WELCOME On behalf of the Hadway Family, and the whole Westway Crew, we Welcome you to the 21st Edition of the Westway Farms Bull Sale. Compiling the sale catalogue has been a bit challenging this year as there is a new little on the farm who is causing some distraction. We are so happy for Andie and Bill with the birth of Traig William Schmidt on November 28, 2023. Traig had an early arrival into this world and he is being loved on hard!

We are very excited about our 2024 offering and we believe that we have an extremely consistent and uniform set of bulls on offer. When breeding cattle, the middle ground is the hardest to accomplish when creating consistency in volume. It is our goal to create a balanced and consistent product while utilizing a multiple trait selection criteria approach. In our mind, the criteria that make cattle producers the most profit is fertility, longevity, and feed efficiency. Therefore, the cattle we raise must be functional and convert pounds of feed to pounds of weight gain. The cows must have good feet and udders, be fertile and breed up early and never held back when open. These traits must then be topped off with a cow that has a good disposition.

We are offering our largest group of red Simmental bulls to date and is one of the largest offerings of red Simmental bulls for sale in Alberta this spring! This group of bulls is highlighted by two new sire groups: KWA Monarch and WFL Mountain View and they have us very excited. The black Simmental offering has many half brothers where 10 of the 24 black Simmental and SimAngus bulls are backed by two elite black baldy donor cows.

The Angus offering is also the largest to date with many calving ease and performance options and primarily stem back to one sire; SAV Renown. The bulk of the Angus bulls on offer has come from the great Soderglen Program. We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase Soderglen’s winter calving cow/calf pairs from the dispersal of the Soderglen herd. We have long admired the Soderglen Program and feel these females will only strengthen our program with their type and make-up.

We have made a slight change in our sale format this year and the change is, the Westway Bull Sale will be LIVE at the Farm which means we will have a live auctioneer in real time. This has been a goal of ours for so many years and we are excited that we have finally reached this point. We can’t thank OAM enough for the past three years as we sincerely appreciate their support of our business and, more importantly, their friendship. OAM remains a part of the Westway Sale Team so please reach out to them if you wish to use their services at our Sale.

We invite you to review the offering and we invite you to visit the farm to walk through the bull pen and evaluate the bulls in their familiar surroundings and see which might be best suited for your own program. The Bull Sale will be held on Tuesday, February 27th, 1:00 p.m. at the farm. Please join us for lunch prior to the sale and enjoy some Westway hospitality.

As mentioned, 2023 has been a joyful year with the addition of Traig but there is even more good news!

We got to celebrate the engagement of Will and Leah in October and we will have another wedding at the farm this summer!! Carter and Cal attended their first YCS Show in Stettler and had a blast and there are big plans for the YSC National Show this summer in Olds. Conlen has even said he would try and show this year!!

WFL BULL GUARANTEE Westway Farms stands behind their bulls and will ensure that customers are handled in a professional manner if an incident may occur. Please contact one of the Westway representatives immediately if there is any issue with your bull purchase as we can provide you with a bull to breed your cows. All animals will carry a standard breeding guarantee as specified by the Canadian Simmental Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of the animals.

CATALOGUE INFORMATION The bulls are listed in the catalogue by sire and colour. All the bulls have been parents or sire verified.

Polled and coat colour tests have also been done and are listed in the catalogue under each bull. The EPD’s are current and up-to-date as of publication date. Information in this document is believed to be accurate. If there are any additional updates, the information will be provided on the Westway Farms website and on the WFL Sale Day supplement sheets. After May 1st, you will be charged $150 per month.

Westway Farms would like to recognize Shawn Miller for 25 years of Service with Westway. Shawn came on full time 25 years ago but he previously worked part-time on the farm since he was in High School. Shawn is the reliable, constant, steady at Westway and he has been involved in all aspects of the operation here.

Not only is he a good friend, he is part of our Family and our kids call him Uncle! We feel very blessed that we were able to raise our kids together with Shawn and Anje’s kids. The memories of all the kids on the farm together are some of the best and there isn’t a kid on the farm who didn’t share a Pepsi with Shawn!

Shawn is being promoted to Grandpa in May and we know he has lots to look forward to in that role! Shawn and Anje, thanks for the last 25+ Years and we Congratulate you Shawn and we Thank You for all you have done!

People of Westway

BULL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The bulls performed throughout the summer months on grass as there was high quality vegetation to be grazed along with their mothers milk.

The bulls only had creep feed for the last three weeks prior to weaning as the pastures started to brown off in August, also familiarising them with eating dry matter and the ability to eat on their own before weaning. The bulls were weaned at the start of September prior to the crew starting harvest. Weaning took place on September 3rd where the bulls were weaned in pens and put on a high forage mixed ration until the bawling was done. Once the bulls were through the weaning process they were put back into a 20 acre paddock where they were able to graze corn stalks and were supplemented with a high protein, forage based TMR ration.

On November 2nd the bulls were processed and sorted into their winter pens. The bulls have then been maintained on the high protein diet to enhance lean muscle development and maximize frame growth. The bulls continue to consume a total mixed ration, made up of straw for dry feed, along with a 5% barley grain, and the balance of ration being corn silage. The diet also contains a high quality low inclusion protein supplement from Bullseye Feeds that includes a vitamin and chelated mineral package to help boost the bulls overall health and immunity. The bulls feeding program is not intended to be an industry competition, it is a true test on our bulls ability to convert pounds of feed to pounds of weight gain. The bull’s overall diet is formulated to achieve a 3.0lbs ADG, allowing the bulls to show their true genetic potential. Lower converting bulls get weaned out prior to creating the catalog if their not achieving 3lbs ADG when we take yearling weights in early January. The bulls never have their feet trimmed prior to the sale and are semen tested by Didsbury Vet Clinic.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR VET DIDSBURY VETERINARY CLINIC

Welcome to the 2024 Westway Farms Bull Sale! All of the cattle at Westway Farms are on a complete herd health program and everyone at Didsbury Vet Services is proud to be able to partner with them as they work hard to bring you this outstanding group of bulls.

This herd health program for these bulls begins prior to even being born. All of the cows at Westway Farms receive a killed IBR/BVD vaccine, 8 way vaccine and Scour Bos 9 at preg check time in the fall as well as a topical Ivermectin for parasite control. This serves to maintain the overall health of all cattle present on the farm but also gets a headstart on the immunity of these bulls before they even hit the ground.

At birth, all calves receive Bovilis Nasalge. This is followed by 2 doses of Bovi Shield Gold One Shot and Ultrabac 7 Somnubac (IBR/BRSV/BVD/PI3 and 7 way Clostridial plus Histophilus Somnus). These are administered between pasture turnout in the spring and weaning in the fall. All sale bulls will have received 2 doses of Fusogard

Thank you

(footrot vaccine) as well, prior to leaving the farm after sale day. For parasite control, all calves receive a topical Ivermectin in the early fall and a topical Permethrin in the winter for lice control.

We will have completed a physical exam and semen evaluation of all bulls offered prior to sale day. Each bull will be assessed to determine soundness, excellent body condition score, and to be free of external visible defects. The semen evaluation includes physical palpation of the internal sex glands, testicles and epididymis and a visual exam of the penis during sample collection. A scrotal measurement is taken to ensure they are above minimum requirements for scrotal size. The semen is evaluated for motility and morphology and all bulls present at sale day will have received a passing grade above 70% or a decision deferred which means they will be reassessed and confirmed to pass prior to leaving the farm.

We are grateful to have a small part in the production of this excellent group of bulls.
