GUIDE TO BUYING A USED BOAT

By Capt. John N. Raguso I’ve always believed that the best value in the boating marketplace is to purchase a late model year (3-to-5 years old) vessel that is still covered by a transferrable hull and engine warranty. An experienced boat that meets these parameters offsets some of your potential purchase downside in case of a catastrophic hull or engine failure. It also eliminates the usual 25%-30% depreciation hit that new boat owners experience when taking their new pride and joy out on its first trip.

This historical analogy is somewhat neutralized by the latest covid-19 pandemic market conditions, where “supply chain issues”have caused the market to defy normal economic patterns, creating an almost unprecedented seller’s market for both new and used boats of any age, variety or condition. Locating the used boat of your dreams is made even more difficult in today’s marketplace, where quality experienced boats are extremely hard to find. Since many new boat dealers are now on an “allocation system”when ordering 2022 models from manufacturers that they represent, they are more active than ever searching for used boats to sell, thus driving up market prices, courtesy of basic Keynesian market economics (i.e., when demand increases and supply decreases, prices rise…no kidding!). The good news for you is that the pages of Boats4Sale magazine are loaded with used boat opportunities, so you are in the right place to begin your search.

So where do we start? Assuming that you have decided what boat type piques your interest (center console, sport cabin, dual console/bowrider, express cuddy, open skiff, flybridge cruiser, etc.) and the powerplant type and quantity that you prefer (inboard, outboard, I/O; with single, twins, trips, quads, etc.), I’ve compiled the following checklist that should steer you in the right direction in your pursuit of finding a used boat that meets your expectations and budget.

Budget What is your budget and how are you going to finance the purchase? Although interest rates are at historic lows, used boats typically command a higher premium due to the risk/reward concept that banks and finance companies embrace. It’s realistic to add another 10%-to-15% to the initial purchase price for miscellaneous costs like sales tax and registration fees, transportation, bottom painting, dockage, minor repairs, engine maintenance, electronics upgrades, insurance and such.

Hull •Check for any obvious imperfections in the hull above the waterline, like rough, uneven or wavy surfaces in the gelcoat; an overly dull fiberglass finish; discolorations; cracks, gouges, etc.

•Inspect the running bottom for cracks, obvious repairs, gouges, chips or lines that aren’t perfectly straight. Blisters or “pock marks”are caused by osmosis, which is water intrusion into the laminate below the waterline and is a real PITA and potentially expensive to fix. A plastic hammer tapped along the running bottom can sometimes catch these problems by the telltale sounds.

•What type of bottom paint was used before? Ablative or self-polishing paint wears off over time and doesn’t build up crusty layers that can rob speed and reduce anti-fouling capabilities like many modified epoxy coatings.

•If it’s an outboard powered boat, check the transom area for cracks, blisters or any evidence of water intrusion. Yank on the back of each outboard cover and give it a good tug.

If there’s any flex in the transom, that’s usually a bad sign and indicative of potentially expensive transom repairs.

•Check all of the through-hull fittings and sea cocks, both above and below the waterline for a tight seal and functional operation (open/close all fitting handles and valves).

•Copy the hull I/D number and reach out to the manufacturer to see if there were any warranty claims on this boat.

Powerplant(s) Remove the cowling/cover and visually inspect the engine for overall condition and external corrosion, including all hoses, belts and electrical connections.

•Pull the dipstick and check the engine oil’s condition and level. It should be relatively clear and free from any metal filings. If the oil looks milky, water may have entered the crankcase, indicating the possibility of serious mechanical problems.

•Check the engine’s gearcase oil and look for the same indicators.

•Inspect the lower unit for any obvious gouges, bent skeg, missing paint, or dings on the prop.

•If it’s an outboard or I/O, check the tilt and trim functions, both at the throttle and at the engine cowling (outboard only).

•Copy the engine I/D number and reach out to the manufacturer to ascertain the maintenance and repair history.

•Check the engine hours on the tach.

Electrical System, Safety System & Electronics •What is the age of each piece of electronics? Check the operation of each, in addition to all wiring.

Look for corrosion on the unit inputs, end plugs and/or cracked insulation on the cables.

Does the chartplotter include a nav chip?

•Check all bilge pumps for manual and automatic operation.

•Inspect all 12VDC/120VAC accessory panels and function-check each switch/breaker for operation.

•Inspect the batteries, switches and wiring. How old are the batteries and what type?Look for corrosion on the terminals and the integrity of the power cables.

Overall Cosmetic Condition •Inspect all cushions for stains, water intrusion, mold, stitching integrity, discolorations, etc.

•Is there a musky/mildew smell in any enclosed areas (console, head, cabin, anchor locker)?

•Check the bilge area for water, stains, corrosion and/or any electrical or mechanical hardware or components that are exposed.

•Inspect the corners, joints, cockpit sole, bulkheads and radius curves for gelcoat cracks and pock marks.

•Look for any signs of corrosion in the vessel’s aluminum or stainless steel bow rails, hand rails and tower legs.

•Are the canvas curtains clear and waterproof ? Check the function of the zippers and snaps.

Sea Trial This is the final step in the used boat buying process, buy it’s way too complex a topic to summarize here, so we’ll cover this in detail in next month’s issue.

Don’t Be Afraid to Get Some Help Since I try to practice what I preach, my last three boat purchases were used boats which I repowered with new outboard engines, adhering to my MBA’s core belief of PVR, also known as the price/value relationship. My two current rides, a 1999 EdgeWater 185CC and a 2006 EdgeWater 228CC were both repowered with new Mercury four stroke outboards (115 ProXS and 250 V8 respectively) prior to the pandemic and are running absolutely great, with zero mechanical or electrical issues. Before I purchased each of these EdgeWaters from reputable boat dealers, I secured the services of both a hull and an engine surveyor for the 228 CC and an engine surveyor for the 185CC. I consider this to be a relatively inexpensive “insurance policy”to get a second set of professional eyes on the subject, just to make sure that I didn’t miss something in my exhaustive initial inspection. Purchasing a used boat from a dealer will typically cost you more money, but you’ll also get a warranty on the equipment, especially valuable if the original warranties have expired. If you are buying a used boat from a private owner, you need to be sure that the boat wasn’t sunk or damaged, and that the title is clear before finalizing the deal. Private purchases are usually covered by the “tail light warranty”…once you leave the seller’s driveway, the warranty expires. Happy New Year!
