During the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit, our opening keynote speaker dared us to think outside the box by embracing the question: “What if?” The concept became a theme of the Summit. When I took the stage to begin day two, I challenged our attendees to apply the “what if?” concept in terms of the mission of PWH®. Indeed, what if we created a culturally inclusive industry equally led by women? How would we do this?

The what if mindset resonated with another theme that emerged. Another speaker shared the value of being authentic by sharing our story. We each have a story because we all face unique challenges. Our story explains how we turned our challenges into accomplishments. Overcoming challenges is how we learn and grow in our careers. I shared my story of climbing the corporate lattice, starting in the mailroom at Owens & Minor and zig zagging my way to the VP position that I hold today. This is my story, and I didn’t know how to tell it for a long time. I didn’t know how to celebrate my accomplishments or my setbacks. Through the PWH® Mentoring Program, various PWH® educational events, and my PWH® connections, I have found my voice, and I celebrate my story. It hasn’t been a straight shot up, but I have learned three major lessons that I shared at the Summit:

> Move – Be prepared to make moves in your career, even when they may be sideways and backwards. After I shared my story, someone reminded me that the real lesson is not just to appreciate these three actions, but to also have the courage to never take no for an answer, to be a tenacious learner, and to be open to new ideas and opportunities. We would love to hear your story and the lessons you’ve learned while living it. If you have a hard time sharing your story, reach out and get a mentor, join a mentoring circle, find a webinar that helps, or join a networking event. PWH® is here to help. Before I close, I want to give a shout out once again to the PWH® Leadership Summit Committee. April Shomper, the committee chair, along with all the volunteers were incredible. Watching the Summit planning work come to life was amazing. I also want to thank our PWH® Leadership Summit Sponsors and our PWH® Corporate Partners. Together we are creating leaders in our industry and making strides toward greater diversity, equity and inclusion. Thank you.

There were many inspiring moments during the conference, and as I sit here writing my chair letter, I am energized to believe more than ever that we will bring the PWH® vision to life with the many members and associate members invested in leadership development for themselves and their teams.

Janis Dezso Wins 2022 Anne Eiting Klamar Award

Upon receiving the award, Dezso admitted, “I don’t like surprises.” She continued, “The women in this room who have held me up are the reason I got here.” She then encouraged attendees to take advantage of the generosity and commitment of PWH® members. “In this room, you can find a mentor to help you grow your career. All you have to do is ask.”

Julee Prefer, President of Preferred Solutions Inc., a PWH® Board Advisor and Past Chair of PWH® said, “Janis is a woman who has experienced significant growth in her career. She catapulted her career from an entry level position years ago to a senior position with global responsibility. Janis has always been willing to do whatever was required. She has always been determined, no task too big, no mountain too high. Janis has been a role model and mentor to all those around her. She is someone who is quick to support and raise others up. She is a leader that many would call a friend for her caring and generous ways. Janis is not only well respected by peers, subordinates and the industry but she has held many positions of leadership throughout the industry. She has been Chair of both PWH® and HMMC. She has held multiple positions of leadership within HIDA. Janis has gained great confidence along the way and is a well-respected business leader in the healthcare industry. She is an inspiration as well as a very accomplished leader and is more than deserving of this award.”

The Anne Eiting Klamar Leadership Award recognizes a woman who has experienced significant growth to become an accomplished leader in our industry. The recipient is a woman who has catapulted her career, scope of responsibility and professional development. She exudes confidence, integrity, and is well respected by the industry, her peers and her subordinates. She is committed to giving back and is a leader that others desire to follow and be mentored by.

We instantly hit it off together when we first met and have remained close friends and colleagues. The impact she has had on my career is immense. She was a founding member of PWH®, and she convinced me to join PWH® as a Charter Member. We have leaned on each other over the years maneuvering through our careers, having much in common with our jobs, our families and our customers. I am lucky to call her a friend, a trusted advisor and trusted mentor.”

Ashlee Rose Perez-Gerrie, Senior Communications Specialist, Premier Inc. What is your background? I have a background in graphic design, corporate marketing and account management. I have been with Premier for nine years. Right now, I am working in corporate communications. Why were you seeking a mentor? What was your goal? I signed up to become a mentee because I love networking and learning about different experiences. I hoped by starting a mentorship with someone new, I would be able to diversify my pool of knowledgeable experts that could help me grow personally and professionally. What have you learned from your mentor? With Cris’ expertise in so many areas, I have learned quite a bit. His experience being a manager and a member of PWH® for many years has given me insight and advice regarding potential next steps for my career, how to approach different scenarios, and how to leverage my people

This issue we spotlight mentee Ashlee Rose Perez-Gerrie and her mentor Cris Pellegrino. They both consider themselves laid-back and are thankful for the formal mentorship that PWH® helped them create. Still, but both agree, that informal, or formal, mentorships are extremely helpful.

Mentorship Keeps Your Career On-track

After cultivating their mentorship through phone calls, Cris and Ashlee got to meet in person at the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit, Mentor Meet Up Breakfast on May 17.

Mentor’s Perspective

What is your background, current company affiliation and position? I’ve now spent over 22 years in the industry, primarily managing relationships with distribution, GPO’s and national accounts. I just celebrated my 13th anniversary with Metrex and am Director of Distribution and Corporate Accounts. What inspires you to mentor? I’ve been blessed with many mentors, both formal and informal, in my career who I rely on for advice, to bounce ideas off of or some days just to keep my sanity! It’s helped me get to where I am and continue my career development. As a mentor, I hope that I can provide that back to Ashlee and other mentees. What have you learned from your Mentee?

It’s been great working with Ashlee as she gives me a perspective from a completely different role and background. I quickly saw her initiative, passion and drive for growth both personally and professionally, and she’s not afraid to ask for what she wants or more importantly, how to get there. Why has the relationship been successful? Despite our different roles, we hit it off and built trust with each other from the start. We have regular check-in’s scheduled where we are both engaged in the conversation around short- and longterm goals. We both have a high level of commitment to the relationship. What is your take on the value of mentorship? It can’t be understated, whether it’s in a formal role like Ashlee and I have established or an informal chat with a friend or colleague seeking advice: A mentor can help stay you on track and give you someone outside of your direct working relationship to help navigate situations from an outside perspective.

I think the mentoring program that PWH® provides to the industry is invaluable and encourage everyone to take advantage of it. How can PWH® members get involved in the PWH® Mentoring Program?

Visit: mypwh.org/mentoring skills and other talents within and without PWH®. I enjoy hearing his perspective on things, which broadens my level of understanding for how others can also perceive my actions and intentions, and I value his personal opinion as well.

Why has the relationship been successful? What has worked for us was having a set schedule every three weeks and then meeting in person at the PWH® Leadership Summit. It was great to interact on a more personal level, and it felt like we have known each other for years. We respect each other’s schedules and boundaries and rescheduled at times when needed. I think that our personalities are very similar and laid-back, and we are both passionate about our work and accomplishments. That helps our conversations flow naturally, and we often segue into the next topic of conversation easily. I think that we each value the other’s input, without imposing judgement or any type or letting our own experience diminish the other’s.

What is your take on the value of mentorship? For me, the value is knowledge. Reflecting on everything that I mentioned above, I think mentorship opens a door to help you know more about yourself and others. It enables you try new experiences you might not have encountered without the help of a mentor to guide you.

Attendees bemused these questions during meals, receptions, mentoring circles and interactive breakout sessions. Some highlighted sessions included opportunities to learn best practices for professional development from professional trainers and executive coaches, as well as industry veterans like Cathy Denning, Janis Dezso, Sue Hulsmeyer and Anne Eiting Klamar. Sessions featured topics such as motivating in virtual environments, presenting with executive presence, advocating for a seat at the table and managing up.

“It was so wonderful to celebrate all our personal and professional achievements together at this year’s Summit,” said PWH® Chair and Vice President of Industry Associations at Owens & Minor Vicky Lyle. “Thank you to all our attendees, our Summit Sponsors, amazing speakers and dedicated member volunteers who helped make the event so impactful and inspiring. I’d especially like to thank the PWH® Summit Committee, led by April Shomper, who also serves as Vizient’s Event Director.” Vizient sponsored our opening keynote speaker, Mike Rayburn, who demonstrated how asking what if can turn challenges into opportunities. Indeed, throughout the Summit, speakers and attendees appealed to the what if approach. Vicky Lyle asked, “What if we had a culturally inclusive healthcare industry equally led by women?” According to the latest research from McKinsey & Company, we would all be in a position for greater profitability. Joe Walsh of Supply Chain Sherpas asked, “What if the [healthcare] system perfectly delivered, even in a crisis?” Joe Machicote, Premier’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, challenged us to be more accountable by asking “What if we are the teammate who isn’t showing up for our company’s culture?”

It was so wonderful to be together in-person at our fourth annual PWH® Leadership Summit in Westminster, CO, May 16-18, 2022. The PWH® Leadership Summit is our industry’s only conference dedicated to diverse and inclusive leadership development. The Summit helps our organization drive the PWH® mission of creating a more diverse and inclusive healthcare industry equally led by women. Over 180 attendees enjoyed a variety of mentoring, education and networking sessions, as event speakers inspired us to step out of our comfort zones, embrace inclusion and connect!

During the final leadership panel entitled “Leading with Impact through Historical Change,” moderator Elizabeth Hilla, Senior Vice President of HIDA, picked back up on the what if theme. She asked industry leader panelists: “What if the pandemic never happened, what leadership lesson would you have missed and what have you gained because it did?” Here’s what they said:

Stephanie Muir, Chief Technology Officer of Midmark, provided clear steps for creating our life’s roadmap to success and reminded us it is never too late to plan our legacy. Naming our goals makes them clearer and adjusting to rocky terrain along the way helps realize goals faster.

> Amanda Chawla, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Vice President for Stanford Health Care, said, “Without the pandemic I don’t think I’d be as brave as I am today.”

> Joe Machicote, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer of Premier, inspired us to build an environment that sustains diversity and inclusion by recognizing and sharing our privileges. A commitment to showing up, being accountable and superior to our former selves helps everyone thrive.

Tuesday’s sessions ended with the powerful gender partnership Fireside Chat, “Better Together: Creating an Inclusive Environment”, moderated by Vizient’s Monica Davy, featuring an open and honest conversation with Owens & Minor’s Jeff Jochims and Brianna DillardDula. This critical discussion reminds us that if we don’t intentionally include, we unintentionally exclude. Attendees were challenged to create an inclusive environment where all voices can be heard and to use our privilege and positions to open windows of opportunity for diversity.

> Tina Murphy, Division President, Value Based Care for GHX, said, “I learned I can be an exceptional leader because I’m a woman and not despite the fact.”

Then embrace leadership preparedness by developing new skills (and stories) on our way to new summits.

Ashlee Gerrie, Recipient of the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit Scholarship

Aside from being the first major inperson event many of us have attended in two years, being at the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit and surrounded by hundreds of like-minded individuals, all striving to educate and connect with one another, felt natural. The educational sessions were well curated and impactful, with speakers often referring to a previous session in the day and using relevant comments from the audience to bring their lessons into our everyday lives. The networking dinners and cocktail hours provided some much-needed time to reflect on the activities from the day and create new relationships across varying organizations in the industry.

As a younger professional in the start of my career, I found it very valuable to sit at the table with professionals from all types of background and management levels, discussing what we value most in the workplace and how we can each improve it together. I 10/10 recommend attending this industry conference and look forward to connecting at the next event!

I have been a PWH ® member for a little over a year and attended the PWH ® conference in May for the first time. It was nothing short of amazing! I got to connect with the wonderful empowering men and women I’ve gotten to know through webinars and coffee chats, and even got some one-on-one and inperson time with my PWH® mentor, Cris Pelligrino, Director of Distribution and Corporate Accounts for Metrex Research.

This year’s Jana Quinn Inspiration Award recipient is no different. Rebecca Benga received several nominations, and all shared the same sentiment of overcoming challenges and continuing to lead her team through incredible changes. While seemingly simple, putting your feet up the wall is powerful. Just by being in an inversion (yes – this is an inversion!) the body has the opportunity to reset and remove stress. Most Yogi’s will tell you this pose is exclusively for meditative and restorative practice, but there have been plenty of instances where I have found myself answering emails or reviewing documents… all with my feet up a wall!

For the past two years I have had the honor of leading yoga sessions during the PWH® Leadership Summit and was beyond thrilled when asked to write a quarterly article for the PWH® Connect Journal. My goal is to offer you simple, practical advice that is easily incorporated into busy lives. I know what it’s like to finally make it to the hotel after a long travel and workday: fifteen emails behind, no clue what dinner looks like, and needing to check-in with your family. This is why I wanted to start this series with one of the easiest, yet effective poses you can literally do anywhere: Feet up the wall. If ever a pose was self-explanatory, this would be it: Lay down and put your feet up a wall. Getting into it may be a little awkward, but you are in good company—myself included! The goal is to get your seat as close to the wall as possible, but never force anything uncomfortable. If you need to bend your knees or be slightly away, that is fine… it’s part of the process!

Now, just sit…relax…and take some long, deep yoga breaths. I recommend starting with a few minutes, but ideal would be eight to ten minutes. After the time has ended, be sure to slowly come out of the pose. Your body and circulation will need to return to normal, which can take a few minutes. *( Note: feet up the wall is not recommended if you have severe neck or back conditions, glaucoma, uncontrolled blood pressure, or difficulty breathing. Always talk to your doctor before starting any exercise, including yoga.)

About six years ago I began practicing yoga and was certified in Vinyasa, a high intensity cardio-based yoga flow technique that will always be my first yoga love!

As 2022 is flying by. It’s been an exciting time to be part of the PWH® Technology Committee! We’ve made so much progress with our technology initiatives and are continuing to grow the momentum in many areas. As you may have noticed, last year we updated our website to kick-off a digital transformation for PWH®. This included investments in website-based technologies to manage data for member services. Now we are focused on making improvements internally, integrating technology within and among PWH® committees, and externally to improve members’ experience as they digitally engage with PWH®. Digital transformation can mean a lot of different things. As a volunteer organization, we are streamlining manual processes that can become automated through new digital tools. We are also dedicated to your member experience. We hope to personalize and customize more of our messaging to make sure you receive what is most relevant to you based on the company you work for, your department, job role, and other information you provide through your member profile. All this information helps us better serve you! So please, please, make sure your PWH® member profile is detailed and up to date. Below are steps to update your member profile through the PWH® website using a mobile device. Updating your profile using your laptop or desktop computer is similar. However, screen shots can vary depending on the size of the internet browser window you use. Keep an eye out for more digital transformation updates to come!

“Walk Slow” – The Virtue of Deliberate Decision-Making

> Sustainability is a key priority area for many healthcare suppliers and customers. This can be a mixed blessing as individuals try to make sense of a deluge of information regarding emissions, product compositions, waste impact and more. We are working to understand and share resources that will allow our industry to navigate these complex issues.

In the fall of 2020, I was managing a team of 15 individuals responsible for conducting a physical inventory count across a health system with 18 locations. In order to supervise a team working in different sections of a hospital, I found myself running from the materials department to the OR area to answer even basic questions from those I supervised. According to the step counter on my Apple Watch, I was walking the equivalent of a half marathon every day. I needed a new approach. I resolved to walk slower, at a normal pace, and let my team know I was on my way, and I would answer their questions when I got there. Over the following weeks, I would find that increasingly by the time I arrived, 10-15 minutes later, more and more often my team had already found a resolution to their original challenges. The lesson I learned during that project was that by slowing down and breaking up the work, we could involve more people in problem-solving, and we could accomplish more in the long term. That insight has guided me in my role as Program Manager for the Healthcare Supply Chain Collaborative at HIDA. We’ve focused on taking the big issues in supply chain resilience and breaking them down into their constituent pieces: Sustainability, Visibility and Contract Administration.

> On visibility, as we attempt to navigate unprecedented levels of shortages and backorders, many of the underlying issues are beyond our individual control. However, if we as an industry agree to common shared practices around allocations and demand management, we can work collaboratively to mitigate the impact of these disruptions.

> Best practices begin by including them in new contracts. This year, we are focusing on the contract creation process, developing standardized language in our contracts. This helps all partners have a better understanding of contract terms. This transparency builds trust between partner organizations. It was my great pleasure to attend the 2022 PWH ® Leadership Summit in May and meet in-person with so many dedicated professional women in our industry. One of the most persistent themes I encountered in conversations at PWH ® was how we are dealing with more challenges than ever before. Issues in our industry were magnified by the pandemic—global supply change disruptions, the needs of our customers, the risk of personal burnout. These issues will require systemic change as we build new processes in our postpandemic world. But by breaking them down into smaller more manageable pieces, we can work collaboratively and solve these challenges.
