FAU Study Shows Effects of Resistance Training in Older Adults at the Cellular Level

Aging involves a balance between oxidants and antioxidants, low-grade inflammation and a protein response that occurs at the cellular level, which is responsible for many health disorders.

Exercise has been shown to regulate the inflammatory response, balance oxidants such as free radicals that build up in the cells and damage DNA; and ameliorate the process by which cells protect themselves against these stressors. Furthermore, resistance training in older adults is recommended to help maintain muscle, flexibility and balance.

Aging and related diseases are associated with alterations in oxidative status and low-grade inflammation, as well as a decreased endoplasmic reticulum (ER) unfolded protein response (UPR). UPR is a functional mechanism by which cells attempt to protect themselves against ER stress, resulting from the accumulation of the unfolded/ misfolded proteins.

One group of proteins associated with the aging process is the mitochondrial heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), which has been demonstrated to play a protective role in the ability for cells to remain active and healthy. Currently, there is limited research investigating the effects of resistance training in older adults on the expression of HSP60

and Klotho, a gene involved in the aging process in mammals.

A new study by researchers at Florida Atlantic University, in collaboration with the University of León in Spain, examined whether an eight-week resistance training program would modulate the oxidative status, the UPR activation and key inflammatory pathways as well as their relationships with HSP60 and Klotho proteins.

For the study, researchers analyzed these proteins in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of elderly subjects. In addition, they utilized computer simulation to predict the key proteins associated with these biomolecules underlying physiological adaptations to exercise. They collected blood samples approximately five to six days before and after the training period and just before training intervention in young subjects who were included for basal assessments. Researchers also analyzed various oxidative stress biomarkers in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Results of the study, published in the journal Antioxidants , demonstrated that the levels of the inflammatory proteins (pIRAK1, TLR4, and TRAF6), as well as different markers of the redox balance (catalase, GSH, LP, NRF2, PC, ROS, SOD1, and SOD2) remained unchanged with training. Importantly, untrained elderly subjects

showed a significant reduction in pIRE1/ IRE1 ratio when compared to trained elderly subjects. Such a finding was further confirmed by a gene ontology analysis, showing that endoplasmic reticulum stress is a key mechanism modulated by IRE1. Additionally, analysis did not show the training effect on the expression of HSP60 and Klotho or their relationships with other outcome variables. Although elderly male and female subjects were included in the training program, researchers did not find any sex effects in the study. These findings might partially support the modulatory effect of resistance training on the endoplasmic reticulum in the elderly.

“Regular physical activity is suggested to be an effective intervention in improving age-related diseases such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia or muscle loss and dynapenia or loss of muscle strength, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes,” said Chun-Jung “Phil” Huang, Ph.D., co-author and a professor in the Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion within FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. “Although the beneficial effects of regular physical exercise to alleviate inflammation and oxidative stress are well-established, the processes of these physiological adaptations with regard to protein folding or UPR re-

mains to be explored. That is why we used a systems biology approach for our study.”

The resistance training protocol for the study consisted of 16 sessions over eight weeks (two sessions per week), with a minimum of 48 hours between sessions. The participants started with a 10-minute warmup on a cycle ergometer. Subsequently, eight different resistance exercises (leg press, ankle extension, bench press, leg extension, bicep curl, pec deck, high pulley traction, and dumbbell lateral lift) were performed using the exercise device. For each exercise, participants performed three sets of 12-8-12 repetitions. There was a two-to-three-minute rest between each repetition and a three-minute rest between each exercise.

“We know how very important physical activity is for older adults and our study takes research one step further in helping to elucidate the benefits of exercise in this population,” said Huang.

Study co-authors are senior author Brisamar Estébanez, Ph.D.; Marta Rivera-Viloria; and José A. de Paz, M.D., all with the University of León; José E. Vargas, Ph.D., Universidad Federal do Paraná, Curtiba; and Nishant P. Visavadiay, Ph.D.; and Andy V. Kahmoui, Ph.D., both with FAU’s Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion.

Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Launches Professional Women’s Jewish Collective

The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County has launched the Professional Women’s Jewish Collective, a networking initiative dedicated to bringing together women of all ages and backgrounds to nurture each other’s careers, provide peer support and encourage engagement in the community.

The PJWC provides space for meaningful connections, interactive programming, and authentic peer support for women in our community addressing the issues, challenges, and opportunities that come with balancing work, home, and self.

PJWC will bring together like-minded professional women of all ages in our community who want to help each other succeed in business, as well as make an impact through philanthropy.

The first speaker/facilitator will be Nanette Fridman, who will talk on “The Story of Your Personal Brand.” The event is tentatively scheduled from 6-8 p.m., February 23 at Interiors by Brown, 401 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton. The PJWC Series is sponsored by The Abbeys, Interior by Brown, Boca Raton Observer and Southern Glazers Wine and Spirits.

PJWC co-chairs are Lisa Friedman Clark, chief operating officer of

Tall Order, and Jill Poser-Kammet, founder and principal of Private Duty Home Care Concierge. Both live in Boca Raton.

“The PJWC was born from a shared space where a woman in business, with her own energy, can express her thoughts and ideas openly with a community of women that lift her up to become the best of herself personally and professionally. At the core, the Collective is comprised of a diverse group of successful Jewish women looking for meaningful connections. The experience is exhilarating,” Poser-Kammet said.

“After moving to Boca in 2020, it became immediately apparent to me that I didn’t have a local network of professional ‘fristers,’ or friends who are sisters. Couple that with all the nuances and challenges of starting my third career, a brand new family business, and you can understand why I jumped at the chance to chair PJWC,” said Friedman Clark.

The goal is to bring together the intergenerational workforce: woman from all ages and backgrounds to meet other women from all points in their careers.

POSITIVE LIVING

Don’t Miss Your Needed Check-Ups!

Life on earth is not permanent, neither is it easy while it lasts. Yet, every human dweller has the opportunity, and the obligation, of doing constructive things to help promote, preserve and improve life in its many dimensions.

Those who choose a wrong path, and operate without personal discipline, are bound to pay a heavy and undesirable price before their days are over. Yet, the very conclusion of one’s life on earth can be much more pleasurable and less painful, to the extent that certain basic directives are observed.

Just as we take care of our material possessions to continue enjoying and benefitting from them for a long time, our entire human make-up is capable of the

same, and demands even more!

There are necessary procedures applied to automobiles which need repairs to remain functional, that also apply to every human. Just as cars get out of alignment, and will operate more effectively and safely when proper care is provided, a human life also can easily get out of alignment, not merely in its physical aspect, but in every other angle of its functioning. It’s imperative that all the elements that constitute a human being can operate in harmony among themselves.

Every person’s spirit, mind and body must be well coordinated. Holistic living is imperative for the maximum functioning of any individual, with the best results not only for a single moment, but throughout

the entirety of life on earth. It’s the things that we do, as well as what we refrain from doing, that always counts for better or for worse in any life.

Just like one cannot abuse any machine and expect the best results from it, we need to cultivate our mind, our spirit, and deal generously with our bodies for the best we can enjoy and achieve. We cannot do well with one aspect and discard or forget the others. All facets of human life are inter-related, and the neglect or abuse of one, adversely affects all others.

Every life requires periodical tune-ups, and you need to know where to go to secure what can retain the best quality of life in all its dimensions, for optimum functioning for your own self, but also for the

benefit of others who depend on your being always at your best!

The time inevitably comes when every part of one’s life starts failing, every organ malfunctions. But no one should unnecessarily accelerate that inevitable impediment in one’s body, soul, or mind. With caution, be aware of what you should ingest or refrain from doing; be attentive to what goes in and out of your mind; don’t allow your spiritual self ever to be neglected without significantly adverse consequences both for here and the hereafter. You can improve the quality of your life, and maximize its use for your own satisfaction, and the benefit of others who can gain much from you being at your best!

One of the underestimated keys to business success is the ability to make a good impression on people we meet, especially those in positions of influence. And we all know the truth of the adage, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. So, if you had the opportunity, what individual would you like to impress?

Shifting from the realm of the marketplace, what do you think it would have taken to impress someone of the magnitude of Jesus Christ? He arguably has had more influence over people from every nation and culture than anyone else in history. Yet, in chapter 7 of the gospel of Luke we read about a man who caused Jesus to marvel. This is particularly notable because unlike Jesus, this leader was not even a Jew; instead, he was a Gentile, a Roman centurion.

This brief story tells us about a mil-

itary leader, an official who commanded hundreds, asking Jesus to heal his servant. In this centurion we see several qualities which can help each of us become better leaders, even in the often impersonal, even harsh business and professional world.

The leader’s deep compassion. In Luke 7:2, we read, “And a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die.”The first quality we discover is the officer’s compassion. We are told he regarded his slave highly and cared enough to pursue divine healing for him. This was extremely uncommon for that day, given the different standing of the two individuals, and very compassionate. How far would you go to care for each member of your team, including those who are under your authority?

The leader’s strategic wisdom. A second attribute about this centurion

that stands out is his strategic wisdom. He could have pleaded his case personally, or even tried to exert his official power to intimidate Jesus. Being a Gentile, however, this Roman leader suspected he would not have much sway over Jesus. Instead, Luke 7:3 states, “When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave.” This centurion wisely chose the Jewish leaders, people with a direct connection to Jesus, to ask on his behalf. Selecting the right people to represent you and your cause reveals strategic wisdom.

The leader’s courageous faith. The final attribute we see exhibited by this Roman centurion who asked Jesus to miraculously heal his servant is his courageous faith. He had obviously heard about Jesus and His miracles. Despite being a Gentile and not a Jew, basically an outsider to Jesus’ immediate sphere

of influence, the officer completely believed that Jesus could heal his servant. What is even more remarkable, he was also convinced that Jesus could command healing without even being present!

This is why in Luke 7:9 we are told, “Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, ‘I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.’” The centurion not only believed Jesus could restore his servant to health, but also that He could accomplish it by long distance.

The centurion’s act of intercession showed that nothing – serious illness, cultural differences or distance – could deter his faith in Jesus’ healing ministry. In a similar way, we should all pray that our faith in Jesus remains strong enough to overcome whatever obstacles and business problems come our way.

DAILY BREAD

Set Goals, Formulate Plans–And Pray

Since we are early in the year, some of us might still be in the process of setting goals for 2023. These can take many forms, both long-term and short-term, but I have always found it helpful to establish clear, measurable, attainable goals to begin the year. They give me something to strive toward. As someone has said, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” So, goals serve as a useful target.

Goals help us answer the question, “Where am I going?” But the next question is, “How am I going to get there?” For some, it requires taking overarching goals and formulating objectives and plans for attaining them. Recently, I was facing a major project that seemed daunting. To relieve some of my stress and anxiety about completing it, I broke it down into smaller objectives and laid out plans for meeting them.

Perhaps your approach is somewhat different from mine, but I have found that one important element is often ignored, overlooked, or forgotten in the goal setting and planning process. That element is prayer.

What does prayer have to do with it? Don’t we reserve prayer as a last resort, kind of a “when all else fails” option? I have learned that rather than waiting for a crisis to occur, praying in advance – as part of my preparation process – is much more effective. If we pray, what should we pray for? There are many things, but here are some suggestions from the Scriptures:

Pray for wisdom. Often in setting goals, I have reasoned, “I know what I need to do and how to get there.” However, sometimes unexpected challenges arise. Or I might not know the best way to accomplish what I am setting out to do. And at times I discover that God has better ideas than I do. So, praying for wisdom in advance can actually be a shortcut. “If

any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

Pray for direction and guidance. In setting goals and making plans, it can be wise not only to ask what we intend to do but also why we want to do it. Are our motives right? Are our goals and plans designed for our personal gratification – or to honor God? Therefore, our prayers can help to ensure we are going the right ways and for the right reasons. “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun” (Psalm 37:4-5). “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Pray for God’s blessing. To enter a building, it is easier to turn the knob and open the door than to try breaking it down. In a similar manner, prayer enables us to commit what we desire to accomplish to God and ask Him to bless our endeavors if they align with His will. “Therefore, I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted to you” (Mark 11:24).

Pray for others. Our prayers often focus on ourselves, but prayer can make us more aware to the needs of others around us. How better to represent Christ than to demonstrate sincere concern for others? “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4).

Boca Raton loses Beloved philanthropist Yvonne S. Boice-Zucaro

BOCA RATON—It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Yvonne S. Boice-Zucaro, peacefully at her home in Boca Raton on Friday, January 13, 2023.

Yvonne was a pillar of the Boca Raton community. The depths of her loss will be felt by all those who loved her, the countless organizations she served, and the people whose lives were transformed by her mentorship and support.

Yvonne was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on September 6, 1937, and graduated from New York University with a BS degree in Marketing. She was married to real estate executive Grant Boice, and the couple moved to Boca Raton in 1983. His sudden passing shortly after left Yvonne with the tremendous task of running the newly developed Shoppes at Village Pointe. Through her innate business acumen, she nurtured the fledgling 77,000-squarefoot retail and restaurant center into a thriving business, while simultaneously running her passion project, Fugazy International Travel.

After establishing herself as a business leader, Yvonne made her mark in the philanthropic arena–championing arts, culture, education, and women’s rights initiatives. Honing her passion at the local level, she then created a presence on national and international stages, becoming an invaluable guiding

force for charitable organizations and an inspiring advocate for women in business.

Yvonne’s remarkable ability to mentor women was recognized by the State Department, and she was selected to represent the United States at four high-profile women’s international business conferences.

Karen Hughes, the Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, chose Yvonne as one of six delegates to the MENA (Middle East and North African) Women’s Conference held in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. Paula Dobriansky, the Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, appointed Yvonne to attend the Global Summit of Women in Berlin and the Global Summit of Women in Hanoi. Yvonne also traveled to Santa Cruz, Bolivia to speak to an audience of indigenous women. Yvonne encouraged them to create their own small businesses and take political action.

Supporting the arts was another ardent endeavor of Yvonne’s. Her years producing the galas for Palm Beach International Film Festival shone a global spotlight on our community. She was also a tremendous force in the creation of the Centre of the Arts in Boca Raton and was an appointee to the Palm Beach County Film and Television Commission. On a national level, Yvonne was the chair for the 50th

Anniversary Celebration of the National Endowment of the Humanities, and she served as a dedicated board member for the Trust of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Al were married in 2009 during a glorious 3-day event held at the Boca Raton Resort (The Boca Raton).

Yvonne is survived by Al Zucaro and her beautiful daughter Lauren (with her late husband Grant). Lauren is a practicing attorney in Boston, who is married to world-renowned astrophysicist, Dr. Randall Knowles Smith.

“A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” James Keller

Education was also a major focus of Yvonne’s philanthropic work. She served on the Palm Beach State College Foundation Board and chaired the college’s highly successful STEAM scholarship events, which were acclaimed for their ingeniously creative motifs, which Yvonne designed to complement the career of each year’s guest speaker.

Yvonne’s dedication to Lynn University began when she furnished scholarships to support international travel for students. She staunchly believed that experiencing other cultures was essential for personal growth and should be an essential part of a well-rounded education. Yvonne herself was a famously fervent globe trotter, having visited over 160 countries!

Yvonne’s relationship with Lynn University flourished into other areas of support, including her development and endowment of the iconic Circle of Flags at the entrance to the University. Most recently, her generous contributions to Lynn funded the Boice-Zucaro International Programs & Services.

This dedication to excellence in education resulted in Yvonne receiving three honorary Doctorate degrees bestowed upon her from Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire; Daemen College in Buffalo, New York; and Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.

Yvonne has also been honored with numerous prestigious awards, many of which will be on display during the celebration of life.

While Yvonne was passionate about her philanthropic work, she was most fulfi lled spending time with her love, Al Zucaro, an attorney and founder of the World Trade Center of Palm Beach. Yvonne and

How To Choose the Best Weight Loss Plan for Your 2023 Goals

It’s that time of year again when many Americans make the resolution to lose weight and start a healthier routine. This year in particular, with the pandemic largely behind us, many Americans will once again focus on their health.

In fact, 64% of Americans are motivated to lose weight because they know it has an impact on their immunity, according to a recent poll of 2,000 U.S. adults aged 30 and above. And 61% also now realize that a healthy diet and lifestyle can better protect their longterm health.

So what should you look for when it comes to a weight loss plan? Courtney McCormick, MPH, RDN, LDN, corporate dietitian at Nutrisystem, offers these tips to help you choose a program that’s right for you.

Keep it Simple: Let’s face it, in our crazy busy world, we have to make hundreds of decisions a day, often at lightning speed. You shouldn’t have to worry about counting points or measuring foods. Look for a plan that’s easy and convenient, and does the work for you.

Focus on Protein: Protein is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and a key to weight loss. Protein helps with satiety, so it’s important to include some in each meal and snack. Look for plans with high-protein options, like Nutrisystem’s new premium meals, which include up to 30 grams in each meal and keep you full for up to five hours.

Look for Value: As prices contin -

ue to rise at grocery stores nationwide, many people are struggling to find affordable options that can help them eat healthier and lose weight. However, those options do exist. Look for plans that are cost-effective and deliver the majority of meals right to your door.

Don’t Give Up Your Favorite Meals: Look for a plan that lets you eat your favorite foods. Losing weight doesn’t

have to mean giving up the things you love. Weight loss plans like Nutrisystem offer comfort foods made healthier that are perfectly portioned so you can enjoy them without any guilt. Plus, the plan also offers dessert for those who have a sweet tooth.

Seek Support: Achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself is so much easier when you have a support system. The best people to have on your team when you’re trying to lose excess weight are those who sit down at daily meals with you. Even better, your chances of reaching and maintaining your weight loss goal increase dramatically if another person in your household joins you on the journey. Look for plans that offer options for both you and your partner to get healthier together.

Remember, your weight loss goals will be more than achievable this year if you follow the right plan for you. Look for a program designed to help you succeed.

5 Tips to Jump Start Your Weight Loss Post-Pandemic

With the New Year right around the corner, new survey results suggest that 2023 will finally be the year that Americans bring their health back into focus.

According to a recent poll of 2,000 U.S. adults aged 30 and above commissioned by Nutrisystem and conducted by OnePoll, two in three Americans credit the past two years with teaching them how important their health really is. And 71% believe the pandemic has taught them to be more observant of their health. The poll also revealed that two-thirds of Americans said weight loss is a “top health goal” for them over the next year.

However, for many, losing weight can seem like a difficult task. The truth of the matter is it doesn’t have to be. Courtney McCormick, corporate dietitian at Nutrisystem, offers the following tips to help you take that step toward a healthier you.

1.

Keep healthy food in sight

Having healthy food at arm’s reach can make losing weight easier. A Cornell study found that women who kept a bowl of fruit where they could see it weighed an average of 13 pounds less than those who didn’t. Plans like Nu -

trisystem deliver healthy, portion-controlled options right to your door, making it even simpler to make good choices.

2. Give yourself a bedtime

Children aren’t the only ones who need a bedtime! Adults need a set bedtime as well to be productive the next day. Setting a certain bedtime and sticking to it will also help your body get the

rest that it needs to burn stubborn fat. “Not having a good night’s rest can lead to craving sugar and fatty foods, which can also lead to weight gain,” says McCormick.

3. Work out in 10-minute sets

If you’re short on time or have back-to-back meetings, working out in intervals of 10 minutes three times a day creates more flexibility in your busy

schedule. Doing this creates long-term healthy habits that will help you lose and maintain weight.

4. Drink more water

What’s not to love about water? It’s hydrating and keeps your body healthy. Water aids digestive health, regulates body temperature and even aids in losing weight and maintaining the weight loss. This is because water helps you stay full between meals and avoid unnecessary snacking. In fact, feeling hungry is often a sign that you’re actually thirsty and it’s time to get hydrated.

5. Forgive a slip-up

Mistakes can actually help you understand what is healthy for your body. Having a slip-up allows you to consider the progress you’re making in your weight loss journey and be able to hold yourself accountable when making future healthy decisions.

There is no better time than now to focus on your overall health and wellness goals. When you are geared with the tools to succeed, living a healthier lifestyle is easily achievable.

Daughter continues mom’s legacy at Palm Beach State College

When Isabella Henderson started taking classes at PBSC, she was confident she would get a great education. That’s because Henderson was following in the footsteps of her mother, Paula McLeod, who not only shared with her the benefits of attending, but that the College would offer her a great path to a university like it did for her.

McLeod, the vice president of major gifts at the United Way of Palm Beach County, and Henderson, who is pursuing an Associate in Science degree in Human Services, are an example of the many alumni legacies being built within families at PBSC.

McLeod enrolled at Palm Beach State from 1991 – 93 because she saw the benefits of staying local. She later transferred to Palm Beach Atlantic University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications.

Both institutions provided her with a solid educational foundation that launched her career as a nonprofit and community relations professional.

Today, she is currently responsible for designing, implementing and sustaining successful fundraising programs and more for the United Way and has an extensive history of fundraising, managing events, creating public relations and marketing campaigns for companies such as Baptist Health South Florida, Bethesda Health and Florida Power & Light.

Her journey started in high school, where McLeod helped take care of her grandmother who lived in their home. In addition, her mother was going through cancer.

“There was a lot to deal with, so it was really helpful to my parents that I was still here to help out while in college, said McLeod.

McLeod’s mother also couldn’t help her fill out a lot of college applications due to her illness. She was able to get the help she needed, however, after visiting the PBSC admissions office that was close by.

While on campus, McLeod remembered

seeing a lot of people she knew from high school, which she found comforting as she adapted to a new environment.

“My mom always spoke very highly of PBSC,” said Henderson, a full-time nanny to six children. “This made me more confident in my choice to attend.”

McLeod also shared with her daughter that some of her best memories happened at PBSC. One of which came when she met her speech professor, Arthur “Art” Musto, a retired Hollywood actor.

“He was an amazing teacher and encouraged me to get involved in theatre classes,” said McLeod.

She took his advice, made friends quickly and acted in a play titled “Look Homeward Angel.”

“That was such a special performance to be a part of because it was part of the College’s 60th anniversary celebration, and two former alumni who had starred in it previously came back to play their parts again.”

Like her mom, Henderson is also enjoying her experience at PBSC and says she feels like she is surrounded by a great support group.

“I’ve had a great advisor and some really great professors who have pushed me to make it through some of my tougher classes.”

McLeod also sees her daughter on campus. They both recently attended the PBSC and YMCA of the Palm Beaches ribbon cutting ceremony in Lake Worth. McLeod was invited because the United Way supports the YMCA and Henderson was on campus at the time.

“Even though she lives locally, she is very busy so it’s always nice when I get the chance to see her,” McLeod said.

McLeod and Henderson also say they love having the shared experience of attending the same college and continuing the family legacy.

Brightline+ Partners with Uber

Brightline and Uber, today, announce a new partnership that will make getting around South Florida seamless and convenient. The new collaboration will offer guests a familiar rideshare option integrated within Brightline’s app, making it easier to get to and from all of Brightline’s five South Florida stations. The partnership is designed to meet customer demand and enhance Brightline+, a mobility service that already includes airport shuttles, event shuttles and electric golf carts.

Brightline+ was launched in 2021 to make it easier for guests to access Brightline stations and their final destinations. The service has received rapid adoption with nearly one-third of Brightline riders using the service. A partnership with Uber will expand Brightline+’s fleet of mobility options and offer access to unlimited vehicles at an affordable rate. The partnership represents the first time Uber has linked directly to an intercity higher-speed rail service in the United States.

“It is critical to our guest experience that access to our stations is convenient and seamless,” said Patrick Goddard, president of Brightline. “This partnership meets our guests’ preferences and demands by unlocking an online fleet of vehicles to provide a door-to-door service when using Brightline.”

“Through this partnership with Brightline, Uber continues our work in complementing mass transportation and expanding transportation access in South Florida,” said Dmitriy Vanchugov, Head of Partner-

ships for Transit, Uber. “By making Uber easily available to Brightline users, we can together bridge first and last-mile gaps and bring shared mobility options under one roof, making it more convenient and accessible for customers.”

Starting today, guests can add private or shared Uber rides when booking a train ticket all within the Brightline app or website. This new in-app booking capability is designed to eliminate guest wait times and ensure a ride is ready and waiting curbside to take them to their final destination. PREMIUM guests will receive complimentary rides within a five mile radius, while guests in SMART can add a ride to and from the station for a fee – without distance restrictions.

Brightline+ fixed-route and EV shuttles will continue to offer convenient walkup rides. Brightline+ fixed-route shuttles connect guests to Miami International Airport, destinations in Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport. Brightline+ continues to provide event shuttles and electric golf carts to top attractions in close proximity to its stations.

As Lynn University celebrates its 60th anniversary as one of the most innovative and diverse colleges in America, the university looks back to reminisce on its aviation history in South Florida.

In 2017, Lynn University’s Burton D. Morgan School of Aeronautics became its own college— the Burton D. Morgan College of Aeronautics—after operating for decades within the College of Business and Management. Before the university marked this noteworthy event in its 60-year timeline, several pioneers dedicated their time and effort to make flight school at Lynn an elite experience, most notably former dean Weldon Case and Professor Emeritus Elton K. Morice Jr. (E.K. Morice).

E.K. Morice joined the Navy during World War II and earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic. By the time he arrived at Lynn in 1983, Morice was already a seasoned pilot managing Boca Aviation’s flight school. At the time, Lynn was known as the College of Boca Raton when it proposed and created an option in aviation management for the B.S. in administration degree program. Morice

came on board with a passionate spirit to start the aviation management program in a move that defined Lynn’s aeronautical footprint for generations to come.

Throughout the years, the aeronautics program received unrivaled support from essential leaders like Weldon Case, former chairman and chief executive of Alltell. In 1997, Case played a vital role in securing

a $1 million grant from the Burton D. Morgan Foundation to establish the School of Aeronautics at Lynn. As a result, the aviation management program adopted the foundation’s name to become the Burton D. Morgan School of Aeronautics. Case served as dean from 1998–99 before his death in 1999.

During Case’s short tenure as dean, Lynn unveiled a state-of-the-

art aeronautic simulator for aviation students to increase their practical hands-on experience and adapt novel flight skills without leaving the ground. In addition, the Burton D. Morgan School of Aeronautics building, a 2,700-square-foot facility located at the Boca Raton Airport, was dedicated to the university and used for classrooms and offices. The school offered an on-campus management program along with the airport building where Lynn students leveraged an assembly area, a virtual pilot simulator, classrooms, a meteorological center and a single Cessna 172 Skyhawk.

Today, industry analysts warn of a potential shortage of 30,000 professional pilots in North America in the next ten years.

Lynn University’s Burton D. Morgan College of Aeronautics is helping to address the industry’s staffing problems by providing much-needed training, technology and professional development to meet increasing demand from the airline industry in South Florida. Students experience a boutique learning environment that ensures plenty of real-world flight time with a fleet of 11 aircraft.

‘To Life 3’ celebrates contributions of Jewish composers to great Hollywood musicals

To Life 3 is a follow-up to two previous To Life productions – both of which sold out at the Willow eatre in 2019 and 2020.

Featuring amusing anecdotes and fascinating historical facts, along with tributes to some of the greatest Jewish performers in Hollywood history, including Eddie Cantor, Danny Kaye and Barbara Streisand, To Life 3 will be performed by ve of South Florida’s award-winning musical theatre artists: Julie Kleiner, Bruno Faria, Michael Materdomini, Amy Tanner and Shari Upbin.

Hy Juter of the Jupiter eater Company, LLC, will produce the show: “We’re extremely excited about this iteration of our To Life series,” he said “ is time we’re focusing on Hollywood and the outstanding talents that contributed to those great musicals we all remember.”

“Our director, Shari Upbin, has also written the show this year. Her background in theatre and her extensive knowledge of the Hollywood musical made her a natural choice to continue our tradition of presenting audiences with a unique combination of history, music, and fun.”

Bobby Peaco will serve as music director and pianist.

“To Life 1 and 2 featured the Jewish composers of Broadway,” Upbin said. “But what most people don’t realize is rst of all, how many of them transitioned to Hollywood, and secondly, that there were numerous Jewish composers who wrote primarily for the movies.”

“I had an amazing time writing the script for the show,” she noted. “I learned so much – there are so many fas-

cinating stories involving these amazingly talented individuals I can’t wait to share with our audiences. And of course, I couldn’t leave out some of the greatest Jewish stars who le their indelible marks – Eddie Cantor, Danny Kaye, Barbra Streisand… so many and so memorable.”

Lynn finds invaluable experience with executives and entrepreneurs in residence

Business colleges and schools across the nation infuse executive level experience, knowledge and best practices into curriculums through executive-in-residence programs. Furthermore, these programs offer unique perspectives into students’ learning experiences and opportunities to engage with accomplished professionals from the business community.

Lynn University leadership carefully hand-selects each member of its executive-in-residence program based on matching criteria and the specific needs of the university at a particular point in its academic timeline. Executives can then teach dedicated courses or contribute as guest speakers and share best business practices with students, a philosophy that Executive-in-Residence Jerry Fedele takes particular pride in.

Prior to Lynn, Fedele was a lawyer and CEO at large complex health systems in Pennsylvania and Florida. Thanks to his extensive background, Fedele is uniquely qualified to bring real-world experiences to Lynn students.

After retiring in 2019, Lynn asked Fedele to be part of its young executive-in-residence program, and he gladly accepted. Fedele was attracted to the idea that he could connect with and mentor young students that had clear aspirations to go far in their careers.

“The opportunity sounded really interesting,” said Fedele. “I love to teach and as a former executive, I was confident that I could bring students a different perspective and way of thinking that they are not typically used to seeing.”

Fedele teaches several courses at

Lynn, including, strategic management capstone seminars for the MBA program, capstone strategy courses for undergraduate business students and several undergraduate courses.

“In addition to the specific subjects we touch in class, my courses are heavily focused on connecting those academic materials with current events,” said Fedele. “I also speak about everything I have seen in my career that makes people successful. I talk about what they can anticipate in their careers, in terms of success, in terms of failures, and how to make sure that they create the best opportunities for themselves to succeed.”

Fedele’s body of work at Lynn has led to numerous students reaching out to the executive-in-residence outside of the classroom to provide insight and mentorship as they navigate their careers. Throughout his courses, Fedele installs his philosophy for student development and growth: “Jerry’s nine keys to professional success,” which has paid dividends for students.

“Professor Fedele truly impacted and influenced my career path. His class opened my eyes and helped me visualize the reality of some topics,” said Natan Gluck, a Lynn student working to earn an MBA in financial valuation and investment. “His steps to success and the numerous topics he introduced in our seminar are one of the most valuable concepts I have learned at Lynn.”

Lynn’s executive- and entrepreneur-in-residence program allows students such as Natan Gluck and executives like Jerry Fedele to learn from each other, grow and develop an academic foundation for future students.

Palm Beach Atlantic Awarded Grant to Expand Nursing Education

Palm Beach Atlantic is one of seven independent, nonprofit higher education institutions eligible to receive more than $4.3 million from the Florida Department of Education to combat the state’s nursing shortage.

The Florida Legislature allocated the Linking Industry to Nursing Education (LINE) funding during the 2022 legislative session. The University has been approved to receive up to $500,000 through the LINE grant.

The grants are intended to incentivize collaboration between nursing education programs and healthcare partners and to meet local, regional and state workforce demands. Funds may be used to recruit faculty, recruit clinical preceptors and increase the capacity of high-quality nursing education programs.

“Palm Beach Atlantic has long had an excellent reputation of educating well-prepared, compassionate nurses,” said School of Nursing Dean Dr. Phyllis King. “This grant will allow us produce even more nurses who are servant leaders in their communities, the state of Florida and the world.”

Participating Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF) institutions will increase the capacity of their high-quality nursing education programs, which will increase the number of nursing graduates.

“Florida is experiencing a severe shortage of nurses, and Flor-

ida’s independent colleges and universities are best suited to respond to market needs and fill the gap,” said Bob Boyd, ICUF president and CEO. “We are grateful to Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature for investing in Florida’s healthcare workforce through ICUF schools.”

Last year, ICUF institutions across the state produced 3,600 nursing degrees, ranging from associate degrees to doctoral, Boyd said. Palm Beach Atlantic offers RN to BSN, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral nursing degrees. The LINE funding will allow the school to expand on this success.

LINE funding is a competitive grant program that provides $19 million to match funds, on a dollar-to-dollar basis, with participating institutions that partner with a hospital and/or healthcare provider in their recruitment efforts.

The other recipients are AdventHealth University, Barry University, Florida Southern College, Jacksonville University, Nova Southeastern University, and University of Miami.

“Florida is in need of more skilled and educated nurses, and Florida’s independent colleges and universities are an important part of the solution to this workforce shortage,” said Dennis Baxley, president pro tempore in the Florida Senate. “That’s why we invested this funding in workforce development, and I’m confident these grant recipients will deliver.”

PBSC Alumnus Becomes Successful Artist and Entrepreneur

Palm Beach State College alumnus Matt Cox has been brewing since 2000.

When Cox opened Copperpoint Brewing Company in 2015, he brought a gem to Boynton Beach. PBSC alumnus Matt Cox has been brewing since 2000. When Cox opened Copperpoint Brewing Company in 2015, he brought a gem to Boynton Beach. Keeping everything close to home with local resources for both beer and bar—from the ingredients for brewing to the tables for gathering— Copperpoint is a true neighborhood establishment that has become a staple of local craftsmanship.

Copperpoint’s design is purposeful, and the copper bar was a must. The result has landed somewhere between a Colorado mountain town tavern and your favorite local pub. Whether you’re a beer fan or not, there is no denying the ambiance and warm décor of Copperpoint’s comfortable taproom and inviting surroundings.

Artistry blends freshness from local and global sources, some coming from Germany and the Czech Republic, two cultures that have defined the craft for centuries. Following his own traditions, Cox is an artist, creating and crafting an array of tastes, and Copperpoint has earned its accolades. The Colorado Beer Festival awarded Copperpoint “best chocolate beer,” a remarkable blend of cocoa, Madagascar vanilla, coconut and expert

craftsmanship made from real, quality ingredients.

Cox describes his days at then Palm Beach Community College from 2000 to 2001 fondly, its essence in the community and relationships he knew in the mid-1990s, inspired by the microbrew movement of the time. With 13 years of experience in the brewing business, he started Copperpoint and today has partnered with the College that was part of his path to becoming a successful entrepreneur. In October 2022, he provided a sponsorship for Palm Beach State’s Golf Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens. Moreover, he is driven by a community and philanthropic mindset, sending proceeds to individuals and organizations across the state in response to 2022’s Hurricane Ian.

With a crew of only two, Cox is producing extraordinary lagers, ales and more. He credits Laura, his wife, who runs the day-to-day operation along with him, and their partnership. “She keeps the place going. I just make the beer.” In fact, the Copperpoint brand is inspired by Laura’s red hair. And there are compelling stories behind the beer. Copperpoint’s A-10 Red IPA (India Pale Ale) takes its moniker from the plane that Matt’s business partner’s grandfather helped engineer during World War II, a personal and patriotic honor for a friend and an American hero.

Copperpoint’s equipment comes from companies in the U.S. and throughout North America, important in the establishment of the Copperpoint company for Cox. “Everything needs great attention to detail, including the water chemistry and a reverse osmosis process. What we do wouldn’t matter without the quality water.”

Great pleasure lies in listening to anyone who is a master of his or her craft, and Cox embodies expertise as distinct as his menu of original recipes for citrus blends, hoppy pilsners and special stouts. And Cox is not interested in either following or setting trends. Rather, he simply exemplifies how passion and perseverance can prevail, one copper pint at a time.

No. 24 FAU Cruises Past WKU, Wins 16th in a Row

Monday, January 16, 2023, was a monumental day for the Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team. The Owls received their first ever top25 ranking, by being named No. 24 in the Associated Press poll earlier this afternoon. FAU followed that up with a convincing 76-62 win over Western Kentucky, improving to 17-1 and 7-0 in C-USA play, and stretching its winning streak to 16 games, which is the second-longest in the nation this season.

Tonight, the Owls held a slim 3433 lead at halftime, but outscored the Hilltoppers 42-29 in the second half. The Owls shot 14-of-26 (53.8%) from the floor in the second half and 5-of-10 (50%) from 3-point range. Johnell Davis took over down the stretch, scoring 12 points on 4-of-7 (57.1%) shooting from the floor in the second half. The Owls blew the game open with an 185 run to stretch a 51-50 lead into 6955 with 6:11 remaining.

“We’re very pleased with our guys’ response in the second half,” FAU head coach Dusty May said. “They tightened up defensively and made everything difficult for Western Kentucky. The rebounding advantage was probably as important as anything, which is a testament to our guys’ scrappiness and toughness.”

This marks the first win for FAU at WKU since 2012-13.

When it comes to the National Ranking, “Our players obviously acknowledged the ranking and are proud of it. They compete every minute of every practice and every game. When the lights come on and the clock is running, they just play basketball and do what they do, so that’s why all of the other stuff should not affect our performance night in and night out.” May said when asked about his team’s handling of being ranked No. 24 in the AP poll.

PBA Baseball Picked 11th in SSC Preseason Poll

The Sunshine State Conference released their rankings for the beginning of the 2023 baseball season. The Sailfish were voted in at 11th place out of 11 teams.

Coach Kent Bottenfield‘s squad is looking to improve off of their 2022 season, in which they finished 16-34 and 11-20 in SSC play. Although they may have lost some offensive firepower, the ‘Fish return OF/INF Matty Warren, who was top five on the team in hits and runs batted in. PBA also returns some key members of

the bullpen in Chris Seymour, Nick Adams, Dan Beebe, and Justin Lovell.

Tampa University took the top spot in the rankings for the fifth year in a row, followed by Nova Southeastern and Saint Leo. Rollins, who made a deep run in the NCAA tournament in 2022, placed fourth and Florida Southern took the fifth place spot.

PBA will have something to prove this season as they open up on Feb. 2 against Lane College and begin SSC play against Tampa on Feb. 24.

Since 2003, Palm Beach State ranks in the Top 15 for all Junior Colleges and Top 20 in Colleges in Florida for having players drafted by Major League Baseball.

Starting in 2003, Palm Beach State has had 32 players drafted in the MLB Draft. Two players, Mike Rayl (2008-2009) and Peter Mooney (2009-2010), were drafted during both of their seasons at Palm Beach State College. Of the 32 players drafted, 1 was drafted in the 4th round (Gio Arriera, 2017), 2 in the 5th round (Brandon Welch, 2012 and JD Underwood, 2013), and 1 in the 6th round (Mack Lemieux, 2016).

Of the 32 players drafted, 3 have gone on to make the Major League. Catcher Tony Cruz (26th round, 2007) and Kevin Siegrist (41st round, 2008) both made their big league debuts with the St. Louis Cardinals. Nick Vespi (18th round, 2015)

made his Major League debut during the 2022 season with the Baltimore Orioles.

In addition to the 3 players who made it to the Major League, Peter Strzelecki and Brad Peacock are also Palm Beach State Alum who have made it to the pros. Peter Strzelecki started his career at Palm Beach State and then transferred to University of South Florida, where he was an Undrafted Free Agent Signing by the Milwaukee Brewers. Brad Peacock attended Palm Beach State from 2006-2007 after being drafted out of Palm Beach Central HS. Brad was a key member of the 2017 Houston Astros team who won the World Series.

Mason Doolittle (18th round) was the most recent draft pick from Palm Beach State College in 2019.
