The Snowdon Aviary follows Cedric Price’s oeuvre as the architect-facilitator. It follows his design of the Fun Palace for Joan Littlewood, a project never realized but intended to be a communal and adaptable “laboratory of fun” for London’s East End. Much of Price’s work can be interpreted as a scaled-up playground jungle gym – metal frame structures articulate abstract spaces, though the use of these spaces ie left to the imagination of the user. Joy is a primary principle of his work. Questions arise when structures like the Aviary are made as spaces not just for humans, but for animals.

Price’s abstract vertical projections, finished in gunite, are not ideal breeding conditions for birds familar with organic rock formations. From the onset of design, however, it is clear that there was nothing “natural” about a zoo enclosure which would house many birds from many geographic regions who would not normally live together. The Aviary is Price’s response to the need for an entirely original and artificial habitat. The birds, not the humans (who are sequestered to a wooden walkway), are the organizational forces behind this habitat-to-be.

Charles Mingus, “Solo/Duet Players”

The “Basquiat x Mingus” compositions synthesize visual, musical, and verbal symbols significant to both artists: ornithology, ballet, echoes, screaming men and women, jazz instruments, and the sense of paranoia and anxiety in an urban environment.

HALLWAY STYX Hallway Styx acts as a threshold space between street and alley, public and private, social and commercial, “life” and “afterlife.” The undulating form of the hallway and benches are reminiscent of flowing magma. Spaces are divided into viewing areas, eating areas, and lounging/socialization areas. The roof is made of gradiating red-colored glass, creating tension near the middle of the journey. The experience of walking beneath red glass panes and between idle observers creates the narrative of a wayfarer passing through a hall of judgement.

RECYCLE = FORAGE The forager’s basket makes steps to redeem the excess and waste associated with Christmas celebrations. The function and construction of the basket—made only with paper and ribbon; zero tape, glue, or chemical binders—harkens back to the resourceful and low-waste ingenuity of our ancestors.

The weave-in-weave construction creates a perfect balance between flexibility and rigidity. The final basket is open on either end, allowing carriage of long twigs or stalks. The slight divot near the center allows for the carriage of loose items without item loss.
