president’s message Names to Know at the Club

Dear Premier Club Member, I’ve been a listener of jazz music since my youth. My father was a classically trained yet rogue jazz pianist who was my primary influence in the development of my passion for this genre. Last month, the legendary jazz pianist, David Benoit, played at Jazziz in Mizner Park. Every piece he played was either his own or one from the great Vince Guaraldi who many know as the composer of the musical scores for Charles Schultz’ Peanuts. David Benoit’s passion, discipline and creativity were alive and well during his performance. His trio was respectful of Guaraldi’s music but they put a modern spin on the music. In a way, the entire night was a lot like where we are as a Resort & Club; Benoit was greatly influenced by Guaraldi, but then set out on his own to make his own name and gift the jazz world with his music.

Happy New Year! The Senior One Team, led by Captain Pam Altman, will be defending their first place finish last year as they open league play on Mondays. Senior Three, led by Captain Donna Jendlin, will also be following up on a great season – they reached the league finals last year and finished in second by a whisker – as they take to the courts on Mondays. The first half of the South Palm Beach County League season drew to a close with Captains Mimi Levin and Beth Zipper leading the Boca Country Club Division Two Team to a strong finish. The ladies of the Division Six Team, led by Captains Bonnie Zeiger and Carol Smokler, were also in the thick of it. In addition to more great league play in 2015, you can enjoy seeing the Blackman Academy kids on the courts, take part in the Kaplan Round Robin, sign up for a lesson or clinics and, as always, play the game you love at Boca Country Club. Kevin Ives Chosen as the Resort & Club’s First Executive Chef of Restaurants Kevin Ives’ talents as both an award-winning chef and innovative restaurateur will serve him well as he takes on the role of executive chef of restaurants at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. The newly created position – designed to provide a direct source of guidance, inspiration and support for the Resort & Club’s talented restaurant chefs as the kitchens they oversee get busier and busier – is perfect for Kevin, who has an impressive background in the culinary arts. His input will be seen in regular menu changes, culinary innovation and increased performance. Most recently, Kevin served as corporate chef for the Four-Star Restaurant Group in Chicago. He also served as corporate chef for Francesca’s Restaurant Group in Chicago, overseeing 21 restaurants. Before moving to the Windy City, he was executive chef at the world renowned Merriman’s Restaurants in Maui and Kauai, Hawaii. Prior to that, while working at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, South Carolina, he was part of a team that achieved Forbes’ coveted Five-Star Award. Kevin strives to remain at the forefront of his chosen profession by continuing to further his education and continually hone his skills. He has taken numerous courses at The Culinary Institute of America and received the Level One Sommelier Certificate from the Court of Master Sommeliers. What made you decide to embrace an Enlightened Lifestyle? Joe: My eating habits were terrible. I wanted to learn how to eat properly and get into a structured exercise program. Was the process what you had imagined? Joe: The process was a lot more than I imagined. The most impressive part was meeting Dr. Willix because he explained my results completely and was clear about what I had to work on and what I had to do. Jacquie: It felt like a much more comprehensive testing than I have ever been through. There was a greater focus on fitness and potential. I was impressed by the knowledge Dr. Willix gleaned from the tests about me. What results have you seen since starting down the pathway? Jacquie: I have lost 14 pounds and have an entirely new approach to food and eating and fitness. I am in better shape than I have been in years and I have more energy! Would you recommend the EL pathway to others? Joe: Yes. The pathway has gotten me back on track. I eat properly and exercise. As a result I have more energy during the day. What happens when a toy rocking horse meets a dinosaur created by Pop provocateur Jeff Koons? You get Split Rocker. At once adorable and strange, this piece has gone through many iterations over the past decade-plus and can now be brought home as a plate or vase thanks to the artist’s recent collaboration with French porcelain manufacturer Bernardaud.

The story of this particular transformation of the everyday into art starts in the playroom. As Koons explains, “My son happened to have this rocking horse and when I was working on the painting Shelter (1996-98) I thought I needed something for scale in the background, so I used that. Then I remembered another rocker that I had found, which was a dinosaur.” The rest, as they say, is history. He created a suite of small works in 1999 that used contrasting colors to emphasize the split, which, for Koons, represents the greatest point of tension and possibility in the piece. “What I was really interested in was the split, where there actually isn’t any form,” he says. “Because of this division of two split profiles being brought together, there is this idea of a continued sense of division and union.” Since bigger is better, or so our commercial culture tells us, Split Rocker was eventually blown up into a monumental planter, covered with a living pelt of grass and flowers. An image of its installation at Versailles graces the front of the generously sized plate by Bernardaud, while the pristine white vase, with room for a lush bouquet, continues the floral theme.
