Dear Premier Club Members, Although we are still fresh into a new year, 2019 is already off to a sensational start. This month, we welcome the return of the Boca Country Club golf course after its complete restoration and grow-in. Many thanks to Joe Postel, Director of Horticulture and Golf Course Maintenance, and his very talented and hard-working team. In celebration of Presidents Weekend and American Heart Month, we’ve decided to do a combined weekend of wellness featuring some of our favorite Artists-in-Residence. Highlights for the weekend include brand-new Aqua Mat Fitness classes led by Gina Bradley’s Paddle Diva; Mary Ann Morgan-Fried of KarmaVibes Yoga will host a donation-based class on the croquet lawn to raise funds for Parkland Cares; and our Orangetheory Fitness studio and trainers will be in full swing to help you maintain your 2019 health goals. February will be an exciting month for fans of our exclusive Corks & Conversations series as we host a unique dinner pairing at Lucca with the iconic Giusti Artisanal Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. Cooking classes led by our incredibly talented chefs are also officially back for the season. In addition, we will debut a new series of Monkey Bar Takeovers where our expert barmen will partner with visiting celebrity mixologists from the hottest bars in New York City and Northern California. Our entertainment lineup is equally impressive featuring Late Night Jam sessions with Nashville’s hit songwriters and more. Be sure to take note of the calendars. Finally, stay tuned for details on a new partnership with one of Boca Raton’s most cuttingedge personal training facilities. We’ll be making a big announcement in the coming weeks. Hamachi, Japanese yellow tail, is prepared sashimi-style and marinated in a spicy lime sauce, and served with house guacamole in a crispy dumpling skin, and garnished with fresh cilantro. RECIPE FROM CHEF JORDAN LERMAN METHOD Place the raisins, half of the sugar and the brandy in a sauce pot and bring to a simmer. Allow to cook until most of the liquid has evaporated. Add the raisins and remaining liquid and blend until smooth. Bring the white balsamic vinegar and the remaining sugar to a boil just to dissolve the sugar. Allow to cool. Add the sliced grapes and let sit overnight. Spread a small amount of the puréed raisins in the center of the plate. Toss the celery, celery root and apples with a couple tablespoons of the creamy vinaigrette and season with a small amount of salt and pepper. Place a handful of the dressed salad on top of the raisin purée on the plate. Add a few slices of the soaked grapes and complete the garnish with crumbled blue cheese and crushed candied nuts over the salad and enjoy!

As CEO of Dragonfly Expeditions, Florida’s largest corporate tour company, Charles is a leader in educational, ecological, historic, and cultural tours in Florida and the Caribbean basin. He has created over 150 distinctive tours in Florida. These tours have been featured by The Travel Channel, The Weather Channel, National Geographic, Condé Nast Traveler and many other media outlets around the globe. Through his media company, Tropic Moon Media, Charles created three hour-long PBS documentaries in 2015. One of those documentaries, “The Unseen Everglades, Inside A Legendary Wilderness,” garnished an Emmy Award and was shown on PBS affiliates throughout the country. The much-heralded new, six-part national PBS series “Battleground Everglades” began airing in January 2018. His new documentary on the beginnings of New York City, “Hidden New York,” is being picked up by a national network this spring.

Statistics Let’s take a look at some facts about heart disease:

•Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. •Approximately 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year— that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. •Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, killing over 370,000 people annually. •Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 210,000 happen to people who have already had a heart attack. I also want to bring up a thought-provoking study linking heart disease with excessive television watching. A recent study found that people who spent hours watching television greatly increased the chances of dying early from heart attacks and strokes. Compared with those watching less than two hours of TV, people who sat in front of the TV for more than four hours a day were 80% more likely to die for reasons linked to heart and artery disease. I am not saying to stop watching your favorite shows, but I am saying that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to chronic symptoms. I won’t belabor the fact that you need to exercise—you already know the importance of physical activity that goes along with a good heart.

Good Eats Besides exercise, let’s look at some foods that take care of the heart and blood pressure. I sat down with Dr. Jeffrey Morrison, head of the Morrison Center in New York City and frequent South Florida visitor, to discuss how we can optimize our heart health. Here are some of his food recommendations:

•Celery: helps lower blood pressure and is a great choice for a quick snack. •Garlic: ideally roasted or sautéed, it is also used as a blood-pressure lowering food. •Raw beets: provides nutrients to enhance NO (nitric oxide) production, which is very helpful for improving circulation. Dr. Morrison suggests shredded beat salad as a great way to eat raw beets. •Dark chocolate (>70% cacao): very high in anti-oxidants and nutrients to improve circulation and lower blood pressure. A moderate portion of dark chocolate is a great way to enjoy cacao. •Parsley: a great natural diuretic and helps alleviate fluid retention. Use parsley as a garnish with all meals and also add it to soups.
