Welcome to our 10th Annual Bull Sale! Steppler Farms will also be celebrating 100 years farming this year. We had planned to host a huge celebration this summer, but since we are in a covid environment, we will be postponing it until the summer of 2022. Stay tuned for the details on that.

This year, we are again putting forth an increased offering to aid you in your next herd sire selection. The bulls are presented in their sire groups again, so you will be able to see the strengths of each of our herdsires. They aren’t all the same, no doubt! El Paso, Contender, Full House, Charm and Baron are your performance oriented sire groups; whereas, Braxton, Odessa, Winchester and Driftwood are your calving ease specialists. We also can’t forget the senior herd sires – Hacienda and Burnin’ It Down, who have consistently worked in our program.

Before you go through the offering, make sure to check out our warranty programs. These programs have now been tested here for several years and they work. They are simple and easy, and provide you more value with your purchases. Let us take the risk of your new herd bull and don’t forget our goal – to get your cows bred and to a great bull! In the past few years, we have noticed another way to provide more value to you. Let’s face it, injuries can come at a awful time and nobody has the time to track down a bull last minute. Andre This year is special for the Steppler Farms. It is their 100th year of farming, their 47th year in Charolais, and their 10th Annual Bull sale, which is also the largest offering of bulls they have put forth. These are the bulls from their 600 purebred cows that have been meticulously selected for all the valuable traits: calving ease, structural soundness with adequate performance. With this many cows they don’t have time to babysit or put up with problem females. Those cows are culled leaving a very functional set of females.

The bull pen again is very impressive with some new genetics and some proven sires represented. From bulls that would work in the heifer pen to bulls that will add big performance to any cowherd. With over 100 bulls to choose from, there is definitely something for the most discriminating cattlemen.

They are also backed by the most comprehensive warranty in the industry that comes at no extra cost to you. Read through the warranty section and save your insurance dollars to buy the bull that you want. The catalogue is done in sire groups to make it easier to see the consistency of type and strengths. This also allows you to easily put some ½ and ¾ brothers together for consistent calf crops. If you are looking for some two-year old bulls, there is a strong set here again. These aren’t leftover bulls but were held and developed slowly since weaning, to be bulls that will go out, work and last.

Steppler Farms Breeding Warranty • All bulls sold through the 2021 bull sale are covered for injury and death 6 months after the March 14th bull sale date with ZERO PREMIUM.

•Y ou will receive a full sales credit to be used in next year’s 2022 bull sale. Steppler Farms will only cover up to a $10,000 investment on a bull. If a buyer wants to cover a more expensive bull, he or she will need to deal with their own outside insurance.

• The buyer must contact Steppler Farms immediately to ensure coverage is within the 6-month warranty date.

•B uyer will receive a backup bull to get their cows bred at zero charge to the buyer.

• All injured bulls become the property of Steppler Farms and a signed transferable registration paper must accompany the bull upon return.

•T he backup bull must be returned by the customer to Steppler Farms by October 1st.

• If requested, injured bulls must be checked by a certified vet and this report shared with Steppler Farms.

Steppler Farms Herd Bull Guarantee We want to make sure the sale bull you purchase meets your requirements. Not all bulls work out as hoped. Steppler Farms sale bulls have met the following requirements in our goal of ensuring customer satisfaction when you purchase a sale bull:

•B ulls must be returned to Steppler Farms with a satisfactory body condition score, with a signed transferable registration paper. Steppler Farms reserves the right to deduct from the sales credit for any bull returned with a body condition score lower than 3.

Steppler Farms also assumes full possession of the returned bull.

• All bulls have passed a semen evaluation and are sold with a semen report.

The Herd Bull Guarantee is as follows:

• All bulls are selected for sound structure with breeding capability.

After 1 breeding season - 75% sale credit of the original sale price to be used in the next year’s sale.

• All bulls are handled and are guaranteed to be able to be worked with proper handling skills.

Year 2 - 50% sale credit of the original sale price to be used in the next year’s sale.

• All bulls have been fed a high forage diet which develops the bulls to be able to recondition themselves.

Year 3 - 25% sale credit of the original sale price to be used in the next year’s sale.

Calving Ease Rank The majority of cattlemen’s programs have changed in the past decade; with larger cattle herds and more calves born on grass, calving assists must be minimal. Calving ease has always been an important consideration in our breeding program, so we have included a calving ease score to help you select your next herd sires. We provide in the catalogue actual birthweights, and birthweight and calving ease EPDs. Before selecting your next sire, first evaluate your cow herd and breeding program and know the type of bulls that work for you. All bulls should sire calves with high levels of vigour at birth, with the majority being born unassisted as long as the bulls are used on the recommended cow type. I should note that we run several different types and ages of females, so we have used bulls on all 4 levels of our calving ease score. By using our calving ease score, you get my best evaluation of a bull’s calving ability, so we have included a calving ease ranking to help you select your next herd sires.

My criteria when I determine a bull’s calving ease score: Phenotype

How the bull is made. Structural soundness for calving ease. Smooth shouldered smaller head, degree of bone, balance.

Gestation

Days between conception and birth date.

Maternal calving ease

Pedigree - How predictable and consistent has the pedigree been for calving. Ex - Inconsistency can come from a larger birthweight grandmother.

Actual Birthweight and Calving Ease

Each calf is weighed, and a calving ease score given at time of birth.

Environment

• Weather and nutrition of dam in the last 30 days of gestation. Calves’ birthweights and calving ease can be substantially different when comparing calves born the 1st of January to those born the 1st of March.

• Outside factors affecting the calf’s actual data (Twin, placenta issues, dam injury, etc.).

Ask these questions when you evaluate your cow herd:

• What are my calving ease expectations and program goals?

• What does my cow herd look like?

Breed, cow size, age of female, female genetics • What are my management factors?

Nutrition, exercise, time, and interval of calving • What are outside influences?

Flagstaff was acquired from Harcourt Charolais to breed our Braxton daughters. He has done a tremendous job giving us that added shape and easy doingness. Heifer bull alert! DSY 271H is a sale feature! Several factors have to be in place to get a true heifer bull. 1- He must be made right; smooth fronted, small headed, and a degree of a finer bone structure. 2- He must have a predictable, moderate to smaller-framed dam. When we calve over 150 heifers a year, bulls that have bigger birthweight mothers just don’t cut it. 44C is that moderate framed, finer boned female. Blue Value x White Arrow = consistency. Let’s also not forget, she has a beautiful, milky udder and a solid foot. 3- Then we must look at the bull’s actual birthweight, calving ease score, and EPDs. These all must suggest easier calving. We bought Braxton because we believed he had the potential to take our cow herd to the next level. By teaming up with Beck Farms, SK, we were able to purchase this breed leader who was the highest selling bull in Canada that year. Braxton is one of the most impressive bulls we have ever walked at Steppler Farms. Braxton is so fluid in his stride; he is quiet, deep chested, huge hipped, with perfect structure, and he comes from a tremendous cow. The calving ease in this sire is second to none. The calves have a tremendous amount of vigour at birth and never look back. The Braxton females are simply awesome. Great milking ability, which directly correlates into the high indexing bulls for our 2021 bull sale.

We purchased Full House from Cay’s Cattle from the 2018 PCC bull sale. We first got excited about this pedigree at Farmfair International 2015 Supreme show. We purchased Winchester from Pro-Char Charolais to run in our heifer pen and what a job he has done for us. Winchester was recently purchased by CK Sparrow Farms and will continue his consistency in calving ease. We probably didn’t realize when we bought Winchester, how great a female maker he would become The Winchester females are simply awesome. The whole sire group is consistent in their moderate frame, easy doing ability, sound structure and are already laying down that cattleman’s udder. The Winchesters calved efficiently and are great mother cows, with ample milk and beautiful udder structures.

Winchesters are such functional females that can do so much for the industry.

We purchased Seminole 927W as a yearling out of Sparrow Farms 2009 bull sale because we were impressed by the bull’s tremendous thickness, length of spine and depth of rib. In addition, Seminole is correct in every way and is perfectly footed, with lots of hair, and excellent teticle development. With Seminole, we won 2010 Supreme Champion Bull at MLE, as well as winning Grand Champion Charolais bull the same year. We used Seminole heavily in our breeding program and he now has a spot as the cornerstone sire at Steppler Farms. The Seminole females are simply awesome, with excellent udders and ample milk. Seminole’s Australian semen rights were sold to Bauhinia Park Charolais with great results!

Bull Management Get your bull settled in

ulls can sometimes have difficulties settling into a new B environment. Different feed, management practices and climate all contribute to new stressors for the bull. If you want your bull to reach his highest breeding potential, it is important to get him a few weeks prior to breeding to make this transition easier. If you don’t have an extra pen or space, sometimes this just isn’t a reality and a box stall in the old barn doesn’t count as a pen for the bull.

Evaluate breeding and re-evaluate his breeding soundness throughout the season With yearlings and virgin two-year olds, we need to make sure they can effectively breed a cow. Time and patience are essential! If your breeding season happens on grass, this evaluation becomes more difficult, but due diligence will aid in preventing lost time and open cows. Take the time to evaluate the bull throughout the breeding season.

If you suspect an issue, contact me immediately. Back up bulls are always on hand.

Recheck semen and re-evaluate breeding soundness the following year

Pull your bull and provide proper nutirition accordingly

he most important management practice for ensuring T your bulls’ next year service is to pull them from the cows. all bulls will perform better and recondition more efficiently if they are pulled and fed the proper nutrition to regain lost weight, grow and put on needed muscle for the following year. Work with your nutritionist to develop the right ration for your bulls. Having your younger bulls away from your mature bulls is also well worth the investment. Younger bulls can be built up more effectively and the mature bulls won’t get over conditioned.

Semen testing bulls after the sale

ith such an early bull sale we have decided to semen W test the bulls after the bull sale. With the majority of the bulls not going to work until end of the spring, a later semen check date will evaluate the fertility of the bull at the correct time. Two dates have already been booked for semen evaluation: end of March and end of April. We will also semen check any bull immediately after the sale if requested. All bulls will have scrotal measurement on sale day.

Leading up to the next breeding season, it is important to recheck semen and the bull’s ability to breed. Injuries and damage from our cold winters can greatly affect the bull’s breeding potential.

Health Protocol & Nutrition Production and efficiencies are very important on our farm. We have a short, intensive breeding program. All females are AI bred for efficiencies and calculated mating’s. We try to get 95% of the cows exposed in the first cycle with a 70-75% conception rate. Correct, accurate nutrition, high quality semen, and time invested in heat detection and inseminating are the keys to achieving this target. Once the cows go through the 28-day AI program, the herd bulls go to work. Since most of the cows have conceived already, the herd bulls finish the job. The mature bulls easily travel throughout the last 32 days o`f the breeding program. All females are pregnancy checked early in the summer and culls and opens are taken out.

We maintain a high and rigorous herd health regime as outlined below. This enables us to have a successful breeding program and ensures potential buyers of the high health standards of these sale cattle.

terms & Conditions Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made.

Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final.

Announcements: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue.

Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements.

Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured.

Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made.

Breeder Guarantee – Females: As per the Canadian Charolais Association Code of Ethics, copies available at the settlement desk can picked up by the buyer at any time.

Exception Guarantee: In case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the

sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price.

Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager, auctioneer, or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property.

By Livestock is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of any warrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestock assumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies between parties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. Any legal action taken in exceptional cases must be between the buyer and the seller. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfilment of all guarantees and representations.

Insurance: Insurance will be available sale day.

Pictures: By attending the sale you are granting permission for your picture to be used for promotional and advertising purposes relating to the sale.
