president’s message

Dear Premier Club Member, I hope you’ll all agree that 2016 is off to a great start here at the Resort & Club. I’m fully settled in and enjoying working with our great team. We’re very excited about the programming we have planned for the coming months. The month of February is always festive for our members, and this year is no different. Valentine’s Day falls on President’s weekend this year, so we’re going all out with great activities. Of particular note is the big AMOR Gala on Valentine’s Eve, which will showcase the Tito Puente Jr. Orchestra as well as performances by champion ballroom dancers. On Valentine’s Day itself we’ve got our Valentine’s Mixed Golf Tournament and Prime Rib Buffet. And we hope to see many of you at Family Fun Day, which is scheduled for the Monday holiday. We’re proud to host our 10th straight Concours d’Elegance on the weekend of February 19-21. The inimitable TV celebrity and vintage car enthusiast Jay Leno will be our guest and emcee the event. We’ll kick off the fun on Friday night with the

duPont Registry Live Hangar Party, continue on Saturday with our Gala Dinner Auction & Show, and wrap with the big event on Sunday. Perhaps the best thing about the Concours d’Elegance is that it benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County, an organization we’re proud to support. February 6 is our 90th anniversary, so happy birthday to us! Make sure you check out the special anniversary spread beginning on page 18 of this commemorative issue. Some fun facts: did you know that when BCC opened in 1926, it was known as the “Ritz-Carlton Cloister Inn”? Or that the U.S. Army housed soldiers at BCC during World War II? I’m sure many of you have great Resort & Club stories and

Painting

with Polymer

Baker Sponder Gallery recently added Donald Martiny to its list of important artists. Martiny has just completed two site specific works for the lobby of One World Trade Center, as well as a solo show at the gallery’s main space. His exciting gestural works bridge the gap between painting and sculpture. While the brushstroke motif has been embraced by artists ranging from Roy Lichtenstein to James Nares, Martiny takes a singular approach. Each smear of paint is full of multiple colors, giving the impression that they were created with massive brushes. In actuality, Martiny doesn’t use a paintbrush, he makes these works entirely by hand. To create the highly palpable textures, he mixes polymers and pigments until he reaches a desirable viscosity. Martiny then dries the surface using industrial fans and, finally, affixes the finished work to sheets of aluminum. For further information, please contact Baker Sponder Gallery in the Cloister Lobby at.447-0321 or info@bakerspondergallery.com.

The Boca Raton Resort & Club Celebrates 90 Years of Life Well-Lived

On February 6, 1926, The Cloister Inn opened its doors to society’s elite. Modeled after a Spanish castle, the original 100-room inn was designed by famed architect Addison Mizner. After 90 years, scores of renovations and countless adventures, the historic property – now known as the Boca Raton Resort & Club – still rises proudly above the city skyline, welcoming Members and guests in distinctive style. Throughout 2016, we will be commemorating the Resort & Club’s 90th anniversary, starting with a festive reception in the Main Lobby on Friday, February 5 at 7 pm. Be part of history! As Premier Members, we invite you to sign your name in the official 90th Anniversary hotel register. Sip refreshing key lime juice, made from the Cloister Inn’s original recipe, and lend an ear as the music of 1926 once again fills the air. The celebration will continue in the weeks and months ahead with dinners, dancing, tournaments, parties and festive happenings of the Roaring Twenties, the era of Prohibition and prosperity. Gatsby’s Little White Dress Poolside Party • February 26 | 7 pm | Tower Pool Sam Snead Golf Tournament • March 17 | 12:30 pm Scramble | Resort Course Under the “Boardwalk Empire” Dock Party • April 8 | 8 pm | Marina All-White Grass Court Tennis Tournament • May 21 “$90.90” B.B. King All-Star Band LobsterBash • June 5 Be sure to look for the 90th Anniversary logo in the pages of this and future issues of Boca Club Life for more information and for more wonderful ways to celebrate this major milestone in the life of our community.
