Siena Art Gallery + Museum

In Siena, Italy, the Duomo di Siena has a portion that was never completed because of the Black Plague. The partially finished infrastructure is an eerily beautiful testament to another time.

We were asked to remedy this half-finished portion while simultaneously creating a new art gallery.

The dichotomy of new and old posed a complex problem of preservation and construction. I decided early on, that I would be as least intrusive as possible.

Early concepts focused on allowing the existing context to be the primary focus.

While researching Siena’s rich history, the importance of the subterranean layer became abundantly clear. There was sufficient evidence of cellars in neighboring buildings with indications of possible catacombs. For the sake of the project, we took this as factual and designed accordingly.

My design features various perforations that give the project a sense of permeability by allowing glimpses and light wells down to this lower level. At times, while traversing between the existing museum and the art gallery addition, those pathways become bridges over the cellar level.

My floor plan focuses on alignments to relate the existing buildings with mine. The pillars of the partially finished addition established a grid axis for which my structure sat upon. Alignments to the large existing singular wall that is a landmark within the city became my other axis. I then began to extrude aspects along this grid to further increase the permeability of the entire structure.

On each floor, there are individual spaces for art pieces and artifacts that require the individual to step into the space to experience it, similar to the chapels of cathedrals that were dedicated to individual saints.

The primary gallery space, itself, is a triple-story volume encased in glass that allows the texture of the surrounding buildings to shine. My addition recedes as the prominent wall rises up above the gallery space.

The project created a stark awareness of existing context and how to design originally while still paying homage to the immediate surroundings and historical character of a place.

As a precedent to the project, I was tasked with researching smallscale live-work spaces. One that particularly stood out was the Fire Lookout. These vocations require months of desolate life spent suspended far in the sky constantly looking for the first signs of a forest fire.

Specific focus was put on the tools that are unique to the job, but also those spaces and furniture which ultimately become multi-use.

I was asked to look to the year 2121 and define what this vocation would ultimately become. I wrote a narrative that told the story of the future and the new responsibilities that a Fire Lookout had 100 years in the future.

This project was not completely arbitrary, however, as I was then asked to place my design into a community that was created by the rest of the class. Each of us brought our worker who lived 100 years in the future and their new live-work structure. We then had to create a new community with roles and responsibilities that provided for each other.

One aspect of my design is its modularity. This firetower has the ability to grow and adapt as changes become necessary. Each firetower can have a sense of customization unique to the terrain and needs of the individual.

Compared to firetowers of old, a firetower in 2121 is much more open to the public. It serves in many ways as the first step to a connection with nature, allowing views of the surrounding mountainside.

Within the building exist three distinct modules, increasing in privacy with elevation. The first module serves as a visitor’s center, similar to that of a National Park.

From here, individuals can sign up for specific presentations that happen in the module above. The pitched floor of the second module is taken advantage of by becoming a presentation space. Fire Lookouts can engage with an audience by explaining the various intricacies of their job or showing some of the local wildlife. This space becomes versatile. The final module then serves as the living space for the Fire Lookout. The space has a kitchen and loft bedroom above.

It is one thing to design a building but quite another to consider the broader implications that placing a structure can have on a community.

Because of the sheer isolation that my vocation requires, it was difficult to establish my role within the community and how I could best serve those around me. Collectively, we struggled with all of the various relationships. This project helped create a broader awareness of the extensiveness of our effect on those around us.

Joppee Community Center

Joppee is now an incorporated community of Dallas, but it wasn’t always. Following the Emancipation Proclamation, now free men settled the town of Joppee and created a thriving community. Melissa Pierce, a local community member donated land and on it was built the only school to exist within the town.

Through years of decline and neglect, along with the school system being incorporated into Dallas, the Melissa Pierce School is now in a state of disrepair. The school represents an important cultural landmark in a community that has very few of those. At the time of its construction, it is believed that this was the only building in the community with plumbing that allowed for running water.

The school is an integral piece of the narrative that tells the history of Joppee.

I was asked to use the existing school and site to create a community center that offered multiple services. Upon speaking with community members, the list of desires was prolific, and truly handling the history of this place with the correct fragility it needed, was complex.

Inspections deemed everything but the roof to be structurally sound. By removing the roof, I saw the opportunity for sustainability and modernization that this created.

Drawing Planting Schedule

Joppee is a food desert; there are no grocery stores within the community at all in which to purchase food. Not only that but roadways to and from Joppee are rather slim. The town is boxed in by the Trinity River to the east and a Union Pacific railyard that is uncrossable by foot to the west. The south features a sizable highway that borders the community directly.

This leaves a singular bridge at the northernmost point of the community. This bridge crosses over the railyard and gives access to the rest of Dallas. This bridge, however, is not pedestrian-friendly, meaning the public bus system is the only means for some individuals to purchase food.

I have designed the site that the Melissa Pierce school sits on to be predominantly used for crops. With this design, along with a greenhouse, Joppee can begin to become self-sufficient. Necessary maintenance and care for these plants will also create a teaching opportunity for the youth of Joppee.

While designing the roof, I was able to use the roof to create a water collection system that would provide enough water to sustain the on-site crops I was suggesting.

This project focused on urban artifacts, those archetypes that do not see quite the audiences that it once did. They are monoliths in the urban landscape that served singular purposes. We concentrated on stadiums, malls, and movie theaters.

The class was separated into these groups and then directed to choose a specific site within the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex.

I chose the Golden Triangle Mall in Denton, TX. The project required that I design some form of housing on-site; besides that, we had complete creative freedom for redesigning the site.

The Golden Triangle Mall is a single-story mall that boasts 750,000 square feet. It is surrounded by a sea of parking lots. For a number of years now the mall has been underperforming for its size and location.

With the mall being a single-story structure, I began considering my housing going above. While this would allow a certain sense of separation from the retail space below, it would also create opportunities for multi-use spaces to exist.

I wanted there to be a sense of openness about the mall that was not currently there.

Early iterations focused on ideas of layers and how they begin to bleed into each other. I focused on bringing nature and green space into these layers as the integral negative space to my positive housing.

I removed much of the roof of the mall and many of the anchor stores.

I then proceeded to transfer existing roofs into green roofs and turn the lower levels into a large park.

The conical shape of the columns allowed for the maximum available walkable space on the ground level while widening to support the planes above. Peeling away the plane directly above the cone allowed sunlight into the mall and park below. My planes then related to the cones with a structural grid that compromised at the primary points of contact with the columns.

To create these layers, I needed an extensive structural system that could support the sheer weight. While this was possible, I also wanted to retain the sense of openness that allowed the design to breathe.

The housing planes are broken into 3 distinct planes layered at increasing heights. These separations would, in a sense, begin to create neighborhoods above the mall.

The housing derived its form from the interior curve of the conical column. The curved roof would allow natural light into the home while still retaining privacy.

The 4th plane sits at the highest point of the design. I wanted to take advantage of the space that now existed below the plane but still keep the same narrative of the housing above.

The motif of the housing continued in form but altered in function. It was now a light core that ran the entire height to the ground.

Surrounding the light core is 7 floors of multi-use office space that sit 2 stories above the ground. The light core houses elevators and stairs while transferring light to each of the floors. It also allows access from the ground level all the way to the surface of the 4th plane. The office buildings have a relatively small footprint because the office floors begin on the 3rd floor allowing the ground to continue as an open and walkable park.

This project was my first opportunity with working on the urban scale. It posed a myriad of issues that I had not previously encountered and overcoming those to create a holistic design with the intention of bettering someone’s life and establishing a community was challenging.

Working with a fellow student, we sought to create a better solution to modern housing, specifically that of starter homes. Our design was purposeful in creating safer solutions for these firsttime homeowners. The mobile home industry, while profitable, accounts for many deaths just from tornados alone. Mobile homes also depreciate in value at a rate starkly contrasting to the rest of the housing industry.

Harbor is modular-based, using predominantly prefabricated components. Customers are able to purchase the exact amount of square footage they need with the option for expansion in the future. The benefit of Harbor is the longevity and maintenance that even conventional housing is unable to compete with.

The business is capable of tighter profit margins because the model requires no inventory. By outsourcing components, the houses are then built at the rate of orders. This also means that there is an opportunity for a quicker break-even point and further growth.

With this submission, we won the top prize in the competition.

The Hip Pocket theatre sits on roughly 40 acres of rural countryside just outside of Ft. Worth. Working with another classmate, we sought to memorialize the history of the land with our piece. Referring to the motif of a Roman Triumphal Column, we used materials we found throughout the property to abstract this classical form. The entire piece sits at about 12 feet tall.

The squares that run vertically were once stage lights that have since been decommissioned. We oriented The Beacon along the primary axis of egress, requiring patrons to look at it as they leave.
