NOVEMBER 2014

Why’s it so warm still? At this rate I’ll be wearing my green velour mankini to Bonfire Night. I’m assured it’s completely fireproof, so I’ll be able to participate in this centuries old demonstration of religious separatism in both safety and style. Christmas is almost here, if you believe what TV ads tell us, and the addition of some red tinsel and suitable weather will undoubtedly make it ideal attire for when they fire up Brighton’s festive lights on Thu 13 Nov. It might be prudent to stock up on Easter eggs as well, just to beat the rush. ALAN DAVIES PAGE 28

Birdman

CINECITY Thur 20 Nov - Sun 7 Dec Brighton’s biggest film festival returns this November as CINECITY celebrates its 12th anniversary. Showcasing some of this year’s finest international films, along with sneak previews to upcoming pictures, premieres and cinema classics from the CINECITY archive, the team have put together yet another year of sensational filmmaking talent. Their top event this year is ‘BERG’, a free exhibit with the University of Brighton starting on Sat 20 Nov, and will carry on into late Dec. This film-set installation offers an immersive and cinematic environment, complemented by sound design from renowned musician and composer Barry Adamson. A boarding house in out of season Brighton is the background for this strange, disturbing and darkly comic drama. Published in 1964, BERG is described as the best novel ever set in Brighton. A phenomenal series of spectacular special events and screenings will take place across the city with the festival’s opening night picture presenting the UK premiere of ‘Birdman’, on Nov 20 at Duke of York’s Picturehouse. This American black comedy film was co-written, produced, and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, and stars Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts. A faded star from a superhero franchise is attempting to revitalise his career with a return to the stage. The walls between fantasy and reality begin to crumble, in this treatise on the seductions (and differences) of fame and status.

Another treat on offer forms part of the BFI’s Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder UK–wide season. CINECITY will present pop-up screenings of François Truffaut’s ‘Fahrenheit 451’ amongst the empty shelves of the old Brighton Reference Library. This makes a poignant setting for the classic dystopian tale of a society where books are outlawed. Two other acclaimed science fiction texts, ‘The Midwich Cuckoos’ and Kay Dick’s ‘They: A Sequence of Unease’ will also be revisited with special one-off events. CINECITY are again giving an opportunity for local filmmakers to contribute their work to be displayed as part of the event which will be shown at their Brighton Screenings strand. Many of these films were selected through open submissions to the festival. This year also sees the festival join forces with FILM CITY, an initiative supporting film in Brighton & Hove. With walk-through film sets, screenings with live scores, pop-up screenings and for the very first time in Brighton; Edible Cinema, CINECITY 2014 presents a real cinema of the senses – all ready to be experienced.

For full details of their schedule, visit: www.cine-city.co.uk Cinecity 2014 runs on Thu 20 Nov – Sun 7 Dec 2014, in venues across Brighton.

REBEL BINGO

BRIGHTON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Having travelled from London to New York, from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro the phenomenon of Rebel Bingo is coming to Brighton and Concorde 2 on Thurs 27 Nov. Identifying itself as a “new, mutant form of Bingo” – it’s a cocktail that’s equal parts stage show, club night and bingo. The basic premise is the same as regular, non-Rebel bingo you have a bingo card and marker and numbers are read out by an MC, with prizes on the line to be collected on stage. The ‘Rebel’ aspect comes from the fact that it’s played in a club atmosphere, and as such the venue is louder and contestants are less sober than your average bingo player. As you can imagine as time goes on the game gets more and more challenging (and entertaining), those who mistakenly believe they have winning tickets will be booed off-stage for being unable to complete a game usually played by octogenarians.

Once again our city streets will see the sky above ablaze with colour and festive magic. The Brilliant Brighton Christmas lights are returning, bigger and better than ever, unplanned blackouts permitting.

Once again there’s a free-to-enter Christmas raffle, which offers everyone there a chance to win some amazing prizes. This will be the largest seasonal display of lights on the South Coast. HOME FOR CHRISTMAS New Independent Film

Jump Start Productions, an independent film production company based in Brighton, is about to announce the release of Home For Christmas. The film follows the story of Beth Prince (April Pearson). She lives by the seaside, works in a charming old cinema and has a boyfriend who is so debonair and charming she can’t believe her luck!! Desperate to hear ‘I love you’ for the first time Beth takes matters into her own hands, then instantly wishes she hadn’t. Written by award-winning author Cally Taylor - a regular at Brighton’s Duke of Yorks Picturehouse cinema - the book was picked up by Duke of Yorks employee and co-owner of Jump Start Productions, Nathalie Grace. Peepers An installation by Maisie Broadhead Artist Maisie Broadhead has received praise throughout her career, winning acclaim across the UK for her exhibitions such as ‘Seduced By Art: Photography Past and Present’, which was the National Gallery’s first major photography exhibition. This autumn sees the Jerwood Open Makers winner bring her work to Brighton with ‘Peepers,’ a new installation at the Royal Pavilion as part of the Pavilion Contemporary series, running from October until 1 March of 2015. Entitled ‘Peepers’, the work explores themes of voyeurism. Visitors to the installation are made to feel like figures in a doll’s house as giant photographic faces watch and stare through windows. In her own words, Broadhead “aims to turn the gaze from the viewer to become the viewed”. Using the scale of the Royal Pavilion and the historical context of its famous inhabitants, she uses the installation to make comment on our modern voyeuristic obsession with celebrity and royalty. This is not Broadhead’s first experience with our city, having studied a BA in 3D Design from Brighton University, when she recognised the Pavilion as a “visual icon of Brighton”. However it is her work for Pavilion Contemporary that has given her an insight into the history of the Pavilion, specifically the character of King George IV who constructed the extravagant pleasure palace between 1787 and 1823. Through discussion with David Beevers - the Royal Pavilion Keeper - Maisie Broadhead became interested with what she calls the “fascinating conflict between how George IV seems to have wanted to be perceived, to actually how he was perceived”. The installation’s attitude of scrutiny inspects the juxtaposition between the “confident, opinionated” King George IV, who constructed the lavish and loud Royal Pavilion and the older, more

Pavilion Contemporary 2014 25 Oct 2014 to 1 Mar 2015 By Elliot Tyers private King George IV, who later became a recluse in the same Pavilion hiding from the outside gaze. The Pavilion Contemporary programme - which was inaugurated in 2010/2011 - has seen two previous commissions: ‘A Dark Day In Paradise’ by Clare Twomey and ‘The Lost Pagodas’ by Geraldine Pilgrim. With each commission, the artists are tasked to create imagery that is inspiring amongst the already impressive environment of the Royal Pavilion, as well as challenge perceptions of the history of the palace. To this end, Broadhead utilised a range of artistic skills. After research was completed, the ten-month process involved prop and costume making in period Georgian style, followed by a choreographed photo-shoot. Then digital work was performed on the images prior to printing and lighting set up was installed on location to support the images. Although a large amount of the work on this project involved photography, Maisie Broadhead identifies herself as “an artist and image-maker rather than a photographer” – noting the variety of mediums and materials that went into the 3D nature of ‘Peepers’. Broadhead does acknowledge that it has “taken a long time to feel comfortable in the shoes of an ‘artist’, often feeling like… a fraud.” ‘Peepers’ provides an insight into ideas of fakery and illusion under observation that takes from both Broadhead’s experience as well as the history of the Pavilion. ‘Peepers’ creates an unsettling sensory and emotive experience in the palace’s unique space. The Royal Pavilion’s Creative Programmer Nicole Coleby notes, “this commission will transform the visitor’s experience of the Music Room, and provoke historical reflection as well as commenting on contemporary society.” www.brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk | www.maisiebroadhead.com

Little Dragon Straight outta Gothenburg!

By Stuart Rolt

Scandinavian electro-soul superstars Little Dragon have been enjoying a marked rise in their stock this year. Bridging the fault-line between commerciality and experimentalism, band mates Yukimi Nagano, Erik Bodin, Fredrik Källgren Wallin and Håkan Wirenstrand brilliantly employ rhythmic variations and odd textures, with a constant air of self-awareness. They might be extraordinarily clever in what they produce, but won’t be rubbing our noses in it. There’s certainly a Little Dragon shaped hole in the lexicon of modern music, and perhaps the world is now waking up to the Gothenburg four piece. “There was a time when we didn’t at all imagine such a thing,” singer Nagano tells me. “We sort of saw ourselves as musicians and writers, but we didn’t really have that confidence to be like: ‘This is what will happen to us!’”

1996, but now their momentum is becoming unstoppable. They’ve signed to Because Music, the springboard for bands like London Grammar and Metronomy, and a new album is capturing the public’s imagination. This release, the nimble, futuristic-sounding Nabuma Rubberband, sees an evolving mix of R&B, electro, pop, jazz and dance, underpinning the unearthly vocals of their unique front-woman. This fourth LP is more adventurous, but remains deliriously catchy. With odd game show-styled interludes, strings from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and spacious, lush arrangements, its 12 songs swing from the understated to the truly funked out.

Fond of singing since her childhood, it was always something she felt comfortable doing. As with many pop stars, she grew up in an environment filled with music. “I sang along to anything and everything on the radio. I just loved music.”

Some of it might be challenging, but occasionally confounding the listener has always been a staple of the great band meme. “…and having a vibe! I always feel it’s noticeable when people have session musicians in their band. When there’s a good chemistry between people, you can feel that on stage. They know that person’s language with how they play. You know each other and you’re relaxed with each other, and you play together in a way you couldn’t do with strangers.”

With an artful and clever look at how pop music should be constructed, Nagano drew attention after involvement with Gorillaz’s platinum album, Plastic Beach. This saw her beguiling smoky vocal talents set alongside Lou Reed, Mark E. Smith, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, De La Soul and Mick Jones. Their rise may have been gradual for a band formed in

The Internet is a technology Little Dragon embraced enthusiastically, perhaps more than most. Early on, Nagano realised the potential of MySpace for more than looking at cats and ugly fonts. Realising social media was a portal for the overlooked, she’s been able to communicate with, and view the work of, countless geographically remote artists and designers.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 13 ]

“All of a sudden there was this was this whole network of people. Just as much as there were up and coming bands, there was up and coming imagers and visual artists. I’ve met a lot of people online, even the guy who did our second album cover. Hideyuki Katsumata.” Without it, the band themselves might not have the public profile they enjoy today. “That’s the beauty of it. I think if you have an interest, everything’s in front of you to take.” This year’s album has seen the band has significantly dented the charts, as well as delighting critics, on both sides of the Atlantic. So was there a lot of pressure to produce something so wonderful? “I think there was… Not from outside, but from ourselves. Especially when you’ve been on the road so long and you haven’t written anything. It’s like you’re doing shows, shows, shows and it’s a different beast when you come home and you’re like: ‘it’s time to write!’”

8 November Justin Currie Tickets: £18.50

So the commercial breakthrough in Britain and the US is beginning to happen. As we’re speaking the band have arrived in Columbus, Ohio, Nagano enjoying a beautiful Autumn day, surrounded by yellow and red leaves, suburban looking American houses and a few students C in college sweaters. It would seem she’s also enjoying the M US tour. “It’s good, we’re visiting a lot of places we haven’t Y been to in a while, like yesterday was Louisville, Kentucky CM and before that was Philadelphia.”

9 November The Delines - In the Cafe Bar Tickets: £12

MY

Strangely similar success is not as forthcoming at home. Whilst the Swedish bands generally have an innate CY understanding of classic marketable pop, Little DragonCMY has chosen a less traditional path. Nagano’s amused by my firm belief every band in Sweden knows each K other, perhaps socialising, living in the same apartments and high-fiving each other when passing in the street, “I’m a little detached to it, because I’m not home that often. It’s not like me, Lykke Li and Jose all hanging out together. I feel like everyone’s a bit: ‘it’s cold!’ and keep to themselves in their own little world. I find out more about Swedish music when I’m abroad, which is just a bit weird.”

17 November Iron & Wine - Solo Acoustic Tickets: £19

The pressures of fame aren’t playing on her mind thus far. She’s still able to walk down a hometown street unharnessed. But even if people do recognise her, it’s not an intimidating experience. ”I guess we’re not that kind of band. On this tour you can feel, after shows, you’ve fans waiting for you. But when we’re walking around on the street at home? No. It happens mostly in LA.” Even with less time to stop and take stock of their situation, Nagano’s still aware of the impact of their music has on people. “You can’t really step away from it. It’s so gratifying. We get to do what we love, without any compromises, and there are people who are into it.”

Little Dragon play Brighton’s Corn Exchange on Mon 17 Nov, 2014. Their album, Nabuma Rubberband, is out now.

TUSKS Psychedelia bites back!

By Holly Cozens

“ Image By Steve Brown and Laura Brown Now, I’m sure everyone at one time or another has felt a little envy emulating out of them - sometimes with great resistance when it comes to those we admire in music. Whether we yearn for just a fraction of their talent, feel a superficial need to lust after their extravagant lifestyles or declare ourselves style-less compared to their impeccably prepared appearance, I think we have all had a little of the green-eyed glint at some point. When I went to meet Brighton band ‘Tusks’ one afternoon at the Nowhere Man Café on Upper North Street, I had a similar glint just resting underneath the surface. Not necessarily for any of these earlier reasons, but for the simple fact that this is a young group of three guys who maintain an air of relaxed effortlessness in their attitude, not only to their music but their future.

It all started when guitarist/singer Tom Sullivan and drummer/ singer Nick Klar met at college in Chelmsford, Essex and moved down to Brighton, where they met George Boorman – bassist/ singer (well he sings quietly to himself anyway, laugh the other two). A year later and they have been gigging for the majority of that time in various locations around Sussex and London. With a reluctance to limit their sound to one particular movement, Tusks are clearly influenced by their love for psychedelic rock (which Tom claims is contributed to the fact that he listens a lot to this genre at the moment and through some kind of musical osmosis, it filters into the songs he writes), whilst also drawing on the music of those who may have had a part in their musical upbringing.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 15 ]

Since the arrival of the third band member (George), Tom describes how their sound went from “soft psychy songs – a bit Radiohead-y and mellower” to “really heavy and grungy. Like Tame Impala and Nirvana but blended together with other influences thrown in there.” Nick also quips about how Tom’s past obsession with Muse has definitely affected a lot of his pedal choices when playing too. At this point, I notice how unabashed they all are about their lack of showiness and listening to them talk about the music they make is enjoyable as it comes from a very organic place. There is an air of similarity in the answers to a lot of my questions, exposing a natural bond that these boys seem to possess which I can only assume will go on to be an asset in their bright future. Definitively labeling their genre seems unimportant but George and the other two are definitely aware of their sound -

ut t is good abo “I think wha c li e d e is psych what we do e th s a lot on music draw to are really in 60s but we a ff so it’s like our 90s stu is re e two. Th mix of the o h you can d only so muc d n edelic sou with psych y other grung so by doing g n ri b you can stuff means to l a er materi in all this oth tie into it.”

Tusks – named after a Fleetwood Mac song – are just one of the new and upcoming bands to be making themselves known in different venues around Brighton. There is a new generation of acts edging onto the radar and the fact that they are either friends or take part in a little incestuous musical activity - Nick and George also play in other band ‘Bird Skulls’ and George also in ‘Abbatoir Blues’ – solidifies for me their dedication and enjoyment for music and less to their egos. After a incredibly popular gig at Bleach on London Road, where they supported The Wytches on the night of their album launch party, things can only get more exciting for these very genuine lads. soundcloud.com/tusks-band www.facebook.com/tusksband

Bleach

Nine Below Zero are back on tour with their four original band members. They’ll be only performing songs from the first three albums: Live At The Marquee, Don’t Point Your Finger and Third Degree, all of which have been remastered and re-released by Universal Music.

She’s a hip-hop lyricist, playwright, poet and novelist, and she does it all rather well. Since winning the Ted Hughes poetry prize in 2013 for Brand New Ancients, a narrative work full of heroes, hopes and hardships, she’s been recognised by the Mercury prize for her phenomenal Everybody Down album.

With videos packed full of tiny instruments and crappy props everywhere, there’s something endearing about the sweet cutesy lo-fi world of We Were Evergreen.

The band have been flying the flag for nearly four decades, acquiring something of a fanatical following along the way. Music genres have come and gone, but they’ve always stayed true to delivering top quality rhythm and blues. Other appearances this year has seen them in superb form, proving there’s still a place today for their good-time music. www.theoldmarket.com

All this attention demonstrates England is finally developing love and respect for the 27-year-old Londoner and her playful obsession with powerful language. Now she’s presenting us with a new collection of work. This is as real as it gets.

The cheery tones of Towards, their immaculately produced debut album, is a triumph of multi-instrumental alt-pop. Across its twelve tracks is an enthralling range of sonic variety, whilst still managing to remain relatively understated.

Nearly one of pop’s great MIAs, this cheeky pair had a tough time recording their second album, and a tougher time hearing the critic’s reactions. This year they reflected the promise of their debut, with disco-dripping single ‘Wrong Club’. Now the duo is touring the UK, their first proper shows in three years, in support of new single, ‘Do It Again’. There’s also a new album ‘Super Critical’ out. Recorded in Ibiza and co-produced by Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor, it offers an encouraging return for a band that has been gone too long.

The Haunt

After finally releasing the fan-funded ‘Meteorites’, their first studio effort in half a decade, the Bunnymen are on the road. Whilst the new release might be the band’s most soul-searching and personal to date, we should take time to consider the breadth and influence their back catalogue possesses.

This Brooklyn-based rapper is one of the most lyrically-gifted and politically insightful artists of the last 20 years. Finding fame after collaborating with Kanye West, Kweli’s landmark solo material delivers top-tier lyricism and demonstrations of his ability to rhyme over almost any beat.

The luminescent post-punk/proto-indie output of their 80s incarnation provided the inspiration for bands like Coldplay and Radiohead. That’s not to say their 35-year career is keeping them locked in the past, the familiar epic, guitar riffs have no trouble staying relevant to this day.

One of rap’s most in-demand performers, there’s no denying he leads by example. Whether in conversation with political activists, producing genre-straddling work with Idle Warship or encouraging us all to examine our lives and engage with the world, Kweli is that rare breed of global star that has something significant to say. www.thehauntbrighton.co.uk

After his wonderful debut album, ‘Beautiful Desolation’, stacked up adoration from the critics earlier this year, this Brighton resident is now proving his worth to the masses. Dreamy vocals drift across a background of powerful instrumentation, as Saunders and his band gently rewrite the lexicon of British song-writing. There have been comparisons to Radiohead and Jeff Buckley, certainly the ambition, musicianship and clarity of purpose are all there. But we need to overlook the majesty of his inspirations and appreciate just how good he really is. Expect perfectly layered sonic waves, unwieldy song titles and something rather beautiful. www.thegreendoorstore.co.uk

The Dub Pistols are hitting the road again. Loved by anyone that witnesses their incendiary live performances, they combine dub, hip-hop, ska and punk. With a reputation that balances between critical acclaim and notoriety, the band has just released their sixth album, Return of the Pistoleros. All brought together by legendary Barry Ashworth, this band are true rock outlaws. With a revolving door of live guest vocalists, a hearty party-hard attitude and a brace of great tunes all add to the dynamic thrill of the Dub Pistols’ live experience. Catch it if you can. www.concorde2.co.uk

Simultaneously celebrating the golden ages of both the British Empire and hip-hop, he’s bizarrely been name-checked by Michael Gove as something of an inspiration. Where his cabinet fan might harbour odd ideas about education, Mr. B is committed to illuminating and inspiring with his hip-hip history lessons. Enter a world of cricket flannels, pipes, tea abuse and kissing in porn, this is where Sir John Gielgud meets Chuck D.

With a great ear for a cracking synth-pop tune and unerring appreciation of joyful theatrics, Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have been hard at it since 1985. The costumes have inevitably toned down, Bell conceding PE knickers and a Christmas decoration may not be suitable attire for a man of his years, but many core Erasure themes remain. Down the line there have been dalliances with experimentation and the obligatory covers work, yet they’ve never strayed far from their remit of supplying bright and breezy anthems. Surely there’s a place in everyone’s heart for some bouncing pop?

With a recording schedule contradicting the fierce urgency of their live shows; tech-metalgrime-rock hybrid Hacktivist finally released a new track this August. Although, as yet, there’s no word on the impending debut album, they’re on the road this Nov / Dec, headlining the ‘Download Freezes Over’ tour, which features Sheffield metal-core act Dead Harts and Guildford’s The One Hundred. Let us rock!

This Kettering four-piece mix scuzzy glam stomp, dreamy folk and droning psych-rock, with a 2014 style. Don’t call it ‘retro’ though! Temples might look akin to 70s garage rockers, cast eternally on an acid trip of some magnitude, but they are nothing but forward looking.

Tight rhymes, crushing riffs and jagged tempos all combine in a sensual blur of pure energy. They might not be one of the UK’s most prolific bands, but their live shows are some of the best. www.audiobrighton.com

Founded a couple of years ago, this four piece all share a love for the work of psychedelic visionaries, like Huxley, Leary and Kenneth Anger. They might appear to be far out, but their convention breaking song structures and imaginative wordplay are a perfect antidote to pedestrian pop nonsense. www.concorde2.co.uk

The Hobo Bonobo Say hello wave goodbye

Like some revolting old sausage dog coming back for another lick of still warm spew, then vomiting it up all over again, the train returned to Brighton station to disgorge its sweaty load. Piggy eyes swivel, “where’s the sea?” The sea, the sea, everyone wants the sea. The sea licked its lathery lips in foamy anticipation as it cast its eye over the filthy shoreline. “Soon , soon.” it burbled to itself. Then came the rain, more rain than anyone could remember. Malevolent lightening lashed out indiscriminately, while bitching winds picked up hipster children and women in clackey heels walking pointless dogs and dashed them into the slimy shingle. The sea broiled in glee as mermen in bloated tampons armour snatched drunken stags caught pissing at the water’s edge and dragged them down into the plastic choked depths. War like waves tossed great reeking heaps of stinking sewage into crowded seafront bars. One great wave carrying vengeful mermaids in barnacled shopping trolley chariots thundered up West Street. Fish hook fingers snagged swaggering provincials and clucking pink hens and stole them from the land. Honour restored, the sea becalmed itself. An oily film of cheap cosmetics and rancid chip fat was all that told of the day the sea got even.

DRILL FESTIVAL

Drill Brighton recently added over 30 more artists to its already stellar line up. The festival, curated by Wire and Brighton’s very own One Inch Badge, brings over 100 bands, artists, films, talks and exhibitions to 14 different venues, across four days on Thu 4 – Sun 7 Dec 2014. The massive four-day event will see a multitude of incredible artists performing, including Wire, SWANS, Savages, Toy, Courtney Barnett, Gold Panda and The Wytches. Italian 70’s progressive rock legends Claudio Simonetti’s GOBLIN will be performing their soundtrack from the classic horror film Suspiria, along with shows from Japanese instrumental rockers MONO, East India Youth, Telegram, and a one-off world exclusive collaboration between Wire and SWANS! Other highlights include a special performance from British Sea Power with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet at All Saints Church, Young Fathers, These New Puritans, Cassetteboy Vs DJ Rubbish, Three Trapped Tigers, Esben & the Witch, Zu and Lonelady. The event also features a host of artists, talks, and films being showcases, with more shows and bands being announced over the coming weeks. In February 1980, the first phase of Wire ended at the Electric Ballroom, Camden with an infamous performance eventually released as the ‘Document and Eyewitness’ live album. It saw a band, frustrated with the confines and rules of punk and rock orthodoxy, challenging themselves and their audience with visual performance, art and none of the songs that the crowd had paid to see. It was the sound both of progress and dissolution.

The Wytches

Let’s torque about great music!

Three decades later, Wire used fragments of those aborted sketches to produce ‘Change Becomes Us’, their most confident sounding album in years, 13 tracks of classic artpop ferocity. To coincide with the release of this critically– acclaimed LP, Wire curated the initial Drill: Festival in London, the first instalment in a planned series of multi-venue festivals across the UK and beyond. More events happened in London and Seattle during 2013, with more to come in 2015 following the Brighton event next month. The concepts behind Drill Festival are simple: to challenge preconceptions of Wire. The event showcases the band’s impact on, and relationship with, groups and artists from younger generations, to connect with both new and established artists whose work they find inspiring and feel that they have a kinship with. This also opens up opportunities for one-off collaborations. This year’s festival will see Wire team up with rock titans SWANS, to perform an extended version of the ever-mutating Wire track ‘Drill’. The Brighton event will also see the return of the historic ‘Pinkflag Guitar Orchestra’, which sets Wire onstage with members of bands involved with the festival, along with local friends, allies and past collaborators. The guitarists then play an extended, improvised version of Wire’s ‘Pink Flag’ at high volume. After successful Drill Festival events in both London and Seattle, this is the biggest and most ambitious to date. “They’re very Welsh. His singing sounds like its not in English. The way he sings changes everything completely. They’re just fascinating!”

“His second album is a total classic. His ‘On My Own’ is one of the best bits of music ever. It’s like a head on collision between My Bloody Valentine and a techno record, without being either. If someone manages to do just one thing that is breath-taking in their life, they’ve got my respect for that.”

TRAAMS

“They come from Chichester, and they did some shows with us last year. I think they‘re really good, as does BBC 6 Music’s Marc Riley, who was playing their record for two weeks straight recently.”

LONELADY

“We’ve known her for years, so we have a strong personal connection with her. It’s taut, funky and minimal. She hasn’t done anything for a while, so this is a small comeback.” She’s a fantastically good guitarist, she’s so inventive…”

“It’s my other band! We have an album coming out in December. So the show will be our first in four years, and double as an album launch.”

“They’re (Wire guitarist) Matt’s band. He’s an incredible talent. It showcases a different side of what he does, they’re a bit more experimental and ‘American’. There are drop dead gorgeous tracks across all of their albums.”

HEXENSCHUSS

“This is probably one of the most obscure things on the bill. I don’t think they’ve ever played in Britain before. They’re just keyboards and drums instrumental. They’re really coming from somewhere else.”

YOUNG HUSBANDS

“A young band, they’re a guitar rock four-piece that have some great songs. Their track: ‘Constantly In Love’ was just one of those universal songs. I can’t understand why it wasn’t a worldwide hit.”

Alan Davies It’s a victory worth sharing

By Stuart Rolt

The amiable shaggy-haired comic will be familiar to millions as providing a down to earth foil to the perceived genius of Stephen Fry, on their long-running QI TV show, or as a crime-solving magician’s assistant in BBC drama series Jonathan Creek. However it had been quite a while since he’d returned to where he made his name – the stand-up circuit.

He’s only recently properly opened up about suffering family tragedy, his depression and the years of therapy peppering his real life, but it’s a safe assumption he’s a stronger and more focussed person of late. This has to be due largely to his becoming a proud father. “Kids are amazing really. Every day is different, and they’re changing all the time. There’s no time to think about anything.”

That is until 2012, which saw Davies begin flexing his muscles in a live arena again, after a break of over a decade. That show “Life is Pain” drew its concept from the tale of a child, whilst being admonished by a parent, responding: “life is pain!” This provided the springboard for a series of reflections on the nature of life and family dynamics, and an evolution in Davies’ comedy style.

Undoubtedly there’s a strong family theme to his new show. Whether discussing how his children fail to realise his food intentions or his occasional amusement from their misadventures, there’s no shortage of hilarious recollections. Titled Little Victories, the show offers another unusual mix of soul-baring confessions.

Polished, insightful and darkly funny, it was a long way from his early more laddish stand-up. There was a strikingly honest self-analysis now infusing his return to the stage. ‘Life is Pain’ was an enthralling series of reflections from Davies. Growing old, humiliation at the hands of his kids, trying to reconcile what happened during his own childhood and a complicated relationship with his father, these may be idiosyncratic themes for a comedy show, yet it was a solidly hilarious performance. Life can be pain, but that’s not to say the ironic, the inappropriate and the plain awkward situations it throws up can’t offer flashes of dark amusement.

The return to touring stemmed from a few of his projects not working out as planned. This made him realise if he put as much work into writing, he could produce at least six live shows. “It works better with a family life, as opposed to a filming schedule, which is quite unforgiving,” he tells me. “It’s different now. I think of it as a day out, I’m not drinking at the moment, so I don’t think of it as opportunity to cut loose whilst I’m out the house. It’s a nice way to work.” Perhaps it’s the significant changes to his lifestyle that prompted the change in comedy outlook. On my mind is the incident outside London’s Groucho Club in 2007, when, after a few drinks, Davies playfully tried to bite off the ear of a passer-by who’d bombarded him with profanities. I wanted to ask him about this, but decided against it. We’d already taken a break in our call, a family matter demanding immediate attention, leaving me reluctant to add to the hassles of his day. Perhaps I was just feeling soft, or was I genuinely warming to the comedian? He’d already been brutally honest with me earlier on, instilling me with a certain sense of respect.

ING IN MY “WHATEVER I’M DO MING UP LIFE , WHEN I’M CO UND TO WITH A SHOW, IS BO BE REFLECTED.”

It’s a statement of middle-aged induced torment perhaps, but even if the show doesn’t provoke understanding, it’s a cold heart that doesn’t delight in kids swearing, the perils of changing nappies or a grown man interacting with kids’ play equipment. “It’s quite personal and autobiographical now; all the material is from last year. My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and the kids are just tossers now, so I’m not getting a lot of sleep. When I put it like that, it sounds like a misery memoir, which it’s not.” Once again it’s deeply personal, achingly funny and occasionally ironic material from a comedian that’s only just beginning to reach the peak of his abilities. In the hands of lesser talent, some of these recollections could be tear-jerking, but Davies has little time for mawkishness. His life has changed, and is indeed still changing, bringing with it a new set of bizarre and painful circumstances. You get the idea his children will be bringing comic inspiration to Davies for a very long time yet. “I think they’re getting an inkling as to what I do now. When I was doing a show for Dave, there was a big poster for it at our local station. They probably think everyone’s Daddy has their picture on the wall of the Tube.” Alan Davies - Little Victories comes to Dome Concert Hall, on Sat 6 Dec 2014

TOPMAN TOPSHOP

At some point over the summer, you probably will have noticed a lot of crashing and banging going on outside of Churchill Square. No, I’m not talking about the buskers with a bin and a frying pan, thinking they are the next generation of STOMP! No, our city shopping centre has had a facelift. Furthermore, nestled nicely in the middle of it all is a brand spanking new Topshop/Topman. Now I have been a customer of this fashionable high street store for a number of years. However over the last few, fear of being escorted out by the armpits for attempting to pass myself off as someone that isn’t over 30 and no longer a size ‘teenager’ has kept me at bay. So earlier this month, you can imagine my trepidation when my colleague and I went down to try their new premium, complimentary personal shopper service. As we made our way through the shop, past selections of cool clothing and up to the exclusive suite, I already had dream items running through my head. We were greeted by the (of course) smartly dressed team, who informed us that John James would be taking care of my companion, while Olivia would be looking after me. While John James got straight on the case, already plucking looks and items out of his mind as my colleague described his want for a more smart

but still casual style, Olivia asked me what kind of outfit I was going for. As someone who is quite happy and comfortable at any time of day in her pyjamas, I decided to see if Olivia could help me with some smart but non-restrictive workwear. After a few minutes briefing on suitable garments (basically as long as it cleverly disguised my cankles), I waited in a huge changing room as she came back with a varied choice of trousers, blouses, dresses, shoes and jewellery. At this point, I would like to say that while my colleague was suited and booted within a normal amount of time, Olivia exceeded my expectations by really spending time to make sure that the mixture of my insecurities and indecision on fashion turned into a really respectable looking outfit. She understood perfectly my needs and was quick to point out those items that didn’t suit, instilling an added sense of trust that she wasn’t just humouring me. What was impressive about Topshop/Topman’s complimentary new service is that it is not only a luxury for those who love to shop and are in tune with their ‘Fashionista’ self but for all parts of the spectrum, down to those who like me, welcome just a little guidance and reassurance. The critically acclaimed Woman in Black was one of the most petrifying stage plays ever staged. Now its author Susan Hill returns with an even scarier story. Starring Andrew Lancel, Diane Keen and Robert Duncan, The Small Hand promises a new level of terror.

A poetic and epic love story spanning over 4 hundred years, Collector of Tears is told by Tanya Sealt, a young woman who cannot age until she has cried. Instead Tanya collects tears from the people she encounters during moments of radical English history.

Combining theatrical storytelling with aerial acrobatics, Naomi’s Flight follows a narrative exploring illness, loss and withdrawal. Challenging, beautiful and thoughtprovoking, this is an extraordinary account of commonplace experiences.

An art dealer comes across a derelict Edwardian house, after taking a wrong turn. He takes a closer look, but suffers a ghostly encounter. Afterwards he suffers recurring nightmares and panic attacks, so he tries to discover more about the house and its occupants.

Ultimately this hauntingly lyrical play is about humanity, human rights and the universality of love. Collector of Tears received a Peggy Ramsay Foundation Grant in 2012. An earlier version was given development time and performances at The Queens Hall Arts Centre, Hexham in 2009.

The Marlborough Theatre

The Old Market

A gripping and compulsive new play, that flies from the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workaday existence. A Top Gun pilot is grounded after becoming pregnant. Now, she flies remote-controlled drones over the Middle East. Struggling through 12-hour shifts far from the battlefield, she hunts terrorists by day and is a wife and mother by night.

Cardboard and glitter for one night only, here’s a renegade gameshow for the austerity generation. Part Gameshow, part Variety Show, part Disco… and everyone’s a winner! In a reaction to the slick and earnest high production populating the world of modern entertainment, Miss Behave presents a deliberately lo-fi, silly and audience-centric bag of fun. Ably assisted by her glamorous assistant Harriet, Miss Behave creates a world of anarchy, chaos and fun for all.

Acclaimed theatre company, 1927, make a welcome return to The Old Market for a residency. Their new show Golem, a fantastical tale of an extraordinarily ordinary man and his Golem, synchronises live performance and music, with stunning handdrawn animation, claymation and film.

Using Western values, the morality of modern military tactics and our sense of humanity, Grounded targets assumptions about war, family and what it is to be a woman. A sobering story of our times. www.brightondome.org

T&Cs: Bring your phone. Keep it ON. Think for yourself. Use your initiative. Life’s not fair. Nothing means anything. There are no rules.

One day, Robert Robertson buys a Golem. He’s apprehensive at first, but anxiety turns to excitement as it starts to make life easier. Robertson becomes more relaxed, happy and confident. Now he’s a modern man with his very own Golem, and he thinks he’s in control...

NOVEMBER OUR COUNTRY’S GOOD

YERMA

Tue 11 - Sat 15 Nov

Wed 12 Nov, 7.30pm Theatre Royal

The true story of convicts putting on a play under the guidance of an earnest young marine officer, this is a beautiful demonstration of how dignity can emerge from hopelessness. As the barriers between captors and captives break down, they start to discover each other, both onstage and behind the scenes. Our Country’s Good premiered at the Royal Court Theatre 25 years ago, before winning major awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Idealistic, vigorous and uplifting this new production by original director, Max StaffordClark, was hailed as a triumph.

HOKE’S BLUFF Sat 15 Nov Dome Studio Theatre

This Kathak interpretation of the story of Yerma filters Federico Garcia Lorca’s savage, yet lyrical, play through the beauty of Indian classical dance accompanied by live musicians. A woman’s despairing desire for motherhood becomes an obsession. Her situation, acutely at odds with what is expected of her by society, moves her to commit a terrible crime.

www.atgtickets.com/brighton

This production transplants the action from rural Spain to a contemporary British inner-city community. The timeless themes of loneliness, desire, expectation and frustration remain, now enhanced by boundary-pushing of Kathak dance. www.brightondome.org

THE MUDDY CHOIR

TWELFTH NIGHT

Sun 23 - Mon 24 Nov

Tue 25 - Sat 29 Nov Dome Studio Theatre

November 1917, and the Third Battle of Ypres lurches towards its bloody conclusion. Three young soldiers are thrust into a landscape starkly different to the playing fields of their home. When their singing causes a disturbance, they face unwelcome attention from their commanding officers. Is music their ticket away from the front, or will it prove more dangerous than bullets and gas? Commissioned and produced by Theatre Centre, The Muddy Choir is a story about boys growing up and the humanising power of music, marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. www.brightondome.org

Corn Exchange It’s a familiar underdog story we’ve all heard a million times before, about a team playing a sport we don’t understand; about winning the game; and about winning in life, whatever it takes. Hoke’s Bluff tears into clichéd high school storylines and inspiring locker room speeches, examining America’s nostalgic yearning for the simplicity and success. Through hackneyed formulas and cheap sentimentality, we find out what it means to be a real winner. But beneath the acerbic portrayal of US teen spirit, there’s a true affection for its sugary romantic notions. www.brightondome.org

A FAREWELL TO ARMS Thu 27 – Sat 29 Nov Theatre Royal

A shipwreck separates twins who begin new lives unknowingly in the same land. Disguise and deception, unrequited love and confusion set the scene for this hilarious Shakespearian comedy. Fusing vivid storytelling with director Jonathan Munby’s highly distinctive visual style, Twelfth Night includes some of Shakespeare’s best loved characters, including Malvolio, Viola, Sir Toby Belch and Orsino. Munby was nominated for an Outstanding Director with The Dog in the Manager for the Shakespeare Theatere Company and won public and critical acclaim for his productions of Sondheim’s Company and Julius Caesar. www.atgtickets.com/brighton

The Old Market Acclaimed theatre makers - imitating the dog - bring their unique theatrical vision to an adaptation of A Farewell to Arms. Fusing video projection, innovative stage design and original music, they bring Ernest Hemingway’s meditation on love and the brutality of warfare to life. Based on the author’s real-life Great War experience in Italy, it follows the story of an American ambulance driver and his relationship with a British nurse. They discover the redemptive power of love and experience the loss of innocence, as their relationship cements during this devastating conflict. www.theoldmarket.com

The Dog Hotel We check-in and order groom service at the House Of Hugo

Taking a joyous and celebratory look at all things canine, ‘The Dog Hotel’ follows doggy behaviourist and hydrotherapist Matt and Leon, on their barking-mad journey to provide the best pet care in the UK. Luxury memory foam beds, tranquil spa treatments, state-of-the-art gym facilities, a restorative hydrotherapy pool… no, this is not an inventory from the Hilton Hotel, this is a catalogue of but a few services provided by Shoreham-based couple Matt and Leon Henderson-Rood, in their five star boutique doggy hotel ‘House of Hugo’.

By Louise Linehan

that we wanna push forward in the new year, to create an even better experience.”

Pampered pooches of Brighton and surrounding areas have at long last found their ultimate nirvana in the form of the ‘House of Hugo’, or ‘The Dog Hotel’ as it is known by Factory Films and digital channel ‘Watch’. This particular boarding-house provides a vast selection of lavish and somewhat eccentric services for man’s best friend - and what is Brighton but wacky and eccentric? Understandably then, the ‘House of Hugo’ has proved to be hugely successful, with a strong clientele list, repeat custom, and a number of success stories.

Lately, the doggy day-care market has been flourishing with innovative canine-centric concepts such as the ‘Borrow My Doggy’ online match-maker and the pop-up pup café-cumcrèches found in Brighton and London. What is it then, that differentiates ‘House of Hugo’ (HOH) from the competition? “Our strapline is ‘The Ultimate Dog Experience.’ We want it to be like Disneyland for dogs, basically,” explains Leon, in an undiluted stream of consciousness. “That’s the best way to put it I think… We just wanna progress and get better, and since doing the TV series we’ve come up with a whole range of ideas

Upon the mention of their new ideas, his tone audibly changes to one of utter animation.

NNA GIVE “I DON’T WA E WAY, BUT W TOO MUCH A , E A MASSIVE IK L T O G E V HA PLAN... I CAN MASSIVE BIG T ART SAY THA HAND ON HE FIRST EVER E H T E B L IL IT W ’S THAT THE UK D IN K S IT F O EVER SEEN.”

According to Leon, who can barely contain his excitement, this new project is set to be showcased in the New Year and will be featured in their dog-u-soap TV series. For a couple who literally live, sleep and breathe dog, (yes, the Henderson-Roods do indeed sleep onsite at HOH, and are on call 24/7 to tend to every dog’s need) it isn’t unusual that the two are endlessly foraging for new and unique ideas to cater to both pet and parent. Providing this scintillating, all-singing alldancing “Disneyland for Dogs” is of utmost importance to the duo, who share an incomparable passion for all things hound.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 35 ]

Episode four of ‘The Dog Hotel’ saw the pair judging auditions, to ‘discover’ the face of their new male and female HOH signature scent. “We did an open audition like X-Factor, chose two dogs, and then got this house on Shoreham beach called the WOW house. It was amazing. We did the photo-shoot there for the publicity shots, so on the [company] postcards and posters we’ve got two different dogs for the scent.” To date, the business also incorporates a dog gym, with bespoke weight-loss programmes for the paunchier pooch, a Reiki healing programme, for those who have encountered any physical or emotional trauma, grooming facilities for dogs in dire need of a trim, and aromatherapy massages for general pooch relaxation. To top it off, the couple also create gourmet doggy snacks and ice-cream treats, and even have their very own doggy clothing range in the pipeline. Utterly dedicated to the cause, the flamboyant and bubbly twosome have proved ideal TV personalities, and admittedly love having a TV crew around to document their antics. It’s unsurprising that Leon previously worked as a children’s TV presenter, given his wacky, positive disposition. Between them, the couple have had many previous experiences unrelated to the four-legged variety; Matt worked as a flight attendant for British Airways, whilst Leon worked in a boutique hotel in Brighton - and together they were full-time foster carers. Amalgamating their skills and experience, the pair later came up with the concept of HOH, and dedicated their time to training in their respective areas of doggy care. They now have a ten-man strong team, and a matriarchal mentor in the form of successful millionaire and friend Gina Citroni, who advises (and frequently scolds) them on their business acumen. ‘The Dog Hotel’ delivers some truly heart-warming moments throughout the series; particularly so when Matt and Leon genuinely transform the lives of the pooches in their care. “My biggest reward is getting a dog to walk again that [was] advised, by a vet, to be put down. I’m blubbing up just thinking about it…” says Leon. Matt, on the other hand, explains that one of his most rewarding experiences was taming “Little Midge, the white Terrier” with the help of her owner in episode six, using counter-conditioning techniques. Fundamentally, it’s not about canine gimmicks and glamorous amenities for these furry-friend-enthusiasts. It’s about the enduring love between man and dog. “It’s like I own like 2000 dogs,” Leon laughs. “Cause they’re all so happy to see you, you know? And it’s just so lovely. That’s probably the most rewarding part, just seeing their little faces!” The Dog Hotel is broadcast by Watch TV, on Tuesdays at 8pm www.houseofhugo.com

WWE Live Spandex ballet!

Broadcast in over 150 countries to more than 650 million homes worldwide, the WWE Universe is exactly that- a universe. For decades, WWE has been an enduring powerhouse in sports entertainment, with stars such as John Cena, The Undertaker and Hulk Hogan winning the hearts of adults and children alike across the globe. And now, that ever expanding universe is (finally!) extending its reach to some untapped territory our very own Brighton Centre. BN1 were lucky enough to chat with the Ghanaian high-flyer himself, Kofi Kingston, ahead of their 17-day UK tour this month. Amidst performing more than 320 live shows in a year, WWE Superstars will be hitting the Brighton Centre on Tue 11 Nov, for a long overdue show fans are dying to see. “This is actually going to be a new market for us. We’ve been going to the UK for years now, but never to Brighton in particular. So yeah, we’re all really looking forward to being there and spreading our wings, and I’m sure the people over there are looking forward to having us too.” It seems that the rowdy nature of UK audiences is a welcomed embrace to Superstars like Kofi. Throughout the standard WWE chants that emit from the crowds, distinctive football fan-esque melodies unique to the UK define the lively atmosphere. “Each city is different, and everyone’s just really happy to be there. It makes it very easy for us to perform there and like I said, I’m really looking forward to it.” The 33 year-old Superstar made his debut back in 2006, and has since enthralled fans with the mesmerising acts of agility and strength that won him ten championships. These titles include the Intercontinental Belt four times, as well as tag team titles with the likes of CM Punk and R-Truth. The most notable moments of Kofi’s bouts are as he defies gravity at the famed Royal Rumble, taking centre stage with spellbinding acrobatics to avoid touching the floor around the ring. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to be since I was a kid,” Kofi tells me. “I grew up watching guys like Shawn Michaels and Ricky Steamboat. I was just so enamoured by the whole spectacle and entertainment aspect of it. It’s basically like storytelling. You always have good guys and the bad guys, you know, it’s the battle of good and evil! You mix that up with an athletic contest and put it in the ring- I just couldn’t help being attracted to it.”

By Lauryn Embleton

It won’t surprise many of you to know that Kofi’s favourite current superstars include Big-E and Xavier Woods. Their tight bond and relationship, born from being on the road together for so long, is easily identified from watching them over the last few months. An alliance between the three has been strongly suggested, and Kofi excitedly hints that something is in the works, but he wouldn’t want to count his chickens before they’ve hatched. “Actually,” he reveals, “when we come to Brighton, I will be in a match with Xavier Woods, probably taking on the Wyatts, Eric Rowan and Luke Harper. It makes for a great dynamic when you’re in the ring and partnered with someone you like, you know what I mean?” Nonetheless, there’s far more to being a WWE Superstar than meets the eye. “When I decided I wanted to be a WWE Superstar as a kid, it was kind of for selfish reasons. I wanted to get in there and have great matches, but I never realised how big of a voice the WWE would have.” Kofi admits his favourite part will always be meeting the fans and encouraging young people to go out and follow their dreams, just as he did. But it’s a hard life being on the road for so many days out of the year. “Especially now, my son is about 17 months,” he continues. “We’re probably on the road for five days of the week, but luckily in this day and age we have FaceTime and Skype, so I can still see him pretty much every day. But being away from home and your family is definitely the hardest part of being a WWE Superstar.” And as for the long overdue appearance of the WWE Network to European audiences? “I know they’re trying to get it over there ASAP,” he laughs. “We just gotta sit tight and wait, and it’ll be over there sooner than later!”

The WWE will be visiting the Brighton Centre on Tue 11 Nov, tickets are available now at www.brightoncentre.co.uk or by calling 0844 847 1515

Getting physical and getting smart with Bluetooth!

Matchbox Mobile give us the inside tech spiel... There’s never been a better time to make something real using Bluetooth Smart. Whilst the last few years have seen mobile apps become routine, this year has really opened up new ways of engaging with the physical world.

At Matchbox, we are passionate about the potential of Bluetooth Smart, and we are working with the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, an international body that defines and promotes Bluetooth technology.

We recently braved the bicycle-thronged roads of Amsterdam to give a talk at Bluetooth World Europe. There we learned about the Internet of Things, the excellent projects people are working on, and how much of it boils down to Bluetooth. • BEACONS: You will have heard of Apple’s iBeacons; low-powered short-range radios that broadcast a unique ID your smartphone can pick up. All beacons, not just Apple’s, use Bluetooth Smart to let you know something interesting is nearby: a shop entrance, a pile of last season’s cashmere sweaters, a public convenience. The power of the beacon lies in how it hooks us into a much larger system of data gathering and targeted content (yes this means advertising, too) and lets us interact with retailers, the real world and each other.

• BEATS: Dr. Kate Stone has a superb TED talk about using special ink to print DJ decks onto paper and, with Bluetooth Smart, get mixing and scratching like a superstar DJ.

• BREMEN IN GERMANY: This is where the clever folks at TobyRich are working on a super-stable and tiny remote-controlled toy aeroplane. It’s forgiving, it’s fast, it’s agile – and you drive it with your phone.

• BRIGHTON: With maker fairs and hack-a-thons, a mass of talented techies and dynamic business dreamers, our city is a perfect place to pitch and prototype your crazy new idea. How about a contact lens that flashes red when your heart rate goes up? Or a ringtone you can smell? Already on Kickstarter.

www.matchboxmobile.com

Through technical talks, webinars and training materials like the Smart Starter Kit, we are spreading the word, and the know-how, to help turn ideas into physical reality. This is the perfect time to think small, and think crazy. The technology is cheap and easy to work with. Phones that play with Bluetooth Smart and beacons are already here. At Matchbox, we’re super excited about the possibilities, and the genuinely useful things our fellow citizens will produce. Get thinking, and get making, and if you’re in Brighton come and talk to us about your next fantastic idea! Matchbox Mobile design and develop custom software for new devices and technologies.

Burgers & Cocktails Welcome to the patty... Finding the right burger is like finding the right man. Some might say it’s mission impossible, some might think the right one just doesn’t exist and others will know that it’s all about trial, error, perseverance and getting yourself out there. Fortunately, there’s an ubiquity of burger places (and men) in Brighton, ranging from the fast to the fancy. The purpose-serving drunken quickie burger - easily forgotten. The deliciously dirty burger-van-burger. The hot-spicy-and a-little-bit dangerous chilli burger. The good honest no-animalswere-hurt-ever veggie burger. There’s a time and a place for them all. Brighton’s burger diversity means there is plenty of potential for good, bad and ugly patty-and-bun experiences. A good burger is a beautiful thing, and you never want it to end. A bad burger can ruin your week. The ugly; a huge sloppy mess on a plate that can only be consumed like a proactive cat finishing off a rabbit carcass. So with Brighton’s burger perfectionists opening up all over the city, is there room for one more? And more importantly, could it be the one? On a sunny Autumnal lunchtime, myself and my colleague went in search of burgers and everything that goes with them, so headed to Burgers and Cocktails on North Road. There was an instant attraction to the slick surroundings as we arrived. This was the kind of burger joint that wouldn’t look out of place in a Tarantino film. Bleached wooden interior, Hokusai-inspired waves on the wall, soulful tunes and damn comfy window seats; the perfect setting for our burger pursuit. Our server Emily was incredibly welcoming without being intrusive, and was so passionate about the food and surroundings. Being slightly strapped for time, we regrettably skipped the starters, which included Veggie Nachos (£6.95) and Fajita Spiced Chicken Wings (£5.10). Going straight in for the burgers, my colleague jumped on The American with Irish Reared Beef, bacon, mushrooms and American Cheese (£7.95).

15 North Rd Brighton, BN1 1YA

By Beki Turner all-new-to-me aubergine and goat’s cheese burger with roasted garlic aioli (£6.95). We opted to share the large crinkly fries (£3.95), Deep Fried Onion Rings (£2.50) and the Coleslaw (£2.75). Our food arrived all at once and in good time. My colleague stopped talking, which was an indication that his burger was a good one. He eventually reported juiciness without the greasiness, and I could see in his eyes that he was feeling pretty taken by its taste. The goat’s cheese burger looked great, and tasted awesome. As the flavours melted together - the softness of the aubergine embracing the punchiness of the goat’s cheese - I felt truly loved up. I tried to get a look in on the chips and onion rings, but my eager dining partner put up a good fight. We agreed that they were refreshing and grease-free with lashings of crispiness, complimented by the fresh, creamy coleslaw. Not being much of a daytime drinker, I left the cocktail bit down to my colleague. He went for his usual lunchtime tipple of Strawberry, Lime and Passion Fruit Daiquiri (£6.95) which was absolutely gorgeous and looked stunning. Emily recommended the non-boozy Strawberry Smash for me (£3.00), which was a fruity little number comprising of strawberry puree, lemon juice and mint. It was divine. Having caught the cocktail bug, my companion also demolished a Brighton Beach Iced Tea which was an off-the-menu boozy delight with the addition of popping candy. Yes, popping candy. The dessert menu was tempting, but we declined Key Lime Pie (£4.95), a glorious list of ice-cream sundaes including Banoffee Popcorn (£5.50) and Retro Black Forest (£5.75) due to our overindulgence and inability to walk properly. We did, however, promise to return and try their all-new weekend brunch menu, which includes Banana Waffles and the Breakfast Burger. Burgers and Cocktails offer a generous 20% discount for students all day Monday to Friday and after 6pm on a Sunday, catering for omnivores, vegetarians and vegans.

Blue Mango

1 Boardwalk Waterfront Brighton Marina BN2 5WA

It’s spicy by the seaside.. The last time I went to the Marina I’m embarrassed to say that I was that girl obsessed with army combat trousers, football and trainers (don’t worry, I grew out of it). I don’t really journey to this side of town to watch the latest 12-rated film or (try to) smash my friends and family at bowling anymore. Instead of swapping my shoes, I came out to try one of the newly opened restaurants, Blue Mango. It’s an Indian oasis tucked away in a rainy, grey-skied corner of Brighton (this evening at least), which welcomes us in out of the cold. The décor is a majestic mixture of gold and red, warming us from the moment we walk in. Combined with friendly staff ready to greet us in traditional Indian dress - think rich fabrics and intricate detailing - we are happy with how our Monday evening has begun. It also has a large blue light brightening up the main restaurant as a nice contrast. We were shown to a booth with a low lamp hanging over the table that really added to the atmosphere. I’ve always enjoyed a good curry, although recently I’ve shied away from super hot foods as I’ve completely lost my knack for coping with spice. I was glad to be distracted when we were recommended a Georgian wine with floral notes: Marani Alazani Valley, which perfectly whet our palates. As we waited, we were given complementary papadums with four dips to choose from. Though our starters took a little longer than expected, we were certainly not disappointed when they finally hit our table. My favourite has to be the tandoori seabass that literally melted in my mouth pretty much instantly and whose perfect searing was complimented by its flavour. We also had Akbari Lamb Chops, which looked and tasted great though but could have had some more meat on the bone. We

By Freya Hughes were served Lasooni Khumb too – the most tenderly cooked stuffed mushrooms I think I’ve ever eaten. The starters (ranging from £4.75-£8.95) were accompanied by beautifully sculpted garnishes such as onions, cucumbers and radishes shaped into flowers and petals that, despite being par for the course in Indian restaurants, were a really nice touch. On the next bottle, we were recommended a drier Marani, called Mtsvane, which went nicely with the main. After a welcome gap between courses, our mains were served. As a seafood lover, I opted for the King Prawn Karahi (£11.95). The succulent prawns were perfect with slightly crunchy onions and peppers cooked in with the sauce. The spices (ground to order for freshness) took nothing away from the taste of the prawns, which were divine. My dining partners had the very tender Punjabi Deg Sey Lamb (£10.95) and the flavoursome vegetarian option, Dal Makhari (£6.95). By this point we were rather full (to put it gently!) so we opted for bread instead of rice to accompany our mains. The naans are made from scratch – the best, we thought, being flakey and full of coriander. Executive head chef Rakesh Kumar came to our table to make sure we were happy. Cooking since the early 1980s in Delhi, he explains that his grandfather inspired his line of work. He keeps his standards high and will work outside of the menu for customer satisfaction. Fit to burst, dessert arrived. We had warm cinnamon sponge with homemade vanilla ice cream served in a martini glass gorgeous. Eventually we waddled out in the cold, wondering if eating out would ever be the same again. www.bluemangobrighton.com

La Cave à Fromage C’est La Brie La Cave á Fromage does exactly what it says on the tin; a room filled to the brim with wonderfully pungent, top class cheese as well as a selection of those things that go best with cheese: wine, cured meats and bread. This is no place to come for something to grate over your spag bol; this is a place for people who really love and appreciate good cheese; this is for the connoisseurs, or at least the aspiring. We were in for an education with an interesting twist. The element of competition, successfully rids this cheese tasting night of any stuffiness, and automatically generates conversation around the table. The plain and simple task tonight: to learn about cheese, to eat cheese, drink wine, and pick a winner. Seated at the back of the ‘cave’, each guest is presented with a black slate. On it: four English cheeses go head to head with four French cheeses. Each table is also given a mouthwateringly good selection of cured meats and some little slices of poppy seed bread. First up is the Cremet and La Colline aux Chévres. A dry white is poured into each glass to complement the lemony notes in the goat’s cheese, and instructions to eat the cheese alone are given. Our hosts are passionate and knowledgeable, detailing how to taste the cheese effectively and how to take in the wine. For me, one little bite and there’s a clear favourite. The Cremet is creamy, full of flavour and melts in the mouth. After I eat half my slice, I can’t resist secretly smearing the rest onto a bit of bread. The French contender seems a little mild in comparison. Next it was France’s chance to shine. This time we are told

34-35 Western Rd Hove, BN3 1AF

By Sarah Gathercole to expect mushroomy tones from the two Camembertstyle cheeses and their fluffy white rinds and are served a medium bodied red to accompany them. We learn the French Rothschild is one of the last few remaining cheeses made using only the milk from the cheese makers’ own herds, therefore is left unpasteurised. This cheese is super-rich and creamy, as promised, and wins this round almost unanimously. Onto the ‘cheddar course’. We are introduced to some harder cheese; a Montgomery Cheddar, which crumbles in the mouth, and a smoother French Cantal Vieux AOC, served with a glass of a much lighter, fruitier red. Although this decision is a little harder to make, the Montgomery gets my vote! Our final indulgence is the blue cheese; our hosts may well have saved the best for last. We all listen intently while the perfect technique for bringing out the full flavour of the cheese is revealed to us. Taking some cheese in our mouths, we are advised to drink our dessert wine through the cheese, to discover a taste sensation. With the final vote in place, the room unveil their winners… a draw is announced! This seems a fair result; no cheese here could really be labelled a loser. On the way out we can’t resist treating ourselves to a rather tasty block. Maybe the wine has gone to our heads, or maybe we now fancy ourselves as connoisseurs? Whatever it might be, the evening had been a great success and I suspect later some curious dreams would have be had by all!

Señor Buddha An experiment in taste through Spanish and Thai influences Pop-up restaurants are becoming increasingly popular, attracting food lovers who are in search of something new and exciting. Most importantly, they provide an effective way for aspiring chefs to gain important exposure. The opportunity to create dishes for paying guests provides a platform to showcase their skills and to trial their menus, with a view to hone in on what works and what doesn’t. This evening, Lala’s Café, located on George Street in Hove, is the setting for Señor Buddha’s pop-up restaurant. The café itself is a lovely, breezy and colourful place; the ideal host for Mediterranean Tapas, with an Asian twist. All diners have been asked to select five dishes from the menu in advance. Wine is also pre-ordered and in our case is waiting for us on the table when we take our seats. Our smiley, attentive, waitress informs us it is the ‘house red’ and we find it very drinkable indeed. In order to get a rounded view of Señor Buddha’s, we have selected our menu with variety in mind. There is only a little wait before the first dish arrives and as we are booked onto the 9pm sitting, we are certainly ready for it when it does. Dishes arrive at tables one at a time, which does mean they cannot be enjoyed together. Nonetheless, as soon as one dish is polished off, another appears! First up, ‘Scallops and Chorizo’, which is devoured quickly. Served on a slate, the scallops and the pieces of chorizo are quite small, but do complement each other. The coconut & cauliflower puree is an interesting accompaniment, although the coconut gets a little lost. Next, ‘Bloody Mary Tomato Cubes’, (Señor Buddha’s personal favourite) come presented in a glass, alluding to the cocktail that inspires this dish. The vodka is very subtle, but overall, this is a refreshing combination. Before the next dish, we are offered a complimentary aniseed aperitif by ‘Señor Buddha’, who is making his way around the restaurant, greeting all of his guests. He stops for a little chat and we learn of his dream to eventually open a restaurant in Ibiza.

Then comes the ‘Volcano Chicken’, served on the bone. This is a healthy sized portion and the sweet honey and whiskey marinade makes for some juicy bits of chicken. We find the yellow curry sauce is a little too strong for the potato tortilla dish, although the tortilla itself is made well and unfortunately, the prawns in the spicy whiskey sauce, are slightly overdone. However, the dishes that follow these are very pleasant. The ‘Green Mango Salad’ - a sweeter take on the Thai classic, papaya salad - is light and nicely dressed. The ‘Octopus Tentacles’ are tender and the accompanying, vivid green sauce, reminds me of a coriander spiked aioli. These dishes, we really enjoy. The ‘Mountain Mutton Stew’ - which has been slow-cooked in a ‘secret dry spiced rub and soy sauce’ - falls off the bone and works well with the cardamom-infused coconut milk sauce. Now we are starting to feel quite full and mentally cross off what we have eaten, to work out what is left. We only have to make room for the ‘Lemongrass Halloumi’ and the ‘Lime and Chilli Cured Mackerel’, our final two dishes. The mackerel is tasty, but the rhubarb underneath is a bit tart to really complement its delicate flavour. The halloumi, which comes served on Asian puy lentils with a lemon and ginger foam, is decorated with rose petals. I can’t quite decide on the lemon foam, but who doesn’t love a piece of grilled halloumi?! ‘Señor Buddha’ attributes his fusion menu to his love of the hugely popular Spanish and Thai cuisines and his dishes this evening undoubtedly nod to this. He describes himself, quite simply, as having a good palate, adding he has not been professionally trained or even grown up in a family of foodies. Who knows if his palate alone is enough for success, but the ethos behind his vision is certainly an easy one to get on board with: ‘Great food should be enjoyed by everyone, it shouldn’t be elitist; it should be a way of life’. Well I can’t argue with that! Señor Buddha ‘An Experiment in Taste’ – Pop-up Restaurant at Lala’s Café Hove (5 dishes for £20) www.senorbuddha.co.uk

Be Gluten Free By Mila Statham

Polenta & Honey Biscuits Recipe: 80g margarine 140g rice flour 140g golden caster sugar 65g polenta, plus extra for sprinkling 1 tbsp honey 1 egg Preheat the oven to 170c. Line a baking tray with baking paper and sprinkle with the extra polenta. Mix the margarine and the sugar together until creamy and smooth. Add the flour and polenta then mix together. Finally add all the remaining ingredients and mix again until completely combined. With polenta dusted hands, roll up a walnut-sized piece of the wet dough into a ball. If it feels too sticky, grab some of the extra polenta and sprinkle over the ball. Press down onto the baking tray to form a biscuit . Repeat until all the dough is used up (leaving quite large spaces between each biscuit). Bake in the preheated oven for 15 - 20 minutes until golden.

Food For Friends Established in 1981 and winner of Foodie Awards ‘Best Restaurant 2012’, Food For Friends is a lovely little vegetarian restaurant in the heart of The Lanes. It is perfect for lunch, dinner, Sunday lunch or a spot of afternoon tea. They even sell cakes made to order.

An extra bonus is that they sell gluten free beer. The afternoon tea has gluten free options and is served between 12pm and 5pm every Monday to Friday.

A lot of the food they sell is also gluten free and vegan. Everything on the menu is clearly labelled if it is gluten free (gf) or if they have a gluten free option (go) for that dish. They also have labels for vegan (v), vo: vegan option (vo) and contains nuts (n). The staff are clearly informed on food allergies and will make sure you were looked after, while the restaurant itself is bright, clean and airy. The food is fantastic and varied, with generous portions and fresh tasting ingredients. All the food served is vibrant and bursting with so many interesting flavours.
