There are numerous professions, ranging from law enforcement, to the military, to the medical field, including many of the trades (plumbers, carpenters and electricians, etc.) where the concept of “carrying a backup”for critical tools or gear is an absolute must. I am a big believer of what I call the “Noah’s Ark”principle of marine management for items like navigation, safety and communications equipment…take two of everything! Whether I am piloting my vessel for the day for hire or for pleasure, or taking someone and their crew out on an “away charter”, there is a six-pack of requisite tools that I carry in my travel bag that might make sense for your style of boating.

PAPER CHARTS, A BACKUP GPS AND MAGNETIC COMPASS In this era of easy plug-and-play electronic navigation, even first-time boaters can feel like seasoned old salts when it comes to pointing to a spot on a multi-function display (MFD) chart, touching it with a finger, hitting the “go to”icon on the unit’s drop-down menu and then following the course line that indicates the direction to steer, speed and ETA. This is a very Star Trek like approach to the old school ways of a compass and a stopwatch, set and drift calculations, Loran-C time differentials, etc. But what would happen to the new-school neophyte mariners if they were to somehow have a power hiccup and the “all knowing”MFD unit shuts off unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere, at night and/or in restricted visibility…now what?

I have navigated home in storms or at night in less than ideal conditions and without a functional GPS or LORAN-C navigator more times than I’d care to remember. With NOAA getting out of the paper chart business years ago, Captain Segull’s Sportfishing Charts of New Bern, NC (888-473-4855) has been making plastic coated fishing charts for three decades and I never leave home without one of these in the bag. Although they are not sold as navigational charts (I use them for that purpose in an emergency), their many dozens of charts are laminated, waterproof and in full color. They highlight latitude and longitude (GPS), Loran lines, depth contour lines, shore services such as fuel docks, loading ramps, kayak launches, pump-out stations and restaurants. Also highlighted are fishing holes with local names, coordinates of buoys, inlets, reefs, rigs and wrecks.

My backup GPS units are in the form of a pair of Garmin units that run on two AA alkaline batteries. The first is a GPSmap 60CSx handheld that my son MSgt Chris Raguso used on his combat search and rescue missions flying in the sandbox, plus a more recent GPSmap 64X that I purchased in Costco last year for only $149. Finally, if all of my electronics die in some freak electrical storm or EMP attack, my trusty Suunto handheld compass does the job and gets me home in conjunction with my Captain Segull charts.

BACKUP LED FLASHLIGHTS Even though you wouldn’t think of Costco as the ultimate marine retail outlet, they do sell a variety of gear that finds its way onto my boats. One of these is a three-pack of Duracell Durabeam Ultra LED flashlights that I purchased on sale for $15.99 earlier this season. These hold up extremely well in the saltwater environment when tucked away in your boat bag or down below. The powerful 550 lumens LED beam (2 hours of user time) will reach out 130 meters and the variable focus lens can come in handy when trying to find that unlit channel marker at night. The low intensity mode’s illumination is rated at 100 lumens (7 hours of user time), with the strobe setting a great tool for signaling a danger or distress situation after sundown.

SPARE PRIMARY FUEL FILTERS Most gasoline powered vessels typically have a primary fuel filter located somewhere in the bilge that screens the petrol as it transits from the fuel tank to the engine. With the predominance of E10 ethanol blend fuel sold at marinas and local gas stations, just a few ounces of water introduced into this E-10 fuel can cause some nasty things to happen. A major culprit to causing a bad day on the water is “phase separation”, a chemical reaction where water that gets in your fuel causes the ethanol to physically separate from the petroleum and form a witch’s brew of water and alcohol on the bottom of your tank where your fuel pickup is located. Ingestion of this mix can cause your engine to have a mechanical breakdown and your warranty to be voided. The primary fuel filter’s job is to try to prevent this from happening, but if there is too much water in your fuel tank, the paper pleats located inside of the filter’s metal canister will fill up quickly and expand, cutting off the fuel supply to your engine. This problem can be temporarily solved by swapping your contaminated fuel filter with a fresh one to help you limp back to home port.

Diesel boats typically have both primary and secondary external fuel filters, so remember to carry a few spares.

HANDHELD VHF AND EMERGENCY ANTENNA Nowadays, almost everyone communicates on their cell phones when out on the water.

But what happens when you’re out of range of the closest cell tower? The VHF marine radio is still the primary tool for boat-to-boat communications, as well as reaching the USCG in case of an emergency. I have been onboard numerous vessels where the VHF unit or the antenna had a radical failure. My handheld, waterproof VHF (with spare battery pack) has saved the day on more than one occasion, as has my spare VHF antenna.

PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACON (PLB) My PLBs come with me whenever I travel out on the briny, either home or away trips. One lives on my boat, while the other is a permanent fixture in my travel bag. These beacons are personally registered by each user with NOAA and when activated, send out a both a 406 MHz satellite signal and a 121 MHz homing beacon for search and rescue teams to find you ASAP. No subscription service is required and these diminutive electronic wonders can be a real lifesaver when danger becomes an unwelcome passenger on your boat. I currently own two ACR PLB units, as well as a smaller Oceansignal PLB1, that is no larger than a deck of playing cards. All are reasonably priced…so go get one!

SPARE SIGNAL HORN How many times have you hit the horn button on your vessel and it was suddenly silent?

Salt spray and corroded electrical connections have caused the demise of many onboard boat horns. The simple temporary solution is to carry a spare and I do that in the form of Innovative Lighting’s Electronic Sports Horn. This low-cost option uses solid state electronics and is waterproof, shock resistant, includes a handy mounting cradle, is powered by a 9V battery and meets USCG requirements for a signaling device onboard.
