JUNE 2014 May is just a strange retreating memory now, but the festival fatigue lingers on. Perhaps, if I try hard, I can maintain these feelings of displacement and lethargy until the World Cup opening ceremony. Then I can live vicariously through 90min bursts of improvisation from 23 overpaid hair models. Somehow I can’t imagine any of it being as rewarding as a musical based in wartime Britain, or a Margaret Thatcher drag impersonator. The 2014 FIFA World Cup is undoubtedly the greatest show on Earth, but what theatre performance leaves you drunk and dejected? As Shakespeare said: “All the World’s a stage, but if you can’t break down that Uruguayan midfield, we might as well go home now.”

Like Nigel Farage triumphantly holding aloft a pint of beer, we triumphantly bring you BN1’s June issue. The only difference being we’re all about diversity and inclusivity. It’s summer, and there’s more than a few people preparing to tie the knot out there, so we’re declaring this our Wedding Edition. We’ve opted for a Wedding theme in this month’s photo shoot, and included a Wedding directory of suppliers who’ll add sparkle to your special day. There’s also a competition to win some cute cake toppers, to make the centrepiece of your reception truly personal. That’s not the only competition we’re offering though. We’ve got chances for you to win tickets to the South’s best two dance festivals! Do you fancy a trip to see Carl Cox at High Definition? Or do you and your mate or partner want the VIP treatment at Shakedown this year? If the answer is “YES” to either of these questions, simply flick through. But don’t forget to catch our round-up of all the summer’s local festival action. You want some interviews? Well we’ve got some Interviews! We catch up with our cover star Rob Broderick; front man of Abandoman about their upcoming return to Brighton, and Pete Wiggs from Saint Etienne just as they release their retrospective photo-book. The National’s Matt Berninger, and his brother Tom, also talk to us about the critically acclaimed documentary on the band, which is hitting cinemas this month. If it’s summer it must mean Paddle Round The Pier is drawing near. We take a look at this massive beach festival, as it gets ready for its biggest ever year. Rumour has it there’s a football tournament or something about to launch? We take a look at the best places to watch the World Cup 2014, in case you want the big match feel, or have simply been kicked out the house for making too much noise at 2am.

As always we’ve been sampling the best gastronomic delights the city has to offer. We get skewered at the Shuffle Bar’s barbeque, and get a pleasant surprise at The Grand’s upmarket seafood restaurant GB1 Squeeze in our regular Music, Comedy, Theatre and Film previews and that’s just about it. All the finest moments of joy that can be gleaned from Brighton and Hove, in one attractive handy-sized volume. Splendid.

Just in case all that football madness is going to be less than resource efficient, we redress the balance by previewing the imminent return to the Brighton Centre of The Eco Technology Show 2014, and look back at the success of Brighton’s hiSbe independent supermarket.

Author and CEO of Compassion in World Farming, Philip Lymbery, will be discussing his groundbreaking book, Farmageddon – The True Cost of Cheap Meat, with Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion at the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre on Thu 5 June at 7.30pm.

A unique early morning, pre-work rave phenomenon comes to Brighton. Entitled Morning Gloryville ‘Rave Your Way Into The Day!’ it’s the trailblazer in conscious clubbing and socialising. Philip Lymbery and Isabel Oakeshott’s eye-opening account highlights the worldwide crisis in mega-farming. It is both a wake-up call to change our current food production and eating practices, and an attempt to find a way to a better farming future.

On Thu 19 June, at 6:30am - 10:30am, Brighton’s Shooshh will be see locals rejig their usual morning routines and go clubbing, before heading on to work.

The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session including Amy Anslow from hiSbe, the new ethical supermarket on London Road, Brighton. brightondome.org/event/5585/farmageddon

World Cup - Live Big Screens World Cup 12 June - 13 July

Most of England’s population are duty bound to obsess over 23 of our country’s finest athletes this month. Those bearers of our nation’s dreams will be running around a 90m x 40m patch of grass, participating in a 48 year old exercise in futility. But let’s not be negative about our chances. At the FIFA World Cup 2014, we’ve got a fit young squad, with just enough experience present to keep the players focussed. Of course you can watch the tournament from home, where you can get asked idiotic questions about the rules by a disinterested partner. Listen… Football is about a shared experience. The unifying joy of seeing Beckham knock in THAT free kick against Greece, the disgust at Ronaldo using Rooney’s irascibility against him in 2006, or the collective heartache of Gazza’s tears (ask your parents…). With this in mind, why not head out to one of the many places in Brighton holding World Cup screenings? There’ll be no better place to be than amongst you peers, when Daniel Sturridge scores the winner against the Italians. But what

if you don’t want to watch the World Cup in some intimidating, soulless gin palace? Well here are a few places you can catch the games, on a massive screen, in top quality company. Offering all the beautiful game action both indoors and out, will be Concorde2. There’ll be three screens in the bar, as well as a 7m wide screen in the outside patio area! Entrance is free, but you can buy advance tickets for £5, which gets you guaranteed entry, as well as a free burger or hotdog, and a pint or vodka splash! Probably the closest you’ll get to an actual match day atmosphere can be found at the King and Queen. This legendary venue has two large screens that almost stretch into the next postcode, and must be the only pub in the City where there’s a VIP box above the bar (with waitress service) Brighton Big Screen returns on the 12th with its usual calendar of big sporting events and film screenings. Immersing themselves fully in the soccer spirit, they’re hosting a table football event

for local businesses, in association with Brighton and Hove Albion FC, just before the spectacular opening ceremony. The football-dominated programme will also squeeze in Wimbledon, the British Grand Prix and a host of Hollywood films, including The Lego Movie, Dirty Dancing and Captain Phillips. If you’re not up for standing (most pubs will be packed!) for two hours, Komedia can guarantee you a seat, even taking bookings for six or more people. As well as showing the game on a large screen, their kitchen will be open at all screenings to quell any nervous appetites. There’s also plenty of good food and drink offers each night, as well as promises of a great friendly atmosphere. The squad might be young, the pint glasses will be plastic and some of the matches are playing at stupid o’clock, but with each game a single hope develops that our squad can overcome the distraction of the WAG’s high profile shopping trips, gel as a balanced unit and live up to their potential. Then perhaps, the most desired 18 carat chunk of gold in football will return to these shores.

Seed To Seed by Lorenza Ippolito Onca Gallery, Brighton 2-15 June. Private View 5 June – 6-9:00pm. Drinks Provided

Two special events in June celebrate the past, present and future of Brighton’s Indian community. On Sun 8 June, the City’s Chattri hosts a memorial service for the 12,000 Indian soldiers injured in WWi, and hospitalised at sites around Brighton. Local artist Lorenza Ippolito’s show Seed to Seed can be seen at Brighton’s ONCA gallery Mon 2 – Sun 15 June. An exhibition of video and still photography, it explores how Brighton’s Indian community came to be and how displaced communities find a sense of belonging.

BN1 CHATS WITH...

hiSbe

Ruth & Amy A nslo

w

hiSbe | 20-21 York Place | Brighton | BN1 4GU After just six months trading, ethical supermarket hiSbe (How It Should Be) is going from strength to strength. Already championed by ethical retailing legend and Body Shop founder Gordon Roddick, the London Road business was named one of the Top five retailers in the Observer’s Ethical Awards. To find out more, BN1’s Gary Marlowe sat down with founders Ruth and Amy Anslow. You opened hiSbe in December 2013, six months in, what are you most happy about? We’re happy that we’re here! It was a long, long time in the planning, far longer than we anticipated. We were overly optimistic. We thought it would be a year, but it took almost three! You chose one of the most complex businesses to get into, why? When we first started batting ideas around it was about creating a business that stood for doing good. We knew how food retail works. We knew how it’s driven by short-term profit and then when you factor in things like obesity issues, animal welfare issues, all of which are side effects of the way the food industry is and we thought we wanted to do something about it. You could say we started hiSbe because we were pissed off with Tesco! Presumably, before you opened, you did a lot of research. Was there a role model you were looking to emulate? We’ve been inspired by lots of different independent businesses, although there wasn’t any particular food retail model that we were trying to emulate. It was more about taking bits from some and creating something new. All the big supermarkets are actually quite old-fashioned, they’re based on a pile it high, sell it cheap mentality, where it’s all about cheap labour and cheap food production. But they’re not addressing the big issues we’re facing today around sustainability and eco trading.

One of your investors is Gordon Roddick, one of the pioneers of ethical retailing. How did he get involved and how else has he helped the business? Whilst he isn’t our biggest investor, Gordon is certainly our most important one. We had been wanting to get a meeting with him for a long time, but nowadays he only invests in things he’s interested in. In August last year he invited us to meet him. We then spent months jumping through hoops to satisfy him on our business model and our projections. We were a couple of weeks away from opening with a shortfall of £20,000 and it was at that point that he said he was satisfied and invested in us. And it wasn’t a loan, he just wanted to help us make it happen. And what advice has he given you? Loads! He’s been a brilliant mentor. He always wants to see our monthly figures and he pops in every other week for a coffee and a chat. Gordon’s involvement was a massive validation for our business model and the boost we needed to get the store open and get the publicity his involvement inevitably brings. You chose a site that many would have said was a brave location, but it seems you’re not the only ones helping to change peoples’ perceptions of London Road. Had you always believed in the area? Yes, it did split opinion, but we were absolutely certain this is where we wanted to be. Although we’re not originally from Brighton, we’ve lived here since 2010 and we’d done the research. While the naysayers were saying London Road is run-down, we knew what was coming. And things have changed pretty quickly. I think us, and the other new businesses that are springing up round here have created a different kind of vibe now.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 11 ]

You’re very active on Twitter. You use it both to promote the business and specifically to attract people to visit the store. Was embracing social media always part of the plan? Absolutely. The store would never have happened without Twitter! If Twitter didn’t exist, hiSbe wouldn’t exist. To take an idea from nothing, to having to raise £200,000, we had to earn peoples’ trust, we had to become a credible voice within ethical food, and become a credible presence within Brighton. We used Twitter to establish that voice and the hiSbe brand and then to raise the money. Now we use it to talk to our customers. How do you define local? Is is a producer in Sussex or is it based on distance from the shop? It’s both. For us, it’s either a 30-mile radius or within the county and we’re lucky because Brighton is in the middle of two counties. Our meats all come from within 21 miles of here, so we’re extremely local. So, is there anything you’ve stocked that just doesn’t shift? I don’t think there is. We can’t afford the space to hold products that don’t sell. There are some we discontinued because they didn’t shift as fast as others, but everything we’ve ever stocked has always sold. On the flip side, one area we hadn’t expected to go so well, but absolutely flew off the shelves, was game. We had no idea people would be so interested in it. Our customers loved the fact they could afford to try wild boar or buy locally sourced venison burgers. Your philosophy is placing happiness before profits. In this day and age, is that really a sustainable business model? Absolutely. We believe it is. We believe that you need to start considering the people in the supply chain, the animal welfare, the farmers that are working every day to produce our food, the harmony of the planet and what intensive farming is doing to it. Every business is really about people and you need to have people involved in the business who share an interest in doing things right and making the situation the best it can be. But you still need to make a profit to sustain it... We think the sustainability angle of our business, our values and our sourcing policies are the right way to go. For example, is it right that three dairy farmers go out of business every day in this country because they’re forced to sell their milk below cost? That simply isn’t the way it should be. Wherever you are in the chain, you should be able to sell your product for what it’s worth. You call this your pilot store, when we will see you opening elsewhere? This has always been about testing the concept, making sure our figures added up and our projections were sound. We also needed to get the range right. Once we had got it how it should be, the intention has always been to open more stores and now we’re planning our second store, which will be in Hove. The challenge surely will come once you move beyond Brighton and Hove. There’s only two of you. How will that work? By the time we start really growing, we’ll probably have some kind of franchising model in place. Of course, it’s an added layer of complexity as we’re a social enterprise, but I’m sure it’s something Gordon can help us with! By Gary Marlowe Photos © by Images Out Of The Ordinary

Regarded as one of the UK’s best singer/ songwriters, Boo Hewerdine has steadily made his mark on the music scene. For over twenty years Hewerdine has released critically lauded albums, but songwriting is where he truly excels. Scores of famous admirers have recorded versions of his songs, including kd Lang, Heidi Talbot, David McCalmot, Natalie Imbruglia, Mel C and The Corrs. Now he comes to Brighton, just as new single, “Amazing Robot” gets released on Mon 23 June. It serves as a taster for Hewerdine’s forthcoming album “My Name In The Bracket’s”, which arrives in October.

The Baltimore based electronic trio head to Concorde 2, bringing their heart-rending 80s-styled perfect pop to Brighton for a sixth time.

OK, they look like they’ve been up Queens Road, handing out flowers and hippy literature. But rather than being a strange cult, they’re an exhilarating psychedelic pop/ rock act. It’s safe to say any The Polyphonic Spree show will be the most uplifting experience modern music can provide. Occupying the same meta-physical and harmonious existence as bands like The Flaming Lips or The Beach Boys, the group smashed into our consciousness with 2004 single “Light and Day”. This track, which popped up in various film and ad campaign soundtracks, enabled the collective to invest in a variety of matching outfits. I’ll buy a beer for anyone that can, without looking it up, name all of the band’s members!

Springing from the ashes of the overtly conceptual Art Lord & The Self-Portraits, this oddball outfit are now signed to 4AD, They still adhere to the same DIY spirit as in their early days, giving them an assured air of ingenious, and sometimes subversive, unpredictably. New album ‘Singles’’ is the band’s best yet, and now they’re spending a few months taking it around Europe.

Anyone under the age of 40 could be forgiven for believing this is the non-stop good-time live revue of the popular Channel 4 show. Well you’d be wrong. Existing on the wrong side of the tracks since 1977, the Misfits set out to make an impression, and created the blueprint for American punk. Providing a key influence on some of the greatest bands in rock, including Metallica, Guns ‘n’ Roses and My Chemical Romance, this horror film inspired act blended elements of punk, rockabilly, psychobilly, metal, and classic rock. Although the reach of their merchandising is greater than their music, and the only original member remaining is Jerry Danzig, they still remain a compelling live proposition.

Imagine Bob Seger and Bob Mould on a road-trip, under endless skies. On the way they pick up a hitch-hiking Neil Young, who educates the pair in the way of righteousness. That’s roughly what War on Drugs sound like. This Philadelphia indie rock band is doing some heavyweight touring in support of third album “Lost In The Dream”. And If you’ve heard that album, you’ll understand their currently blooming popularity. Musically they might be turning a little anthemic, but we’re a long way from big haired, excessive stadium rock. If there’s any justice in the world, then 2014 will a triumphant year for this band, and their trippy, lush Americana. www.concorde2.co.uk

Dome Concert Hall Facing a choice between getting wasted or music, Grant chose music. Good for him, and very lucky for us. Since then he’s gathered awards, collaborated with Sinead O’Connor, Rumer and Hercules & Love Affair and had his music featured on award-winning film Weekend. Now The Czars’ ex frontman is even further on the rise with his new album Pale Green Ghosts. He’s swapped his previous slightly awkward 70s influences for some blistering synth-pop, as a result he’s grabbed everyone’s attention. From the album’s odd cover, to lyrical content examining depression and homosexuality, this is a release that doesn’t want, or need, to conform.

Do you know where your mother is? Grammy Award winner Rod Stewart is blazing into town this month. Possessing a back catalogue of serious significance and diversity, “Rod the Mod” will smash out some of his greatest hits at our City’s stadium. There’s no disputing the quality of songs like “Sailing”, “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” and new ballad “Brighton Beach”.

If you saw them at The Great Escape… then well done. If you didn’t, then Worthing is only a short train ride away. It’s worth the effort, because the live show is where these lads shine. A year on since their debut album, and their second is almost here.

Here’s another The Great Escape artist returning to the City. If you were careless enough to miss him then, Ezra is embarking on a major UK tour this month. Not indulging in a series of horrendous collaborations has done little to slow this bluesy singer songwriter’s career.

The indie rockers are also powering around the country with a string of gigs and festival dates, including transferring to the Main Stage at Reading and Leeds. The harmonies are tight, the lyrics heartfelt and the fans fanatical. Things are looking busy for Peace.

The Haunt

If you’ve not managed to get tickets for Brian Jonestown Massacre this evening, do not panic. There’s all the mellifluous rock-pop action you’ll ever need over at Brighton Centre. OK, joking aside, there’s an incredible line-up of 70s talent in Once In A Lifetime. Featuring The Osmonds, David Essex, Showaddywaddy and Les Mckeown’s Legendary Bay City Rollers, the concert puts together the heavyweights of Britain’s bygone pop scene for one last time. There are few songs that summon the youthful spirit of The Osmonds’ “Crazy Horses” or embrace new found freedoms like Essex’s “Silver Dream Machine”. The faces may be creased, but the sentiment in their songs is something that will last forever.

Polica are back for an intimate Glastonbury warm-up show. The eagerly anticipated new album ‘Shulamith’ deploys the unique sonic palette that Polica developed on their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Give You The Ghost’.

Formed by Bam Margera, the delightfully named Fuckface Unstoppable are probably best known for their tender love ballad: Bend My Dick. Professional skateboarder Margera grabbed worldwide fame arseing about on TV’s Jackass. Here he teams up with his brother Jess, Alex Flamsteed from Guttermouth, Waldie from Viking Skull, Novak, Matty J, Murry, Hanna from Black Cowgirl, and the Brandywine Eel from Gnarkill to form a metal super-group. Gather your relatives and get them to dress for sweaty conditions, this is top rocking fun for the entire family.

Drawing on elements of R&B, electronica and dub, and blending them with effects-laden vocals, Polica are arguably one of the most innovative and exciting new bands in the UK.

IN CONVERSATION WITH...

SAINT ETIENNE Started with the intention of being a classic pop act, Saint Etienne began a very public love affair with British music way back in 1990. Since those days Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have produced a much-loved and eclectic catalogue of work. An enchanting jumble of 60s popular culture, folk, electronica and house music, their earnest audio collages sound as fresh and innovative today as they did almost 25 years ago. Now they celebrate that quarter century in show business, with the release of a new photo book this month. “Personally it’s brilliant, because I’m rubbish at keeping stuff. So it’s like a catalogue of my life,” founder member and Hove resident, Pete Wiggs muses. “We’ve been doing a lot of trawling through old memories recently, with all the reissues we did. There are still lots of foggy areas. Luckily our manager Martin has a slightly better memory.” Age old pop themes: the energy of youth, love’s overpowering optimism and enthusiasm pervade Saint Etienne’s music. On their superb 2012 album ‘Words And Music’ they went one step further, writing a set of songs that dealt first hand with the emotions and sense of belonging that pop music creates. The release saw collaborations with Richard X and ex-Xenomania stalwarts Nick Coler and Tim Powell, showing the band keep a keen eye on the present, despite referencing the past. The album conveys the excitement felt before heading out to a gig, examines the entwining of music and growing older, and provides a compelling homage to the power of the Disc Jockey. Such eccentricities have become second nature for a band that’s unashamed to place unwieldy titles on records, or make an electro-folk album on a whim.

A few Saint Etienne songs sound almost dejected over pop’s long lost purity. In a world sadly preoccupied with twerking, wealth and unreasonable expectations, modern chart music seems less innocent and interesting. “There’s got to be a bit of mystery, a bit of melancholy and a bit of madness. It also helps if they look good too,” Wiggs is certain on what distinguishes the perfect pop act. “My favourite ones have some kind of nutcase in control. There’re possibly less people like that around these days. Growing up in the early 80s, it was the golden age of regional nutters fronting bands, imparting some kind of magic.“ Across eight studio releases, a Christmas album, films and film soundtracks and a spell being artists in residence at London’s Southbank Centre, the members of Saint Etienne have proved it’s more than a band, it’s a conduit for all of their creative outpourings and shared experiences. ‘How We Used To Live’, the band’s fourth film, was released last year. A dreamlike documentary about an ever-changing London, they’ve been performing its score at certain screenings recently. “It’s all colour footage from the post-war period, with narration from Ian McShane. It’s quite lyrical and poetic. It’s like a stream of consciousness.” Now the band is reflecting upon their career, with this photo book. This rich monograph is visually stunning, containing 150 familiar and previously unpublished photos of the group. Adding a personal touch are images from their personal archives, taken by close friend and film-maker Paul Kelly. The book also provides full annotation, a complete discography and plenty of commentary from Cracknell, Stanley and Wiggs. “You look at some of the pictures and it brings memories of

what you were feeling like on that day. There are loads of clothes, where I’m like: ‘Oh my god! What are you wearing?’ The hair… There are various lengths of hair,” Wiggs laughs. “But, we’ve been together so long I consider Bob and Sarah as family, so it is just like a family album.” For an army of indie kids now entering a fourth decade, Saint Etienne provided a soundtrack to their youth. Over the years the band has grown, both in confidence and ingenuity, but is there anything the band could have done differently? “At the inception, we’d thought we might last a year. I think there was a few times when we should have followed a hit with a similar song, but that’s part of it.” “I like the fact we occupy a grey area between commercialism and the opposite. We’ve always been allowed to just get on with it.” Pete Wiggs hosts The Séance, every Saturday at 6 - 7pm, on Radio Reverb 97.2FM The Saint Etienne photo-book is published by First Third Books on Tue 17 June, 2014 www.firstthirdbooks.com www.saintetienne.com By Stuart Rolt

If you have ever been to an Abandoman gig before, you will have heard front-man Rob Broderick refer to themselves as ‘Ireland’s seventh biggest Hip-Hop act’. Despite this comically self-deprecating statement, Abandoman have been wildly overwhelming audiences with their unique brand of Irish hip-hop improvisation since 2008. With a multitude of comedy awards under their belt, various TV, radio and festival appearances as well as a sellout UK tour supporting Ed Sheeran; these freestyling men of farcical rap are not to be missed. With a new tour having started last month, Brighton’s own Komedia will be one of the many venues called on along the way this June. I had a chat with Rob to find out about what Abandoman have in store.

“I always find it hard to describe what we do because when people hear the pitch, that we’re Irish freestyle rapper comedians, it doesn’t sound good!” Rob laughed as we talk about what people’s thoughts might be, having yet to experience the show; “An Irish rapper... he hasn’t written the lyrics yet but I’ve heard strong things!” “People have to come to the show to see what it is. I like to think our aim is to make a celebration of the people in the room, challenge people and make it epic and the nice thing is, people do really control the show. When they realise that, they start to play with us and it makes the show really go far.”

ABANDOMAN IMAGE © IDIL SUKAN - DRAW HQ

Having seen the guys twice before, once in a small town hall in Tiverton four years ago and at our very own Brighton Comedy Festival, shows previously consisted of energetically jumping from one song to the next. Rob and fellow Abandoman member James are trying something slightly different with their new show ‘Moonrock Boombox’.

“This is a one hour narrative story. We’re creating a whole world set on the moon where all the people in the audience have populated it. At different moments I have different things to do with that world so every chat we get attains to the full show so it becomes this surreal magical world.” When I rang Rob, it was during The Great Escape and they had been interviewing musicians at the Northern Lights pub the previous day as part of the festival. These were no ordinary interviews of course. It wasn’t long before it all turned musical as songs were inspired and Abandoman collaborations were happening. “Yesterday was our first day doing something like this and it was just really fun and really silly. It starts off with an interview and ends up with a song. Since they are musicians they end up singing along as well. I want to do more stuff like that.” Rob clearly has a lot of affection for Brighton, as this is where Abandoman pretty much kicked off, at Fringe, this time six years ago. “Whenever we come back to Brighton, it’s like ‘ah, this is our origin story’, our ‘Peter-Parkerbeing-bitten-by-a-spider’ moment.” They have come a long way since then but their ethos still seems to remain the same – “I just want the audience to be playful and be up for the craic. It’s a bit of a party and hope they’re just ready to have fun. We did one of our regular songs ‘What’s in your pocket?’ at V festival once. Someone held up their prosthetic leg and then from the other side of the tent, someone else unscrewed their prosthetic leg and they had a light saber war with their legs. The nicest moments in a show are when things come super left field.” Abandoman will be at the Komedia on Tues 10 June www.robbroderick.com www.facebook.com/ABANDOMAN @abandoman By Holly Cozens

BROTHERS IN ARMS... BN1 talks to Matt Berninger, the lead singer of indie rock band The National, and his brother Tom, director of the new documentary about the band, ‘Mistaken for Strangers’. “I’m not going to be a rock star, I’m something else” says Tom, as he talks about his new music documentary, Mistaken for Strangers (the title taken from a track on the band’s 2007 album, Boxer). What started as a traditional ‘rock doc’ became the best kind of therapy for Tom who despite being hired by Matt as a roadie for their upcoming tour, took his camera along for the ride. “The other band members were supporting parts in this world and were kind of my psychiatrists, my psychologists or my shoulders to cry on and I liked that.” In the documentary Tom is unemployed, though he’s made a few amateur action movies and likes heavy metal, not indie rock. He’s nine years younger than Matt, the suave and successful indie band singer. Tom is enthusiastic and sincere in his occasionally rambling responses while Matt, a veteran of the interview process is considered and composed, prompting his brother to speak on occasion, or completing answers when he hears Tom go off-track. Nine years younger than Matt, for Tom it took making

his poignant and heartfelt documentary, Mistaken for Strangers to step out of his brother’s shadow. Though he set out to make a documentary about the band, Tom and his relationship with his brother quickly becomes the subject of the film. In 2010 The National (as they have since continued) were going from strength to strength. After the almost unanimous critical acclaim of Boxer, the Ohio band released their similarly acclaimed and highly anticipated fourth album High Violet, accompanying this with a world tour. With Tom out of work at the time, Matt saw this as an opportunity to help his sibling out. “It started out with me trying to give Tom a job. He was sort of in between jobs. Partly that was the reason why I brought him along and partly… I just kind of missed him, because we hadn’t spent a lot of time together since I went off to college. So there were two reasons I wanted him around. I encouraged him to bring his camera, but I did not expect it to turn into what it did by any means.” “Neither did I,” agrees Tom. “It was kind of a nightmare for me and for everybody. At first I thought I’d try to make a real rock documentary and I was just not the right person to do it. It took my brother’s wife and my brother to convince me that the better story is me, but it was hard to watch myself on screen all the time. I had a lot of problems and I was putting them out there for everybody to see, but everybody knew that was the better story.”

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 21 ]

Quite literally a band of brothers, The National comprise of guitarist and song writing siblings Aaron and Bryce Dessner, with a rhythm section encompassing brothers Bryan and Scott Devendorf on drums and bass respectively. With lone wolf Matt completing the 5-piece, the theme of brotherhood isn’t one that had escaped him. “Travelling the world with those guys for the past 14 years and the fact they have their brother with them through this crazy thing that has happened to us...I saw how nice that was, that they always had somebody around to do stuff with, it was a healthy thing for them, I kind of envied that for a long time. Bringing Tom along was a chance to try that, and it’s true, it was good, it was great, even though Tom drove me crazy, and I drove Tom crazy. Having him around helped me keep connected to the world in a healthier way. Before that I would often go off and ‘get weird’ inside my head and having him around kept me going in some of those weird depressing places that you go to on the road, living in a bus for months. I was really happy that he was around.” So much more than a music documentary, and certainly not solely for The National fans, Mistaken for Strangers is a unique and universally truthful celebration of individuality, and an intimate portrait of brotherhood. When talking about how the film-making process affected their relationship Matt added: “I think I learned that Tom has to do it his own way, and the way I do things is not something that I should expect him to do. I learned to respect him as a different adult and not so much as my little brother that I’m supposed to be guiding and shaping anymore, he’s his own person and he’s going to go into the world in a different way and I think that’s made our relationship better... only Tom could have made this kind of a movie.” Mistaken for Strangers is released in UK cinemas on Fri 27 June 2014. mistakenforstrangersmovie.com By David Howland

WIN CAKE TOPPERS FOR YOUR WEDDING

BIRDSEED KEEPSAKES For your chance to win an exclusive cake topper worth £130 for your wedding, just answer this simple question: What is the name of Kate Bird’s business? Local, Hove-based artist Kate Bird had always aspired to find work that enabled her to channel her creativity, making the leap into the world of weddings and cake toppers with her unique cake topper business ‘Birdseed Keepsakes’. When she was living and working in Australia, Kate spent time with friends who ran a local art gallery. They recognised her talent and encouraged her to practice and work on building a career around her skills. Although her paintings and sketches were highly popular, by far the most popular aspect of her work was her intricately detailed sculpted cake-toppers. Brides (and grooms!) were excited to have such a unique touch on their wedding cakes and enjoyed the opportunity to add truly personal touches or items. Kate works from her studio at home in Hove, and welcomes enquiries from anyone wishing to discuss their own custom-made cake toppers. She also has an online store offering an animal range of cake topper bride & grooms (or ‘groom & groom’ or ‘bride & bride’), which have proven very popular.

OPENS FRIDAY 20 JUNE This June, something exciting will be happening within Brighton Station. The building that once housed the Transport Police is soon to home to The Cyclist Refreshment Room; a new modern eatery in prime location for weary travellers near and far. The Cyclist will provide all day dining, from fresh revitalising breakfasts, all the way through to wholesome suppers. With locally sourced food, beer and cider, this innovative new venture from Greenwell & Tipple is set to be a big hit.

The founders of Geronimo Inns, Rupert and Jo Clevely, are the heart and soul behind Greenwell & Tipple and have high hopes for their first site here in the city: “Brighton is a place I have always been mad about,” Rupert tells me. “What I like about Brighton is, it’s quirky and lends itself to innovation and excitement. It is a great place for new ideas, new opportunities and if you can be successful in Brighton, you can pretty much be successful in lots of other places too.” Planning has been happening for 15 months now due to a delay with the Transport Police finding new premises but they are now well on their way to opening their doors to the general public come the 20th June. As Rupert and Jo’s daughter Coco showed me round the site in progress and eagerly described their plans to me, I got the distinct feeling that this is definitely a family passion project. “It’s teamwork within the family, that we have all thrown ideas around. We have three daughters that have watched us over the years and have quite strong opinions so there have been some interesting moments.” Jo Clevely, Rupert’s wife informs me as she talks about the design of The Cyclist. “I want it to feel very un-new, very un-shiny but very clean and efficient. For me, it has to be comfy and inviting and certainly not boring or dull.” It is refreshing to know that, as newcomers to Brighton, the Clevely family has every intention of making The Cyclist a warm, honest and vibrant place to eat and relax. With quality also a top priority, their head chef Nick Cain brings his extensive fine dining background into the Refreshment Room and will be creating dishes of a deliciously visual and individual nature while staying grounded in The Cyclist’s spirit of affordable, fresh, fast food. Rupert recalls that the idea for the name comes from an old Australian tradition where refreshment rooms were created at train stations for somewhere for men and especially women could go to enjoy food and drink comfortably without having to frequent the more common rundown macho bars. “What we will be doing is recreating that ethos of a slightly more elegant place at the railway station. The name ‘The Cyclist’ came about because Brighton has great links to cycling, especially around the station. People in the city seem to have a great affinity with the activity so it lends itself perfectly to the name ‘The Cyclist’.” The Cyclist will be open in Brighton Station from Friday 20 June www.thecyclistbrighton.co.uk

Tue 10 - Sat 14 Jun

Theatre Royal One of Britain’s best loved TV programmes, All Creatures Great And Small, takes to the stage in a major new dramatisation. Based on the books of real life vet Alf Wight and his semi-autobiographical anecdotes, the play is set against the idyllic background of the North Yorkshire Dales. Veterinary physician James Herriot leaves his city ways behind him, and wins the heart of a colourful farming community. Coronation Street’s Oliver Mellor stars as the iconic vet James Herriot, and is accompanied by 2Point4 Children’s Clare Buckfield, as his wife Helen, and Susan Penhaligon as eccentric client Mrs Pumphrey. www.atgtickets.com

Inspired by the Noh Theatre tradition of Japanese storytelling, dance and masks, this production is set thirty years after the end of the iconic Puccini Opera. Madame Butterfly’s son, Tomisaburo, has journeyed to America in the hope of meeting his father for the first time. However, B. F. Pinkerton, now Governor of Georgia is seeking re-election, so he leaves Tomisaburo waiting in the entrance hall for three full days. Michael Finnissy’s new score responds to themes from Puccini. Although the focus is on the crisis between son and absent father, Butterfly is an inevitable presence in their struggle.

All-male Shakespeare company Propeller set out to provide more engaging ways of expressing Shakespeare. Exploring the relationship between text and performance, they mix a rigorous approach to the text, with a modern physical aesthetic.

TERRY GILLIAM AND THE ENO BENVENUTO CELLINI

14 May - 22 June Emporium Fifty years since Joe Orton’s domestic drama first outraged West End audiences, and it still shines as edgy as ever. Its themes of murder, blackmail and delicious deviance are just as shocking, titillating and darkly hilarious as they were then. Containing nudity, violence and scenes of a strong sexual nature, the piece tells of lusty landladies and leather-clad psychopaths. The attractive Sloane becomes the Kemp’s lodger. Both Kemp and her brother then fall for his charms, but is there a sinister secret yet to be revealed? Directed by James Weisz and designed by Gary Blair, anyone who is easily offended will find plenty to shock them here. www.emporiumbrighton.com

Tues 17 June

In Shakespeare’s smartest and most farcical play, they bring the two sets of estranged twins to the same city, 25 years after their separation. A series of mistaken identities, assumed personas, and wild mishaps bring hilarious consequences. In fact it’s a family crisis so complicated that time itself loses the plot. Fortunately the audience is always one step ahead of the characters. www.atgtickets.com

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM Wed 11 - Sat 14 Jun

Duke Of York’s Picture House

Theatre Royal

Benvenuto Cellini is being broadcast from the London Coliseum and presented, in breathtaking cinematic HD, at cinemas around the country. Unseen in London for many years, and never previously at the ENO, Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini is forged anew, with its stunning visual and musical set pieces. Berlioz’s first completed opera is based on the autobiography of 16th-century goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini. This tale of thwarted love, elopement, intrigue, disguise, mistaken identity, secular merrymaking and sacred ceremony, is set to some of Berlioz’s most vibrant, swashbuckling and tender music. www.picturehouses.co.uk

Playing to packed houses across the world, Propeller’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is fresh, funny and beautifully lyrical. Themes of love, passion, magic, mistaken identity and even theatre itself collide in Shakespeare’s most surreal play. Two pairs of lovers become entangled in fairy mischief on the eve of a Royal Wedding. Malevolent fairies, squabbling lovers and some fellow called Puck feature in one of The Bard’s best works. Dreams and reality become interchangeable within the romantic chaos that ensues and misplaced passions are ignited as appearances become ever more deceptive. www.atgtickets.com

PADDLE ROUND THE PIER 2014 Of course we don’t want to wish away June, but we’re already getting excited over July’s Paddle Round The Pier. The world’s biggest free beach and watersports festival, Paddle features the best in water, street and urban sports, live music, kid’s entertainment and plenty more. Returning once again on Sat 5 – Sun 6 July, to the beautiful surroundings of Hove Lawns, the event offers loads of free fun, stacks of great prizes, chances to try new sports, new bands to enjoy and mind blowing demonstrations to see. Paddle has always appealed to surfers and watersport enthusiasts, but there’s no shortage of land-lubbers wanting to get involved in the action. From all the usual suspects, like surfing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, skating, windsurfing and free running, to all new disciplines like Surf Life Saving, land paddling, kitesurfing and freestyle mountain biking‚ the event is a must for anyone who has, or wishes they did have, an active lifestyle All the old favourite spectacles return for this year, including the Pier to Pier races, gruelling swims and the world famous title event – Paddle Round The Pier. Arguably the centrepiece of the weekend is the “Paddle Something Unusual” event. This is the perfect opportunity for the community to exercise their creativity and fundraising skills. Previous years witnessed planes, sheds and even a replica of Tracey Island take to the sea, with mixed results. Well, generally there are only two results, sinking or floating. Entrants have to prove their creations can actually float, before being allowed to venture out to sea. So don’t think your picnic table, with water cooler bottles attached, will make the grade. The float testing process always proves popular with the crowds, as the floundering of craft produced by the foolhardy, or mechanically ignorant, invariably provides fine entertainment.

There’s plenty of land based activities for the hydrophobic out there. You can find how to turn any urban space into a surf spot with tarp surfing, or perhaps you fancy working up a sweat on Freedom Leisure’s Muscle Beach, or overcoming any obstacle in your path with the crazy parkour skills of Urban Athletics Crew. Showcasing Brighton’s surfing history, through art and photography, will be the Sharkbait team, who’ve been providing daily surf reports and forecasts for the last 14 years. Kids as ever, are well catered for at Paddle. 2014 sees the return of Crazee Hazee as compere for the Children’s Stage. Streetfunk and Marina Studios will also be keeping the youngsters moving with demos and workshops. A much loved core element of Paddle is the Music Stage. Started in 2006, when Jen Collins set about creating a stage featuring the best local music, it keeps the crowds entertained and raises lots of money. Once again the stage is graced by the cream of Brighton talent, including Kitten and the Hip, Duncan Disorderly & the Scallywags, Will And The People, Ez Stone, Soul of the City choir and Fat 45. Right next to the Music Stage is the sumptuous delights of Paddle’s World Food Court. This array of alfresco restaurants presents even more of the planet’s best cuisine this year. There should be something for everyone, no matter what their tastes are. There’s even a promise that every outlet will have a gluten-free dish! From its beginning as an oddball picnic for the surfers that had had been rounded up by founder Dave Samuel, to the sprawling celebration of all thing active that it is today, Paddle has gone from strength to strength. Last year the event attracted a record 55,000 visitors, and in recent years it has donated over £200,000 to charity. With the overwhelming support of the watersports industry, Brighton & Hove City Council and many local businesses, Paddle Round The Pier 2014 is set to be the biggest ever.

New To Cinema 22 Jump Street - 6 June If the 2012 release 21 Jump Street had you in fits of giggles, the sequel being launched this June is guaranteed to have the same result. This highly anticipated comedy sees the bro-mantic police partners going undercover yet again, only this time, after graduating high school for the second time, they’re hitting the fraternity packs at college. Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, the team plan to take down a crime ring within the fraternities, and realise along the way, that they have to learn the art of becoming real men.

Oculus - 13 June Looking for some white-knuckled fear this summer? Oculus is set to be the horror hit this year. A family is left shaken when ten years prior, Tim Russell shoots his father after witnessing him shoot his mother. Insisting that the killings took place due to a paranormal entity that lied within an antique mirror in their home, Tim is confined to an insane asylum. The film follows his sister Kaylie’s (played by Karen Gillan) pursuit to prove that the mirror is indeed supernatural and the cause of the families bloody past.

Chef - 20 June Indie film favourite, Jon Favreau, turns his hand yet again at directing, with this light hearted comedy that stars himself alongside an all-star cast that includes Dustin Hoffman and Scarlett Johansson. Favreau plays a chef whose failed attempt at opening a Los Angeles restaurant spurs him to return to his hometown of Miami, and start up a food truck that he hopes will reignite his love of food and release his inner creativity. The film was aired at SXSW festival and received a good reception as an amiable and pleasant comedy.

Cold in July - 27 June Storming this year’s Sundance Festival, Jim Mickle’s Cold in July is a critically-received American crime drama starring Michael C. Hall. Set deep in 1980’s Texas, this indie hit trails the aftermath that erupts when Richard Dane (Hall) shoots an unarmed burglar in the middle of the night. After initially being praised as a hero within his community, Dane and his family’s lives are turned upside down when he is visited by the father of the man he had shot, hell bent on reeking revenge. Hart portrays Dane’s struggle to protect his family with striking vulnerability, and the film itself is packed full of noir-style twists and turns.

FILM

A Filmmaker in East Sussex: An appreciation of Ben Wheatley BY WAYNE IMMS

Five years ago, the debut feature film from highly acclaimed Brighton-based director Ben Wheatley was released. Down Terrace gained a nomination for Best Screenplay at the Evening Standard British Film Awards and won at the British Independent Film Awards. The 2009 film is a gritty and occasionally brutally violent tale of a particularly dysfunctional family with a penchant for criminal activity, including murder. Down Terrace was filmed in just eight days around Brighton. Ben is, at least in my view, a particularly significant filmmaker. Since his first feature, he has continued to be very prolific. Between the releases of his first feature and his second, he directed Ideal, the acclaimed BBC Three comedy starring Johnny Vegas, and Steve Coogan: The Inside Story, a spoof documentary on the comedian and actor. Ben’s second feature, 2011’s Kill List, blew me away. I remember seeing it the day it came out at the Duke of York’s. Ben’s a patron of the great cinema. After the screening, I turned to my friend Kirstie and simply said, “What a film!”

of Don’t Look Now. The 1973 horror is one of his favourites and one of the most acclaimed British horrors of all time. The onstage interview was more like an intimate chat; a pair of filmmaking friends discussing each others’ work, mainly Roeg’s, as well as some pitfalls of the film industry. At the Duke’s, Ben was pleased that Sightseers was my favourite film of 2012, but not so keen to hear that I was yet to see A Field in England. This surreal and quite psychedelic film was the first to simultaneously have a release on Blu-ray, DVD and at cinemas, as well as late night on Film4.

Kill List is somewhat difficult to describe. However, it’s a very dark and a horrific tale about a pair of hit men. If you like that sort of thing, you really should watch it, if you haven’t already. It ends with a superb and grim twist, which I don’t recall having seen coming. Kill List was my favourite film of 2011. Along with all of his films so far, it was written by his wife, Amy Jump. Their professional partnership continued with Sightseers, which was released just a year after Kill List. Perhaps as equally dark as Ben’s previous releases, this is really a comedy, but a very dark one. It was actually my favourite film of 2012. I ended up seeing it three times. Each viewing seemed like a fresh and a highly enjoyable experience.

A Field in England certainly helped to cement Ben’s reputation as a leading filmmaker. It was even championed by the legendary Martin Scorsese; quoted on a poster for the film with, “a most original and stunning cinematic experience.” Endorsement-wise, it couldn’t get much better than that.

A couple of times, I met Ben in the flesh. The first time was when he appeared on a radio show that I used to present, The Geekend, on Brighton’s Radio Reverb. This was a few months ahead of Kill List being unleashed in cinemas. Rather bizarrely, we tried to get him to wear a cardboard Smurf mask for a photo with me and the show’s team but that didn’t really work out, understandably. Then last year, Ben interviewed one of his heroes, director Nicolas Roeg at the Duke of York’s, following a fortieth anniversary screening

Undoubtedly, the director’s work will soon gain a much bigger audience, due to his work on the first two episodes of the forthcoming Doctor Who series, starring Peter Capaldi. Of course, Ben was thrilled to have been asked to direct these, having been a fan of Tom Baker’s portrayal of the Time Lord. It will be interesting to see how much of an actual input he has on the series. Perhaps these episodes will continue the same dark thread, like much of his previous work. Currently, Ben is shooting a film adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s novel High Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Irons. We can expect it to be released in the UK in 2015. www.mrandmrswheatley.co.uk Image credit - Dean Rodgers

The Specky Wren London Road Open Market, 1-2 Marshalls Row, Brighton, BN1 4JU

Bridging the gap between premium priced boutiques and the ‘stack it high, sell it cheap’ mentality of the high street chains, The Specky Wren has a new vision for how opticians should be.

Optometrist Marco Wren and Store Manager David “Specky” Carmichael have almost 40 years’ experience in the industry. Not only do they strive to provide a perfect service for customers, but they hope to have a positive impact on the thriving local community.

This range features over 500 different frames, in a number of colour-ways and styles, from the inexpensive to the flashiest of designer bands. After a while it became apparent the pair had a similar idea of how the things should be run. So a natural next step was to set up a practice together. Marco Wren is adamant about the simple reason for starting their own business: “We wanted to create a shop where we, and our families, would feel at home in a friendly and affordable shopping environment”. GB1 It’s impossible not to feel like an A-List celebrity, upon strolling into the lobby of Brighton’s most iconic hotel. But before I get ahead of myself, there’s a little context to add. As a confirmed pescetarian I get consigned to the side-lines concerning restaurant reviews. There’s nothing thrilling about covering the latest happening burger joint and only mentioning the salads. For me, all life is sacred. It betrays the special bond we share with all living creatures to sample their tender flesh. Except for marine life… Most life beneath the waves is too tasty, stupid and ugly to be allowed to live. So when BN1 was offered the opportunity to visit a high-end establishment specialising in seafood, I got to prove my worth as an impact player. To add to my delight, I was off of the bench to sample the sumptuous delights of The Grand’s GB1, one of Brighton’s most glamorous culinary experiences. Opened in February 2013, this stylish seafood restaurant offers the finest and freshest locally landed fish, in a unique dining experience. Royalty, presidents and even an emperor have enjoyed The Grand’s luxury hospitality. At this point we return to my

The Grand 97-99 King’s Rd, Brighton, BN1 2FW glamorous entrance, the Sun’s appearance facilitating the wearing of sunglasses, as I stroll into the Hotel’s elegant lobby. Far from having a rarefied atmosphere, occupied by pompous waiting staff, GB1 offers a welcoming and relaxing experience. The centre of the room is dominated by an ocean liner-sized bar. This enables more casual diners to sit and sample cocktails and oysters, which are prepared at the bar with theatrical relish. Away from the bar area’s drama, there’s banquette seating, allowing you to soak up the atmosphere in style. For me the irresistible draw was the covered terrace, which offered both stunning sea views and an unpanelled, secluded (and surprisingly quiet) view over the lively Kings Road. My fellow diners were couples enjoying a romantic lunch, a family finding a menu fulfilling every taste and people there to watch the world wander past. A rich and varied a la carte menu, affordable set menus and a range of specials that changed daily were on offer. Salmon cured with treacle, orange and sea salt (£6.50), was too a starter I couldn’t ignore. Balanced with a potato and pear salad, it was succulent and tasty, making the perfect light beginning to my meal.

My companion had little trouble choosing the Brighton Cod, lightly breaded with panko crumbs (£6.75). Ostensibly the City’s glitziest fish finger sandwich, it was served with lettuce and lashings of tartare sauce, adroitly blanketed in a soft bap. The balance of capers in the tartare sauce was perfect instead of overpowering, whilst the cod had an excellent flavour and texture, with rich crunchy breadcrumbs. Wines at GB1 are sorted by style instead of region, which aids choosing perfect accompaniments. We elected for a crisp dry Pineau de la Loire. As well as sitting gently with the delicate flavours of our food, it offered gorgeous pure fruit characters. A big part for me when eating out, is quality of service, I have no qualms in knocking a tip off the bill if waiting staff have frustrated me. Every member of GB1’s staff I spoke to were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly… impeccable even. Of all I spoke to, I couldn’t find one that hadn’t been there since opening. A triumph for training and staff loyalty, surely. My lunch buddy is a real burger princess, so unsurprisingly opted for the Lobster Burger (£19). Minced coastal lobster and smoked bacon, in a brioche bun with coleslaw. Electing to substitute its listed skinny fries with triple-cooked chips, these proved the only element of the afternoon not to shine. Far from inedible, they simply weren’t perfect. Cheeringly, a lack of smearing on their paper wrapping indicated no excess grease. The burger itself was outstanding, secured with a lobster claw implanted through bun and burger, a willing member of staff stepping in to assist with cracking this open, curtailing our private pantomime. For me the specials menu beckoned, particularly the Hake cooked in saffron (£14). This arrived with cauliflower puree, courgette ribbons, aubergine caviar, asparagus tips, tempura prawn, confit tomatoes and green olives. Cooked to perfection and arranged with the wrist of an artist, it was as much a dish as a thrilling adventure in taste combinations. Not wanting the afternoon to end, we took the unprecedented step of ordering a dessert with our lunch. Not least so we could sit and watch the crowds and clouds for just a while longer. The Lemon Meringue Sundae (£7.50) was an easy choice. The perfect palette cleansing way to end the meal, it had lumps of lemon curd sat alongside cream and sponge balls, with shreds of lemon throughout, keeping the whole affair perky. Perfect. The presentation of every dish was wonderful. It was almost akin to art on a plate. In the words of my lunch partner, everything was “Pretty dam good.” The setting may be glamorous, but the experience was relaxed, the price realistic and the food exquisite. By Stuart Rolt

Shuffle Bar & Kitchen A recent poll by the BBC asked if people feel more or less connected to others than they did a decade ago. Interestingly, in a time when we are inclined to withdraw from the world directly around us in favour of checking Facebook updates on our phone, more people said that they felt neighbourhood ties and links were getting stronger rather than weaker. In many ways any move towards a solely digital future has always triggered an analogue reaction back, just think of how CD’s were supposed to be the end of vinyl. Any successful technological step forward must still contain an intrinsic human connection, whether it’s a hand written slogan over the top of a UKIP poster or a fingerprint smear on the screen of a new smart phone. Technology is a tool to enhance our interaction with the world not a substitute for it. Hairdressers play an interesting role in the local community, their commodity being the informal exchange of information both creatively and conversationally. They have their ear to the ground to the goings on in the community around them. Working as one myself one of the main topics of conversation I’ve been having lately is the redevelopment of the London Road area. The amount of new shops, bars and restaurants rapidly appearing, many of which this magazine has reported on previously are certainly giving London Road a new exciting feel. One of the new establishments contributing to this buzz is the Shuffle Bar and Kitchen

27 York Place | Brighton | BN1 4GU

Nestled amongst the new restaurants and bars at the foot of London road in what is fast becoming the hub of Brighton’s new food and drink scene the Shuffle Bar is a spacious contemporary bar/kitchen. It boasts a German industrial warehouse décor (complete with a custom curved drainpipe bar), offset by the blocks of pastel coloured walls that currently house a fine selection of pop art portraits. As we enter we are warmly greeted by the bar staff with a reassuringly firm handshake. Friendly interactivity is the mantra for this place. We are encouraged to contribute to the constantly rotating custom built digital jukebox, after which the bar is named. We are shown how easy it is to access from our phones and I can report that even this hairdresser was able to follow the few simple steps needed to throw on a tune. A look at the food and cocktail menu handed to me brings me back into the room with a loud stomach rumble. A vast array of ice tea cocktails are Shuffle’s speciality breed of cocktail, perfect for a summers evening. I have known cocktail menus to be a little overwhelming at times but this one is simply laid out in a straight forward clean way which removes any trace of pretentiousness that I feel whenever I hear the word mixology (I am all for sensorial exploration but come on, do I need to know how a magician performed their trick? Just give me a drink that my taste buds will remember!). Happily the Shuffle bar has focused on the straightforward making of a good cocktail over the need to confuse anyone without a chemistry degree.

Understated simplicity continues over onto the food menu. A Shuffle skewer is exactly what it sounds like it is, but with a twist of drama in its presentation. A Shuffle Skewer is presented hanging from what looks like a candleholder with chilli oil that I pour through a small hole above. Slowly the oil makes its journey down the skewer, over the meat, peppers and portabella mushrooms adding a bit of colour and extra flavour to the bowl of garlic salt infused fries sitting below. Mmmm, a feast for the eye as well as stomach. A side order of sliders is a welcome addition to the table. In an area previously renowned for its fast food joints the bite size burgers here are once again evidence of London Road’s newfound refinement. This is refinement it must be said, that is still reasonably priced (£8.95 for 3). Served in a mini artisan sesame bun with lettuce, Cherry tomato and caramelised red onion, there’s a choice of three; A Monterey Jack cheeseburger, a cheddar cheese and bacon burger and my favourite the haloumi and Portobello mushroom. Asking for two of Shuffles most popular cocktails we are presented with a vodka based Berry Mint, a blend of raspberry, Chambord lemon, lime, fresh mint and Absolut vodka (£7.20) and a Bramble which consists of Beefeater gin, blackberry liqueur, lemon and lime (£7.20). Both drinks are suitably summery and more-ish, perfect for sipping in the sun while sitting in the scaffold board decked outside space at the rear of the establishment. The Shuffle Bar is still a work in progress, the rear garden decking will soon become a Sailor Jerry inspired artwork and there is talk of a pizza oven being installed in the kitchen soon. The food and drinks are really very good and reasonably priced. But what I really find appealing about Shuffle is the way it has not been afraid to embrace technology and use it in a really a clever ‘Come in and contribute to the party’ way. For me the friendly feel and good hospitality of Shuffle as well as the new buzz that can be felt on the street outside just goes to show you that when well balanced, the future is an exciting place where neighbourhood ties can happily strengthen.

Buffalo Trace Cocktail Competition Yum Yum Ninja, 7 May

There might have been a plethora of different events in the City during May, but BN1 has just been introduced to a new and exciting world of creativity. Last month we took our first foray into the secretive world of Brighton’s underground cocktail making competition scene.

The elegant surroundings of the Ninja Bar saw 13 crafty cocktail combatants blend showboating, alchemy and a love for their trade, in a sustained effort to win the first prize of travelling to Kentucky for a show down with some of the best cocktail-makers on the planet.

OK, maybe it’s not that big a secret, but it proved an exciting experience regardless. Pan-Asian eatery Yum Yum Ninja, together with Brighton Bartenders Association brought together some of the City’s finest mixologists to compete against each other. Providing the alcoholic standard for the assembled talent was drinks distributor Hi Spirits, who set the bartenders the task of making drinks using their classic Kentucky straight bourbon, Buffalo Trace.

Overcoming some fierce competition, the event finally established a champion in the shape of Cocktail Shack’s Ali Bell, who won an all-expenses paid trip to Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky.

Distilled on the banks of the Kentucky River for over 200 years, Buffalo Trace is the world’s most decorated distillery. Made from the finest corn, rye and barley malt, this whiskey is aged in new oak barrels for years, until the peak of maturity. This extended process gives it a complex taste, which offers hints of vanilla, toffee and candied fruit. The smooth finish lingers on the palate.

Ultimately we left with a finer appreciation of the subtleties of great whiskey, and a deeper understanding of the enormous effort going into making a world class cocktail. Central Brighton, some sumptuous whiskeybased cocktails and a competitive atmosphere like you’ve never experienced. Will our Wednesday afternoons ever be the same again?

Judged by a team of connoisseurs, the whiskey cocktails were judged according to taste, flair and product knowledge. Many utilised their own pre-prepared supplementary ingredients, whilst others brought dry ice, fire, tea services and even old cowboy boots to spice up their presentation.

Coming a close second was Maz Curdon-Pri from Hotel Du Vin who pocketed £100 and a Buffalo Trace goody bag, whilst in third was Yum Yum Ninja’s very own Luke Loddo, who got £50 and a goody bag.
