The camellia, which originally came from Japan and China, is primarily known as a decorative plant in Europe. This genus of evergreen shrubs is in the tea plant family and includes about 300 species. With their characteristic luxurious flowers that resemble peonies, camellias have been known in Europe since the 16th century. Camellia japonica is the best-known species of camellia. It played an important role in tea ceremonies in China and Japan. Oil is obtained by cold-pressing the chestnut-like seeds of the camellia. This process retains important vitamins and other substances. Camellia oil is rich in fatty acids and palmitic acid, which facilitate rapid absorption into the skin.
