MIAMI VICES-BOATING TRENDS FROM THE 2022 MIAMI BOAT SHOW

Raguso If you are a boat show junkie, like I have been for the better part of the last five decades, the one event that you shouldn’t miss, given its location in the middle of February for northeasterners like us, is the Miami International Boat Show. After last year’s MIBS was cancelled due to covid issues, I was able to attend the 2022 edition of this annual event a few weeks back. There were unique revelations at the show that portend some interesting changes for us down the road, both in the short term and in the near future. Let’s take a closer look at some of these boating trends that are coming to a marina near you soon.

IS THE STERN-DRIVE (INBOARD/OUTBOARD) DEAD? One of the most interesting sport boat trends that was obvious on the Miami Convention Center floor was the relative absence of a once-ubiquitous item…stern-drive powered hulls. Historically the mainstay of the sport boat world, I/O’s have been withering on the vine the past few years with the introduction and evolution of reliable, high-horsepower, four-cycle outboard power. Browsing through the Formula, Cobalt and SeaRay booths confirmed this hypothesis that stern-drive powerplants are on thin ice. From what I could see on display from these name-brand boat builders, anywhere from 75%-to-80% of the boats in their respective fleets were outboard-powered craft. When I queried one of the sales reps at the Cobalt booth, he opined that, “our Florida customers like the extra room onboard created by the outboard sport boat design. They have moved on from I/O’s in a big way, so the builders have listened, recognized this trend and are now delivering more outboard designs that are extremely popular down here.”

Whether this translates up north remains to be seen, but with an increased number of outboard sport boat designs becoming more available from a variety of manufacturers, this trend is sure to migrate to northeast waters. Outboards feature easy maintenance; can be taken off the boat in less than ½-hour with a few bolts and connections; create more space under the cockpit sole for added fuel, water, or storage; can be easily upgraded or replaced; and don’t have a huge hole going through the back of your transom that can potentially sink your boat if the rubber seal springs a leak.

SAY GOODBYE TO GENSETS? The Fathom e-Power system, developed by Brunswick’s Advanced Systems Group (ASG), eliminates the traditional diesel or gasolinepowered genset. A first-of-its-kind boat electrification system used on the SeaRay SLX 400 OB model, Fathom e-Power will replace a generator and includes a Mastervolt lithium-ion battery pack, consisting of four high-capacity marinized batteries. With intuitive power management, the Fathom e-Power system is capable of powering your boat’s accessory systems for approximately eight hours without needing recharging from shore power or your alternators.

Using the sophisticated yet easy-to-operate user interface, you can monitor power consumption and charge levels. Fathom e-Power provides a convenient way to enjoy all the features of your boat for a longer, quieter and more eco-friendly day on the water.

Future Fathom e-Power setups will be tailored to the size and needs of your boat. Going with this green solution eliminates the need to lug a 1,000-lb plus generator in the bilge; the incessant drone of it rumbling through the boat at night; having to keep a separate tank of fuel onboard; having to start it up once a week to prevent freeze-ups; and no more dangerous CO emissions. It’s lighter, usually less expensive and typically more reliable than the traditional combustion engine genset.

MULTIPLE OUTBOARDS ON LARGER BOATS Used to be, not so long ago, that the 250-to-300 HP outboards of the day were limited to powering 30-to-35 foot ocean-going boats. With the advent of the Yamaha 425 XTO, the Suzuki 350 and the Mercury 400 Verado, 450 Racing V8 and the latest V-12 behemoth 600 Verado that made its debut late last year, the sky’s the limit. The Miami show was replete with numerous 40-to-55 foot fishing and pleasure boats sporting quad and quint outboard setups surpassing 2,400 horsepower on the transom! Names like Scout, Yellowfin, Century, Invincible, Grady-White, Contender, Jupiter, Regulator, Viking’s Valhalla and others are all in the big outboard boat sweepstakes.

These builders can’t make these supersized boats fast enough, with waiting lists that are two-to-three years out…that’s incredible!

And these boats aren’t cheap, costing somewhere in the 1-to-3 million dollar range. Factor in some supply chain issues like builders not being able to get engines, resin, wiring harnesses, gauges and other requisite parts to put these high-end boats together, and that exacerbates the Keynesian economics price/demand curve where it’s a seller’s market to the max. As Viking’s President Pat Healy recently stated, “It’s a great time to be in the boating industry.”No kidding, especially when you can charge just about whatever you want for your product and someone out there with deep pockets will pay it. This is turn drives the huge boat market prices through the roof, which is great if you are selling, but not so great if you are buying. There are a few builders breaking the 60-foot barrier with their outboard designs, so stay tuned for more luxury boat insanity.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES Although we mentioned lithium-ion batteries earlier as the heart of Brunswick’s Fathom e-Power’s genset replacement model, lithium-ion batteries deserve their own separate boating trends mention.

This is the wave of the future and as the prices of these unique power cells come down due to competition and availability, you will see them with increased frequency. The reasons for this are many, but it can be distilled down to a few basic factoids: lithium-ion batteries are lighter, more powerful, last longer, can be recharged as much as 10 times more than lead/acid types and release more of its stored power compared to traditional deep cycle or AGM batteries. These attributes are especially useful for a vessel’s house electrical system or 24v/36v trolling motor power setups for sport fishing boats. There’s a lot more to say here about the benefits of lithium-ion batteries, but we’ll save that for a future Boats4Sale column.
