WELCOME On behalf of the Hadway Family we welcome you to the 18th Edition of a new revised WestwayBull Sale. As you can see we have changed up a few things in regard to the sale and the most significant change is our partnership with the Deeg Family. It is a transition step for both families to each have their own bull sale. We shared 17 awesome years of selling bulls together and these years were blessed with many great memories of raising our kids and growing our Simmental programs. For that, we are forever grateful and we sincerely thank Deeg’s for their partnership and friendship.

We have also changed the format of our bull sale having partnered with Olds Auction Mart (OAM) to present our sale on their timed on-line sale platform. Most of our bull customers are familiar with this site and if anyone needs assistance we encourage you to contact the OAM team or ourselves for more information.

With the uncertainty of Covid restrictions we decided to pursue an online format and we are excited to work with the OAM Team.

We are very excited about our 2021 offering and even though we have made some changes the one thing that hasn’t changed is the importance of customer satisfaction. We appreciate our bull customers and we build on our program by being very selective on choosing predictable genetics so that our customer can buy with confidence. Every year we strive to produce a consistent pen of bulls and we believe this is one of the most consistent group of bulls that we have raised to date. Westway’s focus is on raising bulls that have calving ease with moderate birthweights, while still maintaining performance to provide you a heavy weaning calf as an end result. Only 25% of the bulls born on the farm make the sale, therefore you are getting the Best of the Best. In order to make it to the final sale cut, the bulls must: have a low maintenance birth and start, have grown adequately on pasture, have performed on feed after weaning, and have good temperaments. As always, we stand behind our bulls 100% and are excited for this group’s future.

New this year, we have six purebred Black Angus bulls in the sale. We have been utilizing Angus genetics to enhance our Westcross program and these six bulls are impressive. They exhibit exceptional birth to growth numbers, are great haired, and are backed by tremendous cows.

Over the past three years we have started to finish our own cattle, some customer cattle, as well as other cattle sourced externally. We are grateful to be a part of the full cattle feeding

circle as it highlights the importance of genetics that will work for our bull customers. We want to see cattle that will gain adequately on feed and see successful finished results on the rail. We will continue to finish cattle here on the farm and we would be happy to work with our existing customers, as well as new customers, to purchase your calves come fall. Please make sure you let one of the Westway Farms contacts know when you will be looking to market your calves as we would love the opportunity to bid on them.

Please look over the offering and if possible we invite you to attend our Open House on March 2 or 3 at the Farm from 10am - 5pm each day. This will give you the opportunity to view the bulls in the comfort of their own familiar surroundings and the chance to discuss the offering and evaluate the bulls to see what bull is best suited for your own program. If you are unable to attend these dates remember the pens are always open for viewing so just call to make arrangements for a visit. A complimentary 10-day insurance policy will be applied to every bull in the sale following sale day. Bulls staying at the farm past the 10-day insurance period must be insured.

Westway Farms offers free delivery to central points in Western Canada. Any bulls picked up within 10 days of the sale will be given a $100 credit to your bull purchase(s). Bulls may be kept at the farm free of charge until May 1st. After May 1st, you will be charged $150 per month.

WFL BULL GUARANTEE Westway Farms stands behind their bulls and will ensure that customers are handled in a professional manner if an incident may occur. Please contact one of the Westway representatives immediately if there is any issue with your bull purchase as we can provide you with a bull to breed your cows. All animals will carry a standard breeding guarantee as specified by the Canadian Simmental Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchase price of the animals.

CATALOGUE INFORMATION The bulls are listed in the catalogue by age and are ordered oldest to youngest. The bulls will sell in the same order in the online close out as

under the standard terms and conditions as set forth by the Canadian Simmental Association, copies are available if needed. All bulls sell in their entirety, although Westway Farms reserves the right to collect semen on any bull that is offered in the sale for in herd use only. The semen collection will be at Westway’s expense, and the buyer’s convenience.

OPEN HOUSE As we move to a new format and have an online close out, we still want to take the time to visit with our customers and guests in a safe manner. Therefore, we will be hosting an Open House two days prior to the sale close out. The Westway crew will be available throughout the two days to tour you through the bulls and answer any questions you may have. There will be hospitality available that follows the current Alberta Health Services protocols and social distancing measures will be in effect.

If you are not able to make it to the Open House or have health concerns that may put you at risk in a public setting, we will make every effort to accommodate you so that you may view the bulls prior to the sale. the bulls. We will ensure that someone is able to tour you through the bulls and answer your questions.

There will also be a number of Customer draws for visitors that view the bulls prior to the sale. All names will be entered into the draw and the draw will be made on March 3rd. Prizes will include: Westway 2021 Bull Sale credits and other Sponsor prizes.

BULL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The bulls spend the summer out grazing while consuming nothing but their mother’s milk. The bulls only get creep feed for the last 20-30 days prior to weaning, familiarizing them with eating dry matter and the ability to eat on their own before weaning. The bulls are then weaned within the first two weeks of September where they get put on a high forage ration with very little added grain or energy. Once the bulls are through the weaning process their ration gets stepped up to a high protein, forage based ration.

The bulls are maintained on a high protein diet to enhance lean muscle development and maximize frame growth. The diet contains a high quality vitamin and chelated mineral package to boost their overall health and immunity. The bull’s overall diet is formulated to achieve a 3.0lbs ADG, allowing the bulls to show their true potential and ensure that longevity is a primary focus when growing. The bulls never have their feet trimmed before the sale and are semen tested by Didsbury Vet Clinic.

Welcome to the 2021 Westway Farms Bull Sale! All of the cattle at Westway Farms are on a complete herd health program and everyone at Didsbury Vet Services is proud to be able to partner with them as they work hard to bring you this outstanding group of bulls.

This herd health program for these bulls begins prior to even being born. All of the cows at Westway Farms receive a killed IBR/BVD vaccine, 8 way vaccine and Scour Bos 9 at preg check time in the fall as well as a topical Ivermectin for parasite control. This serves to maintain the overall health of all cattle present on the farm but also gets a headstart on the immunity of these bulls before they even hit the ground.

At birth, all calves receive Inforce 3 and Once PMH intranasally (IBR/PI3/BRSV and Mannheimia Haemolytica/ Pasteurella). This is followed by 2 doses of Bovi Shield Gold One Shot and Ultrabac 7 Somnubac (IBR/BRSV/BVD/PI3 and 7 way Clostridial plus Histophilus Somnus). These are administered between pasture turnout in the spring and

weaning in the fall. All sale bulls will have received 2 doses of Fusogard (footrot vaccine) as well, prior to leaving the farm after sale day. For parasite control, all calves receive a topical Ivermectin in the early fall and a topical Permethrin in the winter for lice control.

We will have completed a physical exam and semen evaluation of all bulls offered prior to sale day. Each bull will be assessed to determine soundness, excellent body condition score, and to be free of external visible defects. The semen evaluation includes physical palpation of the internal sex glands, testicles and epididymis and a visual exam of the penis during sample collection. A scrotal measurement is taken to ensure they are above minimum requirements for scrotal size. The semen is evaluated for motility and morphology and all bulls present at sale day will have received a passing grade above 70% or a decision deferred which means they will be reassessed and confirmed to pass prior to leaving the farm.
