Dear Premier Club Members, With spring just days away, it’s a perfect time to spotlight our great Spring Break entertainment lineup. We’ve scheduled fun for all ages, like Quest Club Kid’s Camp, Chill & Grill (and movies) at Shaka, and lots of live music options. It all culminates in a tribute to George Michael, featuring Artist in Residence Jesse McCartney and other talents. Ticket sales will benefit Unlikely Heroes, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates child victims of slavery all over the world. I hope many of you will participate in this exciting and important event. We have another terrific Artist in Residence this month – Michael DelGuidice is visiting with his Big Shot Billy Joel cover band! This issue of BCL includes a profile of DelGuidice, including stories about his relationship with Billy Joel – so be sure to check that out. Avid and aspiring golfers, take note! For this issue, we interviewed Dave Pelz about his innovative approach to working with golfers at all levels. Members receive discounts on lessons and clinics, so if you haven’t yet tried Dave’s school, read the article and consider signing up. Then book some tee time to practice on our recently renovated golf course! This month, our Corks & Conversations series continues with two dinners: the wines of Sardinia on the 6th and Silver Oak Winery on the 16th. This new series has gotten popular in a hurry, so reserve early if interested. Finally, please join me in welcoming Egg & Friends children’s clothing shop to the Resort & Club. It’s the sixth store from Egg designer and founder Susan Lazar, who describes it as “a lifestyle brand with soul, focused on the love between parent and child.” Egg & Friends is a fantastic place for cool outfits, toys, and baby or birthday gifts, and I encourage all of you to pay the store a visit! Happy Spring to all of you,

John Tolbert President John.Tolbert@waldorfastoria.com

Greta Seminario steps out into the light of a new day

Seasoned team member takes up the reins as the new director of outdoor operations at the Beach Club

Y

You could say the hospitality industry is in Greta Seminario’s blood. She started her career in Tampa at her family’s restaurant. She has been part of the team at the Resort & Club since 2011. If her face doesn’t look familiar, don’t worry. Greta started as a supervisor of In-Room Dining, who, by 2015, had worked her way up to Manager of In-Room Dining at the Beach Club. Greta, who has a degree in business administration/ hotel and restaurant management from College Cenfotur in Lima, Peru, is excited about making the transition from In-Room Dining to open-air dining at Beaches. Her goal is to improve team member productivity and enhance the Club Member experience. “I want to make an impression on every Club Member every time they visit us,” she says. “To me, that means exceeding expectations and making Beaches the best outdoor dining destination in Boca!” Whether at home with her three children or at the Beach Club, she says her mantra is, "Love what you do, do what you love."

Bocce:

Dangerous Distraction or a Great Way to Have Fun with Friends?

A

According to the United States Bocce Federation, soccer and golf are the only sports that attract more players than bocce. If you’d like to find out what has all those folks coming back to the bocce court, time and time again, Sunset Bocce at the Resort & Club is for you! “You don’t have to know how to play bocce,” says Felix Tristani, our resident bocce guru. “It doesn’t matter how big, strong, tall or fast you are – none of that matters. If you want to have fun and enjoy a little socializing, you’ll do fine.” Felix can be found courtside during Sunset Bocce, every Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7 pm. There’s no need for reservations; stop by on your way to dinner or make plans to meet a friend – or two – for cocktails in the Monkey Bar, served with a bocce chaser! (The Resort & Club’s Bocce Garden, complete with Har-Tru court, is tucked between the Croquet Lawn and Monkey Bar, which offers courtside service.)

“I’m there to show folks how to play and to help them play through a game,” Felix says. Once you get a feel for the game, he’ll continue to offer helpful suggestions and maybe a tip or two on strategy. “My goal is simply to help everybody do their best playing the game and see that they have a good time.” Traditionally, bocce is played according to a long list of rules. To keep the game moving and the focus on fun, at Sunset Bocce, the play is friendly and the rules are relaxed. For example, established rules require that, before throwing a ball, players must tell the referee what their intentions are. “Are you intending to knock one of the opponent’s balls out of the way, which is called spocking, or are you intending to roll it close to the pallino, which is trying to score points?” Felix explains. “We don’t worry about that. Just throw the ball – and have fun doing it.” In other words, feel free to spock, whether it’s intentional or not. bocaresort.com •

Memorable Wines from Italy’s Forgotten Island

I

Located 150 miles off the coast of mainland Italy, Sardinia is the secondlargest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s only slightly smaller than Sicily, Italy’s other island region, but the number of people familiar with the exotic island is much smaller in comparison. Saridinia – or Sardegna, as native-born Renato Spanu calls it – is known for its spectacular beaches and rugged slopes. It’s also earning a reputation for its wines. Spanu is the driving force behind the Jankara label. The winery’s Vermentino di Gallura Superiore DOCG 2014 and Old Vine Blend “Lu Nieddu” IGT 2014 are among the wines fueling that reputation – and among those that will be featured in the Corks & Conversations: Wines of Sardinia event to be held at the Resort & Club on Monday, March 6.

Jankara also produces Colli di Limbara Lu Nieddu IGT, a field blend of Cannonau, Caricaggiola, Pascale di Cagliari, Dolcetto, Barbera and Cabernet Franc, all harvested from a single vineyard planted by Spanu’s great uncle 85 years ago. “We only produce 2,000 bottles of it – to be exact, 2,052,” Spanu says. With hints of red berries, vanilla and spice on the nose, the scarlet red wine can be served with anything from seafood to osso bucco, according to Spanu. “It pairs well with the very rich fish, such as tuna or salmon. It also pairs really well with roasted meat,” he says. “It really can go across the spectrum.”

Along with his wife, Angela, Spanu established the Jankara estate in 2006 as part of a long-held dream to return to his homeland. “I left Sardegna when I was 17 years old; I came to the United States to go to college. Once I was here, I continued working in the wine business. Coming from vineyards back home and making wine, it was kind of a natural progression,” he explains. “But the thing is that, ever since I left Sardegna, I’ve been trying to get back.”

Lucca Chef Adam Pile, who developed the dinner menu for the Corks & Conversations event in collaboration with Spanu and Resort & Club Director of Beverages Eric Hammer, will pair it with tuna carpaccio.

While continuing to manage the State of Florida for Neil Empson – one of the most prestigious Italian wine exporters – Spanu and his wife purchased 21 acres of untouched hillside in the Sardinian highlands of Gallura. In 2008, they planted 11 of the original 21 acres with the Vermentino grapes. Jankara’s first vintage was produced in 2010.

The evening will also feature the Carignano/Shiraz Blend 2010 from Shardana and Cannonau di Sardegna DOC “Noras” 2013 from Santadi. The Cannonau is a very traditional Sardinian red wine, according to Spanu. “It’s probably the most famous red wine from Sardinia,” he says. “It’s also the wine with the highest level of resveratrol of any wine on earth, so it’s actually quite healthy for you to drink. It’s quite delicious, too, so it’s a dangerous one.

The estate is most famous for its white wine – Vermentino di Gallura. “Gallura is the only DOCG area for the production of Vermentino in the world,” Spanu explains proudly. “It’s a wonderful white wine.” Spanu isn’t the only one with an appreciation for the extremely rich white. “Out of the top five wines consumed in Italy, four are red. The only white in the top five is Vermentino from Sardinia,” Spanu says. “Believe it or not, the Italians don’t drink Pinot Grigio.” 16

Jankara Vermentino di Gallura DOCG shows Gallura’s hallmark balance of alcohol, acidity and fruit. “It pairs beautifully with anything out of the sea,” Spanu says.

• march 2017 • BCL

“He’s really gone and researched a lot of our traditional Sardinian cuisine. He’s very talented,” Spanu says of Chef Adam. “He came up with a great menu, I have to say. It’s quite authentic.”

“We’re finishing with this very rare dessert wine called Latinia,” Spanu says. The Santadi Latinia 2010 that will be served at the wine dinner is made only with Nasco, one of Sardinia’s most ancient white grapes. “The dessert wine tastes like dried apricots with honey drizzled on top, it’s really spectacular.”

A White-Hot Spotlight Shines on Mike DelGuidice

and Big Shot

M

Mike DelGuidice launched the Billy Joel cover band Big Shot in 2000. But let’s be clear – Big Shot isn’t just any Billy Joel tribute band. When Billy Joel first heard Mike DelGuidice covering one of his songs, he thought he was listening to a tape. “We had Big Shot do a sound check for us once,” the piano man said, recalling the day. “So, I go backstage while they’re doing this and I’m hearing this guy singing and I said to one of the road crew, ‘Oh, they’re playing a tape.’ ‘No, that’s that band Big Shot.’ I said, ‘No it’s not. That’s me.’” It was definitely DelGuidice. “He plays guitar, he plays keyboards, he sings harmony great. It’s almost as if I’m harmonizing with myself,” Joel said. “I asked him to be in the band.” DelGuidice and Joel have more in common than vocal ability. Both grew up on Long Island. So, when NBC’s Harry Smith asked DelGuidice what the music means to him, he didn’t have to think twice. “It’s the story of my life growing up. It means everything to me,” he said for a segment that aired on Today.

Book online now at bocaresort.com/events or call 561-447-3071.

Meeting and working alongside his idol has done nothing to diminish Joel’s stature in DelGuidice’s eyes. “I’ve got a great boss,” he once told the crew on CBS This Morning Saturday.

the Alexa Ray Joel band, the TransSiberian Orchestra and the orchestra for the Broadway production of The Lion King – oh, yeah, he’s also performed with Billy Joel.

And DelGuidice isn’t the only one in Big Shot with a connection to the man whose music they celebrate. Tommy Byrnes (lead guitar/vocals) and Chuck Burgi (drums) are also members of Joel’s band. In fact, it was through them that Big Shot landed the opportunity to play for that fateful sound check.

In addition to joining Joel for his monthly gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden, DelGuidice will be joining the music legend on a summer tour with stops at seven iconic baseball stadiums.

The other members of Big Shot have some serious chops, themselves. John Scarpulla (saxophone/vocals) has toured with Diana Ross and Huey Lewis. Nick Dimichino (bass) is an original member of the band Nine Days, which scored a #1 hit in the United States with the single “Absolutely (Story of a Girl),” Carmine Giglio (keyboard/synthesizer/vocals) has a long resume that includes playing with

In ninth grade, DelGuidice was throwing pitches that clocked in at more than 80 miles per hour. While still in school, a shoulder injury ended his baseball career before it started and music took center stage in his life. DelGuidice has absolutely no regrets but admits that he is especially looking forward to being able to say he played Fenway Park.

Mike DelGuidice & Big Shot - Celebrating The Music of Billy Joel Friday, March 17 | 8:30 pm Showtime Open Seating (non-reserved theater-style seating): $55++ Reserved Seating (private/reserved table seating) with pre-concert cocktail reception with appetizers: $70++ Both ticket options include deluxe open bar, upgraded wines and Champagne. Boca by Design

A Fresh Perspective on this Year’s Design Trends

P

Perri Landsberg, a special events designer with Boca by Design, wholeheartedly approves of the shade selected by Pantone as the Color of the Year. “When I learned that Greenery had been chosen I was excited,” she says. “I am always a fan of greenery and tend to lean more toward fresh and natural looking décor, both in my personal and professional life.” A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery, the folks at Pantone tell us, is symbolic of new beginnings. It’s a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring and reflects current trends in global design.

“Bringing the outdoors in is very popular this season,” says Perri, who joined the Boca by Design Team in 2015 as a special events designer specializing in corporate functions. She balances her passion for creativity, design and fashion with the expertise she has gained working both at large firms in New York City and as creative director at South Florida DMC to design memorable events for her clients. “Plants can be used to soften the perimeter of a room and add life to a living room or event space,” she explains. “At Boca by Design, we have also started using large, glossy leaves from the tropical Monstera deliciosa plant to replace chargers, giving table settings a more natural look. It is so elegant and can be easily done for any hosted party.” Large tropical leaves can also be used to create a simple yet chic centerpiece, whether you are planning a corporate affair or an anniversary dinner. “You don’t need to add any florals,” Perri insists. “The leaves speak for themselves – and they make a grand statement.”

“I do love flowers and they are not going anywhere,” Perri admits, “but Greenery is the star this year.” Perri Landsberg, Boca by Design special events designer According to Pantone, Greenery is nature’s neutral; a life-affirming shade, emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality. “The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world,” the color experts report. “This shift is reflected by the proliferation of all things expressive of Greenery in daily lives through urban planning, architecture, lifestyle and design choices globally. A constant on the periphery, Greenery is now being pulled to the forefront – it is an omnipresent hue around the world.” And there’s another reason why Perri is so happy that it is the Color of the Year. She’s planning a very special wedding – her own. “My focus is more on the greenery than the florals,” she says. “It’s so refreshing to feel like you are in a natural environment, even if you are indoors.” Her wedding plans feature a stunning installation with florals and greens hanging from the ceiling – “almost like an upsidedown field,” as she explains it. “I do love flowers and they are not going anywhere,” Perri admits, “but Greenery is the star this year.”

Taijiquan (Tai Chi)

Thursdays, March 9 and 23 | 6 pm | Spa Garden

Discover the amazing benefits of taijiquan – popularly known as tai chi – as master instructor Tom Singkornrat leads you through a full 60-minute introduction. Taijiquan is slow and gentle, but it addresses the key components of fitness – muscle strength, flexibility, balance and aerobic conditioning – without leaving you breathless. $15

Class will include: 1. Introduction to qigong and taijiquan, including a brief history followed by an explanation of the basic principles 2. Breathing exercises 3. Taiji qigong 18 movements practice 4. First section of the Yang-style, the most popular form of taijiquan, long- form practice 5. Discussion and closing

A Gentle Practice with Powerful Results Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial-arts practice that focuses on slow, deliberate movements. While it is sometimes called “meditation in motion,” don’t be fooled. Although tai chi is slow and gentle and doesn’t leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness – muscle strength, flexibility and balance. “Although you aren’t working with weights or resistance bands, the unsupported arm exercise involved in tai chi strengthens your upper body,” says internist Dr. Gloria Yeh, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. “Tai chi strengthens both the lower and upper extremities and also the core muscles of the back and abdomen.”

golf

Dave Pelz

Aims to Develop Golfers of Every Skill Level The Dave Pelz Scoring Game School on the grounds of the Boca Country Club is a short-game paradise.

H

Here, instructors help golfers fine tune their chipping, pitching and putting – as well as their sand and wedge skills – using a system designed to improve scores.

BCL: You have golf academies all over the country. How does the school in Boca Raton fit into the big picture?

“We focus on the short game and putting because golfers lose 80% of their shots to par inside of 100 yards,” Pelz says. “If you can hit short-game shots and distance wedges closer to the hole and get serious about improving your putting, the game is going to get really fun for you because you’ll be shooting lower scores. It’s really that simple.”

BCL: You’ve taught thousands of students at the Boca Country Club school. What does the training focus on?

Currently, Pelz – who coaches top players like Patrick Reed, Brendan Steele and five-time major winner Phil Mickelson – is excited about a breakthrough putting project. “After 10 years of research, I believe I have cracked the code of green reading,” he says. “I’m not only writing a book about it, I’m launching a Kickstarter campaign on May 8 to fund a system for teaching it.

BCL: Do you have students that come to the school time and again?

“I think it will be the most significant contribution to the game I ever make. Every golfer putts once, twice or three times on every green they play. Reading greens properly can impact scoring in a huge way.” Recently, we had a chance to talk golf with the teaching legend. Here what he had to say:

36

• march 2017 • BCL

DP: We started our schools in Austin, Texas, but Boca was the first place we expanded our schools to in 1993. It has been a pure joy ever since. The schools are well attended. We help people from all over play the game better, because they love to come to Boca.

DP: Every golfer should start learning the game with putting, then chipping, then pitching and then go on to the rest of the game. The short game is where the scoring happens and it’s the perfect foundation for the rest of your game. If you want to improve, you should start by working with putting and the putting stroke and then move to the short-game shots. And, that’s what we do. We teach golfers to play the scoring shots better and, therefore, lower their scores. DP: We do. The skills we teach are ones you can build on and refine for as long as you play the game. I just taught in a Signature School at Boca last month and we had several returning alumni say they get something different every time they come. I think that’s because they are, in fact, different golfers. They’ve improved over time and what they get from our schools changes enough each time that they really grow and become measurably better. One couple was there for the fourth trip and they loved it. BCL: You teach many top pros. What’s different about what you teach professionals in a one-on-one setting and what is taught at the school? DP: It’s really not any different in concept. The fundamentals are the same. The ball does not know how old, how tall, how short, how smart or how intellectual the golfer is. The ball only knows how the club moves through impact. The school is individualized enough to handle the beginner, the intermediate, the improving golfer, all the way to the absolute best on the planet. We teach with the same fundamentals to every golfer, because the ball has the same fundamental requirements. However, how we teach each golfer changes with their unique techniques and problem areas. We always focus on helping to improve the golfer’s techniques to provide better impact.

BCL: You’ve authored top-selling golf-instruction books, including Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible and Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible. You’ve had a top-rated show on the Golf Channel and your schools have been successful for nearly three decades. What are you working on now? DP: I’m glad you asked. I am so excited, because the last 10 years I have been struggling with my effort to learn – and then to teach others – to read greens better. Golfers, in many cases, miss putts because they don’t know where to aim their putter. They misread the break that they’re expecting to see the ball take. Then, after they miss the putt, they virtually always blame their putting stroke. They very seldom go back and say, “I didn’t read that right.” It’s a real problem for the PGA Tour professionals. On every tour I’ve ever been on, I always see the same problem. They don’t read greens accurately. I’ve delved into green reading on a deep level, based on the physics of our planet, the gravity, friction, slope, grass – all of the details that actually apply to what the ball cares about when it’s rolling along the putting green. Why does it break? Why does it not break? How much is it going to break? I have finally, within the last nine months, “cracked the code” of green reading. I’m starting a Kickstarter campaign to fund the wide-arching green-reading project. I’ve done the research, but to fund the actual production of a book, the support materials and four DVDs that I’ve scripted, we’re going to engage golfers and see what their level of excitement is. We expect it will be high because every golfer has to read the green and putt more than 30 times, every round they play. And when they read their putts better, they hole more of them. BCL: How can people learn more about this project? DP: For now, the best way is to visit pelzgolf.com in early May. I would love to have golfers join me in bringing this to the world. We’re going to start the project on Kickstarter on May 8, which is only two months away. We’ll be delivering the books and the DVDs in November. You’ve got to aim your putts somewhere. Why not learn to read greens better and reap the benefits of lower scores? bocaresort.com •

The longest tennis match in history took place in 2010 at Wimbledon, in an epic competition between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. After 11 hours and 5 minutes of play spread out over three days, Isner won the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 70-68. On the other end of the spectrum, in 1988, Steffi Graf needed only 34 minutes to defend her French Open title, putting Natalia Zvereva away 6-0, 6-0 in the shortest Grand Slam final ever. bocaresort.com •
