Greetings, dear audience,

Welcome to Serious Cupcakes! This program represents sheer creativity from multiple sources, created by seven artists who differ vastly in their approach to dance creation, but who hold the same goals in mind: to entertain and to move you. All seven choreographers have deep connections to BODYVOX.

Darvejon Jones: danced with us in main stage productions, taught for us, and presented his own concert on the BODYVOX stage. Now getting his Masters in New York, he approaches dance with a fervent appreciation for all forms and their roots.

Jenelle Gaerlan: started with us at age 12 in our JAG (Junior Artist Generator) program. She has danced with us and taught for us. She’s now based in San Francisco and approaches dance from a street-culture perspective.

Laure Redmond: compassion, joy, exuberance. From New York across the country to the West Coast. She’s the Pied Piper of improvisational fitness and health training.

Theresa Hanson: BODYVOX dancer, classically trained, jazz influenced, her work is emotional and finely crafted, mixing tenderness and melancholy with a familiar joy.

Bo Brinton: another BODYVOXer. The work, like the man, is elegant, understated, thoughtful, and finely honed.

Andrea Parson: danced with BODYVOX in our production NINETEEN*TWENTY. Powerful performer. Brings a sweet wit, humor, and irony to her choreography.

Bobby Fouther: singular artist operating in multiple mediums. With a vast knowledge of history and the migration of culture, he’s a storyteller that blends ballet with ever-evolving dances of the African diaspora.

There’s a place in Northwest Portland, a building where a company creates work, teaches dance in many forms, and supports artists in the pursuit of their craft. It’s also an opportunity, a proposition: that the well of creativity is bottomless, that we can uplift and inspire each other as we drink from that well together. The voice of the body is universal, and it yearns to be heard.

Let’s dance.

JAMEY HAMPTON has had a storied career in dance, theater, television, and film that has spanned five decades. Born in Portland, Oregon, he was a distinguished athlete in high school, receiving varsity letters in track and football, while also appearing in numerous theater productions. He attended Dartmouth College where he was a competitive ski racer, rugby player, as well as rowing stroke on the freshman crew team. Dartmouth was also where Jamey began dancing in earnest, meeting Pilobolus Dance Theater while pursuing a BFA degree in Theater. After Dartmouth, he danced with Pilobolus around the world for five years. He then helped form and danced with MOMIX from 1982-87, followed by ISO Dance from 1987-1995. Both MOMIX and ISO appeared on hundreds of stages around the world, in music videos, fashion shows, galas, workshops, and feature films.

In 1997, Jamey formed BODYVOX with his partner, Ashley Roland. Now in its 25th season, BODYVOX is a vibrant and singular dance company known to audiences worldwide for its ebullient and deeply imaginative work. Additionally, the BODYVOX Dance Center has become a hub for dance performance and education in Portland, attracting and enabling myriad artists in the dance field to study and pursue their craft.

In 1987, she formed ISO Dance with her partner Jamey Hampton. ISO toured the world for seven years with a robust schedule, which included choreography for international fashion shows, arena rock productions, videos and print ad campaigns. Ashley has collaborated with the preeminent dance photographer of our time, Lois Greenfield, on thousands of still images. She co-founded BODYVOX in 1997 with Jamey Hampton. Now in its 25th Season, BODYVOX reflects everything that Ashley is: endlessly creative and truly unique.

BIOGRAPHY PHOTOS BY MICHAEL SHAY, MUFFY KRUGER - POLARA STUDIO

Bobby Fouther, a multidisciplinary self-taught visual and performing artist, was born and raised in the NW as a second-generation Oregon artist. Inspired by everything from birth to death, his passions are painting, photography, dance theatre, and graphics. Over the past 50 years, Fouther’s time, talent, and treasures have been spent exploring the history of Black artists in Oregon and their influence on not only his life but the lives of fellow creatives. As a recipient of numerous awards like Spirit of Portland, Independent Spirit Award, and Lowenstein Trust Award, he learned that his personal and professional growth as a multidisciplinary artist and his self-taught exploration has not been in vain. As an Art Elder, he feels blessed to be a sought-after mentor and Art-tivist often asked to curate exhibits and to establish intergenerational arts programming for new and established galleries, community development corporations, and other agencies. He continues to mentor new and emerging artists in their exhibitions, art portfolios, and business of art. “Mister Bobby was and is not only a dancer but a total artist,” says fellow choreographer Ruby Burns. “He is able to conceive and create from costumes, choreography, music, and most importantly, develop dancers.” Choreographer Josie Moseley describes one of his primary attributes: “He had a welcoming way, a disarming radar that pulled people into his concentric circle. It was really wonderful to see a MAN like that.” Fouther has taught at Portland State University, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and BODYVOX; served on the curriculum development committees for the Portland Children’s Museum, the World Affairs Council of Oregon, Portland Public Schools, and White Bird Dance. He has also served as artist-in-residence in programs sponsored by the Oregon, Washington, and Idaho Arts Commissions and the National Endowment for the Arts, among many other credits. “Through it all, the most cherished and valuable power given to me by my mentor(s) was the wisdom to pass it on.”

JENELLE GAERLAN CHOREOGRAPHER

Jenelle Gaerlan is a multi-disciplined creative, freelance dancer, teacher, and choreographer from Portland, Oregon. Having trained in BODYVVOX’s Junior Artist Generator (JAG) program, Jenelle has done work for Nike Inc., DarVejon Jones Dance Ensemble, BODYVOX, Soulskin Dance, and the FRAY Show at Stanford Live, among others. Jenelle currently dances for Robert Moses’ KIN and is fascinated by the intersection of visual media and movement, and their implications within cultural practices. With expertise in dance, choreography, video production, design, and creative direction, she is now relocated in the Bay Area to build and connect with other multifaceted artists.

Since moving to the Bay Area in 2021, Jenelle has been sought out for her unique presence and movement profile from the dance communities of San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond. Having trained in different styles of jazz (authentic Black jazz, Luigi jazz, Bob Fosse’s jazz), contemporary, hip hop, and freestyle/improvisational practices, Jenelle’s perspective comes from a place of coexistence and interconnectivity between the array of techniques she has under her belt. More importantly, Jenelle brings with her the essence of Portland’s vernacular (street) dance community into her Bay Area endeavors, rooting her knowledge in house dance during related cyphers and battles. Also known as “JADU”, Jenelle has become a member of Assassins Crew (U.S. chapter based in Washington, D.C.) and proudly represents by setting the standard in her respective street/club dance communities along the West Coast. Jenelle currently teaches House Dance Foundations for Teens at the Alonzo King LINES Dance Center, and the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, CA. She has taught workshops at the late MVMNT Arts Academia in Albany, CA, Mark Sanchez (aka Hippie’s) Soul Movement Retreat, Rae Studios SF, and the University of San Francisco.

Darvejon, pronounced dar - vee - yawn, holds a BA in Dance with a minor degree in Japanese from San Francisco State University. He trained with Wendy Diamond, Ray Tadio, Dr. Albirda Rose, Linda Johnson, Kat Worthington, and Lee Wei Chao. Darvejon has performed works by Brenda Way, Kimi Okada, Oluyinka Akinjiola, Bobby Fouther (with Kemba Shannon), Tere Mathern, Ashley Roland & Jamey Hampton, Sara Parker, Heidi Duckler Dance NW, Christian von Howard, and José Limón.

Jones has taught young children creative movement at Casa Chapi in Chivay, Peru, Vancouver & Portland Public Schools, and BODYVOX. In addition to teaching eight sections of K-5th grade dance, Jones co-directed the dance program at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics with Jackie Sacks from 2016 to 2020. Jones has taught as an Adjunct Lecturer at Portland State University and as a guest artist at Reed College. His “Afro-Contemporary” class at BODYVOX was profiled in Portland Monthly Magazine as one of “7 dance classes to take right now.”

Darvejon is the father of a precocious 6-year-old, an MFA Candidate in Dance, and an Adjunct Lecturer at Hunter College, where he has taught Contemporary Dance, Dance History, Dance in Culture, African Diaspora Forms, Graduate Repertory, Hip Hop, and Improvisation. With his cohort Thomas Ford, Eleanor Smith, and Eto’o Tsana, he has presented at the 2022 Dance Studies Association. Jones is a Mellon Transformative Learning in the Humanities Scholar and a member of the Arts and Humanities Curriculum Committee and the Anti-Racist Committee. For more, visit darvejon.com

CHOREOGRAPHER

ANDREA PARSON CHOREOGRAPHER

Andrea began dancing in the late 1980’s to the country records played in her family living room and in her mother’s aerobics classes. At the age of three, she began studio dance training in Hillsboro, Oregon, where she learned the basics. She began choreographing at a young age, making dances for friends and family, and often improvised down grocery store aisles. With dreams of becoming a “serious dancer” she furthered her studies at the Joffrey Ballet, San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, and Loyola Marymount University, where she received a BA in dance in 2009. After graduating she joined Northwest Dance Project in Portland, Oregon, where she received a Princess Grace Dance Fellowship award in 2010. For 11 years she performed nationally and internationally, and choreographed contemporary dance works for the company and students. Andrea enjoyed dancing more dramatic roles such as Hedda Gabler and Carmen. A love of drama and storytelling led her to self produce three dance-theater pieces for live theater and film.

She’s currently in residence with the Portland-based organization, From the Ground Up, and recently created a new solo autobiographical work, You Can’t Be Serious, that blends dance and stand-up comedy. She teaches and choreographs throughout the greater Portland area and is also on faculty at Pacific University. You can spot her on instagram giving absurd mustache monologues, as well as walking her cat in the stroller.

Laure Redmond is a published author, dance teacher, television personality, and confidence coach. Laure’s work is dedicated to helping individuals realize their true potential through attention to mind, body, and spiritual principles and practices. Her trademark brand, Feel Good Naked, has been featured several times in O, The Oprah Magazine, on KATU TV, and VoiceAmerica Radio where she connects with a large community of people by bringing awareness to an array of personal, social, and cultural topics.

Laure has cultivated her craft, message, and mission for over 35 years, having started her career in New York City as a fitness coach to many high-profile celebrities. Her focus on the power of movement to boost health, self-esteem, and energy levels led her to produce a successful series of videos with Mary Tyler Moore. It was through Laure’s immersion in the fitness industry that she first came to understand body movement as a gateway to removing mental blocks, generating spiritual flow, and facilitating emotional healing.

Currently, Laure works with thousands of private coaching clients teaching them how to develop more positive mental frameworks while feeling more connected to themselves and others. She appears monthly on KATU with her Feel Good Friday TV segment, educating viewers on how to live with more joy, serenity, authenticity, and confidence. Laure also continues her commitment to nurturing and strengthening the body through her restorative movement classes called Stretch Appeal. These low-impact, high-energy classes combine inspirational music, light dance choreography and balance poses.
