Red Willow Ranch Bull & Female Sale 2024 :: SALE RESULTS

Welcome to our third on-farm bull & female sale. In terms of diversity, yet maintaining consistency, we feel we’ve upped the ante when it comes to the bulls and heifers on offer this year. On the bull side, we’ve got calving ease prospects with a bit more performance compared to previous years, as well as some real powerhouse-type bulls. Our purebred and commercial heifers are strong groups. We’ve got a good mix of both the showy, stylish, ultra-feminine kind as well as the powerful, broody, herd-builder kind.

This years’ offering of Fullbloods are consistent, thick-made, heavy-haired, powerful and stylish bulls that really have a lot to offer. We encourage you to take serious consideration in these bulls for your cross-breeding programs, as we feel they offer a lot of heterosis gain and a boost in yield on your calf crop.

The Red Bulls are performance-driven, solid built bulls with pen presence and style. Many of them having that shot of fullblood in the pedigree, sure adds that extra boost that we’ve come to appreciate and expect within our red division.

The Black Bulls are a sight to see with the Wheatland Dimensional 1147J leading the pack. They’re stout-made and extreme in thickness, rib, and style. They’re powerfully unique and we feel they offer a level of versatility that we haven’t delivered from our black bull offering before.

The markets have been doing well and we’ve seen new highs reached within the industry. Take careful consideration in securing herd bulls that are going to help you capitalize on the upward trends and set those new records. A good bull can pay dividends on a calf crop in a short period of time!

The fullblood bulls have always been the staple here at RWR. This years offering is as consistent in type and kind as ever seen before. The Red bulls on offer are real world bulls that are a commercial cattleman’s delight. Many are fullblood factor and certainly offer many great traits purebred and fullblood cattle are known for. This is a really neat opportunity to step into a set of bulls that will offer equally as much maternal upswing as they do feed conversion and yield to a calf crop.

The Black bulls are the strongest set of this colour they have ever had and are impressively deep ribbed and powerful. The steer calves sired by these black bulls will be the type to top the market and the heifer calves will be the front end replacement type.

The purebred heifers available are your once a year chance to acquire a female with the RWR prefix. These females are carefully selected to represent both the powerful sire groups that mate to the bulls and the proven and consistent cow families that back the program.

The pens of commercial heifers are some of the very best you will find anywhere in Canada each year. The large commercial cowherd at RWR provides them the availability to sort together groups of consistent and uniform heifers that are extremely powerful, hairy and attractive.

Nutritionist Note

Heifers and bulls alike represent a great investment into the future generations of your herd, as such they are animals that we want to perform for many years to come. Similar to bulls, heifer development relies on proper balances between natural proteins and carbohydrates. This promotes maximum lean protein accretion (muscle development) which not only enhances the expression of the animal’s genetic potential but builds the underlying foundation of muscle that will carry the animal through lactation and successful breeding seasons. To further optimize vigor and immunity of the animal, it is the balance between trace minerals that affects absorption and maximum cellular function. Macro minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium are also adjusted for interactions with other minerals such as potassium, and balanced in ratios for optimal bone development. Additionally, these bulls were placed on a biotin program to ensure healthy hoof growth to ensure that he will walk the pastures and work in all situations. A smooth transition from one operation to another as your new sire begins to work is important for his longevity as he performs in your herd for years to come. Thus, proper nutrition for the bulls when they get home is critical. We recommend that bulls are put on to a similar ration as the lactating cows they will be breeding for at least 40 days prior to turn out. For heifers we recommend increasing the plain of nutrition (by giving slightly more grain for instance) 21 days before breeding and again when the bulls go out to optimize reproductive success. We recognize that this is not always possible as animals may be breeding for early January or even on grass. Therefore, Red Willow Ranch bulls and heifers will be on a high forage diet to match with breeding conditions as much as possible allowing for a smooth transition.

At Red Willow Ranch, all animals have been developed on balanced and monitored rations from calves on the dam through to what you see today. Hard muscle, under a layer of conditioning is required to sustain both bulls and heifers through this breeding season and many more to come. We want satisfied customers to recognize the time and development that goes into making good seed stock animals, and come back for many more in the future. It is the careful monitoring of these animals’ development in cooperation with the nutritionist that makes them last.

Mogul is everything we look for in a fullblood herd sire and after seeing his 2nd calf crop develop, it’s proof of what he brings to the table in terms of style, colour, and overall consistency within his progeny. The group of bulls sired by him is the most uniform group we feel we’ve offered on the fullblood side of things in a long time. They are similar in pattern to Mogul. They’re sound, come with some stretch, and of course have that heavy haircoat and deep colour we strive for. They’re incredibly useful bulls that calve like a dream. We’ve really enjoyed watching these Mogul bulls and heifers develop over the last couple years. Mogul has matured into an extremely impressive herd bull. Pictured here as only a 3 year old, it exemplifies the sheer thickness and muscling he possesses.

Sterling’s calves have thoroughly impressed us, exceeding our expectations. We purchased Sterling in hopes he would add his colour, length, and thickness to our fullbloods, and he did. He has a clean, extended front end and added that to his bulls as a bonus. We feel his calves are very versatile and right for the times. His females are fantastic!

Finding a fullblood heifer bull that checks all the boxes and then some is a feat, but boy we were happy to find Boone. He’s a powerful bull but built right and knew he’d work on our heifers. We couldn’t be more pleased with his first calf crop. Not only did he calve well for us, he also threw incredible colour, style, and mass into his calves. We appreciate this bull and his progeny for the balance, smoothness, consistency, and overall completeness of the entire group. Boone really adds an impressive loin and top to his bulls. If there was ever an award for “best behaved in the picture pen,” his sons would win first place. Calves will be registered early February.

A bull that needs no introduction around here, but deserves one anyway, RWR 16B. Back by popular demand, are a set of sons that reminded us just how great of a sire he is. The past 16B sons have been so well received, throwing growth, tons of hair, dark red colour, and solid structure. RWR Outstand 16B is an absolute tank of a bull, a heck of a breeder, and has been an incredible asset to the herd of females we’ve put together on the ranch. Many of our high selling bulls go back to 16B females.
