It is with great anticipation that we welcome you to our 9th Annual Online Bull Sale! This offering of bulls demonstrates the biggest leap that our program has made in recent years. It is our BIGGEST and BEST set of bulls ever, and we’re not just saying that! Seriously. This really is our biggest and best set due to our major investment into and expansion of our embryo transfer (ET) program over the last few years. For the first time ever, you will notice several groups of bulls that are flush brothers, or full and 3/4 brothers by blood. It is no secret that we have been investing heavily into many of the best donors and sires available in Canada for several years, but recipient cows have always been the limiting factor on really being able to flex our muscles and capitalize on what those donor cows can do for our program. Over the last two years, we have been markedly increasing the number of recipient cows that we implant within our ET program. We now implant two sets of recip cows; one for January calving and one for February. In 2023, we kicked it up a notch further and implanted 90 embryos, which equated to over half of our expected 2024 calf crop. Of course, not all of those embryos result in a live calf, but we certainly have been making strides to increase our consistency and relations amongst each calf crop, to build on our most elite cows and donors, and we will continue to do so into the future. I am very proud of the 43 bulls that we have on offer this year. As we continue to focus heavily on foot quality, soundness, disposition, udder quality and easy fleshing ability, those traits are more apparent than ever in this offering. We have received many compliments from sales management and visitors who have noticed the quality in this year’s bulls. Those kind words are heart warming, humbling, rewarding and motivating all at the same time. Further to that, we take great pride in feeding our bulls in such a way that we promote their development and longevity simultaneously. In the drought of 2021 when grain prices sky rocketed, we made some changes to our bull ration in an attempt to cut costs. Hard lesson learned, that was a big mistake as the ration has not performed the same since. We have struggled over the last three years to get our feeding program back on track so that the bulls perform to the standards that I expect. For the third year in a row, our bulls checked in about 200 lbs light in mid-November. Feeling very frustrated, I made a drastic change to our bull ration immediately after weigh day and ever since, we have been off to the races. If you notice that, once again, it seems like our YW are a little on the light side, that is the reason why. But, the good news is, we believe that we’ve finally got ourselves back on track for next year! And even more satisfying, the bulls look great! They are in ideal body condition, not over fat, not under conditioned. Exactly how I like them. You will see when the videos come out that the bulls are all able to get out and move with ease. Part of that is related to their structural soundness, but the other part is related to how we’ve developed them over the winter. I would be remiss to not acknowledge the big guy on the front cover of this year’s catalogue. At a value of $160,000, R Plus Mandate 1044J marks the largest single investment we’ve made in our breeding program over the years. His first sons lead off and highlight our 2024 offering and we are pleased with how Mandate has bred for us. We believe the Mandate bulls on offer will provide our commercial customers with valuable breeding bulls

that will meet their demands for calving ease combined with growth, length of body, quiet dispositions and foot quality. To round out our Mandate feature, we also decided to share a small quantity of his exclusive semen. This marks only the third time that we have offered Mandate’s semen at public auction since purchasing him two springs ago. This will be the last chance to secure Mandate’s semen for the 2024 breeding season. I encourage you to jump on the Mandate bandwagon and enjoy the ride! Now, a little less about the bulls and a little more about us. Our little boy, Layne, is growing up way too fast. He is just over 2.5 years now and acting like a five year old! He is very tall for his age and anyone who meets him can’t believe that he’s only two. He is talking up a storm, loves to be outside helping with chores, being around the cows and the pets, and going for tractor rides. Layne loves music, singing and dancing (thanks to his grandma who instilled a love for guitar and music very early on), enjoys drawing and doing puzzles, and especially loves any kind of new adventure. Most recently, he is starting to pretend play and he likes to pretend that he’s “fixing things like Daddy”, the most. Layne is a very lucky little boy and gets to spend a fair bit of time with his grandma and grandpa who live a few miles down the road, which is a huge help to Dustin and I when we have some busy days and need some kid-less hours to get some bigger tasks accomplished. We are blessed with a very happy, healthy, fun, sweet and of course, cute, little farm boy! Layne keeps us laughing and smiling every day. On the farm front, 2023 ended up being a relatively good year. June started off awful with horrendous heat stress and hoards of biting insects that tortured the poor livestock. Fortunately, Mother Nature smartened up further into June and we caught timely rains for the most part over summer. The only exception was one spotty rain event later in June that dumped over 5” of rain on our canola fields. Crop failure was inevitable on those fields, but otherwise our crops yielded well, hay fields produced very well and pasture quality was very good. It was a good year to be in cattle because summer treated them well and then the markets finally treated us well with those record high prices for calves and cull cows. I don’t know about you, but I smiled all the way to the bank after I shipped my culls and steers! Let’s all hope that the predictions for this coming fall are true and we can all capitalize on some record high prices again. Thank you to all of our customers who have supported our program in the past. Your interest in our breeding program means so much to us. I hope that we have some bulls in this catalogue that interest new and repeat customers alike, and we look forward to working with you to fill your bull battery needs. Please plan to come to Fisher Branch prior to sale day to view the bulls and have a herd tour. If you can’t make the trip, don’t hesitate to reach out to myself or Bohrson Marketing as they sorted through the bulls at the end of January. I will be happy to talk you through the offering and try to match you with the right bull(s) to advance your program. With sincere regards, Jennilee

SEMEN TESTING & SALE WEIGHTS

• Bulls will be semen tested, scrotal measured, palpated and inspected by a veterinarian. • Sale weights and semen test results will be posted on our website prior to sale day.

IN-HERD SEMEN COLLECTION

Rainbow River Simmentals reserves the right to collect semen on any bull sold through this sale. The semen collection will be at Rainbow River Simmentals’ expense and the buyer’s convenience. Any semen collected will be for Rainbow River Simmentals’ in-herd use only.

WEANING DATES

Bulls were weaned on September 8, 2023 using the quiet wean method.

HEALTH

All bulls have been on a total herd health program since birth. They have been vaccinated and treated with: • Pyramid FP5 + Presponse in February and at weaning • Tasvax 8 in February and May • Fermicon 7/Somnugen at weaning • Safe Guard oral paste at weaning • Ivermectin & Clean Up II for external parasites in June and November

NUTRITION

• Bulls have been developed on free choice alfalfa-grass haylage, millet silage and native grass hay. • A corn and oats based bull ration is limit fed daily. The bull ration contains a high quality mineral pack which includes vitamins and 100% chelated minerals. • 100% chelated mineral and blue salt are also fed free-choice. • Their diet has been formulated to balance protein, energy, vitamin and mineral intake as they develop throughout the fall and winter. The bull ration is limit fed daily to control concentrate intake and encourage forage intake, while promoting growth and longevity. • As we approach sale day, we gradually step our bulls off their bull ration, very slowly, over several weeks. We do this to gradually re-adapt our bulls to consuming a 100% forage diet. We realize that our bulls may not receive concentrate supplementation after delivery to our customers. If they do, great! But if not, our step-down approach prevents our bulls from falling apart due to abrupt changes in diet after delivery to our customers.

GESTATION LENGTH

• We use a 285 day gestation period. • The heritability of gestation length is moderately high. • Gestation length influences a calf’s BW and a cow’s calving interval. • All bulls have their gestation length specified in this catalogue, including embryo transfer (ET) calves. However, keep in mind that the age and genetics of the recipient dam could influence the ET calf’s gestation length, making it a potentially inaccurate indicator of the ET calf’s actual inherited gestation potential.

HOMO POLLED & COAT COLOUR

• All bulls have homo polled and coat colour results specified in this catalogue. • If their polled and coat colour status could not be determined through parentage, then DNA testing was performed to obtain their results. • “Homo” is short for Homozygous, i.e.) Homozygous Polled • “Hetero” is short for Heterozygous, i.e.) Heterozygous Polled • A red animal born out of two black parents will be diluter free. • A Diluter Carrier carries one dilution gene and one non-dilution gene. Diluter Carriers can pass either gene onto their progeny, therefore some calves may express a diluted coat colour while other calves have a normal coat colour. • If they do pass a dilution gene onto their progeny, a black calf will be diluted to grey and a dark red calf will be diluted to light red. • If they pass a non-dilution gene onto their progeny, a black calf will be black and a dark red calf will be dark red.

What do the results mean?

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE

WHY WE CHOOSE FARM GATE

1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS FarmGate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/ REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the RE GISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favourite lots or someone challenges your proxy bid, and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number. If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions, simply enter your user name and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.

With our bull sale increasing to a larger, 40+ head sale, we have contemplated different sale formats such as sticking with the Farm Gate Timed Auction, or reverting back to a live sale. After weighing our options, we still feel that the Farm Gate sale is our preferred method of selling. Here’s our top reasons why:

2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favourite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favourite list, you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity. 3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. For example, if the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you. But if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and manually bidding again, or moving your attention to a second lot of interest. 4. At closing time of the sale, the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In most cases, the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time, the computer will declare the sale finished. 5. Following the sale, the Owner or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale. Please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases. For more info and assistance with bidding contact any of the sale contacts listed on the DLMS website.

FAQ: WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to either continue bidding on one or more specific lots, or change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding. HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK? When we get to the close out end time, the clock for close extends by 5 minutes with any bid placed on any lot in the sale within that 5 minute window. This type of extended bidding turns the end time into more of a soft close. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and gives all bidders the same time to make a decision. If you get outbid on your first lot of interest during extended bidding, you can switch to bid on your second lot of interest if desired. Always follow the countdown clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.

1. NO SALE ORDER The racehorse style sale allows us to eliminate that dreaded sale order that causes so much stress on sale day! We have all been in that position where our #1 pick is listed after our #2 pick in the sale order. Decisions... decisions... do I risk not bidding on my #2 in order to wait to try on #1? We’ve all done it, and when our #1 choice goes way out of budget, we are kicking ourselves for not just buying #2 when we had the chance! With Farm Gate, all lots sell at the same time and you have the flexibilty to start bidding on your favorite lot, then switch to your #2 pick (or your #3, or #4, etc) if your #1 pick goes out of budget. This gives all of our customers the best chance at owning the right bull for their program. 2. MORE ONE-ON-ONE INTERACTION When I first started selling bulls, I sold via private treaty from our yard. My favorite part about private treaty sales was getting to know my customers on a more personal level. Learning about your program and individual preference in bulls in turn builds a closer relationship between the customer and myself, and also gives me the insight to recommend bulls that would be best suited for your program. This is especially valuable with sight unseen purchases. I found that when we switched to a live sale format, much of that one-on-one interaction was lost. Sale day was always such a blur and I really disliked not having enough time to talk to customers about their needs prior to the sale starting. Not all customers choose to interact directly with me prior to the sale with using Farm Gate either, and that’s perfectly ok! But I find that it does increase the amount of interaction between my customers and myself, which I really like. 3. BETTER FOR THE BULLS Less stress on the bulls is a major advantage of the online sale format. The bulls get to stay at home, in their environment, on familiar feed and don’t risk getting sick or injured while being moved or sorted for a live sale. Compared to live sales that take place off-farm, there is also no biosecurity risk with the bulls picking up an illness or disease that might exist at a public sale barn. Happier, healthier bulls are better for me, my bulls and my customers. 4. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK HAS BEEN POSITIVE The old saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies here. Covid forced us to start with the online Farm Gate sale, but we have received so much positive feedback since making the switch that we want to stick with a good thing! The flexibility to come view the bulls at your liesure, to bid from the comfort of your home (or while on the road, or at a meeting, a party or your kid’s hockey game) and even just the fun of the thrill when you never know if an opposing bid is going to give you that “You’ve Been Outbid” warning!

In the event that your conception rates of the purchased embryos do not meet the minimum guaranteed, notification of inadequate conception must be made to the seller within 120 days of implanting and proof of implanting will be required. This embryo guarantee expires after 120 days post-implanting. BREEDER GUARANTEE: All animals are sold under the standard terms and guarantees as set forth by the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA). The CSA Breeder Guarantee Guidelines can be found on the reverse side of any registration paper belonging to a bull or female registered with the CSA, or on the CSA website at www.simmental.com. At no time will the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of the animal. EXCEPTION TO BREEDER GUARANTEE: This guarantee does not cover death, injury, sickness or mismanagement. No guarantee is given that a bull’s semen will freeze. In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques (i.e. embryo transfer) after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. Animals cannot be returned to Rainbow River Simmentals if not in a sound, healthy condition. HEALTH: All animals have been on a total herd health program since birth. Specific details are available upon request. It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into their province or state. ACCIDENTS: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither Rainbow River Simmentals or any sales staff or Association assume any responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property. LIABILITIES: All persons attending the sale, or viewing cattle on-farm prior to the sale, do so at their own risk and the seller assumes no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents occurring in or about the premises. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS: The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller, and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction, and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.

OUR FARM

a little about us

AROUND HERE, COWS AND GRAIN GO HAND IN HAND In addition to our 160 head cow herd, we also farm 1000 acres of crop land. We grow canola, wheat, oats, peas and soybeans, plus timothy for forage seed. Dustin is the grain farmer in our operation, whereas Jennilee is the cattle lover. Together, we run a mixed farm that keeps us busy year round. Dustin manages everything related to the grain farm and Jennilee makes all of the everyday cattle related decisions. We bounce management ideas off one another and all major decisions for both sides of our farming operation are made jointly. We work together as a team througout our busy seasons of calving, breeding, seeding, haying and harvest, then divide and conquer more when it comes to equipment maintenance, spraying, field work, show and sale prep, and pasture checks. We currently run this farming operation by ourselves without any hired help. Add our 2.5 year old son into the mix and we are certainly kept on our toes! Pasture turn out and weaning by in large happen when a window opens up during seeding and harvest. If you ever drive by our pastures during the summer and see Jennilee doing backflips or cartwheels in front of the cattle, don’t be alarmed. She’s just trying to catch ears and picture the cattle by herself! After much begging and hounding, Dustin usually donates a few hours of his time on one sunny, late summer afternoon to help Jen picture the dams of the sale bulls or some donor cows before weaning. This usually happens after timothy seed harvest is wrapped up and before cereal crop harvest begins. We live a busy lifestyle by running a mixed farm, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. What a life we get to live by being our own bosses and making our living off the land and livestock! Our son gets to enjoy the fascinating world of agriculture at his fingertips every single day.

-Life is better on the farm -

HERD MANAGEMENT this is how we do it

FERTILITY, SOUNDNESS, EASY DOING ABILITY A short 50-day breeding season is utilized each year to insist on high fertility. Our main cow herd is solely fed forages and is not supplemented with grain at any point during the year. We expect our cows to maintain good body condition, rebreed early and raise a quality calf solely on forages and a strong mineral program. This management strategy helps us select for fertile, easy-fleshing cattle who thrive on forages. The herd is turned out to pasture around June 1 each spring. Our pastures consist mainly of established native grass, low lying slough and peat ground, and low-production, rugged bedrock ridges. Only a small percentage of acres at our home quarter include tame grass. This array of rugged landscapes is the reason we apply so much selection pressure on foot quality and soundness. Unsound cattle can’t handle the wet lowlands or rugged rock terrain of our environment. Likewise, hard doing cattle struggle to maintain body condition with the stresses of rough terrain, predators (coyotes, wolves, bears and cougars) and biting insect (mosquitoes, wood ticks, bulldogs, horse flies, black flies, among others) pressures that we experience here. Rotational grazing is used as much as possible to help maintain pasture quality, but wildlife pressures, rock and bedrock terrain eliminate rotational grazing as an option in 60% of our pasture acres. The herd grazes until snowfall prohibits grazing each year, coinciding with the herd coming home in mid-November or early December. Once at home, winter feeding begins with low quality round bale forage shred into windrows out on pasture. The herd walks to water to keep fit for calving. Three weeks before their expected due date, pregnant cows and heifers are moved into up-close pens and monitored more closely until they calve. Round bale forages such as millet silage, alfalfa-grass haylage, native grass hay and timothy straw are fed in bale rings in corrals from post-calving until pasture turn out.

OUR COW HERD

We recently purchased a proven donor for $42,500. She was a cow that we thought was truly special in every regard. In our minds, she was one of the most elite females to ever be offered for sale. A few months later, we discovered that she had a major flaw. A flaw that was not known to us at the time of sale. Her feet had started to change. It became evident that she had corkscrew claw. Despite that gut wrenching feeling of major loss and subsequent feeling of despair, we stuck to our guns. WE DID NOT FLUSH HER. WE DID NOT BREED HER.

WE CULLED HER. We don’t fool around when it comes to our cow herd. NO EXCEPTIONS.

SEMEN IS STORED AT BOW VALLEY GENETICS, AB MANDATE SONS SELL AS LOTS 2-9 (BLACK) and LOTS 34 & 35 (RED) Mandate - the $160,000 phenom from the final R Plus Simmentals bull sale - has proven his prepotency in his first calf crop. He is a calving ease sire who still adds good growth to his calves, consistently chops gestation, fixes feet, adds length of body and corrects structure. He really stamps his calves, they have docile dispositions and boy are they ever vigorous at birth! We have calved Mandate on heifers with success for two years now with zero issues. His CE and BW EPDs jumped by over 20% with the data entered from his first calf crop and I am confident they will only get better as time goes on. As evidenced by his sons in our offering and on offer by our syndicate partners, his sons are awfully good. I have a hunch, though, that his daughters might end up being his legacy. Mandate is an exclusive sire and this offering represents only the third time that we have offered his semen to the public. This is also the last chance to secure semen for the 2024 breeding season. Please note, the successful buyers will be expected to abide by our exclusivity agreement (details available on our website).

When Mandate’s first calves started hitting the ground last January, we had such high expectations. This bull got my blood pumping the moment I saw him dried off and on his feet. An absolute stud from day one, 38L has been my favorite Mandate bull all year. He is so correct in his structure and so attractive through his skull. He is a very close replica of his sire. He stands square and true on all fours and when you get a hind view, his bold, thick hind quarter and natural muscle shape is something to be admired. Without exaggeration, he is one of the best footed bulls I have bred to date. Absolutely impressive at the ground! Look to 38L to follow in his sire’s footsteps as a foot improver. We loved 38L so much last spring that we flushed his dam to Mandate to make more of his kind. His dam is a very feminine, correct, sound, deep bodied and nicely uddered 56U daughter that I purchased from Labatte Simmentals for $18,000. She put a good High Roller bull through our sale as a two year old and then raised one of our top bred heifers who is now working for our friends and valued repeat customer at MSE Land and Cattle. I anticipate big things to continue from this cow down the road and if I were you, I would expect the same from 38L going forward.

20L has been hot on the heels of Lot 2 in competition for being my favorite Mandate bull all year. They were neck and neck a few times last spring and over the summer, and I just think very highly of this bull in terms of what he has to offer. Another excellent footed Mandate bull that will be sure to improve foot quality in his offspring. I know I’m going to sound like a broken record when I talk about the feet in these Mandate sons, but they really do set the bar. This bull though, does he ever have a special dam and cow family behind him. The Tuitions are the best footed cow family in our program. All of them are perfect or near perfect footed, stemming back to the foundation cow, 6P, who lived a very long and productive life here. His dam and granddam in particular are very special cows in our herd. 25C raised my favorite heifer this year - a Mandate heifer, making her a 3/4 sister to 20L. Flip back to Lot 1 and look at Mandate’s support photos, she is pictured there (Tuition 17L). 20L’s dam has produced very well over the years putting multiple bulls through our sale and several top end heifers in our keeper pen. 3E is so structurally ideal starting with her big, square, perfect feet, ideal flex in her joints, her very nice and good milking udder, then exploding into her massive body type with so much squareness, capacity, softness and natural dimension. She is what I consider a model cow and is currently standing in my donor pen with a full brother to 20L at her side. If you’re looking for a bull to fix feet, correct structure, or build a pen of replacement heifers, 20L comes highly recommended.

Calving Ease. These Mandate bulls in general offer calving ease that is highly demanded by the commercial cattleman, but this one in particular offers a little bit more and will work on heifers. Note his small BW and short gestation - two key components to a good calving ease bull. His CE and BW EPDs are both ranked at the top 15% of the breed as well, and his dam and granddam have both been consistent at moderating BW in their calves. His dam is an ET daughter of our Blacksand Linette 823U donor and is proving to be a good producer. Her first calf is a two year old Impact daughter that is drop dead gorgeous and has one of my top heifer calves at her side. 54H is a very moderate framed cow with the signature tankiness, easy doing ability and square feet that run in the Linette cow family. Her flush brother sold two springs ago as a feature in our sale. I damn near kept that bull as a walking sire, and maybe should have. Now that Linette 823U is deceased I have a limited embryo inventory remaining, but she will go down as one of the best cows to ever walk here. As I already mentioned, Linette moderated BW in her calves no matter what bull I mated her to. She was a sight to behold with her massive rib shape, depth, tankiness and easy doing ability. All of her traits are stamped into this bull. I would expect 15L to calve easily and add some thickness, natural shape and capacity into his calves.

Calving Ease. These twin brothers would make a nice pair of bulls to run together in a breeding pasture. They are like peas in a pod and hard to tell apart without looking at their ear tags. They have the signature length, head, foot quality, correctness and overall stamp of the Mandate sire group. They are double bred calving ease with their dam being a daughter of Impact, the best calving ease bull that we’ve ever used. I think they’re going to calve better than their EPD’s suggest and I wouldn’t be afraid of using them on well-developed heifers. They just might prove to be fullfledged heifer safe for next year. 58F raised a really good bull as a two year old. She’s one of my favorite Impact daughters in the herd and goes back to a top cow, 78U.

Calving Ease. 42L is a 3/4 brother to Lot 4, also coming from our well-known Linette cow family. He is the heavyweight in the Mandate sire group and the 6th highest ranking bull amongst his contemporaries, but still offers enough calving ease to work on well-developed heifers and second calvers. He has a balanced set of EPDs, too. His dam is one of several good Riddler x Linette females that we produced over the years. Several sold to good purebred programs and we have two retained in-herd. They milk really well and are ideal sized cows with good length of body and rib shape. BW:

Lot 8: AT WEANING

Lot 8 is from the same cow family as Lot 3, backed by our excellent Tuition cow family. When the Bohrson crew was here in January, Cody Haney’s comment while examining this bull’s feet was “almost a perfect foot”. The term “perfect foot” doesn’t get thrown around too often, but this bull’s dam, 8Z defines what a perfect foot should look like even at 12 years of age. This bull will be a foot improver and he is also one of the biggest bulls in the offering so he will serve to add frame size, too. The extra frame is a consistent trait that 8Z stamps on all of her calves.

Calving Ease. Here is a very interesting heifer-safe prospect. Look at who his dam is, the $25,000 MAF Sabrina 89B who has produced more gorgeous daughters and impressive bulls than I can list in this footnote. 39L is the only embryo I got from Sabrina’s first flush to Mandate. Flip the page and check out her other ET sons as Lots 10, 11 and 12. 39L has pedigree to burn, super short gestation and small BW. Yes his EPDs don’t scream calving ease right now, but experience has taught me that the combination of his 86 lb BW, 7 day early gestation, and his build will out predict those EPDs any day. Mandate’s EPDs didn’t scream heifer safe when I bought him either, and he’s proving otherwise. Likewise, Impact definitely didn’t have heifer safe EPDs when I bought him, and after two calf crops he established himself as the best calving ease bull that I’ve ever used. The common denominator here is short gestation. Mandate’s gestation is only 280 days and Marlin told me that his dam always calved early. Short gestation is key to calving ease and I do believe it is bred into 39L. 39L’s short gestation isn’t a one off in the Mandate sire group. The Mandate’s come early almost every time and that’s why I’m confident that 39L will breed true. In fact, as I write this footnote, a recipient heifer just laid down and calved a full sib to 39L, unassisted, no problems and at 279 days gestation. I believe this bull belongs in a heifer pen and what a set of daughters he should produce! His good feet, quiet disposition and pedigree are the cherry on top!

Jackson, my favorite bull last year, fittingly named after my favorite Johnny Cash song! Jackson has been impressive his entire life. It wasn’t long after he was born that his presence and hip shape became pronounced and set him apart from the other calves on the farm. He would walk with swagger across the pasture all summer and caught the eye of everyone who toured here. He is halter broke and was set to be the anchor of our show string at Ag Ex this fall, until I fell sick just days before the show and had to scratch. Jackson is our only black son off of the $280,000 Walk The Line this year, and in my mind, Jackson is also the best WTL bull in the pen. Ignore his pedigree for a moment. In his own right, he is packed full of red meat with added length of body and capped off with that balanced structure that is always so eye appealing. He is strong skulled, ties into his shoulder nicely and just an all around good bull. Now add in the potency of his pedigree being a son out of the $25,000 Sabrina and backed by the maternal strength offered from WTL. Jackson is special!

Here are two flush brothers from Sabrina and the hottest black sire in existence right now. Caliber has established his name across breeds rapidly over the last two years. I wish I had got some heifers from these embryos last year because I think the maternal value in this cross is going to be outstanding! Lot 11 is the biggest framed bull in the pen and also one of the longest. His extra frame and length added up to extra BW, but if you’re looking for a power bull to add frame and not sacrifice muscle, depth or softness, take a good look at 75L. Lot 12 came with a more moderate BW and he is also more moderate in frame than his brother. He carries the same stamp of softness with excellent hair and very quiet disposition. 77L does have two small socks on his back feet. One sock is a few inches high and the other one only goes up about an inch or two.

Lots 13-15 are flush brothers from one of our up and coming donors. Tamale was a standout and feature in the Labatte Simmentals bull sale a few years ago. I fell in love with her softness, depth and capacity combined with such angularity, femininity and soundness. Excellent hair, excellent udder and excellent feet, phenotypically she was built just the way I like them. Her dam has been a next level producer and put many top bulls through the Labatte bull sale for Wade, plus two other daughters have sold for $14,750 to KT Ranches and $9,000 to Labatte’s. A female like Tamale puts it all together and I invested heavily to own her, paying $25,000 as an open heifer. However, before turning her into a donor, I insisted on turning her into a cow, so I bred her to Impact for her first calf which sold through this sale as a feature bull last year. She certainly earned her place in the donor pen with that bull, so we spent the year flushing Tamale and building an embryo inventory. These bulls are the outcome of her first flush and to say that I’m pleased with them would be an understatement. They are consistent, deep and stout, and possess all of Tamale’s best attributes, only solidified further by stacking the similar traits of Caliber onto hers. Wanting to build heavily on this cow, we implanted all of Tamale’s ......

All three have similar BW, similar performance (adj WW of 835 lb, 787 lb and 797 lb for 98L, 100L and 105L, respectively), and are similarly good. Take your pick or take all three. Calving Ease. Heifer bulls don’t come this special every day! Wow, what a bull, never mind a heifer bull! These Impacts continue to blow me away with their sheer quality year after year. This bull boasts the signature Impact stamp of great feet, great hair, great sogginess and thickness, great natural dimension and capacity, and of course Impact’s specialty... that curve bending performance and ultra short gestation. Check out the specs - 82 lbs at birth, born 6 days early, yet achieved an 824 lb WW at the beginning of September out of a first calf heifer plus a whopping 1337 lb adj YW ranking him #1 out of 19 contemporaries! If you like EPDs, he has those too and there’s a lot of green on his chart. Top 2% for CE, top 10% for BW and top 1% MCE then race up to the top of that big bell curve and check out the performance EPDs at the top 25% and top 10% for WW and YW. If that’s not enough, his indexes match as well with API at the top 30% and TI at the top 25%. Wait, it gets better. His dam is a direct daughter of the legendary WFL Red Sage 506C and the now deceased Walk This Way, also known as the sire of the $280,000 Walk The Line. 4L’s dam, 35J, is going to mature into a nice sized cow. She has good feet and a beautiful udder, tons of hair and is cranking it out of the park on round two this year with an outstanding Caliber bull calf at side. I think this cow is only just getting started and I’m excited for what she’s going to do for our program. I intend to freeze semen on 4L to utilize him in our own program.

Calving Ease. Another Impact bull with curve bending performance and a very easy going disposition. This bull is a calving ease option that will be suitable for second calvers and cows. If you have big, well-developed heifers, you could try him out on them if you so choose. He might prove to be full-fledged heifer safe down the road. He ranked #2 for WW and #3 for YW out of his contemporaries. 6L was a sight to behold alongside his little two year old dam last summer. Almost unbelieveably, 52J weaned 6L off at 80% of her own body weight... as a first calf heifer... AND rebred by AI for January. Wow! If only all of our first calvers could perform like that. Her second calf at side is a nice Caliber heifer that is looking very good. The granddam of this bull is a donor that I purchased from Spring Creek Simmentals a few falls ago. She was my pick of the cows when I toured that summer and lucky for me, Brian let me buy her. She has perfect feet and a very good udder, both of which have been passed down to 52J. She is also a direct daughter of the female maker, “All In”. 127C was flushed at Spring Creek and has also produced very well here, with her 2023 Mandate heifer being one of our high sellers this fall going to Cossette Simmentals in Quebec. 127C is on my list of donors to flush this spring. I wouldn’t mind if she could make me a few more daughters like the mother of this bull! 6L will make a nice all-around bull that will calve easy yet produce big steers and excellent daughters for your keeper pen.

Our third and final Impact son for this year’s sale is a high quality individual with a nice shot of chrome. Unlike his brothers, this Impact son is strictly a power bull as he inherited the extra jam that his dam passes onto her progeny. He has lots of natural thickness and muscle shape with a wide top and smooth shoulder. 88L showed a lot of masculinity early in life and was always one of the most impressive bulls from a young age. I would expect this bull to serve as a foot improver as the foot quality in these Impact’s is always good and his dam is an excellent footed Lotto daughter that is very sound. 130B is an ideal cow in many ways. She is a bigger, tanky made cow with all kinds of depth and capacity, and like all Lotto daughters, she milks very well with an udder that is still good for a 10 year old cow. She has produced many quality bulls and heifers over her years in production. It has crossed my mind to flush 130B, perhaps that will happen in the future. I’m still waiting for her to give me a daughter so I can build a cow family around her. 88L does have one small, partial sock on one hind foot. It is only an inch or two high and doesn’t quite wrap around the whole foot.

I quite like this bull. He’s so soft made and attractive through his lines yet carries adequate base width and thickness over his topline. He has a lovely coat of hair and a perfect blaze face ‘to boot. With his sire being the outcrossed Boone Pickens bull from the U.S., 21L offers a bit of a different twist to his pedigree. The dam of this bull is really, really impressing me early in production. This bull was her first solid effort and one I commend her for. She calved at the very end of December and has a jaw dropping Caliber heifer at side. That heifer is easily the most impressive calf on the farm right now! Everything about 1J is telling me that she is going to be a force in production. She comes from a stellar cow family which is the foundation black cow family that established the black Simmentals in my dad’s herd many years ago. The “Blackies” as we know them around here, are a very reliable cow family with excellent feet, udders and maternal abilities. Three Blackie females have been flushed over the years, including Wisdom 4W, her dam (76T) and her granddam (321N). Wisdom 4W only gave me two daughters over her 11 years in production, which ended due to a pelvic injury in 2020. I flushed her and even her ET calves were all bulls! But, the day that Wisdom 1G was born, I literally cried happy tears. I couldn’t have asked for a more special daughter to carry on the cow family because 1G is showing a lot of promise early on as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if both 1G and 1J find their way into my flush program down the road. Maternal absolutely matters when it comes to herd bulls, and this bull has a long line of special cows backing him.

Lots 20 and 21 are flush brothers that I purchased in some pregnant recipients from the Spring Creek dispersal. I purchased 6 pregnant recips that day, all carrying Blacksand Neva 89B ET pregnancies. A few falls ago when I bought a group of cows from Spring Creek by private treaty, Neva was at the top of my short list. I had examined her in the flesh and really liked her. Then I researched her production and the quality of the bulls that she raised over the years was very impressive, one of which, Springcreek Liner 37F, was utilized in the Spring Creek program. As bad luck would have it, Neva ended up being withdrawn from the sale offering and I never got to own her afterall. Needless to say, when the ET pregnancies of Estate x Neva were offered in the Spring Creek dispersal, I made sure to secure as many of those recips as possible. I had also seen Estate 58H, his flushmates and his dam, Abbey 99E, on pasture shortly before Estate 58H was weaned, and they were all impressive individuals. I felt that the combination of Estate x Neva was one that was going to work, and I am very pleased with the 6 ET calves that I ...

... have here. Three good heifers are in my replacement pen, all of which have blaze faces. I also got three bulls, two of which have blaze faces also. However, after much deliberation, I have decided to retain one of the bulls for our own use, and I am offering these two for your appraisal. These two bulls pattern very similarly, with very similar performance data and EPDs. They are both long, thick and soft made and are what I consider an ideal, moderate frame size. Both have equally good dispositions and good hair. Really, their only major difference is that Lot 20 is homo black with the chrome, whereas Lot 21 is hetero black. With Estate 58H being deceased and almost no semen inventory remaining, there won’t be many more chances to secure a son. There is some value in these bulls. You be the judge as to which one you like more. Better yet, buy them both and run them together with a set of cows. That would probably end up being a wise investment.

Here’s another set of flush brothers to lead off the red side of our offering. Their extra length of body is a consistent trait in the Walk The Line sire group. Lot 22 and 23 pattern very similarly with their balanced skeletal design, thickness, extra extension through their front third and necks tying high into their shoulders. Two very nicely put togther bulls that make a nice matched pair. Lot 24 is a little longer bodied, more rugged in his design and offers a notch more crest and more performance at this stage than the other two. The dam of these bulls came to me as a frozen embryo from Canadian Donors and is a full sister to the famous SVS Betts 808F. 37F has been a consistent, powerful producer. Her first calf, Sage 11H, really set the bar high and is a beautiful young female who we have also flushed. We are really excited about building on 11H and have several of her ET calves on the ground this year. Next up was the 50J bull who was a feature in his respective year, then in her third year, 37F gave me another impressive heifer, pictured alongside her dam in the photo to the right. After producing three top end calves plus milking with a very good, tightly suspended udder and maintaining excellent foot quality over the years, 37F earned her right into our donor program. These three bulls and their two sisters in my keeper pen are the result of her first flush and she is slated for her second flush, this time to Mandate, in April.

His dam is a flush sister to our Sage 37F donor and she really knows how to raise a calf. 33F puts her all into production and always brings in a heavy weight. 11L is another very long bodied, good haired, docile bull that will add payweight to his calves. He is one of the top performing bulls on offer, being ranked #5 for WW and #2 for YW. His pedigree is packed full of breed greats including some of the best donors in the breed. I should have named this bull freight train because he sure is long! How many extra ribs do you think 14L has? In an era where length of body has been dimishing in the Simmental breed, I think these WTL sons will be popular options for cattlemen wanting to add some stretch back into their cattle. 14L comes from one of our top red cow families. He is related to Lots 31 and 32, with his granddam being the dam of Lot 31. 14L’s young Tycoon dam has a show quality udder and her first calf was a good bull that sold through this sale last year.

This feature bull is one that you will appreciate more in the flesh than in his photo. Some bulls just aren’t photogenic, and evidently 83L is one of them. Even with a picture retake, we still didn’t manage to capture the true quality of this bull in his photo. Watch for his video or even better, come down to the farm to see him in the flesh. I purchased his dam for $19,000 in the Spring Creek dispersal. She is a beautiful young cow that we selected for her dark red colour, baldy face, impeccable udder, feminine design and maternal lineage. She has spent the past year in our flush program, with two sets of ET calves on the ground in 2024, including nine full sibs to 83L that will be arriving any day now. More embryos will be implanted this spring as we intend to build a cow family around 84H and hope to have some red baldy sons on offer in the future. 83L was handled a lot alongside his dam last year, which has turned him into a very quiet, easy to handle bull. Daughters should be really good from him and I would have very high expectations for their udder quality. 83L offers a nice moderate BW, good length of gestation, consistent growth ranking #2 for both WW and YW in his contemporary group, and an excellent set of EPDs right across the board. He does a lot of things right and has a lot to offer as a breeding bull.

Just recently, an ET son of Sprinkles won Reserve Champion Ranchers Choice Bull at the 2024 Canadian Bull Congress in Alberta. There are few donors capable of stamping their progeny as consistently as Sprinkles does. You can pick out her progeny from a mile away because they all have her stamp, almost to a tee. Sprinkles also stands on a very high quality foot that she consistently breeds on. 44L is her natural calf and you can see that he too carries her stamp. Maternal matters when it comes to herd bulls and it sure sets this bull apart from some others by having such a prepotent cow as his mother. Consistency will be bred into him. This cross with Reddington worked nice as it locked in softness, depth of rib and thickness. 44L’s two year old maternal brother sells as Lot 41.

Another nice Reddington son that has a useful set of numbers, a good dam and comes from one of my top cow families. The Belle cow family is probably the largest red cow family in my program, originating with the Vegas 9X cow who calved again in January at 14 years of age. Dark red colour is a trademark of the Belle’s as is functional feet and udders. They are problem free cows that get the job done well year after year. 85L’s dam, 8D, is a maternal sister to the dam of Lot 32, again, proving the strength of this cow family. 8D is very fertile and has always caught to her first AI service. She put a set of twin bulls through this sale last year, and her first calf was a bull that also sold through our sale in 2019. Otherwise, she’s been a female producer with two daughters retained in-herd and a feature daughter sold in our 2021 Online Production Sale to Judd Ag Ventures. These Reddington bulls are consistent in their type and kind, and you have to appreciate 85L for his depth, softness, thickness througout and sound structure. Reddington himself was a very good footed bull when we saw him as a yearling. Combine his foot quality with that of the Belle’s and 85L should have a solid foundation beneath him for years to come.

Tandem was special from the moment he was born, with an obvious “look” to him from the get-go. He was shown off on my Facebook page more than once as a baby and over the summer - he’s always been a bull that I’ve been excited about. There’s just so much good in him. From his dark red colour that is stacked generations deep to his cow family, his overall phenotype, performance data and those tremendous EPDs that are ranked at the top 15% or higher for 11 traits. Tandem was the top ranking bull in his contemporary group for both WW and YW, and I do believe he is the heavy weight in the pen at this point in time. Tandem is a very quiet bull and is very easy to handle as he was halter broke this fall with intentions to show him at Ag Ex in October. It was a sad day when I got sick right before the show and had to scratch because I was very much looking forward to promoting Tandem and Jackson (Lot 10). Take note that Tandem was raised by a first calf heifer who weaned off a 922 lb monster in her first year! 63J is obviously showing a lot of potential for the future and I would classify her as one of my best Tycoon daughters in production. Stacking the famous Rock 14X donor on the Belle cow family can only mean good things in terms of maternal merit. 14X is well known as the dam of KWA Red Mountain, KWA Law Maker, KWA Can-Am and KWA Shamrock, among others.

Calving Ease. 1L has been a very popular bull with anyone who has toured here since last summer. Always picked out from the group, he has a certain presence to him that people gravitate towards. I swear he’s even better in the flesh than in his photo, but you can see from his front angle photo just how square and true he stands on all four corners. For a heifer bull, he packs a lot of substance into his frame. He is long, thick and broad over his top, with an attractive head and clean neck that ties high into a smooth shoulder. Paint this bull any colour and he will still be the right kind, but his red blaze face sure adds to the equation! We used his sire, Can-Am, successfully on heifers for a couple years and we liked how he calved. 1L’s dam comes from a strong cow family, another one of my best maternal lines. The “Timely” cow family originated with a cow that I purchased from the KLC Simmentals dispersal in 2005 - KLC Miss Timely 105L. Show quality udders run three generations deep starting with the 4A cow, who interestingly enough, was a twin to a bull and ended up not being a freemartin! 16F is a top cow in our herd, always producing a high quality calf that stands at the top of our calf crop. Her 2023 born WTL heifer was our #1 most popular heifer picked out on pasture tours last summer. With that said, two of our most popular calves in 2023, including 1L, were from this cow family. That’s gotta tell you something! I recommend 1L for use in the heifer pen. He has very good performance to compliment his calving ease, plus a fantastic set of EPDs.

Calving Ease. This bull is a calving ease deluxe! Check out his numbers: wee 71 lb BW, 6 days early gestation, top 10% for CE and top 2% for BW. He is built for the heifer pen with his small head and nicely laid in shoulder. He’s another very structurally correct Mandate son who is well balanced, good at the ground and very quiet. The maternal strength backing 57L can’t get much better, either. His dam is a gorgeous Poker Face cow with a phenomenal udder that just doesn’t age. Her udder is as good now as it was 8 years ago. Classy has been a no-miss cow, always catching to her first AI service and calving in January. She is an excellent producer with three daughters retained in-herd over the years, two feature daughters sold to Swanz Ranch in Montana and Crooked Creek Farms, and her only son prior to 57L was a feature in our 2019 bull sale that sold to Randy Geisler. Classy gave me yet another heifer in January, a red WTL heifer that has what it takes to stand at the very top end of our heifer calves this year.

Calving Ease. This bull should work on heifers. He was born 8 days ahead of schedule, as was his dam, and came with a wee 82 lb BW. With short gestation being stacked generations deep between himself, his dam and his sire, I do believe that 82L will serve to chop gestation and therefore keep BW small also. He is a small framed bull that is stout made with extra thickness and good hair. His dam is also a small framed cow so I anticipate 82L staying a reasonable size for servicing heifers for years to come. Excellent foot quality runs generations deep in this bull as well. BW:

They calve like a dream and lock in the dark red colour at the same time. This one comes from a top cow family. His granddam, 19E, is one of my best producing red cows. I love my 67X cows in production. They are “A” and “B” cows that milk awesome with great udders and good feet that have stood the test of time. I recently secured some more 67X semen so I’m looking forward to using him more heavily again. Maternal and calving ease will be 70L’s specialty.

79L came to me in-dam when I purchased his mother for $17,500 at the R Plus dispersal. 1279J was my pick of the bred heifers, selected for her depth of body and capacity, fullness of heart girth, squareness through her hip and excellent udder development. The fact that she was a Venom daughter was also a major attraction. 1279J impressed me in her first year of production with her high level of fertility. It’s no easy feat for a two year old to change programs, raise her first calf and still cycle and rebreed early, but she did it. 1279J calved at the very end of December and has a very good WTL bull calf at side right now. 79L is sired by the exclusive calving ease sensation, Sochi, who bred very well in the R Plus program. I would expect 79L to calve very well on cows and second calvers, and I suspect he will breed that dark red colour into his calf crop. He offers an awesome set of numbers with a moderate BW, an adj WW of 832 lbs which ranked him #1 out of 22 comtemporaries, and he ranked #5 for YW. His EPDs are very useful with a lot of green across the board. The bonus is the mating flexibility that he offers with his outcross pedigree.

These Stratton sons are very consistent in their type and kind, very much possessing their sire’s stamp. 30L is a twin to another bull but his brother was culled due to an injury this summer. 30L is a small framed bull that will add sogginess and blaze faces to his calves. He does have 4 white socks but no white on his body other than what’s on his belly. 30L was a very early maturing bull, looking and acting like a herd bull at a young age. Our best kept secret of the 2023 bull sale season is Crush. I had purchased a pack of embryos for $3300 per egg from Rancier Farms at the NYR sale a few years ago. We ended up with two heifers and this bull. Crush was an intriguing calf from the beginning with so much width of top, a big, thick hip, great hair and a presence that demanded attention. His stoutness combined with such a nicely extended front end is a combination that is unique and harder to find in Simmental cattle today. His tremendous dam and being a direct descendant from the world-renowned Flirt cow family, plus being a son of the $150,000 Yuma and therefore a grandson of the powerful R Plus 3007A donor, amplified his potential as a herd bull. I liked his numbers and as he aged, his immense foot quality became apparent and really drew me in. He has big, square, excellent feet with ideal heel depth. The kind of foot that will handle a lot of years and a lot of miles, and I believe he will serve to be a foot improver. We decided to retain Crush for our own use last year. He was given a select group of cows, mainly recipient cows but also some purebreds that I felt might work well with him. His first calves are just starting to arrive with moderate BW and lots of length of body. They look good! The decision to offer Crush for sale this year was made mainly because I am walking three Yuma sons right now. Mandate being Mandate takes precedence, and the other bull is hopefully going to be my heifer bull, so Crush drew the short straw. We will retain some semen from Crush for in-herd use in the future.

A few years ago we decided to experiment with a late summer/ fall calving program. Last spring we decided to put those cows back into our spring program just to simplify our life for now, so Lots 42-44 will be the last extra-age bulls that we will have to offer for the foreseeable future. 102K is a big framed bull from a good cow family. His dam milked well but got culled due to injury this summer. His granddam is a top cow in our program and is the mother of Lot 34.

He has always been a stand out with his dark red colour, thickness and width of top. The Brandy cow family is top notch, 9B is hands down one of my best cows ever and I have deemed her flush worthy. Her cross with Tycoon has been a homerun twice now, and when I flush her I’ll probably flush her that way. This bull will calve easy and lock in the dark red colour for you. This is an ET son off our $25,000 Reeba donor and the only direct Reeba son on offer this year. The disposition of this bull is awesome. So quiet and well-mannered, he’s a gem to work with. He is a very complete bull with an ideal profile, softness and that signature, big, thick hind quarter that Reeba always stamps on her sons. He has a very useful set of numbers. Reeba is a tremendous cow that milks very well and always raises a quality calf. There is a lot of breeding value in this bull. I would expect an awesome set of sons and even better heifers.
