ristmas has been and gone, h and now we’re all faced with a brand new year, a fresh start and a chance to try something new.

As we unwind into 2022, pack away our decorations and eat the last of the Christmas chocolate, perhaps now is the perfect time to reflect on what we want to achieve this year and what’s really important to us.

One thing we should all take away from last year’s festivities is the importance of shopping locally and supporting Bodmin’s independent businesses and organisations. Try and make as much effort as possible to use the town’s shops, cafes, pubs, attractions and support local organisations. Take a look around you while you walk the old streets of Bodmin there’s so much to see. Let’s use this as one of our new year resolutions - to support our community.

Making Space for Nature The project benefiting wildlife and the community Volunteers planting bulbs

M

king Space for Nature, funded by a Cornwall Council as part of its green infrastructure for growth projects, is investing in three sites in Bodmin to benefit both local wildlife and the community.

Project adviser Charlotte Evans recently led a team of volunteers to plant 648 bulbs of bluebells, lily of the valley, winter aconite, wood anemone and wild garlic, either side of the path from Friary car park to Meadow Place, through one of the Burgage Plots. As the scheme continues, expect to see a glade, access steps and the planting of holly, hazel, spindle and blackthorn.

Charlotte’s second visit to Bodmin, to the Treningle Play Area, was for a community project to make a hibernaculum, housing many types of small wildlife. Unique signage was created by children from the estate, who have vowed to keep an eye on the hibernaculum while remembering not to disturb any of its winter residents.

Charlotte plans to involve the community in the development of the schemes with several events already having taken place and more planned over the coming months.

The route to the woodland

Here’s a run-down of the projects :

Burgage Plots A series of long, narrow plots behind the properties on Fore Street. The scheme respects the value of the woodland habitat for wildlife and 648 bluebells, lily of the valley, winter aconite, wood anemone and wild garlic were planted on either side of the path for spring. To find the woodland, follow the narrow path opposite the Market House Arcade, Fore Street, and go up the steps that take you right into the heart of the woodland.

Kinsman & Treningle The Treningle play area will have a hibernaculum, a cosy winter refuge for insects, toads and lizards, while the scheme at Kinsman is a great example of retrofitting biodiversity enhancements in dense landscapes, benefitting both wildlife and local residents.

Tredanek Meadow The scheme at Tredanek Meadow is transforming an area of low diversity amenity grass into a haven for wildlife and people, creating a wet-meadow on this seasonally damp site and planting a mix of trees native to Cornish river valleys alongside a mini-orchard and shrub beds providing community interest and habitat diversity.

Hire it, play it, like it, buy it!

A Bodmin boy’s musical and entrepreneurial story

T

r avelling to Bristol a couple of times a week during the Covid-19 pandemic, to collect food for those in need in Bodmin, gave Sam Lakey, 16, plenty of time to chat to his dad, John.

A keen musician, Sam wanted to help take away people’s lockdown blues through making music.

Aware of the limits on people’s purses, he also wanted to offer them the chance to try out an instrument before buying one, suggesting the family turn their textile store into a space for people to hire all kinds of instruments - and so Polyrhythm came into being at the corner of Bodmin’s arcade on Fore Street!

Sam knows that playing musical instruments is something that helps support good mental health and positive self-esteem. The set-up he’s created is now giving people of all ages the chance to enjoy playing music.

Understanding the huge commitment to take up an instrument when you have to teach yourself how to play it, and with lessons being a big expense, Sam’s aim is to reduce the risk involved in taking lessons by giving people a chance to borrow, for free, the instrument of their choice and hopes to see a growth in music within the community.

Instrument repairs is another Polyrhythm service. The repair team charge only the cost of the parts.

Sam really wants to play guitar professionally in a band. To help make his dream a reality, he goes to Bodmin College Sixth Form, where he is studying music BTEC, performance tech in staging and sound BTEC, both equivalent to A Level, as well as A Levels in physics and engineering. Sam can picture himself continuing with the community work he is currently doing with Polyrhythm alongside his professional musical career.

Polyrhythm’s volunteers and staff have grown over the past year or so. Alongside Sam are several

LOCAL NEWS << other young people, including Alfie Dawes and Tom Leather, Bex Adamson, Lucy Lakey, John Lakey, James Lakey, Colette Degiovanni and Allan Penford. They make an impressive and passionate team with a mission to grow music in Bodmin and beyond.

Now Sam’s plan is for Polyrhythm to go mobile - ‘Polyrhythm on Wheels’ – and have a presence at ten music festivals each year, rather than just a couple.

Sam said: “Festivals introduce young people to live musical performances. They have the chance to experience the music, by listening or participating in free music workshops. We set up a drum kit and racks of various instruments, such as ukulele, mandolin guitars and percussion and offer free tuition to anyone who wants to have a go. We’ve recently been at The Great Estate weekend and closer to home at Panda Fest in Lanivet. We encourage people to learn an instrument and hire it for free from us – Hire it. Play it. Like it. Buy it.

“We focus on the library aspect of our work, but customers can buy the instrument they have hired from us or we can order a similar one for them.”

Being in the centre of Bodmin and next to 'BodMAXX' allows the Polyrhythm team to enjoy free, fortnightly jamming sessions, giving an opportunity for the team to play music together and contributing to Sam’s desire to see the growth of people participating in music across the town and beyond

BodMAXX Taking Bodmin from Bod-minimum to Bod-maximum!

Bodmin Chamber of Commerce Building a stronger Bodmin through business, for the community

Some people remember 81b Fore Street as a retail outlet, but now it’s BodMAXX, a oneyear project including the studio space, funded

by Arts Council England and orchestrated by intoBodmin. It encourages Bodmin to move from Bod-minimum to Bod-maximum!

The hugely successful Halloween parade, which took place recently, followed the core values of intoBodmin: Community, Creativity and Collaboration. Other successes include the fortnightly music jam sessions with PolyRhythm, a window exhibition in partnership with Bodmin College, and a range of creative opportunities from VR drawing workshops to Christmas markets.

Bodmin Chamber is here to serve the local business community which has a diverse selection of types and sizes of business, all with different needs.

Projects for 2022 will be led by conversations with local people around creative opportunities in Bodmin, and there are some exciting plans afoot, although nothing is set in stone.

Some events coming up in the New Year include a tour of Cornwall Channel Studios with a live podcast on 17th January; a meeting between Bodmin businesses and Charles Campion from JTP Consultancy to discuss the revitalisation of the town centre at the Westberry Hotel on 21st February; and a tour of the Cornwall Stem Skills Centre at Callywith College on 21st March.

Lovers’ paradise Enjoy Valentine’s Day in Bodmin

We understand that making plans in 2022 is very different to how it would have been two or three years ago - and with Valentine’s Day coming up, couples may be considering different ways to celebrate the day of romance.

Covid-19 has seen us make changes in the way we do things, and planning a perfect night for Valentine’s Day (Monday, 14th February) is no different! We’ve put together some ideas for this year’s celebrations that you may even want to carry through to your regular date nights!

Picnic in the Park It’s still chilly at this time of year, but if you happen to have a dry day, why not grab your coats and gloves, a picnic blanket and a meal for two in a couple of tupperware boxes plus a bottle of prosecco, obviously - and head over to grab a spot in Priory Park, or your favourite public space in Bodmin?

Sharing a moment under the stars, or in the cold winter sun, is utterly romantic and a bit different to the usual date night! Make sure you take any rubbish home with you if you do visit a public space for your Valentine’s date.

Beach strolls Bodmin is ideally situated between the moor and coast, so why not head over to one of the nearby beaches with some cash in your pocket for fish and chips and a beer, and take a romantic, leisurely stroll? Cornish sea air and a newspaper-wrapped fish and chip meal is surely a wonderful way to share the day of love with your significant other before heading home, feeling refreshed and ready to cosy up by the fire.

A night in There’s nothing wrong with getting dressed up (or getting straight into your PJs) and staying in. Order some food, put on a movie and get the fire going. For a bit of fun, you could always try making your own romantic cocktails. A message from Revd Paul Holley Chair of Bodmin Way

Bodmin Way is planning ways to expand its support of the most vulnerable in our town and villages.

Thanks to Covid-related grants, we were able to increase our investment in activities for both young and old residents during 2021.

These activities included a weekly café and drop-in at St. Petroc’s Church, food and household supplies across the estates, a youth group in the parish centre, outdoor activities for children during the holidays, and support for schools. We plan to strengthen all of these for the long term, not just for the duration of the pandemic.

We shall deploy paid and voluntary staff to strengthen networks of community support to create a network of neighbourly care. We all like to talk about strengthening community, but it’s not easy to make this happen in a tangible way. That is our challenge.

If this idea appeals to you, let me know. None of us is an island, and none of us knows what will happen next. The more we do together, the stronger we shall be.

Spirit of Christmas Wishlist fulfilled

The sleigh was empty – now it’s full of brand new gifts for children given during the morning services at St Petroc’s, Lanivet Parish Church, St Meubred’s, St Stephen’s and St Hydroc’s on Gift Sunday and wrapped as Christmas presents by ‘elves’ at St Petroc’s Church.

The Bodmin Team Ministry had been asked for Christmas gifts for 76 boys and 31 girls between the ages of new-born and 18 for distribution by Bodmin Children’s and Families Social Services. The congregations’ donations not only fulfilled the wish list, they surpassed it by filling a huge bag of other gifts for women and children.

Trees Up Close The Queen’s Green Canopy

T

e first 12 tree saplings have h been planted in Bodmin’s new community woodland in Berryfields Park, with 400 more to be added in March.

More than 30 people came to watch the planting ceremony, led by focal minister at St Petroc’s Church, Barbara Brittain, among them Revd Paul Holley (Team Rector), David Bidgway (projects officer), Amanda Bright (community services officer) and Councillors Pat Rogerson, Jeremy Cooper and Phil Cooper.

Barbara Brittain said: “As partners with the town council, we are excited to be the first community group to plant our trees, a mix of purple beech from Bodmin Nursery and wild crab from the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery. Trees are the lungs of the earth. They provide habitat for wildlife and reach up to God. Trees are about the future; that’s why it’s great to see young people at the planting event today.”

In December 2014 Berryfields Community Centre Trustees (BDCC) were approached by Conservation Volunteers as part of the Big Tree Plant Project.

Bodmin Town Council supported the tree planting in the selected place as it fitted the council’s open spaces project. Tom David of Conservation Volunteers donated a selection of native woodland trees and a number of community organisations came together to plant 250 at Berryfields Community Centre.

Bodmin’s mayor, Jeremy Cooper, said: “This is a good initiative and an example of how community groups and the council work together to create great things for Bodmin.”

The first 12 trees were taken from the saplings potted at St Petroc’s Church during the recent community celebration of ‘Our Natural World’. Bodmin Town Council welcomed St Petroc’s Church’s request to plant 12 tree saplings in response to the Queen’s Green Canopy platinum jubilee appeal.

Bodmin’s deputy mayor, Phil Cooper, said: “Bodmin Town Council has been working hard behind the scenes to put everything in place in support of the Queen’s Green Canopy. I am delighted to participate and support St Petroc’s in planting the first of these trees. I encourage community groups and individuals to join us in creating a legacy through more tree planting events next year."

That’ll be the menopause…

Meet the group breaking the stigma

A

new support group for women going through the menopause has just been set up in Bodmin.

Annie Page and Debbie Warburton, co-founders of the group, are all too aware that women going through the menopause often need to take time out to talk about what they are experiencing.

Annie said: “So far it’s going really well. It’s hit a nerve with women in Bodmin. There’s been a lot of interest on our Facebook page ‘That’ll be the menopause’ and our first session was a huge success.”

There is no such thing as one size fits all when it comes to the menopause. As well as hot flushes and mood swings, it can bring confusion, forgetfulness, ‘mind fog’, insomnia, aches and pains and heart palpitations.

Some women sail through, but others have several symptoms that seem to gang up on them.

As symptoms and experiences were shared at the support group, the women began to realise they were not alone and what they experienced was totally ‘normal’. It serves as a space to pool ideas and hear what’s worked for others. www.bodminlife.com

A stigma still seems to be attached to the menopause and it is a taboo subject for some.

Assumptions and judgements may be cast on menopausal women in the workplace, forcing women to keep quiet about the life change they are going through due to the fear of being viewed differently and detrimentally. Debbie and Annie, local businesswomen, are determined that they can continue to perform equally well, despite experiencing symptoms of the menopause.

Debbie said: “I work even harder at my job now to ensure I play a full part in the success of the business.

“The NHS has produced working policies for menopausal women. If only these could be rolled out to all areas of work. Businesses need to adapt their working practices to get the best out of female employees going through the menopause.”

Annie added: “We see the importance of a support system outside the family – a place where women can tell each other the silly stuff that’s happened and empathise and laugh about it together.”

Giving the tools to change

Adie, who has been dancing since day one and attended Bodywork Company International in Cambridge, works for intoBodmin as well as leading her own projects, KBSK CIC and Breaking the Cycle.

ny of you may have recognised the cover star of a our very first issue as Adie Dove: dancer, leader, and an overall community hero. But there’s more to this talented and dedicated youth advocate than meets the eye.

Her work with both intoBodmin and her own companies sees her focusing a lot of time on the youth of Bodmin, encouraging them to put their energy into an activity that will benefit them - from dance to music production. She has also been selected as one of 16 women in the South West for the Women Leaders project, tackling inequality in leadership.

Breaking the Cycle is a record label for people who have a history of offending, giving them a chance to put this behind them and produce professional work with the mentorship of Adie and her team.

KBSK works in a similar way, encouraging children aged three to 18 to focus on music, dance and other creative pursuits, with Adie’s mentorship and support guiding them to become professionals in their own right, as well as benefiting their physical and mental health.

“Witnessing young people who have such little confidence and how much they grow is exactly why I do it,” Adie said. “It’s more than just dance, it teaches you how to stand with your head up and truly love yourself - it’s a support network.”

One thing Adie would love to see more of in Bodmin is additional youth work and for the town to be a safe space for young people. She would like to see more people from the community come together to support this.

She added: “You can make a difference and you can change the path of a young person’s life. You can’t change everything, but you can provide an opportunity. Some of the young people, if supported in the right way, can easily excel.

“It’s about equal respect. If people feel involved and listened to, they’re not going to damage something they’ve worked hard for when they feel part of a community. It’s about giving them the tools to change.” www.intobodmin.co.uk www.kbsk.co.uk

i th more than 25,000 online followers and reaching 100,000 people per month, Cornwall Channel - based just outside of Bodmin - is on a mission to deliver high quality video content and media services to optimise business growth.

Established in 2013 by Shane Solomon, with his talented crew, Cornwall Channel specialises in video production, live streaming and web shows, working with Cornish businesses so they can use filmed content on their own websites and social media platforms to further promote their work or services. SkillSHARE Boost your skills and confidence

F

inding an environment which nurtures existing skills and encourages new ones, while helping you to grow in confidence is something that can often be difficult to find, but thanks to a Bodmin initiative, people can have that chance to shine.

SkillSHARE is set up in 81a Fore Street (opposite Wetherspoons). It seeks to bring people together to share their skills and learn new ones, in a safe and supportive environment.

Open on Tuesday afternoons from 1 to 3pm, the skills shared have included flower arranging, crochet, poetry, card making, art production, drawing, colouring, wiring, cycle repair and pool table renovation. But the potential list is endless - it all depends on who comes and what they offer!

The project is already building a safe, positive, and life-affirming community which is open to everyone.

Bo, a participant, said: “I needed something that I could take positive steps towards getting myself better. My first step was being in a ‘safe’ place with people. I have also been able to support and sympathise with others.”

We’ve already seen an increase in people’s confidence, connectedness, wellbeing and life chances. The SkillSHARE community is rooted in the hope expressed in the Christian faith, and provides a safe place for people to gather, explore and grow.”

Open Event Success Prospective students discover outstanding education in Bodmin

On Saturday 13 November, hundreds of prospective students and their families flocked to Callywith College’s Open Day to discover more about the Ofsted Outstanding college.

Future students were given the opportunity to explore the state-of-the-art campus, meet the teaching staff and get first-hand experience of the College from current students.

The Open Day was a resounding success, with a high number of applications received on the day from students eager to join in September 2022.

As well as informative talks from the Principal, visitors enjoyed a variety of interactive activities and demonstrations and even had the opportunity to meet the College’s therapy dog Macy.

Prospective student, Max Champness, who attended the event and applied to study A Levels on the day, said: “It's amazing how it's such a step-up from secondary school. I’m looking forward to being treated more like an adult and being more independent.”

You don’t have to go far before you see a tre (homestead), penn (top, headland) or porth (cove, harbour). If you’re interested in learning about Cornish, why not visit Go Cornish at www.gocornish. org? It has everything to get started with phrases, apps and classes.

The name Chy Trevail means ‘Trevail House’. It probably refers to Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail, who designed St Lawrence’s. The name itself comes from a settlement name, first recorded around the 1300s in the parishes of Cubert, Ladock and Zennor. It translates as ‘homestead of Mael’1, a name meaning ‘prince, noble or chief’.

Important announcement for OUR community

An important event will be taking place in Bodmin this spring, allowing local residents to help shape the town centre.

Bodmin Town Team has announced a public consultation weekend, called a charrette, designed to give Bodmin residents the chance to say what they want Bodmin’s town centre to be like. JTP Architects have been commissioned

by Cornwall Council to facilitate a creative and inclusive event with workshops and walkabouts.

The Town Team, together with Bodmin Town Council, will then commission feasibility studies and an Action Plan based on the output and ideas from the charrette. This work will be funded by an award of £80,000 from the Cornwall Council Town Vitality Fund (TVF).

The Bodmin Town Team is a voluntary, community-led group tasked to build on the town’s existing strengths and to regenerate and improve the economic, social, and cultural vitality of Bodmin.

Youngsters welcome At Bodmin Junior Parkrun

Are your children looking for a new, fun activity this new year? The Bodmin junior parkrun could be just the thing for them!

With the community coming together to raise funds, find a course and recruiting an amazing team of volunteers, Bodmin’s junior parkrun was born!

Part of the global parkrun phenomenon, it’s a free 2K run for 4 to 14-yearolds that takes place every Sunday morning at 9am and involves running two loops around the field at Berrycoombe Vale and along part of the Camel Trail. There’s a warm-up at 8.50am and once the run is finished, a warming hot chocolate and some breakfast awaits at the end.

Booking is not required, just register at parkrun.co.uk then turn up with your barcode and have some fun!

At present there are just two junior parkruns in Cornwall, with Bodmin being the first and inspiring their friends at Par Track juniors to follow suit.

New volunteers are always needed and welcomed. No running is required from volunteers, just a sense of fun and loads of enthusiasm.

'Siu Yuk' Chinese Crispy Pork

BY HÔI-AN AT THE WESTBERRY Ingredients 2 pounds / 1 kg pork belly

●

2 tbsp / 30 ml Shaoxing rice wine ● ¼ cup / 75 gm coarse sea salt ● Groundnut oil ●

For the dry rub: ● 2 tsp / 10 gm salt ● 1 tsp / 5 gm Chinese five-spice powder ● 1 tsp / 5 gm brown sugar

METHOD 1. Place the pork in a pot, cover with cold water, and at a medium heat bring it to the boil.

2. Parboil the meat for 20 minutes or so, continually skimming off any scum that forms on the surface.

3. Put the pork in a colander to drain completely, let it cool down to room temperature, then densely prick the surface of the skin with a sharp fork.

4. Gently rub some Shaoxing rice wine all over the belly, allow it to soak in, then apply the dry rub evenly all over the meat portion of the belly, avoiding the skin.

5. Refrigerate the pork belly uncovered, skin-side up, for 12 – 24 hours.

6. Wrap the meat part of the pork in aluminium foil, leaving the skin exposed.

7. Spread some coarse sea salt evenly all over the skin, then roast the pork in the oven at 175oC for 45 minutes.

8. Remove the foil wrapping, scrape off the salt layer, place the pork skin side up on a rack and brush with a little groundnut or other light cooking oil.

9. Roast until the skin is crisp and covered with blisters (roughly 25 minutes), but prevent it from burning, which would otherwise spoil the taste.

10. Rest the meat for 10 minutes before serving, then slice the roast, skin-side down for ease of cutting, into approximately ½” / 10mm slices.

11. Serve with lightly poached Chinese leaf on a bed of plain boiled rice, accompanied by soya sauce and Chinese chilli oil if desired.
