyer’s option shall be exchanged for a smooth-polled animal of equal value. 3. If an animal is sold as polled and develops scurs, the seller will not be obligated to make any adjustment as a scurred animal is considered polled. 4. If an animal is sold as polled and has scurs, it shall be so announced at the time of sale that the animal has scurs. If it is not announced and the buyer finds before the animal leaves the sale premises that the animal has scurs, the buyer must notify the seller of the findings.The seller shall then be obligated to refund the purchase price. OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT:The following adjustments do not preclude the right of the buyer and seller to mutually agree upon other terms and conditions for settlement of any dispute. 1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either six (6) months from the date of sale or no later than when the animal reaches 24 months of age whichever occurs later, with the exception of claims involv- ing misrepresentation of service sire or as otherwise provided herein. 2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the seller, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition, and the return is in compliance with the health require- ments of the seller’s state.The seller shall be entitled to a six (6) month trial period following the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six (6) months the seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at the option of buyer, replace the animal with another equal value or refund the purchase price. Either option shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. 3. If a female is sold as “safe in calf” to a given sire or sires on a specified date or dates and proves not to be as represented, the buyer is entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal and resulting progeny thereof to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense. 4. If a female is sold as “open” and proves to be with calf at time of sale and examined pregnant within sixty (60) days after sale, the buyer may return the animal to the farm of the seller prior to calving for a refund of the full purchase price or for another animal of equal value, whichever acceptable to the buyer. It shall be the obligation of the seller to bear any expenses incurred for transportation of the animal in question to the farm of the seller. GENETIC TESTING AND TraitTrac STATUS: Sellers must identify the TraitTrac status and the results of any qualitative genetic testing performed on any animals or genetic material offered for sale.The ASA considers it an unethical practice to misrepresent or fail to disclose the TraitTrac status or qualitative genetic test results of any animal or genetic material. DISCLOSURE OF MATERIAL INFORMATION: Sellers must disclose all material information concerning any animal or genetic material offered for sale. For the purposes of these Sale Terms and Conditions,“Material Information” is defined as any information which would be likely to affect the value of the animal or genetic material if the information were known to the public. Material Information includes, but is not limited to, information related to genetic tests, blood tests, ultrasound pregnancy results, disease tests, pregnancy and fertility test results, information related to the sex and age of in utero calves or embryos, and information related to the fertilization status of in utero calves, including whether the calf was conceived via artificial insemination or natural service.The ASA considers it an unethical practice to misrepresent or fail to disclose any Material Information concerning an animal or genetic material offered for sale. LIMITATIONS OF OBLIGATIONS:These sale terms and conditions constitute a binding legal obligation between the buyer and seller of any animal or genetic material sold under these terms and conditions. However, the ASA, its directors, officers, employees and agents do not assume any obli- gation, legal or otherwise, to enforce the sale terms and conditions agreed to between buyer and seller.
