The Capital Live From the Desk: President’s Message
Marie Woods, President
Q4 2025 November
A Lesson in Connection and Purpose
Recently, I learned that a former colleague of mine - and a new ALA member - had passed away. I was stunned when I received the news.
In the spring, this colleague and dear friend reached out to invite me to lunch. We hadn’t spoken since before COVID - the common time marker for so many of us these days. During our lunch, she expressed her appreciation for my mentorship, sharing that my support had helped open new doors in her career. At her new firm, she had been promoted to office manager and was genuinely excited about the opportunity to grow in that role.
I encouraged her to join the ALA, explaining that membership provides access to exceptional educational programs, valuable mentoring opportunities, and a network of professionals — both Chapter members and business partners — who understand the challenges of our unique legal environment. She joined right away.
The last time I saw my friend was at the Toni K. Allen Scholarship Luncheon in July. She arrived near the end, but she wanted to be there — for me, for the Chapter, and for the scholarship recipient. I didn’t know then that she was battling a terminal illness. I only learned of her condition after her passing.

Since hearing the news, I’ve been reflecting deeply. Why didn’t she share her illness? Why did she join the Chapter knowing she might never fully benefit from the experience? Why was it so important for her to attend that luncheon, even as she grew weaker?
Perhaps the answers lie in what she valued most — connection, purpose, and gratitude
Too often, we take these things for granted. We miss opportunities because we don’t challenge ourselves. We avoid meeting new people because we tell ourselves we’re too busy. We withhold mentorship because
we underestimate someone’s potential. We skip educational sessions because a topic doesn’t immediately spark our interest.
To my fellow seasoned legal professionals, consider the power you hold to make a difference in someone’s life To whom much is given, much is required. We are privileged to work in this dynamic industry, surrounded by talented individuals and unique opportunities. But with that privilege comes a responsibility to give back – to share our knowledge, experience, and encouragement with others who are finding their way.
Chapter Member Anniversaries
Imagine what could happen if each of us took the time to connect, to listen, and to guide. The smallest conversation could inspire someone to grow, to persevere, or to believe in themselves.
I take comfort in knowing that I made time for that lunch – that I was able to spend one more afternoon with my friend, even as she was quietly saying goodbye. And I believe she rests in peace, knowing that she left a lasting reminder: every connection we make has meaning, and every moment we share can change a life.
We enjoy recognizing our member anniversaries. We thank them for their time and the commitment they have shown to the Chapter. We are grateful to have dedicated and loyal members like them!

Emmanuel is Vice President, Communications of the chapter.
HOW WERE YOU INTRODUCED TO ALA?
In my first law firm role as an HR Generalist, I was introduced to ALA by our CPO and the Secretarial Manager. They invited me to attend a Quarterly Networking Lunch (QNL), which was a great introduction to the chapter and piqued my curiosity.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO JOIN THE ASSOCIATION/CHAPTER?
I joined because it was offered by the firm. However, after attending the QNL event, I decided to participate in more events. It was during this time that I met Janeanne Gorman, who encouraged (perhaps voluntold) me to stay engaged, and her support inspired me to remain actively involved with the chapter.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF THIS CHAPTER?
I deeply value the genuine interactions and friendships I have built through ALA events, conferences, and even virtual calls. Each connection in its own way has shaped and added value to my personal and professional journey. Beyond the connections, I truly value the ease and opportunity to learn from fellow industry leaders, professionals, and business partners, who continually challenge me to grow.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW MEMBER TRYING TO MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR ASSOCIATION/CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP?
Be open and take advantage of volunteer opportunities and get involved in events. The best way to learn and grow within ALA is by showing up and being present.
PLEASE SHARE A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD AS PART OF OUR COMMUNITY
I remember attending one of the annual ALACC Wine Tasting events a few years ago with the simple plan to show up, say a few quick hellos, and head home. As fate would have it, I walked through the door as a barely active ALA member and before I knew it, I found myself back on the board.

What makes this moment so memorable is that I had been planning to slow down my involvement in ALA. Instead, that encounter became a turning point. Since that day, I have probably taken on more opportunities and experiences with the chapter than I ever expected, and it has been one of the most rewarding surprises of my professional journey since moving to the DMV area.
WHAT TRENDS OR CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN OUR INDUSTRY LATELY?
There are a number of trends and changes such as the role of AI in workplaces, remote/hybrid work changes (never ending conversation), increased education on mental health programs, and compliance requirements currently shaping our industry. However, the competition for skilled professionals and staff will push firms to adopt more creative benefit packages, stronger DEI commitments (a challenge in itself), and an emphasis on career development pathways as key differentiators. Particularly with the influence of recent and ongoing pay transparency laws, compensation alone is not enough to retain talent!
HOW
DO YOU SEE YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE ASSOCIATION/CHAPTER EVOLVING IN THE FUTURE?
I am open to all opportunities.
Whether serving on the board or in another capacity, my involvement is driven by my desire to see the association/chapter continue to thrive and share that growth and success with other professionals.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS?
Retirement by 50. Until then— growth, impact, and meaningful contributions in both my career and personal life.
SHARE A FUN FACT OR HOBBY THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU. At the time, where I was born was called the USSR.
WHAT BOOK, PODCAST, OR RESOURCE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO OTHER MEMBERS?
Smartless podcast.

Preparing for the Year Ahead: Law Firm Planning for 2026
By Ximena Brito, Senior Vice President | Legal Specialty, Pinnacle Financial Partners
As 2025 winds down, it’s the ideal time for corporate and full-service law firms to reflect, regroup, and prepare for a strong start to 2026. Year-end planning is more than a financial exercise — it’s a strategic opportunity to evaluate performance, strengthen client relationships, and ensure your firm’s financial foundation and banking strategy are positioned for stability and growth in the year ahead.
1. Review 2025 Performance
Before setting priorities for 2026, take a comprehensive look at how your firm performed this year:
` Which practice areas or clients delivered the strongest margins?
` Where did you face operational or staffing challenges?
` How closely did expenses align with your budget?
` Which initiatives generated measurable returns?
A data-driven year-end review helps surface trends and guide smarter decisions for 2026.
2. Strengthen Your Firm’s Financial Foundation — Banking Review for 2026
As your firm evolves, so should your financial strategy. The close of the year is the perfect opportunity to review your banking structure and ensure it supports your operational goals, trust account compliance, and long-term growth.
Key areas to evaluate:
1. Cash Flow and Liquidity: Does your firm have the working capital to manage partner draws, client disbursements, and growth initiatives?
2. Credit and Lending Facilities: Are your credit lines appropriately sized for 2026? Consider renegotiating terms ahead of the new year.
3. Deposit and Treasury Solutions: Optimize operating, reserve, and IOLTA accounts for efficiency, yield, and reconciliation transparency.
4. Merchant and Payment Systems: Ensure client payment platforms integrate with accounting systems and remain trust-compliant.
5. Banking Partnership: Is your bank providing strategic guidance, legal industry benchmarking, and proactive insights — or simply transactional service?
A strong banking relationship doesn’t just support operations
— it empowers growth. The right structure provides liquidity to invest in talent, technology, and expansion while maintaining financial discipline and control.
3. Set Strategic and Operational Goals for 2026
With your financial foundation in place, establish specific, measurable goals for the new year:
` Improve realization rates by 5–10%
` Expand services to targeted industry sectors
` Strengthen client experience and communication metrics
` Enhance lateral retention and associate engagement
` Improve capital and liquidity ratios
Realizing Potential in Every Dimension
Assign clear ownership and track progress quarterly to ensure accountability.
4. Reinvest in Technology, Talent, and Culture Technology, operational efficiency, and talent engagement remain central to profitability. Use this time to evaluate:
` Practice management and billing systems
` Data security and compliance protocols
` AI and automation opportunities
` Compensation, mentorship, and professional development programs
A motivated team supported by modern systems drives both profitability and client satisfaction.

Designing for Distinction: How Law Firms Can Turn the Office into a Showcase of Excellence and Impact
By Miller’s Supplies at Work
In today’s competitive legal landscape, image and performance go hand in hand. A law firm’s office is no longer just a place to review case files or meet clients, it’s a statement of excellence, discipline, and brand identity. From the first impression a client receives in the reception area to the quiet focus of an attorney’s workspace, design plays a powerful role in how

a firm operates, collaborates, and projects confidence.
The most successful law offices achieve a delicate balance: impressive sophistication paired with spaces that enable collaboration, focus and accomplishment. Kellogg, Hansen, Todd, Figel & Frederick, P.L.L.C, newly transformed Washington, D.C. headquarters is a powerful example of how thoughtful design can elevate both form and function.
THE DUAL MANDATE: IMAGE AND FUNCTION
Every law firm’s office must fulfill two essential goals. It must serve as a client-facing showpiece that conveys credibility, confidence, and discretion. And it must operate as a performance-driven environment where attorneys, paralegals, and support staff can focus, strategize, and collaborate. Clean architectural lines, timeless materials, and integrated technology are more than aesthetic
choices, they communicate a culture of order and precision. At the same time, comfort, flexibility and amenities help sustain energy, focus, and creativity over long hours. Achieving both requires alignment between design and the practical realities of legal work.
THREE PRINCIPLES FOR DESIGNING A LAW OFFICE THAT WORKS
Insights gained through the launch of new projects have led to these guiding principles, which any law office, large or boutique, can apply.
1. Design for Focus and Flexibility
Create an environment that supports both deep concentration and spontaneous collaboration. Sound-managed conference areas, quiet corners, and flexible meeting zones allow attorneys to transition smoothly between modes of work.
2. Invest in Quality and Craftsmanship
Finishes, furnishings, and materials convey your brand as much as your website or logo. Choose pieces built to last. This includes solid surfaces, well-engineered tables, and seating that balances comfort with presence. Quality never goes unnoticed.
Lighting, sightlines, technology integration, and even acoustics shape perception. A workspace that feels calm, confident, and efficient reinforces your firm’s credibility with every client interaction.
Behind every detail is collaboration. Working with partners who understand the unique demands of law-firm environments: confidentiality, scheduling, security, and precision — ensures your project runs as smoothly as your practice.
CASE IN POINT: THE KELLOGG HANSEN TRANSFORMATION
When Cushman & Wakefield
invited Miller’s Business Interiors to partner with the team working to reimagine the Kellogg Hansen office , the goal was clear: create a modern workspace that mirrored the firm’s reputation for excellence while supporting its complex day-to-day operations.
The project’s scope was ambitious—a full-scale, eightmonth renovation of multiple spaces, including a mock court room, multiple collaboration spaces, and a showcase conference room (construction, the firm’s attorneys continued their demanding caseload, meaning every installation, delivery, and design decision had to be executed around ongoing client work.

3. Plan Around Experience for Both Clients and Team
Every touchpoint matters.
Business Partner Spotlight (continued)
“Their cases didn’t stop for construction—so we made sure our work never interrupted theirs,” said Jeff Mulvihill, Account Manager at Miller’s.
The project required precise coordination among several partners: DCS Design, HITT Construction, Solutionsz for media and IT integration, and Fairfax Woodworking for custom millwork. Miller’s served as the connective link, aligning architectural intent with furniture that fit the budget, schedule, and design continuity. Early-morning deliveries, careful sequencing, and constant communication kept the firm fully operational while the transformation took shape. The finished result showcases not only design excellence but logistical mastery.
At the heart of the space sits a 240-inch Cambria quartztop conference table, built in partnership with Enwork The table, supported by only two custom-engineered bases, combines visual simplicity with mechanical ingenuity. Its quartz surface, precisely grainmatched and free of visible seams, serves as both a visual focal point and a statement of craftsmanship. Hidden beneath are fully integrated power, data, and media connections—ensuring the technology disappears, leaving nothing but clean, confident design.
“This table was an engineering feat—it had to look effortless while carrying a massive load,” noted Kevin Schneider, Enwork representative.
From the conference room to private offices and shared spaces, the environment reflects the same disciplined approach that defines Kellogg Hansen’s legal practice: deliberate, precise, and built to perform. Interested? Check out the video case study here
A SPACE THAT REFLECTS EXCELLENCE
A law firm’s workspace is more than its address, it’s a tangible reflection of its culture, its values, and the standards it upholds for clients. The Kellogg Hansen project stands as proof that when vision, craftsmanship, and coordination align, the result transcends aesthetics. It becomes a daily instrument of productivity, collaboration, and pride.
Dembo Jones team members have joined CLA.
“We’re proud to have helped create a workspace that elevates both performance and presence for such a respected client,” said Craig Church, Executive Vice President at Miller’s Business Interiors.
In the end, great offices—like great legal work—are defined by attention to detail. When every element is deliberate, your space becomes more than a place to work. It becomes a statement of excellence.

Hot Topics Review Cycles & Compensation Decisions
Performance reviews place significant demands on HR and organizational leaders alike. This period includes balancing thoughtful feedback, equitable assessments, and strategic workforce planning—all while navigating tight budgets and high employee expectations. In today’s environment, where inflation continues to shape compensation pressures and
the labor market remains fiercely competitive, leaders must focus on meaningful recognition and development opportunities that reinforce engagement and retention beyond compensation alone.
To remain competitive in this market, ALA Compensation and Benefits Survey is the most comprehensive law firm salary survey and benefits report that
ALA puts together annually. Data is further broken down by region, state and metro area, making it even easier to compare your firm against competitors. To order your 2025 Compensation Survey, click here

GLP-1 (Diabetes & Weight Loss Injections) Access and Coverage
With the increase in demand, employers are exploring ways to support employees using GLP-1 medications (such as Wegovy and Zepbound) for diabetes or obesity care, but don’t want to modify their pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) contracts. A growing solution is to layer supplemental GLP-1 programs
on top of existing plans. These programs focus on clinical oversight, lifestyle coaching, and medication navigation, helping employees access treatment safely and costeffectively while maintaining the employer’s current PBM structure and formulary. This approach allows employers
to offer meaningful support and predict costs, without renegotiating benefits or reopening vendor agreements.
Several companies offer programs that integrate with or exist alongside existing health plans to provide GLP-1 support. Ask your broker or benefits consultant for more details.
