Big enough to deliver, small enough to care.
There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will provide $22 billion in funding a year to an estimated 500,000 Australians aged under 65, who have a permanent and significant disability.
The NDIS’ central objective is for people with a disability to achieve their life goals, by providing reasonable & necessary supports to build skills & capacity so they can participate in the community and employment.
As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach investing in people with a disability early, to improve their outcomes later in life. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need.
The goals of the participant, whether short term or long term are at the center of the entire NDIS process. A referral to an Allied Health Professional is a necessary part of this process to identify the types of supports and skill development that is required.
The funding for these assessments is primarily found in the capacity building section of the participant’s NDIS plan. The recommendations and reports that are created from these referrals could be completed by a Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Dietitian, Speech Pathologist, Orthotist or Exercise Physiologist, depending on the particular situation.
