THE BRUNSWICK TOWN ART FAIR

BRIGHTON YOGA FESTIVAL SAT 23 JULY BRIGHTON DOME CORN EXCHANGE

SUN 17 JULY BRUNSWICK SQUARE GARDENS AND THE REGENCY TOWN HOUSE, HOVE

Brighton Yoga Festival returns to the city for the third year running and is set to be bigger and better than ever. It is the only free festival of its kind in the UK, and for the first time will be held at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange. On Sat 23 July the festival will be offering up a wide range of free yoga and yoga-related activities, from classes, talks, workshops and demonstrations to meditation sessions, therapies and nutrition advice. The festival has been awarded charity status this year, which constitutes a fantastic step towards the festival’s longterm aim to bring the mental and physical health benefits of yoga to as many people as possible. Festival founder Davy Jones says, “whatever people’s age, level of fitness or experience, there will be free yoga for everyone. The day is absolutely packed with new things to try, discover and explore together with stalls, children’s activities and good, wholesome food and drink.” Some sessions will be led by international yoga ‘names’, which have yet to be announced, and the nutrition area will include catering from the well-known Real Junk Food Project. We’d better get practicing our downward dog! There is no requirement to book in advance but there are benefits to pre-registering at www.brightonyogafestival.org

STARBOARD FESTIVAL SAT 2 – SUN 17 JULY BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE WWW.STARBOARDFESTIVAL.COM A brand new festival for, with and by children is coming to Brighton between Sat 2 – Sun 17 July. Starboard Festival brings together local schools, drama groups and young companies alongside more established names, and a strong development programme in a celebration of outdoor performances. Starboard has partnered with the city’s theatres (Brighton Dome, The Old Market, Theatre Royal, Komedia) and South East Dance in order to host some stand out shows. In 16 days of performance there will be over 20 shows, all staged in the magical setting of Brighton Open Air Theatre. Working with the city’s major cultural institutions, Starboard Festival features some of the best national theatre made for children and young people, as well as shows made by young people themselves. Schools from across the city have been inspired to get involved as children will be able to showcase their talent by performing work old and new about what it is like to be a young person in 2016. One school is even performing a play partly in Spanish! Starboard will not only featuring the best performances for young people, but they will actually make them too! Led by critically acclaimed theatre director Ria Parry, young people will work together to create a play in a week, premiered on the final weekend in a double bill with a new play by Iman Qureshi, written for and with students at Cardinal Newman Catholic School. Workshops for both young people and theatre professionals will also be run by some of the county’s top theatre makers including Toby Park, Inua Ellams, Evie Manning and others. Highlights include How to be a Superhero - an immersive show combining magic and storytelling - and a rendition of Macbeth featuring a whopping 101 cast members by Windmill Young Actors. With performances for toddlers, teens and everything in between, expect poetry, pirates, Shakespeare and so much more.

The Brunswick Town Art Fair is returning for a fifth year, bringing high quality, yet affordable, work to the splendour of Hove’s Brunswick Square Gardens and The Regency Town House. This popular free community event features over 50 local artists exhibiting paintings, prints, photographs, cards, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery. Amongst the treats are some hot, exotic and colourful artworks from Seana Mercedes Mallen in an exhibition called Africa, India, Brighton - A Sense of Place. Having travelled widely throughout Africa, India and the Middle East she says she was almost overwhelmed by the richness of the colour, the beauty of the people and the majesty of the landscape. Joining her is Spanish artist Alej Ez, who is inspired by architectural details, city views, landscapes, motion and still life. He grew up in Granada and studied architecture in Seville. Upon visiting Brunswick Square he was taken by the beauty and magnificence of its classical style, repeatedly returning to sketch its different aspects. A stunning installation piece by local filmmaker Andy Baybutt, and Ralph Brown, will feature the famous Brighton Murmuration and the old West Pier. A unique celebration of the amazing roosting display of thousands of starlings over this iconic landmark, the work is set to the music of Debussy’s classic Prélude À L’après-midi d’un faune.

Shopping for children’s clothing can be time consuming, it’s a whole other person’s ‘look’ to consider. It’s a lot for any parent to think about and as their own sense of style develops and you welcomingly celebrate your child’s choice to choose, things can get even more complex. Some days they want to be a power ranger, other days they want to dress as a banana and who are you to disagree, that’s their right. Junior Edition aspires to ‘provide parents and carers with well-designed, high quality products that kids will have fun wearing and adults will enjoy buying’. Focusing on building outfits, providing coordinating pieces, and finishing touches, they ensure that parents and carers don’t have to shop around for ages. Super-cool and oh-so-stylish Georgia from Junior Edition created the company with her husband after wanting more ‘interesting and different clothing’ for their young daughter. Priding themselves on delivering ‘unrivalled’ customer service the Brighton based online store founded in 2015 has very cunningly placed a collection of exclusive uber cool kids clothing all under one virtual ‘roof’. By expertly using social media to showcase their collections, they demonstrate how Instagram should be done, successfully building a customer base without the need of a retail outlet, instead choosing to occasionally take their eye catching assortment of clothing and accessories to pop-up shops and trendy markets. Big on monochrome, they advocate style and out of the ordinary clothing for kids, taking a refreshing step away from the traditional attire we see in stores. Instead they choose to celebrate abstract bold prints with universal appeal using brands that provide good quality, organic, ethical, hip and unisex pieces. It’s difficult not fall in love with something on their site. Whilst many stocked items are structurally designed to appeal to a parent’s innate sense of style that they want to impart upon their children, the designs are playful and cute without being entrenched in fixed gender stereotypes and patterns which sadly saturate much of the high street. This makes Junior Edition’s offering (sorry to say it) ohso-Brighton and oh-so-welcome.

TOGETHER THE PEOPLE FESTIVAL 2016 SAT 3 – SUN 4 SEPT WWW.TOGETHERTHEPEOPLE.CO.UK Celebrating art, music, film and community, Together The People returns to Preston Park on Sat 3 – Sun 4 Sept. An independent, greenfield, non-camping festival, the event aims to celebrate the rich cultural landscape of Brighton & Hove. Taking to the Main Stage on the Saturday night is music legend, Mr Brian Wilson. Performing his genre defining album Pet Sounds, plus a few gems from the rest of his incredible back catalogue, he’ll show why he’s one of music’s most deeply revered figures. With a repertoire which includes nine consecutive Gold albums and more than two dozen Top 40 hits, his performance will offer Brighton a night to remember. Headlining the Main Stage on Sunday night will be Haywards Heath’s (and Tiddington’s…) favorite sons, Suede. This Mercury Prize winning four-piece stormed the charts in the 90s, kickstarting the Britpop movement. With shades of glam-rock, they filled a drab UK indie scene with something that was bold, inspiring and exhilarating. After a lengthy hiatus they’ve returned, older and wiser, but no less compelling. Also joining the line-up are Peter Hook and The Light, who’ll be performing the music of Joy Division and New Order. There’s also a Tru Thoughts Takeover with Lakuta and Tru Thoughts DJs, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, The Horrors, Gaz Coombes, Songhoy Blues, Turin

Brakes, Natty, Fickle Friends and The Island Club. The festival will host three music stages this year, and see the return of the Incredible Moving Picturehouse. The Soapbox stage returns, hosting a selection of talks, debates, poetry, spoken word and acoustic performances from local contributors and beyond. As well as the on-stage entertainment revellers can expect to find local street food, craft beer, roaming entertainers, children’s entertainment, arts and crafts, local ales and workshops. This festival has been created by a group of passionate and independent local businesses and individuals, including leading local concert promoters One Inch Badge and legendary local music venue Concorde 2. While it all might be taking place in the middle of a city, green values sit at the heart of the event’s production. Last year the site was powered by biodiesel or solar technology and saw over 5.3 tonnes of waste recycled. The aim is to deliver a high quality, creative, family friendly and socially aware event. Last year it generated over £2,000 in public donations for local homeless charity Brighton Housing Trust. Bringing together the community, for a spectacular party in the city’s most picturesque park, this is something everyone can enjoy.

TOO GOOD TO GO

THE SCIENTIFIC SECRETS OF DOCTOR WHO

SAT 16 JULY SALLIS BENNEY THEATRE WWW.BRIGHTONSCIENCE.COM

A new takeaway service dedicated to cutting the amount of edible food thrown away by restaurants, Too Good To Go launched its app and website last month. The app, free to download through Apple and Android app stores, acts as a link between eateries with excess food and customers who can place orders to collect it at a reduced price before a restaurant’s end of service. Participating restaurants, portions available and prices are listed on the app. The customer then makes an order, presents a mobile receipt at the designated pick up time and takes away a biodegradable takeaway box with the food on offer. “600,000 tonnes of food is wasted by restaurants each year, whilst it is estimated that one third of all the food produced worldwide doesn’t even make it as far as a plate,” said Chris Wilson, Co-Founder of TGTG UK. “When you think about the impact of such waste on the environment, as well as the fact that over 1 million emergency food parcels were given out by food banks in the UK last year, it just doesn’t make sense for so much perfectly edible produce to be thrown away.” Too Good To Go arrives at a time when food waste is high on both environmental and social justice agendas. Nationally, 2.3 million UK children live in poverty, whilst 10,570 tonnes of food were given out to people in crisis between 2015-16. The TGTG team have also integrated a ‘Pay-It-Forward’ scheme into the app, allowing users to donate meals to those in need for as little as £1. This is already proving popular with Brighton locals who appreciate a venture of such social and environmental standing embracing their community. Since launching in Brighton on Weds 1 June, almost 300 meals have been diverted from bins to bellies. Now, Too Good To Go are continually expanding their portfolio of partner restaurants in the city as they strive to save as much food as possible before rolling out nationwide. Why not download the app to see if there’s anything that can be rescued near you?

I CHARLESTON BRIGHTON: GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT W W W.DANCEBRIGHTONANDHOVE.COM/ WORKSHOPS Determined to win back the Guinness World Record for the most Charleston dancers performing at any one time, I Charleston Brighton are on the search for dancers and volunteers of all abilities to top the current record of 977 dancers made in London last October. If you fancy putting on your dancing shoes and learning to swivel like it’s 1929, head down to the spectacular Roaring Twenties Festival in Bexhill on Tue 23 July, where I Charleston Brighton are teaching both the basic Charleston and the world record attempt routine, with workshops also running throughout July.

The writers of The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who, Simon Guerrier and Dr Marek Kukula, will offer an engaging presentation on the science behind the show. Covering space travel, evolution and multiverse theory, this Doctor Who writer and Public Astronomer demonstrate how Doctor Who uses science to inform its unique style of storytelling – and just how close it has often come to predicting real scientific discoveries. Weaving together authoritative scientific discussion with stories and clips from this BBC TV mainstay, this all-ages event will address subjects as diverse as alien life, regeneration, artificial intelligence and the practicalities (and paradoxes) of time travel. Afterwards the pair will answer questions from the audience. Participants are being encouraged to put forward their questions before the show, and to make them as tricky as possible. If you’ve got a burning query about the science of Doctor Who let them know, and keep those panellists on their toes! The event is suitable for all ages and levels of geekiness…

bella union vinyl store JUST FOR THE RECORD… By Stuart Rolt If you’re a music fan, it’s difficult to ignore the reversal of fortune for the humble vinyl record. Beloved by hipsters, lauded by audiophiles and increasingly embraced by a new generation of listeners, even supermarket giants are behind a format once thought extinct. Now down a tiny, but busy, passageway off Brighton’s Ship Street the diverse and plentiful vinyl offerings of the Bella Union record label are being stocked in all their glory. “It’s to give Brighton another choice and just introduce people to some cool music,” says label boss Simon Raymonde. “There’s some stuff we put out that does fall through the cracks.” After living in Hove for about four years, his wife Abbey walked past the empty shop and realised its potential. Perhaps this opening was on a whim, but both confess to loving record shops, even spending their first few dates looking through racks of vinyl in Montreal. “I thought why don’t we just make it Bella Union only? That’s never been done before.” Raymonde has always worked with music in some capacity. His first job being at one of the Beggars Banquet record shops, he found fame as the bassist for seminal indie outfit Cocteau Twins. They produced seven beautifully ethereal albums, offering a layered sound that swerved the norm and delighted critics. Influenced by the broodiness of post-punk, they used ambiguous ‘mouth-music’ and odd structures to create an otherworldly new form of alternative rock. On a purely commercial scale they were a cult prospect, but as a trio eager to be adventurous their work became hugely influential for scores of bands to follow. Set up by Raymonde and band-mate Robin Guthrie, Bella Union was intended to provide complete creative freedom over the Cocteau Twins’ output. “We’d left 4AD and moved to a major [label], which was obviously a mistake. I thought we’d set up our own label so we didn’t have to speak to stupid people!” Although their band dissolved soon after, Guthrie later leaving the label to concentrate on his own music, Bella Union has continued to grow in stature. Signing and nurturing artists from around the world, their success stories include Explosions In The Sky, Fionn Regan, Fleet Foxes, The Flaming Lips, MONEY, Josh T. Pearson and Dirty Three. “What I’ve noticed is when people come in here, they’ll look through and be like: ‘oh! I didn’t know they were on your label…’” One early signing was BRIT Award

nominee John Grant, who initially joined with The Czars. After this band faded away and he’d taken some time to work through his personal issues, Grant triumphantly returned to Bella Union with the Queen of Denmark album. The night before we meet, Raymonde was attending Grant’s astounding show at the Royal Albert Hall. “I said to him afterwards: ‘you were singing with Kylie Minogue tonight, like what the fuck?!’ It wasn’t that long ago he was in hospital, really unwell. He wasn’t making music, just waiting tables in New York... Those are the stories which get you up in the morning.” Decorated with iconic images of Bowie, Blondie and Dolly Parton, the Bella Union store is dominated by a retro style semi-circular rack filled with a diverse range of vinyl (with a few under-the-counter offerings in other formats). There’s even an American phone booth re-purposed as a listening station. Here’s a return to the old style of record shop, where reputation and interaction was everything. The objective is to present the label’s 20-year history on vinyl. Not an easy task when many titles were released in the late 90s, whilst the format had stopped being such an attractive prospect. With vinyl releases increasing 206% in only five years, turntable sales are similarly soaring. Whilst the medium might not return to the popularity it enjoyed in the 70s, there are signs it has reemerged. “One of the weird anomalies is that not everyone buying vinyl is actually listening to it. There are strange things happening which you couldn’t have predicted.” This shop is clearly aimed to be a destination of sorts, where record buying almost becomes a pilgrimage. Not only are the fans buying direct from the label, there’s a chance to buy the rare and unusual too. Amongst vinyl reissues of much-loved label classics, there’s a Father John Misty tea towel and even the promise of John Grant beard oil to come. It’s about the experience of music being more immersive than simply downloading some data. “This is what I’m invested in,” he gestures towards the piles of vinyl beside him. “It’s what I grew up with, so it means a lot…” The Bella Union Vinyl Shop is at 13 Ship Street Gardens, Brighton, BN1 1AJ. www.bellaunion.com

the island club Former BIMM Brighton band, The Island Club, have the world at their feet. With a new single and several up-and-coming live dates already confirmed, we’re expecting big things from this indie five-piece.

enjoyed a growing fan base since their inception, mainly thanks to their awesome debut single, Paper Kiss, and a string of live shows across the UK. Commenting on their favourite gigs, the indie starlets said:

We recently caught up with the band to discuss their time at BIMM Brighton, their current success and the lessons they’ve learned so far. But first, here’s a bit of background about the band and their journey so far.

“We’ve played some really cool shows over the past year including; KOKO (Club NME), Supporting DID [Dog Is Dead], a sold out headline show at The Prince Albert here in Brighton and this year’s The Great Escape. We even played a show just outside Bordeaux, France, last year, which was an incredible experience. It’s amazing to see people climbing on board to what we are doing and enjoying the music, to us that means the world.”

The Island Club consists of BIMM Brighton ‘Class of 2016’ graduates, Michael (vocals/ songwriting), Julien (guitar), Sam (drums), David (bass) and Barney (synths). Their sound has been described as ‘danceinfused pop with acute sonic awareness’, which takes inspiration from the psychedelic and groovy offerings of Peace, Tame Impala and Chic founder Nile Rodgers, as they elaborate: “Each member of the band has their own influences which contribute to the sound of The Island Club, although we do collectively have shared influences such as Tame Impala, Peace, Michael Jackson, Grimes, NAO and Alt-J. We don’t directly reference these artists when writing as we want to create music which is unique, although these artists do naturally work their way into the sound.” It’s this diverse sound that first caught the attention of BIMM Brighton tutors. The music press has also been complimentary, with Clash, TMRW Magazine, BBC Introducing - The South, Radio X and Amazing Radio all singing their praises. The band have

On the subject of studying at BIMM, Michael, Julien, Sam and David spoke enthusiastically about the teaching staff and the opportunities provided for their students. “It provided a platform to meet other musicians, and that’s how we all met one another. There’s good knowledge in BIMM from the tutors, but you really do get what you put into it. You have to be willing to put the effort in outside of BIMM.” Friends of BIMM, current students and graduates will know of the Masterclass Sessions, which are regularly hosted across their colleges. The workshops often feature interviews, Q&As, demonstrations and live performances from a host of leading musicians and industry experts, from Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason to Lianne La Havas. The Island Club describe their favourite Masterclass Sessions:

“Two masterclasses spring to mind, Ben Thompson (Two Door Cinema Club) and Guthrie Govan. Both were really inspiring to hear about their experiences of working in the music industry,” they enthused. “Those Masterclasses are great to keep focused, almost like a reality check, encouraging us to continue working hard improving every element of the band.” One thing’s for sure, The Island Club’s hard work has definitely paid off. The band is due to play some highly anticipated shows (full tour dates below) to promote their new single, the outstanding Let Go. This 2016 tour will include shows in London and Brighton, as well as a homecoming appearance at the second ever Together The People festival in September. BIMM are incredibly proud of The Island Club and everything they’ve achieved so far. They follow in the footsteps of such BIMM Brighton luminaries as James Bay and Tom Odell. We’re certainly tipping them for great things. The Island Club will play the following tour dates, this summer: Sat 23 July - The Tooting Tram & Social, Fri 29 July - Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, London Thurs 18 Aug – The Joker, Brighton Sun 4 Sept– Together The People Fri 16 Sept - The Finsbury, London www.islandclubofficial.com www.bimm.co.uk/brighton

LOVE REVISITED

VICTOR WOOTEN

MON 4 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON To mark the 10th anniversary of Arthur Lee’s passing, Love Revisited sees his longest serving band perform classic songs from the first three Love albums. Although they sprang from the mid-60s West Coast scene, Love’s sinister psychedelia was at odds with the hippy ideals associated with their era. They went on to become one of the most influential rock acts in a generation. From 1993 until Lee’s death in 2006, the band Baby Lemonade performed with him, prompting a renaissance for Love’s music. Now this band is joined by Love’s original lead guitar player and founding member Johnny Echols. Together they will bring the magic of the legendary Love, Da Capo and Forever Changes albums to the stage once more.

TUES 5 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON Arguably the finest bassist in modern music, this icon is equally at home playing jazz, rock or even gospel. Backed by a band of similarly talented artists, this giant personality’s uncanny ability to create a dynamic range of sounds from a bass is simply astounding. A founding member of the banjo-driven Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, he’s no stranger to blending influences and charging headlong at the boundaries of music itself. This Nashville resident has succeeded as both performer and composer, diverse and expansive he continues to challenge every expectation. Now bass guitars aren’t just there to help keep time.

JOHN COFFEY Image by Tom Roelofs

THURS 7 JULY STICKY MIKE’S FROG BAR WWW.DRINKINBRIGHTON.CO.UK A wild, high-energy Dutch punk band, John Coffey achieved YouTube fame when their lead singer was filmed catching a hurled pint, and then nonchalantly drinking from it - whilst crowd walking. Freakish acrobatic feats like this perfectly encapsulate the surging brilliance of this earnest five-piece. Named after a character in the The Green Mile novel, they’re becoming known across Europe for their energetic live performances and increasingly enthusiastic fans. If you like your music powerful and driven, but deployed with ambitious stadium sensibilities, this is a band you’re probably going to hear about more and more. The best-kept secret in Benelux is coming to Brighton so don’t miss out.

TUES 19 JULY THE HAUNT WWW.THEHAUNTBRIGHTON.CO.UK East Anglia’s most brooding souls are heading out on tour, which good news for anyone who’s heard their catchy and distinctive albums. After a recent break, the quintet is back with a grungier and more cohesive sound. They play with contrasts, allowing melody to break out of the swirling fuzziness. Sometimes there’s even some splashes of anthemic melodies poking out of the rich textures. This year saw the release of their Promise Everything album. It proved to be a genuine resurgence of motivation for the rockers, rather than a simple cashing-in on a past reputation. A level of maturity has even crept in now; amongst the angst there are signs of desire in this comeback.

TUES 19 JULY ROPETACKLE CENTRE WWW.ROPETACKLECENTRE.CO.UK Formed in the summer of 2000, deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee, Hayseed Dixie grew up in cultural isolation. Without any outside influence, the boys played the traditional music of their forefathers on banjo, fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar and acoustic bass. This changed abruptly when the boys discovered several vinyl AC/DC albums in the wreckage of a car. After hearing these on an old 78rpm record player, everyone agreed the songs were right fine country music. The rest is now enshrined in musical history. More recently they’ve been exploring 70s and 80s stadium rock. If you like your music loud with a sublimely sly sense of humour, then these are the rootin’ tootin’ rockers for you.

NED’S ATOMIC DUSTBIN SAT 23 JULY CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK Not all of the 90s was about stiff rock bands regurgitating old Beatles riffs. Out of the Midlands, something far unrulier and exciting sprung. It’s been 25 years since the release of their seminal Kill Your Television single, but its rush of urgency still sounds fresh today. Back then they had a huge fan-base, which travelled far and wide to see the five-piece, everyone affectionately called ‘Neds’ (rather than the more amusing acronym NADs). Crusties, skate-punks or grebos, call them what you will. But this bunch’s spiky indie-rock, and the veritable mountain of T-shirts they sold, sum up the end of the 21st Century before Britpop made everything so safe and boring.

KID CREOLE & THE COCONUTS FRI 8 JULY CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK After last year’s storming (and very much sold out) show, Kid Creole and his Coconuts are back for more. Claiming to have seen a vision of the band walking down New York’s Fifth Avenue, Kid Creole formed this chart sensation out the embers of the brilliant Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. For over 27 years, they’ve been entertaining sell-out audiences worldwide, with their 30s and 40s Hollywood presence and effortless cool. They defy description and buck both musical and fashion trends. Timeless and unique both onstage and in the studio, they remain unmatched in their energy, originality and musical flair. It really doesn’t get much smoother than this.

EVANS THE DEATH

ELAND GRAY Image by David Herndandez

FRI 15 JULY RIALTO THEATRE WWW.RIALTOTHEATRE.CO.UK One of South Africa’s most celebrated and ground-breaking musicians, Gray blends rich, moody song writing with a vast array of alternative guitar techniques. Renowned for his relentless touring schedule as much his mastery of his craft, this singer-songwriter bends sound like no one else. Classically trained in school, he later studied jazz at university. His unique style blends these backgrounds in a combination of fingerstyle guitar picking, rapid virtuoso strumming and percussive playing. Singing with two microphones with different effects, he uses his voice as an unorthodox instrument. Add all of this to his wooden stomp box and violin bow and you have something which is texturally on another planet.

CUT CHEMIST WITH KOOL HERTZ TUES 26 JULY CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK Making a name for himself with the LA-based Unity Committee, Mr Chemist came along for the ride when this bunch formed Jurassic 5. Co-producing their eponymous EP, he spent over a decade recording and performing with this classic alternative rap outfit. His debut solo album, The Audience’s Listening, was released in 2006 to considerable critical acclaim. Since then he’s been collaborating, producing and remixing, there’s even been a spot of acting thrown in for good measure. Whether he’s releasing cratedigging mixtapes, adding some scratchmixing flourishes to other artist’s productions or rocking a party with his choice vinyl collection, Cut Chemist is the epitome of hiphop cool.

FRI 15 JULY THE HOPE & RUIN WWW.DRINKINBRIGHTON.CO.UK Recently returning with Vanilla, their most ambitious and experimental album to date, these Londoners have moved from the roots of their earlier work. It’s more collaborative and abrasive now, retaining pop aesthetics but blending in a bleak introspection. The fivepiece are steering in an ever more adventurous direction - more aggressive, extroverted and raw. Sometimes erratic, in both style and mood, the album is brimming with extreme contrasts. Swinging from noisy to funky to melodic, it’s either energetic or dejected. Full of chaos and restlessness, it’s a brittle but brilliant new chapter in the story of a band who continue to surprise and sometimes confound at every turn.

THE FALLEN LEAVES WILD BEASTS Image by Tom Andrew

THURS 28 – FRI 29 JULY THE OLD MARKET WWW.THEOLDMARKET.COM Kendal and Leeds’ most untamed animals are coming down south! Unique and unmistakable, they mix up odd time signatures, high-pitched singing and some rather risqué lyrical subject matters. Even this level of esotericism can’t prevent them from crashing into the top ten of the album charts with Present Tense. Now they employ keyboard textures and a few more familiar pop music tools, but their quirky nature remains. Dreamy, different and daring, this is a band who challenge our preconceptions of what popular music is all about. With so much commercial pressure on artists these days, it’s refreshing that a band like this can still shine through.

SAT 30 JULY GREEN DOOR STORE WWW.THEGREENDOORSTORE.CO.UK Taking it back to basics, The Fallen Leaves evoke echoes of rock ‘n’ roll’s purer roots. Featuring Rob Green and Rob Symmons, both spending some time with the legendary Subway Sect, familiar musical constructs are reassembled with the instructions upside down. Possibly the finest dressed purveyors of contemporary garage rock, this bunch make a romantic nod to 60s beat-pop music, at least in part. While the sensibilities of slightly naff chart hopefuls are present, everything is delivered with a punk-like zeal. They succeed in the rare trick of being timeless without sounding cheesy, challenging without being discordant. They’re an oddity, make no mistake. And this is something we should all be celebrating…

So we’re all set for another intimate and rather splendid journey into what proper house music means. Returning for guest DJ duties is local hero and all-round underground don - Wax Worx. BOGAN BINGO FRI 8 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON Part granny-thrilling bingo blowout and part retro club sensation, this is one night you should check out. Mullets, mayhem and mass crowd collaboration come together during this high octane, sell-out smash comedy show. Here you get the chance to walk away with one of many prizes up for grabs, including free drinks, bar tabs or an amazing holiday from Travel Talk Tours. After all the ballsthemed fun, the boys step it up a notch with their ‘Shitty Disco’ DJ set. Their dress code is encouraged, never enforced. However, if you want to make the effort and shine, then think about donning something dripping with trailer-trash fashion or 80s passion… One of the best nights in Brighton, this hilarious and chaotic show will keep you talking about it for months to come.

NEON

HEIDI & ICARUS SAT 23 JULY PATTERNS WWW.PATTERNSBRIGHTON.COM DJ Heidi has made her mark on the electronic music world as the guiding force behind the Jackathon party series, eponymous label and regular transmissions for BBC Radio 1. Anyone that’s heard her perform will recognise the passion for music and fiery nature driving her art. Joining her are Bristol-based brothers, Tom and Ian Griffiths. As Icarus they were one of the big standout acts in electronic music last year. Now they bring their rush-inducing dance floor-orientated rhythms to Patterns to complete this amazing line-up. With a love of tight percussion, inventive synth lines and looming pad sounds, they effortlessly blend classic and contemporary.

FRI 29 JULY VOLKS BAR AND CLUB WWW.VOLKSCLUB.CO.UK This mighty sea front establishment venue is getting ready to unleash another slew of proper underground music. In the main room they’ll be smashing out psy-breaks, techhouse, breaks and progressive bangers. There’s fully immersive décor, lasers and banging tunes all night from 11pm - 6am. It’d be rude not to…

SWEET GROOVES

BREAKIN SCIENCE AND DEF:INITION - SUMMER SPECIAL

FRI 8 JULY CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK

SAT 9 JULY CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK

After a fantastic launch, where Sweet Grooves provided a floor-filling after-show party for the Shalamar concert, they return. This time it’s returning bigger and better to keep everyone dancing after this month’s Kid Creole show. The night sees Juice FM’s (and all round local hero) Mike Panteli once again bring his popular Sweet Grooves radio show out of the studio and into the club. Mixing up classic soul, funk and disco anthems, with the unique addition of the old school videos and live performances projected onto the massive screen in this venue as you’re hearing them. So you can dance along with these legendary artists, because it’s a DJ set and a concert rolled into one.

The South Coast and London’s liveliest D‘n’B crews go head to head to rock the Concorde’s foundations. Leading the charge is Ed Rush. Straight out of the emergent London rave scene, he’s been blowing crowds away with his trademark breakneck pace, broken beats and monumental sub-bass. With productions spanning to hardcore and back, he’s always remained at the front of the pack. Together with Optical, he’s written a new set of rules for D‘n’B. Joining him are the equally capable Mampi Swift, DJ Guv, Ruffstuff, Inter, Arcane, Eksman, IC3, Funsta, Harry Shotta and Deefa. Arena two is hosted by Subliminal’s Chats and Jay T and sees Agro, Hybrid and Too Greezey all blasting it out. Can you handle this much energy Brighton? Let’s see you try…

SUPERCHARGED FRI 29 JULY CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK It’s been talked about on the Internet for a while, and now is finally happening once more. After the massive success of last year’s triple-headed party, Supercharged are bringing Stanton Warriors, Plump DJs and Krafty Kuts to Brighton. Breaking into the scene in 2001, Stanton Warriors have dominated dance floors across the world with their rumbling productions. The ‘Plumps’ have had an equally huge impact upon bass music, with an innovative sound and enthralling quad-deck live show. Completing the line-up is Brighton’s very own party-starter, Krafty Kuts. From dubstep to funk and breaks, his passion for the music has seen him push the boundaries – both in the studio and behind the turntables. This is going to be massive.

E:MERGE FRI 29 JULY THE ARCH WWW.THEARCH.CLUB The Arch is launching an upfront night to showcase some of Brighton & Hove’s most exciting DJ talent. It’ll feature artists from some of the most established, cutting edge and forward-thinking local labels and party promoters, including Carbon, Frequency D&B, Jungle Alliance, Motive Sessions, Nu Manoeuvres and Serotone Recordings. A new event series, which brings together much of the city’s drum and bass scene, the aim is to both celebrate and nurture this vibrant underground community.

PURPLE SANE: BOWIE X PRINCE FRI 15 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON We say ‘balls’ to 2016. The world’s greatest talent, geniuses like Alan Rickman, Burt Kwouk, Terry Wogan, Anita Brookner and the bloke who played Admiral Ackbar have been dropping like flies. It’s been a savage year, taking some of the biggest hitters in entertainment. If it was up to the Komedia they’d put a line under 2016 right now and move on. Unfortunately, it isn’t up to them, so instead they’re holding a one-off club night to celebrate two of the biggest names in music. Get ready for a journey through Bowie and Prince’s back-catalogues, as well as a few tracks they’ve influenced. It’ll be a night of pure gold, as two of music’s greatest innovators and performers go head-to-head.

A DJ who’s coined herself a striking reputation for memorable sets, strung together by all realms of house, techno and beyond, she’s ready to smash it once more. Standing as one of Berlin’s most respected and popular resident DJs, mixing the tough with the upbeat she should be on everyone’s list of must-sees.

shura AS REAL AS IT COMES By Kathleen Johnston

She’s a young woman making pop music cool again. Every bit the archetypal modern artist, Shura – born Alexandra Denton to a Russian mother and British father - rose to prominence after her single Touch went viral in 2014. To put into perspective just how popular the track became, the video, directed and edited by Shura herself, now has over 26 million views on YouTube. A deal with Polydor came soon after, and with a debut album out this month, the ever-expanding ‘Shuniverse’ shows no signs of slowing down. Shura’s synth-heavy sound is at once incredibly retro and ethereally futuristic. She cites Janet Jackson and Madonna as influences, and speaks enthusiastically about her love for “both” Whitneys (the band and Houston herself). Think ‘hipster pop’, although Shura says she prefers “to describe it with a term that I’m not sure I really like, it sort of send shivers down my spine, but it’s very easy… indie pop… it’s pop music [but] it’s a way of differentiating it from Katy Perry or Taylor Swift. It comes from my bedroom more or less”. Typically for a new age artist, she boasts a multi-dimensional skill-set and produces a lot of her own material. When I ask about her shift into digital, having found some of her older, folksier stuff online, she tells me quite plainly that that was “…a different era. That was like Jurassic Shu”. The life of ‘new era’ Shura is a world away from when, as a video editor, she would use all of her annual leave “just to record music, so never actually went on holiday.” That’s not to say that she didn’t enjoy that work however. “Video is hugely important to me,” Shura tells me. “My dad is a documentary maker and my mum was an actress [so] I have film in my blood,” which explains why Shura has had so much creative control over the visual counterparts to her songs. Her involvement in her music videos is “one of the luxuries for me, being interested in film.” “The thing about being a musician that’s cool is that you get to do so much other stuff… if you’re big enough. Look at Kanye [West]… doing all these fun things because he can,” Shura says. Like Kanye, Shura is rather active on Twitter. “It’s great for me to be able to communicate who I am in a time where there a lot of people interested in the idea of me being a perfect or exotic thing,” she explains. She uses social media to show that she’s “just a human like everyone else”. Shura’s also keenly aware of the commercial importance of interacting with her fans: “Otherwise the message would be ‘buy my album’ from my record label - because of course that has to happen - [but] it’s really great for me that I can go on Twitter and say ‘oh this is what I’m listening to

at the moment’… or ‘my brother’s just recorded a really embarrassing video of me not being able to tie my shoe laces’, silly stuff like that.” We talk a little bit about how social media and the digital revolution in general have affected the music industry. “When I was 13 and imagining what it might be to be a rock star, we didn’t have Twitter, Soundcloud, Spotify,” Shura reflects. “The reality of [being an artist] is very different to the dream,” she says. “Not that it’s negative, it’s just very different to how I imagined.” She reminds that me “record labels are [still] figuring out how to sell music in an age where people don’t buy music.” Shura articulates this contemporary conundrum nicely when she reasons that with a smart phone, “we have access to every single song ever written in the history of music, in this tiny thing that we put in our pocket [so] we’re still figuring out the fall out from that and what it means for music.” One way the music industry is still generating big money is through live shows, a big part of which are, of course, festivals. As you might expect, Shura’s playing at a whole host of festivals this summer, one of which is this year’s LeeFest Presents: The Neverland. Known for platforming breakout artists such as Clean Bandit, Bastille and Years & Years, this new version of LeeFest is set to be bigger than ever this year, and it’s an event Shura speaks passionately about. She praises the festival’s “focus on booking good people” and tells me how she “was in a cinema a year ago and saw this very strange advert for a festival-about a guy who started a concert in his back garden. So when we got the call to do it I said ‘of course!’” Shura argues that “it’s how festivals should be started, and how we end up with incredible heritage festivals like Glastonbury, they have to start somewhere and LeeFest is an example of that.” Summer may be filled with festivals, but there’s also the eagerly anticipated debut album Nothing’s Real out this month (Fri 8 July). Shura is expecting the release to be “a bit mad.” “I keep referring to myself as feeling like I’m pregnant,” she laughs. “I’m at the sevenmonth stage where it’s like, I’m really glad that everyone is excited but can I just deliver it now?! I’m bored of carrying these extra kilograms around with me.” Shura might envision the release as “a massive relief,” but with the world at her feet, it’s clear that pop’s newest princess is just getting started. Shura plays LeeFest Presents: The Neverland, when it comes to Edenbridge, Kent, on Thurs 28 - Sat 30 July. Her debut album Nothing’s Real is out on Fri 8 July. www.leefest.org www.weareshura.com

COMEDY PLANNER

DAMIAN CLARK AND ALFIE BROWN ALISON THEA-SKOT AND EMMA SIDI SAT 2 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON It seems every comedian in the country is heading to Edinburgh next month, but that’s not before a fine selection of them have previewed their new shows. This double bill sees Alison Thea-Skot rifing the waves of her smash hit Some Like It Thea-Skot with another hour of chaotic character comedy. Hilarious, assertive and a little bit silly, there might be genius amongst this mayhem. Joining her is Emma Sidi, who made a critically acclaimed Edinburgh debut last year. Now she’s heading back, with a generous slab of passionate, obsessive and revengeful character comedy. It might not be for the faint-hearted, but it will be packed with soapoperatic pain, high drama and a little dancing.

GEOFF NORCOTT AND ELLIE TAYLOR THURS 14 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON Here’s an Edinburgh preview with two of the UK’s rising stars. Geoff Norcott is the son of a Trade Union man who grew up on a council estate with two disabled parents – how the hell did he end up leaning to the right? This breath of fresh air on the circuit asks this very question in his new show Conswervative. Irreverent, inspired and incisive, this is satire at its most devastatingly funny. With him is panel show regular, Ellie Taylor, with her new show Infidelliety. It’s all about that pesky bit of marriage known as monogamy. At least, that’s what it was about when she wrote her blurb. It could be 60 minutes on budgies by now.

JAMALI MADDIX AND SOFIE HAGEN SUN 3 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON It’s another Edinburgh preview double bill, both of them works-in-progress from highly talented performers. Originally using the working title ‘Poop’, Sofie Hagen has now changed this since a range of professionals advised against it. She’s a realist at heart, and this Foster’s Best Newcomer Award winner has plenty to offer on the rollercoaster we call ‘life’. There are plenty of big laughs, some self-depreciation and (if you’re lucky) some tales of stalking boybands. Jamali Maddix brings his unprecedented, unedited and unflinchingly funny debut hour to Komedia. The Chortle Student Comedian of the Year is widely regarded as a star in the making.

GEORGE LEWIS, TOM LUCY AND MAGGIE THATCHER’S GAME SHOW THURS 21 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON This time it’s a triple preview bill! One of the youngest and most natural comedians on the UK circuit, Tom Lucy won 2016’s prestigious Leicester Mercury Comedian Of The Year. In just the last six months he’s supported some of his comedy heroes on tour, including Jack Whitehall and Harry Hill. Joining him is George Lewis, a comedian/writer from Stockport. His inventive and subversive humour, along with the confidence of his writing, has helped him scoop awards up and down the nation. Another multi-award winning sensation, Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho, joins the fray with the most fabulous gameshow ever. After sell out Edinburgh shows, the Iron Lady has set her sights on light entertainment. There’ll be songs, games and of course… catchphrases!

TUES 5 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON It’s an Edinburgh preview double bill! The ever-unpredictable Alfie Brown returns to Komedia with a work in progress, after critically acclaimed runs at London’s Soho Theatre. A brand new hour of engaging stand-up, Brown is constantly evolving and innovating in his mission to push his craft further than anyone else. Joining him is Damian Clark, with his new show It’s A Good Day To Damo. Nominated for The New Barry Award, the Aussie has a fresh hurricane-hour of stand up. Quick firing and achingly funny, this festival favourite has been dubbed ‘the world’s wittiest machine gun’. The jokes come thick and fast, but each one is honed to perfection.

PIPPA EVANS AND JOEY PAGE FRI 22 JULY KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON Two talented performers preview their Edinburgh shows before our very eyes. The multi-talented and versatile Pippa Evans is unveiling her seventh Edinburgh offering. You can expect another host of comic oddities and oddball creations. With intertwined narratives and some peculiar mannerisms, these characters live on the periphery of existence. Unlike Evans, who is certainly heading for the big time. Joey Page joins in, and now he’s moved out of his mum’s. He’s worried about the apocalypse, heartburn and the white van men who smoke outside his window though. Apparently in awe of washing machines, he clearly wants to escape reality. So have a swim around inside his head for an hour, the water’s fine and there’s a wicked slide.

So sling another politician on the barbie and settle down to enjoy some top comedy from Brighton’s premier comic performers!

Could it be… an Edinburgh Preview double bill? This time trying out new material is the wonderful Phil Jerrod. Since his stand-up career started he’s failed his PhD, walked out of his job in publishing and been entertaining audiences up and down the country with his elegant rants on the oftenunfathomable problems of modern life. Blessed with unassuming brilliance, he’s instinctive, genuine and very funny. With him is the assured and brilliant Paul McCaffrey. It’s this award-winning comedian’s fifth show in the Scottish capital, possibly the one when he breaks through into major success. Charming, witty and relaxed, his unique style of storytelling is going to take him far.

MAT EWINS AND HOLLY BURN MON 25 JULY THE OLD MARKET WWW.THEOLDMARKET.COM Mat Ewins and Holly Burn try out their best new material in preparation for the Edinburgh Fringe. Critically acclaimed comic Ewins describes his work as ‘well-produced bullshit’. Which plays down its unique mix of video and multimedia, sketches, instinctive comic timing and the absurd. It’ll be a joyous and deliberate car crash. The compelling Holly Burn also unleashes her new work, proving that she is special. At least more special than you. Much to her chagrin, the world at large has failed to catch on to this fact. As the self-proclaimed voice of Generation Y, she’s wondering why the life that she’s due is eluding her? Using her trademark energy and tight writing, she’ll show why.

AIDAN GOATLEY AND JOHN ROBERTSON WEDS 13 JULY SWEET DUKEBOX WWW.SWEETVENUES.COM/BRIGHTON Edinburgh preview fever is spreading across the city, and the Dukebox is offering them free and super fresh. A degree in scriptwriting and an accidental career in management has somehow given Aidan Goatley a foundation for comic gold. He’s certainly run into some appalling people, but everyone has something to teach us. He’s got a knack for tight and compelling story telling and plenty of experiences to draw from. Last time we saw a picture of John Robertson he had a gun in his mouth, although there’s little need for shock tactics when you’re as talented as this. Taking a wry look at the darker and weirder sides to human behaviour, he blends extreme experiences with clever wordplay. Bold, dramatic and hilarious, these hilarious anecdotes simply fill the room.

SIMON PLOTKIN AND DOUGIE WALKER WEDS 27 JULY SWEET DUKEBOX WWW.SWEETVENUES.COM/BRIGHTON It might be another Edinburgh preview, but it’s free and rather fine indeed. Simon Plotkin dons the guise of Gerald Galbraith, a twee and bereaved Scottish children’s entertainer. So he’s grown a beard and gone full art-folk. Can he achieve the greatness he thinks he already has? Join Gerald for an evening of poetry and hear his palpably unique and possibly moving story. Dougie Walker is proud to present his second one-man show. After the unmitigated success of Möglich earlier this year at Perth and Adelaide Fringes, he’s somehow found the time to concoct a brand new hour of dark and imaginative comedy. Packed with weird stories, off-kilter characters and uncanny sketches, his impressive and clever show expands the boundaries of sketch comedy.

ANNE-MARIE A NEED FOR ALARM By Freya Hughes

The most exciting event of August, the most community-based day of the year, probably the most fun you’ll ever have in Preston Park. Brighton & Hove Pride is circled in thick red pen on my calendar every year and 2016 is no different. National and international stars will keep the various stages jumping including the likes of Sister Sledge, Fleur East, Carly Rae Jepsen and emerging solo star AnneMarie. Not to mention a great range of DJs and other entertainment, you’d be mad to miss this year’s event. Cutting her teeth in the music industry with the Rudimental boys for the last two years, Anne-Marie’s solo career has started with a bang. “Each song I write is a true story so being able to get that bit of story out is great,” she tells me. This style of writing allows her to connect on a personal level to fans and listeners, as she’s able to get her emotions and messages across. It’s evident this is the case looking at her recent releases and especially new single Alarm. This is a song that really bears down to the grit of love and loss. A track that many can relate to, the 25-year-old’s sound is a unique blend of edgy pop, R&B and hip-hop. She aims to keep her art personal, with such a demanding industry this is no mean feat though expresses her disdain for people’s lack of originality.

“I’m quite strong minded and I know what I like so they kind of have to get used to that,” she laughs. The singer explains, “because the lyrics are so obvious and they’re, like, conversational saying like ‘this is what happened’, instead of shoving that in peoples faces, we kind of wanted to make it more beautiful and aesthetic so I think they work really well together.” The age-old tale of unrequited love is recreated in Alarm’s visual conterpart. The beautiful aesthetic that Anne-Marie describes is exactly right, almost a ten-years-later snippet of Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 classic. It gives the song more intensity with the fiery scenes of candles and sex alike. The album will see its release this year but the date is yet to be confirmed.

But what about Brighton? Anne-Marie tells me that she was here just the other month at The Great Escape festival, though has never been to Pride. As well as being incredibly excited about performing, she is also looking forward to seeing the parade and the park attendees. “The atmosphere is absolutely ridiculous and everyone is just up for it. And also all the beautiful colours, because everyone dresses so brightly, it makes me want to step up my game and get a really bright outfit!” Clearly understanding Brighton & Hove’s love of rainbow colours and flags, we’re set for a great weekend. She adds, “I hope it’s sunny!” And so do I – last year’s event saw the sun shine down all day long, almost the universe’s way of smiling at Brighton & Hove’s Pride and inclusive attitude. A broad range of influencers coming from the likes of Sia and Christina Aguilera, Anne-Marie’s sound is a blend of modern and past superstars. “I think Alanis Morrisette was a massive influence on the way I write and the lyrics and stuff like that but then my parents kind of listened to, like, Paul Weller and The Who and reggae and ska music. My dad’s a mod so I kind of grew up on all that sort of stuff.” Each artist she speaks of is present in the undertones of the tunes she’s producing. With such an eclectic taste she tells me it was tricky to decide on a direction with her songs. “I’ve literally been influenced by so many people it was hard to like choose a genre of music to go down. I’ve kind of mixed everything together.” It’s clear that this artist was keen to forge her own path. The fresh and new style that Anne-Marie brings to the charts is welcome now more than ever as the depth of her music is clear. “I don’t want to write a song that just means nothing.” Her fellow Pride artists are clearly exciting her too. She will indeed be sticking out the evening to party with the likes of us Brighton folk. Though she may not have realised before our chat, she’s now incredibly pumped for the day. “Sister Sledge! Oh, Sister Sledge is ridiculous! I’m well excited for that now!” Brighton & Hove Pride 2016 will be celebrating across the city from Fri 5 – Sun 7 Aug. www.brighton-pride.org / www.iamannemarie.com

ooosh! tours By Stuart Rolt

Experienced and knowledgeable, Ooosh! Tours have been keeping artists as varied as Lonnie Liston Smith and Patrick Wolf to Royal Blood and Alabama Shakes out on tour. No matter how complex or large a production is, their large facility in Portslade has got everything that might be needed. And now they’re taking their services to the next level. Director Jon Wood started the company in late 2008. Working as a tour driver and manager for a range of local bands, like Blood Red Shoes, he found himself in the agreeable position of having too much work. Purchasing another van, he started buying equipment for bands to hire out. From there everything just snowballed. “I eventually took myself off the road and started concentrating on hiring everything out.” Drawing from their many years of road experience, Ooosh! strive to provide a wide range of services to ensure artists with a hassle-free tour. From an amp for a solo pub gig to organising transport, road crew and backline for international outings, they’re able to fulfil almost any need of the modern working musician. Armed with knowledge, skills and solutions, their services are invaluable for up and coming bands, busy tour managers or promoters overwhelmed by logistics. Once the cornerstone of their operation, Ooosh! Tours’ van hire still plays an important role in keeping clients on the road. Converted Mercedes Sprinters, these provide comfortable travel for nine people and equipment on even the most gruelling of tours. The Ooosh! Tours building itself houses a score of different instruments, drum kits and amplifiers ranging from the classic to the modern. “Every now and then we do run out,” he admits. “Normally during The Great Escape… I did work out once we could keep 25 simultaneous bands on the road.” From this huge, and still growing, stock of equipment available, drummers can hire Gretsch Renown or Yamaha Stage Custom kits to cowbells and djembes. Bassists can choose from a range of instruments, including the classic P-bass or Gibson EB-O. Whilst amongst the Stratocaster and Les Paul guitars, there’s also a rather tasty selection of odd little 60s and 70s Japanese brands and imitations. There’s the usual amplifier and

speaker brands like Marshall and Orange, as well as a few more exotic models. Keyboards from modern Rolands to an old school Wurlitzer, as well as two Hammond rigs complete with Leslie rotating speakers. “We’ve got anything you can think of, or know where we can get hold of it.” They can even rent you flight cases, a table, flute stand or even a massive fan (if you haven’t got any – arf!). Now there’s a significant expansion underway. Lee Webber, whose father started London’s renowned Ritz Studios, is bringing her considerable expertise and experience to the company. Two enormous rehearsal rooms have also been constructed in their building, now allowing bands to perfect their stage shows. Both spaces are bathed in natural light and decorated with a brick finish beneath a tongue and groove wooden ceiling; one is 600 ft2 whilst the other is a massive 1,400 sq ft. That’s roughly the size of an average festival stage. “Because the ceiling is so high, about 4.5m at its highest point, if you want to put in a lighting rig you can. The room’s completely flexible. You can lay yourself out any way you want in there. It will sound good whatever.” The two spaces are tied together with XLR and Cat6 lines, also equipped with three-phase power, a lighting truss and even individual production offices. Although Brighton’s really well served for great hourly-hired rehearsal rooms there’s nothing on this scale. Many similar facilities in London also suffer from placement in fairly remote locations. Ooosh! enjoys being a 60-second walk from Portslade’s bustling Boundary Road, a rail line and four roads to Brighton nearby. This area’s fortunes are currently changing, reflected by a growing number of great places to eat and drink. It also enjoys great transport links, with a nearby train station. “Brighton’s becoming quite expensive. So a lot of people now live just around the corner from us.” The biggest rooms south of the capital, with plenty of parking and power for tour-buses, Ooosh! seem to be offering an alternative to the hassle and expense of travelling to London. “Clients would come to us and pick up backline, then whizz off to rehearse. So a lot of them should be very interested. I think we’re a viable option.” Ooosh! Tours are at Compass House, 7 East Street, Portslade, Brighton, BN41 1DL. www.oooshtours.co.uk

toddla t By Ka thlee nJ oh ns ton

Toddla T may have a predilection for heavy bass lines and a big fat sound system, but these days he’s more of a family man than an all-night raver. We caught up with the producer, DJ and all round music aficionado ahead of his show at Boundary Brighton to talk culture, kids and the route to happiness. Tom Mackenzie Bell has been a firm fixture on the UK music circuit for more than a decade. The baby-faced basshunter from Sheffield has been DJing since he was just ten years old. The name Toddla T was given to him by older DJs in his early days as are ference to his relative youth. He has, quite literally, been living and breathing music his entire adult life. Bell first garnered significant attention after working on Roots Manuva’s Slime & Reason back in 2008 and is now one of the most popular purveyors of dancehall, reggae, grime and garage in the country. Together with his long-term partner and fellow Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, he also makes up one half of the UK music scenes coolest power couple.

“People are looking at us more than ever, even on a mainstream level [like] Drake and Kanye.” As life and cuisine, the British way is ever propelling towards inclusivity. He seems genuinely adamant that the UK makes the most exciting music in the world, referring to the mixing pot of genres forming our culture. Ever a fan of analogies, Bell also talks passionately about the ways in which the Internet has created an equal platform. With the volume of available music and the ease of its consumption he suggests producers have to work harder, because the cream will still rise to the top. For Bell, success is intrinsically tied with quality. “I do think that no matter how much money you spend on it, how much you dress it up, who plays it or who features on [the track], it all comes down to the music and that’s the essence of all of this.”

A true genre fusionist, Bell says that he’s “always been across the spectrum.” He maintains there is a common theme running through all of the genres he’s drawn to. “I’m excited by all kinds of stuff and I always have been. So people might get confused [but] in Britain we have a thread that no other country has. That thread is sound system culture.”

He still loves nothing more than sitting in his studio with the music blasting. “That’s the passion that makes me want to make t-shirts and do the raves,” he explains. Given his years of success and the proliferation of Toddla T merchandise, you may be surprised to hear that Bell has never thought of himself as a businessman. By his own admission, if he did he’d be making records that made more money. But he’s able to rationalise his non-mainstream leanings. “I could really go for it and make a fuck load of cash, but I wouldn’t be happy.”

“When you’re at Notting Hill Carnival and you walk through the route you hear all different kinds of music, but it all fits into one bracket,” argues Bell, who not only now lives within the carnival’s area but hosts his own sound system there every year. Bell acknowledges the influence of Jamaican culture both on his own musical tastes and on UK music, with an emphasis on being played off a big bass heavy system in general. The medley of cultures is present not only in his music however. He praises Britain’s multiculturalism as a whole. He’s also proud of the music scene he’s part of.

Other than music, the one thing making Bell incredibly happy is his three-year-old son with Annie Mac. When asked about how he balances a work life characterised by latenight dance parties with a family, he tells me, “if I don’t drink and I don’t party the next day I’m tired but I can [still] give it 100%.” For Bell, like many of us, staying sober can be “easier said than done, because there are times when you are in a rave, where your friends are bubbling and there’s alcohol flowing and the party’s great and you forget about the next day.” Ultimately however, the proud dad maintains there’s

no more joy than seeing your child happy. He finds it more powerful than any night spent smashed and chatting nonsense in the back room of a club. While he may be taking it easy these days, this new pace has no detriment on his shows. Toddla T is more in demand than ever, with a whole host of festival gigs lined up for the summer, including Brighton’s very own Boundary Festival. Bell peruses the event’s bill whilst we chat and reminisces about how “some of my earliest memories of DJing, outside of where I’m from, are of Brighton.” He praises our city’s thriving music scene telling me, “there’s always something happening and there’s a lot of progressive music. This festival seems to me to be bringing it all together.” Bell sums this up by noting, “you’ve got a real wide range from straight-up techno to sound system reggaebased stuff, so it’s a good representation of the nightlife across the line up.” As with everything he does, Bell is approaching the future with boundless enthusiasm. There’s a BBC documentary on Notting Hill Carnival in the works and a new album ready to go, as well as whispers of a Toddla T label. Bell may be at a high point in his career, but he’s certainly not going let that skew his familial priorities. Giving up the partying is not seen as a sacrifice. “It’s making sure you’re disciplined with yourself and you can give attention to the person that matters most in your life. That’s way more rewarding than any gig I could ever do.” It seems that Tom Bell has perhaps figured out how to have it all. Toddla T comes to Boundary Brighton on Sat 17 Sept. www.boundarybrighton.com www.toddlat.com

BEER GARDENS

Surprisingly enough, it can be a tricky process trying to find the perfect pub garden for soaking up the sun in our seaside city. Brighton & Hove may be famed for their beaches, but the relatively small number of south-facing gardens means you can often end up spending a warm afternoon chasing the sun around the city. This summer, we’ve done the ‘hard work’ for you, and have compiled a handy list of Brighton & Hove’s ultimate pub gardens, for when only a cold pint in the sunshine will do.

THE SETTING SUN

1 WINDMILL ST, BRIGHTON, BN2 0GN WWW.SETTINGSUNBRIGHTON.COM

PATTERNS

10 MARINE PARADE, BRIGHTON, BN2 1TL WWW.PATTERNSBRIGHTON.COM OK so admittedly, Patterns is not technically a pub, and nor is their terrace a beer garden, but it’s a bloody great place to have a drink in the sun. Open all year round and with views of the pier, the terrace is kitted out with wooden panelling and furniture so brightly coloured it screams ‘summer’. Line your stomach with hot dogs and chips from The Dog Haus whilst enjoying one of Patterns’ many cocktails and by night, if you’re still standing, head inside for tunes provided by a live DJ. Also worth mentioning is the weekend brunch, which includes unlimited Bloody Marys and Prosecco. Need we say more?

THE CONNAUGHT

48 HOVE ST, HOVE, BN3 2DH WWW.CONNAUGHTPUB.CO.UK Situated just up from the seafront in Hove, The Connaught Pub & Kitchen boasts a beautiful, secluded beer garden with plenty of cute picnic tables. Far more spacious than many of the more central establishments, The Connaught’s garden gets plenty of sun and has a chilled out vibe. There’s both a patio area and plenty of grass, as well as lots of lovely plants scattered around the edges. The pub is dog friendly too, so you’ll often find a couple of adorable pooches catching some rays alongside their owners. Aside from the garden, the real clincher is that The Connaught does fantastic food, most notably the mountainous roasts served on a Sunday. Be sure to book in advance though, as they do get very busy.

THE HAMPTON ARMS

57 UPPER N ST, BRIGHTON, BN1 3FH WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HAMPTONARMS TThe Hampton is a cosy pub just a few minutes from the centre of town in the Clifton Hill area. This little place has a good food menu and a nice selection of cask ales, ciders and wines. The pub is fabulously intimate and makes for a great winter watering hole, but The Hampton can also be an ideal summer spot as the southfacing garden gets a lot of sun. The little courtyard out the back is compact but as the pub is hidden away behind the back of Western Road, you can often get lucky and find the garden rather empty.

This little gem on Windmill Street in Hanover has arguably the best beer garden in the city. The small, low-walled garden provides breath-taking panoramic views of Brighton & Hove and the surrounding area. On a clear day you can see all the way to Worthing Pier, 12 miles away. The view also includes a lot of ocean, so much so that on a hot day with a glass of rosé in hand, you’d be forgiven for feeling as though you’re sat somewhere in France. With a friendly, intimate atmosphere and good food to boot, it’s well worth hiking up the hill to visit The Setting Sun. Just make sure to get there early, as this local favourite fills up fast!

THE CRESCENT

6 CLIFTON HILL, BN1 3HL WWW.THECRESCENTPUB.CO.UK/CONTACT.HTML This lovely pub in Seven Dials boasts a brilliant suntrap out at the back. The paved garden is spacious and ideal for larger groups. The space is furnished with wrought iron tables, umbrellas for those rare occasions when it gets just a little too hot, and plenty of seating. The Crescent serves locally sourced food every day, and has great selection of world beers. They also have an impressive range of spirits, especially gin and vodka, perfect for those days when a beer just won’t do. Situated on Clifton Hill, The Crescent is out of the way enough that it rarely gets rammed, but also central enough so that you can pop up there from town in a matter of minutes.

NEIGHBOURHOOD

101 ST JAMES’S ST, BRIGHTON, BN2 1TP WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/NEIGHBOURHOODBRIGHTON This Kemptown institution on St James’s Street has a big paved garden perfect for a summer of revelry. Neighbourhood is staunchly independent, which explains why this popular spot has such eccentric décor. Inspired by dive bars with a strongly artistic vibe, this two-floor venue is bursting with mismatched furniture, locally produced artwork and vintage nick-knacks. There’s plenty of seating outside and, although walled on all sides, the garden still gets sun all afternoon. You can even book one of their cabanas, should you and your friends want to make like you’re in Miami for the evening. Well, not quite, but hey there’s palm trees! Live music means that the garden - complete with BBQ and brightly coloured furnishings – is an ideal place to kick back and relax on a warm evening.

HOVE PLACE

THE GOOD COMPANIONS

Hove Place is a casual ‘bistro pub’ in the heart of Hove, just off Church Road. A firm favourite with locals, their stunning Italian garden is a welcome sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. Their modern British food comes highly recommended and, separated into bistro, pub and deli menus, caters to all sensibilities. The garden is beautifully furnished, complete with heaters for those days when there’s no choice but to submit to our typical English weather. The garden is lovely at any time of day, but if it’s hot and sunny it’s best to head there early as once you’ve got a seat you won’t want to leave! They even have an outdoor TV screen for those of you who just can’t miss out on the summer’s sporting events.

The Good Companions on Dyke Road is another pub in the Seven Dials area that boasts a large garden. Recently refurbished, The Good Companions has both a paved front area complete with enormous benches and a large decked courtyard out back. The back garden is kitted out with panelled booths (each with a very handy heater) and plenty of picnic-style benches, should you be unlucky enough to miss out on a booth. The Good Companions serves great, locally sourced food and offers a combination of real Sussex ales and world beers. The pub tends to be at it’s busiest on Friday afternoons, and thanks to the buzzy, friendly atmosphere, it’s an ideal spot to meet mates for an after work drink in the sun.

REVOLUTION

WEST ST, BRIGHTON, BN1 2RA WWW.REVOLUTION-BARS.CO.UK/BAR/BRIGHTON

The Brunswick is an independently owned pub in Hove, just off the seafront on Holland Road, known primarily as a live music venue. The pub itself is huge - there’s the main room, the basement and the music and arts room dubbed ‘The Venue’ – but so is the garden. This space is undoubtedly one of the biggest and sunniest in all of Brighton & Hove, with plenty of picnic-style benches and larger tables perfect for groups. They do a good range of drinks (including some great craft beers) and serve food by Gorilla Grill & BBQ, which features American-style pub grub such as burgers and hotdogs. Word on the street is that the garden may be refurbished soon, so keep your eyes peeled, as it may be even better!

Formerly known as Vodka Revolution, this is undoubtedly the nicest place you’ll find on West Street. Although not strictly speaking a ‘pub’, this bar boasts Brighton’s biggest outdoors drinking area (with the exception of the beach of course!). Beyond the courtyard space used primarily by in-and-out smokers, you’ll find a sprawling area filled with plush sofas and wooden spaces, ideal for parking yourself all night long. With a giant drinks menu and a mouth-watering food menu to boot, you could spend all evening here after the sun goes down. As well as the nicely finished garden and the main room, there are bars both upstairs and down, meaning there’s never a dull moment at Revolution.

THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR

THE SIDEWINDER

Just up from Brighton Station on Guildford Road, The Battle of Trafalgar is a great back-street spot for pub traditionalists and sun worshippers alike. A world away from some of Brighton’s more pretentious establishments, it’s the locals that largely frequent The Battle of Trafalgar. A real hidden gem, from the front you’d never guess that this pub boasts one of the loveliest beer gardens in Brighton. It’s surprisingly large with lots of seating, and although rather urban in feel, there’s a still lot of greenery. This old-fashioned pub has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and serves a range of ales. Lynsey’s Kitchen is responsible for the traditional pub grub served here, with a focus on providing vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

The Sidewinder on Upper St James’s Street boasts not only one but two huge beer gardens, giving you ample amounts of room in which to catch those precious summer rays. As with the majority of venues on this list, those kind people at The Sidewinder have very sensibly kitted out both gardens with heaters, for those days when even in the sun it’s a little chilly. The kitchen is run by Smokin’ Gringos, serving up Mexican street food every day with the exception of Sundays, where roasts and a build-your-own-Bloody-Mary bar take centre stage. Oh, and there’s also a multi-award winning hair stylist running a shabbychic salon upstairs, because you know, it’s Brighton, after all.

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR

something street Head down to the far end of Madeira Drive, Brighton, before the end of September and you’ll find a small slice of time travel in the form of new, immersive theatre experience Once Upon a Time on Something Street. When you first arrive at the site, you’re greeted by an artificial grass garden and a glorious sea-view. It’s packed with picnic chairs, tables and umbrellas, along with two bars and several food vendors housed in a variety of shipping containers. This area very much feels like someone’s garden, which only adds to the feeling that we’ve entered someone else’s world. It’s a mere taste of what’s to come. The view from this garden area onto the beach is fantastic and if the weather was better it’d be a lovely place to sip a cocktail, even if you don’t attend the show or have already seen it. A custom built street has been created in a kind of black box on the site, complete with an alleyway and a mysterious series of numbered front doors. As you enter, you immediately wonder what lies behind each one. The anticipation builds as the large audience is split into groups and assigned a timekeeper with a stopwatch, to take you on your journey and make sure you don’t lose track of time. I don’t want to ruin any surprises for you, but I can say that what follows is a brief glimpse into the lives of one particular family throughout the decades, the Stammers family. How is everyone connected? Well that’s for you to figure out. As well as scenes from the past and present playing out in front of your eyes, brief moments of audience interaction with these characters reveal there’s perhaps more to the stories of these people’s lives than we first imagined. Ending with an introspective look at your own life on New Year’s Eve, the final day in everyone’s calendar. The show leaves you feeling as if you’ve just experienced something very special indeed and its message is sure to stay with you for some time afterwards. Be sure to check out Once Upon a Time on Something Street for yourself before it disappears into the mists of time this September, and see what you discover about the characters, and perhaps even yourself. Performances of Once Upon a Time on Something Street are: Weds & Thurs - 7pm, 8pm & 9pm Fri - 6pm, 7pm, 8pm & 9pm Sat & Sun - 2pm, 3pm, 6pm, 7pm, 8pm & 9pm Until Sept 4 2016 Buy your tickets now at www.somethingstreet.co.uk

THURS 14 JULY THE OLD MARKET WWW.THEOLDMARKET.COM

Bill Kenwright presents a new production from the pen of the legendary award-winning writing team Levinson and Link, whose work includes Murder, She Wrote and Columbo. The cast features Gary Mavers of Peak Practice and Casualty fame, alongside Footballers’ Wives star Susie Amy. Joining them is Carry On actress Anita Harris and 60s pop-idol Mark Wynter. The story follows playwright Alex Dennison, who is left heartbroken when his fiancée and leading lady apparently commits suicide. On the anniversary of that ill-fated night, he assembles the same cast and crew in the same theatre, for a reading of his new play. It becomes clear Alex thinks Monica was murdered and intends to uncover her killer...

An out-of-work actor’s frustrations explode over breakfast, an ex-skinhead recalls an exuberant racist graffiti spree with a ghostly twist, and a would-be suicide sees a lost paradise returning with a timeless message of hope for our uncaring world. 26 years ago, in the hopeful summer after the fall of the Berlin Wall and before Saddam burned the oil wells of Kuwait, audiences and critics in Brighton and Edinburgh rushed to witness a young actor’s stunning solo debut. Last seen in Brighton in 1997, that very show - a triple bill of world premières with an unashamed title - is returning for one night only this month. It sees George Dillon on a bare stage, giving a bravura high-energy performance of three tales of imagination run wild: Master of Café Society by Steven Berkoff, the title story by Glaswegian writer Robert Sproat and Dillon’s own adaptation of Dostoevsky’s The Dream of a Ridiculous Man.

This is an interactive theatre game, where Casualty meets CBeebies. The patients might be stuffed, but the drama is very real. Unleashed from the minds of Firecat Masquerade, this is another alternative production from a very talented team of creatives, makers and performers. Again playing with the senses and bringing unique ideas to life, they present us with a darkly humorous operating thriller. It juxtaposes frantic action and tough decisions with gentle childhood whimsy. An understaffed, inexperienced surgical unit must cooperate to diagnose, triage, and treat cases against an ever-increasing workload. It usually takes 14 years of training to work at this level. You have got just minutes to step in and save a teddy bear’s life…

Brighton Little Theatre take Oscar Wilde’s most enduringly popular play outside. Full of high farce and witty dialogue, it was written shortly before he fell from grace. It’s a master class in lying to get out of social or domestic duties so you can do something more enjoyable. There’s also lots of commentary on marriage, the illusion of respectability, class divisions, gender politics, how privilege warps reality and sheer foolishness. Two bachelor friends, upper-crust dandy Algernon Moncrieff and the most reliable John Worthing JP, lead double lives to court the attentions of the desirable Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The gallants must grapple with the hilarious consequences of their ruse, and face the formidable Lady Bracknell…

CAST IRON THEATRE: RICHARD HEARN FRI 22 – SAT 23 JULY SWEET DUKEBOX WWW.SWEETVENUES.COM/BRIGHTON Every few months Cast Iron Theatre produces an evening of six ten-minute plays from Brighton & Hove’s (and sometimes beyond…) most vibrant writers. Drawing from the rich pool of talent close at hand, this troupe presents some big ideas in short bursts. They select works that are exciting and involving, then present them using a specially chosen group of local actors and directors. This makes their shows the best place to see some of the freshest writing in the city. This time Richard Hearn’s work is showcased by Cast Iron, and this local playwright has provided many of the company’s most memorable pieces. SUN 17 JULY THEATRE ROYAL BRIGHTON WWW.ATGTICKETS.COM/BRIGHTON

Put that smartphone down for just a second… A piece of Brechtian epic theatre, Caryl Churchill’s thought-provoking play explores what it means to love and form relationships in the modern world. How has the limitless stream of information on offer affected our lives? We now have minuscule attention spans, so this is echoed by the work’s quickfire succession of scenes. As the audience are besieged by information and technology, the play shows a kaleidoscope of snapshot conversations. It explores the private as well as public consequences of living in the digital age, where access to information is both instant and changeable; where we are often socially isolated in the way we connect with each other and the world.

Britain’s first Hollywood superstar’s life is revisited in a heart-warming and powerful musical show. Weaving through this icon’s austere childhood on the dark streets of Victorian London, through to the glitz of the emergent film industry, it’s a true ‘rags to riches’ story. Bringing his incredible tale to life is an all-star West End cast; including Coronation Street’s Steven Arnold and Nicole Faraday from Emmerdale. From the stages of south London, to creating the hapless Little Tramp character and to creating some of the most cutting social commentary of his era, Chaplin had few equals. His story is perhaps the story of the cinema itself, from humble beginnings to being the most famous name in the world.

Kick off your Sunday shoes, as this explosive rock ‘n’ roll musical sensation bursts onto the UK stage in a remastered show sure to get those toes tapping. Based on the 80s hit film which took the world by storm, it sizzles with the same spirit of youth, rebellion and romance. Produced by the award winning team at Sell A Door Theatre Company, who brought us Avenue Q and American Idiot, it stars Gareth Gates as Willard and Maureen Nolan as Vi Moore. City boy Ren thinks his life is over when he is forced to move to Bomont, an American rural backwater. But things are far worse than he could have ever imagined, as the town bans dancing. It isn’t long before Ren can’t resist breaking the rules, and he’s not alone. Say ‘no way!’ to grumpy grownups, and say ‘hell yeah!’ to fashionable haircuts and dancing like no-one is watching…

Dates. What are they all about anyway? Nervous before, foot-in-mouth moments during, we all know the desperate attempts to decode signals from the other person. A game of ‘Cat & Mouse’ where both parties KNOW they are the mouse… Ryan and Laura now find themselves on a second date and in his bedroom a week after their first chance meeting in a nightclub. Now the only place to sit is on the bed. Perfectly fitting with the British flair for creating awkward comedy, prepare to enter a world of crap chat-up lines and paranoid internal dialogue. This hapless pair finds themselves in a very common situation, as they try their best to embark upon a spot of sexual misadventure. A funny, clever and engaging show, it explores the self-conscious aspects of human nature and dating behaviour.

HAPPILY NEVER AFTER TUES 19 JULY 88 LONDON ROAD WWW.88LONDONROAD.COM Award-winning improvisers The Maydays take your suggestions and allow a unique tale to unfold. A group of exceptionally skilled performers, they bring an air of unpredictability. It all happens in a dark and twisted environment inspired by the warped imaginations of film director Tim Burton and the Brothers Grimm. This musical tale explores a world of strange possibilities and all that flows from it. With black comedy, imaginative physicality and a bespoke improvised soundtrack, this will be a truly creepy, atmospheric and fantastical experience. But will there be a happy ending?

TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES TUES 26 - SAT 30 JULY BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE WWW.BRIGHTONOPENAIRTHEATRE.CO.UK Hardy’s timeless classic still has plenty to say about religion, social convention and exploitation. It’s set at a time when the English aristocracy is beginning to fade and big business is rising, whilst double standards prevail amongst a puritanical society. Cast out by a hypocritical community, an innocent country girl’s world fills with love, loss and tragedy. Four actors play multiple roles in this enigmatic and fast paced telling of virtue and injustice. Bringing to life the Wessex of the past and honouring the story’s beautiful countryside setting, they’ll show the impact of people’s actions on the human condition. Along the way there’ll be fun, interaction, laughter and song tying this heart-breaking tale together.

bicycle film festival brighton

MOTION PICTURES By Stuart Rolt

Cycling fans from around the UK and Europe will be flocking to Brighton for the Bicycle Film Festival this month. Coming to the Duke of York’s Picturehouse on Thurs 14 – Sat 16 July, the event is dedicated to those who share a passion for adventure, travelling, exploration and bicycles. Centered around short films from established artists to emergent filmmakers, the festival celebrates the numerous positive aspects of cycling. “Health, self-discovery, challenge, environment, ecology, community – there are so many stories for a great film,” says organiser and High & Over producer, Mark Joffe. “And story is exactly what every film director is after. I’m sure our audience will be overwhelmed with variety of subjects represented in our films.” From its roots in New York 15 years ago, the BFF is now a multifaceted, global event that has travelled to over 60 cities around the world, from Quèbec to Quito, Moscow to Mexico City. It started when Brendt Barbur, the festival’s founding director, was hit by a bus while riding his bicycle. Despite days in hospital he wanted to turn this negative experience into something positive. The BFF Brighton team got together while riding to Paris during November 2014. “We all come from different countries and backgrounds, but it was on that freezing morning that we realized that there is one thing that unites us all – hunger for adventure and bikes.” Now the event seeks to encourage global participation and awareness of cycling and to help promote cycling across all forms, whilst bringing together local creative communities. The Brighton strand has worked closely with the festival’s New York headquarters to put together a programme that shows the whole spectrum of films that BFF can offer. “We tried to add films from all around the world. This year we bring a very special premier to Brighton: Personal Gold. It’s a film about the USA female cycling team’s pursuit of a medal at London 2012, following a blanket ban on the men’s team after Lance Armstrong’s revelations. It’s an underdog story of real passion and dedication towards a common goal in spite of all odds.” The festival goes beyond viewing cycling as a sport and brings together communities and individuals with similar views on life. The Brighton BFF opening event sees ONCA Gallery host Boneshaker lead writer Jet McDonald. He’ll present a multi-layered talk, applying philosophy to modern life and using the experience of a ride and the components of a bicycle to illustrate it.

Screening on Friday night, at the Duke Of York’s Picturehouse, will be Danielle Levitt’s portrait of BMXers in the Bronx Tribes, Bear - Nash Edgerton’s darkly comedic spiral of bad decisions and Damian Vondrasek’s beautifully odd The Meeting. There’s also Jean-Marc Joseph’s Cycling Circle, Orlando von Einsiedel’s King Of The Mountain, Jesse Ayles’ Revelations and Alex Rankin’s Hack Bike Derby. “The Duke of York’s is the nation’s coolest cinema. It’s also the UK’s oldest working cinema having been in constant operation since 1910. When planning BFF Brighton 2016 we all agreed the Duke’s was our dream venue. A fantastic place - we can’t wait to see our programme on their screen.” Saturday’s offerings include Christian Mülhauser’s moonlit downhill ride at Matterhorn in Moonriders, In Search Of The Storm by Shaktiraj Singh Jadeja – a story of a biking expedition in the dead of the Himalayan winter and Cranks by Kyo-Min Jung and Tom Wichelow which looks at a bike repair shop run by volunteers in Brighton. Joining these are Izhar Cardboard Bicycle Project by Giora Kariv, Thom Heald’s Up Up Up and Lucas Brunelle Goes To Chernobyl, a two wheeled exploration of the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Elsewhere across the weekend, there’s a photography exhibition from local curators Miniclick, a discovery ride around town organised by Rule 5 bikes and an after party at BLEACH with BeNothing, headlined by eccentric-core synth-punks, AK/DK. A rise in profile for professional cycling has helped; ambassadors like Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy and Peter Sagan inspire huge interest in the sport. Whilst the recent boom in the cycling lifestyle is down to many factors, an overriding attraction is its pure accessibility. “People might ride bikes to commute to work or to travel across continents. It can be very affordable and often a much more attractive option than driving. It’s always a great feeling sailing past all those cars stuck in a traffic jam on Kings Road on any given weekend in Brighton.” The Brighton strand of the Bicycle Film Festival comes to the Duke of York’s Picturehouse, and venues across the city, on Thurs 14 – Sat 16 July. www.bicyclefilmfestival.com/brighton www.facebook.com/bicyclefilmfestival

ubyk With so much of the retail world dominated by online trading it’s rare for a business to reverse the trend and open a physical store. But that’s exactly what cycle specialists Ubyk have done. As they say on their website they like to do things a little differently, and that extends beyond bringing their shopping experience to the high street. Even both of their shops look different to what you’d expect from a bike retailer. Friendly and modern, they take a new approach to displaying their product which almost elevates each item into a work of art. “You’re selling high end stuff, so the whole experience has got to be like that,” owner James Heath explains. “I’m quite creative, so in the shops there’s all kinds of music playing and artworks on the walls.” Over the years, specialist bikes have risen in price. But many shops have failed to present their stock as the prestige brands that they are. What Heath has done at Ubyk is to present stock in a way that shows off its magnificent engineering. The company offering lines by De Rosa, Eddy Merckx, Parlee, Colnago, Cinelli, Scapin, Argon 18, Orro, Yeti, Santa Cruz, Cube, Charge, Scott, Evil, Orange, Ghost, Nukeproof and Singular, many of these manufacturers place as much emphasis on beauty of design as pure functionality. The visual impact of their products, many of which are custom built, adds to the ambience of the stores. “You want those bikes to stand out on [their] own and not be cluttered amongst loads of others. I’d rather people saw them properly and had a nice experience shopping.” Positioning customer service at the core of the operation further enhances the distinctive shopping experience in their Brighton and Oxford shops. The belief is that treating the customer as an individual will produce a bike that meets every requirement. Previously running a design agency in London, Heath produced plenty of website builds for his clients. After a while he found himself drifting into other aspects of their businesses. After learning so much about e-commerce he wanted to develop his own online business that was something special. Then one night he struck upon the idea of building a site where a customer could design their own bike online from a huge choice of high-end components. “I threw myself in at the deep end. I sold my business and set up Ubyk online as a visual bike builder…” His platform enables visitors to visually customise a unique ride, watch informative videos on the parts, and see the weight and price alter with the specifications of the bike. This online visual bike

builder remains biggest part of Heath’s business, with sister sites in Australia, France, Sweden and one more developing for the Spanish market. About three years ago, with some encouragement from his suppliers, he opened a shop in Oxford. His customers are fanatical about cycling. So the company have to offer a similarly enthusiastic level of customer service and plenty of options for creating something unique. Now a branch has opened on Brighton’s Sydney Street to meet growing demand. Cycling has blossomed in recent years. This is partly down to fuel pricing and the freedom from parking restrictions it offers, but people also recognise the health benefits it offers. There’s little point in being stuck in a box-like gym when you could be out on the road actually getting somewhere. Mountain Bike parks in this country also have their parts to play. “Like ski resorts in other countries, we’ve got loads of mountain bike trail-centres. They’ve become massively popular. You struggle to get into the car parks of many of them at the weekend.” He concedes that launching the company was initially a big risk, but says the alternative was to carry on doing something that didn’t satisfy him. “I think if other people are doing jobs they’re not buzzed about anymore, they should just go and do what they want to do. It is hard, the first two years were the hardest of my life.” Although he’s a long way from the career he trained for, it’s not so far from where his passions lie. As a kid he was always into cycling. He’d do up bikes in his garage then sell them to boost his pocket money. “It’s an ongoing thing really. I’ve done my design career and then come back again!” Ubyk is at 24 Sydney St, Brighton, BN1 4EN. www.ubyk.co.uk

Just like many other Japanese role-playing games, he and his friends find themselves swept up in events far greater than themselves. As with the past Star Ocean games, fantasy and science fiction seamlessly meld together in a unique and rich narrative. There’s been a few tweaks in the franchise’s mechanics, including new looks at how skills work and a reimagining of dynamics within the battle system. Players will embark into a new world of experiences, feeling the same awe and excitement as their heroes as they expand the limits of imagination.

Based on the long-running JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series, Eyes of Heaven brings a 3D fighting game to the franchise. You can either act as a single player or online tag-team, battling in vivid and expansive arenas based on the manga’s locations. It’s bright, frenetic and fun-packed, making a welcome addition to the fighting genre. Characters are categorised by their fighting styles, including Hamon, Ogre Street Techniques, Vampiric, German Science, Mode, Stand and Mounted. This type of game can be an acquired taste, but fans of the format will find the combat fluid and pleasing to control, perfectly capturing the distinctive style of this popular manga world. If you’re bored of endless puzzle solving and just want to bash some opponents, then prepare to do battle!

CARMAGEDDON: MAX DAMAGE FRI 8 JULY PS4, XBOX ONE Widely condemned and censored around the world on its debut outing almost 20 years ago, Carmageddon gets another bloody and high-octane revision. A driving sensation where pedestrians (and a few cows) equal points and your fiercest opponents are a bunch of crazies, this is the perfect antidote to dull driving sims. There’s a new adrenaline pumping stack of game modes ready to push your skills to the limit. There’s also a wide and varied range of cool, crazy, custom killing machines; each is specifically built for the job in hand – wrecking opponents and killing pedestrians. No matter how intense the action, the Action Replay System, with multiple cameras and replay options means you never miss a pile-up again. Beep! Beep! Coming through…

BATMAN: RETURN TO ARKHAM FRI 29 JULY PS4, XBOX ONE The world’s greatest detective gets a new sharper look, as both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City receive nextgen graphic renderings. Alongside the full versions of these titles, gamers will also be able to lap up their complete DLC offerings in one single package. Arkham Asylum sees the Dark Knight trapped in a facility with The Joker and some ruthless thugs. Arkham City meanwhile has our hero face off against nearly all of his deadliest foes amongst Gotham’s urban jungle. Both titles feature excellent combat, clever use of gadgets and intelligent map layouts, which made them stand out from a crowded market. It could be time to don the cape once more.

GHOSTBUSTERS

THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR

MON 11 JULY

FRI 15 JULY

“Who you gonna call?” [Journalist cliché #2506] Whether you’re excited or dreading the reimagining of this supernatural comedy classic, there’s no denying you’re not interested. Now the ladies are in charge of dealing with New York City’s hauntings. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones form a capable cast which undoubtedly do the original proud. After landing prestigious teaching position at Columbia University, a writer’s book about ghosts resurfaces and she is forced out of academia. When ethereal invaders hit Manhattan, she unites with a fellow author, a nuclear engineer and a subway worker to save the world from a mysterious evil and powerful demon. The purists might sneer, but there’s plenty to love here.

The third instalment in The Purge sci-fi horror series sees us return to its totalitarian version of the future, where America’s basest desires are allowed loose for one night a year. Promoted as a cathartic process, this night of violence has boosted the country’s prosperity at the expense of the vulnerable. Police sergeant Leo Barnes is back, this time looking after a promising Presidential candidate. She wants to end the Purge, after losing her family to it 15 years earlier. But the country’s New Founding Fathers aren’t going to give up this effective method of population control willingly. A violent futuristic take on 70s siege thrillers, it turns the spotlight away from lowly criminals to the privileged, and throwing in America’s issues with gun control for good measure.

STAR TREK BEYOND

FRI 22 JULY

WEDS 27 JULY

With a screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, this epic space-exploration drama gets another outing. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as Captain Kirk and Commander Spock, with Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella joining the crew. Directed by Justin Lin, who helmed three The Fast and the Furious titles, it carries on with JJ Abrams’ bold reboot of the series. The USS Enterprise’s crew are halfway into a fiveyear mission, when they are attacked by an unstoppable wave of aliens. Forced to abandon ship, its crew find themselves stranded with no means of rescue. To make matters worse they clash with a ruthless enemy, who has a hatred of the Federation and all it stands for.

Matt Damon takes a break from being the go-to guy if you need an abandoned astronaut, to reprise his incredibly popular intelligence operative role. Several years after he exposed the CIA programme that created him, Jason Bourne resurfaces. But now the world is faced with unprecedented instability, and only our protagonist kicking some bad guys in the head will bring about a solution. This sequel also sees the return of the sublime Paul Greengrass. it’s going to be another non-stop thriller packed with running, jumping, punching and shooting, only letting up for the occasional meaningful stare. The team who completely redefined espionage thrillers are back, and there’ll be little let-up for anybody involved.

glazed GIVE US A RING By Freya Hughes

Skateboards clattering against ramps like a much louder dawn chorus, hulahoopers punctuating the grass like swaying trees… you can romanticise The Level all you want but honestly, the real talent is across the road. Enter Glazed, the new coffee and vegan doughnut extraordinaires. The simplicity of their homemade produce and décor alike fits into this area of Brighton seamlessly. Heading in one morning, I found a spot nestled between a family and some trendy young things. Glazed is a café for anyone and everyone, as is clear by the friendly greeting of the owners. Light-coloured walls decorated with unique decks, some with ‘café’ enscribed next to a doughnut image, and special pieces of art nod to the easy-going lifestyle associated with skateboarding. A compact site, owner James Brightmore has used it to his advantage making it feel airy and spacious. Perhaps we can thank the classic high ceilings this city lends us for this as well. Settling down on a rustic table, a friend and I order some of the gorgeous tasting and perfectly made coffees. Changing their blends frequently, James and partner Eva keep their customers guessing. Currently Dr Strangelove Espresso by Extract Coffee, it’s made with a balance of acidity and sweetness. Don’t get me wrong, I love coffee but often struggle to pick out flavours in it. Therefore, let me borrow some descriptive words from the lovely Extract Coffee chaps themselves: “a subtle almond nuttiness, biscuit, and berries combine to create sweet frangipane and sticky blackberry jam.” So there you go. I was more interested in the presentation as James’ coffee skills are quite unmatched. My latte (£2.70), with a double heart design on top, was as smooth as it gets. We were very pleased that Glazed also stocks soya milk, as my coffee buddy was more of a soya kind of girl. For a flat white it’s just £2.50 and its consistency was spot on. Just next to the flashy coffee machine sat more doughnuts than I’ve ever seen in one go. Although Glazed offers even more different glazes on the weekends, we were spoilt for choice on our modest Tuesday morning. We choose one of each flavour, as it would be rude not to: raspberry and chocolate, peanut butter, and chocolate and coconut. Making their doughnuts vegan comes from simply replacing some of the key ingredients: egg becomes bicarbonate of soda and soy butter is used. As a slightly healthier option, James and Eva also opt for olive oil over vegetable oil, though of course there’s only so much ‘health’ that can be related to doughnuts. This aside, we got to tasting. Beginning with the raspberry and chocolate, our stomachs growled at the sight of the ringed wonders. The sweetness of the fruit and chocolate complimented each other perfectly. The raspberry flavour wasn’t lost at all to its manmade counterpart, which delighted us both. On to the peanut butter. As a kid I had a really strange phobia of this stuff (God knows why), to the extent that I’d throw it away if I so much as saw a jar of it. Yes, total weirdo I know, my sister has not let me forget it. Anyway,

I hesitantly bit into the doughnut. The chunks of real nuts and buttery all-round taste of the glaze went so perfectly with the doughnut itself that it was actually my favourite of the lot! Our final frontier came in the form of the chocolate and coconut glaze. A winning combination as usual, the rich dark chocolate was lifted by the crunch of the sprinkled coconut. Following our sugar and caffeine overload, a pretty hectic thunderstorm erupted. Forced to stay for just one more coffee, we kicked back and enjoyed the soft hum of other customers chatting. We figured we’d be much safer in the café, surrounded by sweet treats. With weekend pop ups of live music and street food planned for the future, Glazed is certainly one to watch. Nodding to The Level in many ways, this fantastic addition to the area is perfect for any walk of life. So get down there, get a coffee, and get Glazed. Glazed is at 25 Ditchling Road, Brighton, BN1 4SB. www.facebook.com/glazedcoffeeco Instagram @glazed_coffee

Years before some council planning department marked London Road as the next street suitable for gentrification, Eastern Eye marked its spot with a rich offering of southern Indian cuisine. Without need for shiny exposed pipes, ripped out ceilings or vintage signage, this eatery appears unassuming in a street lined with £13 burgers, artisan pizzerias and a long line of gastro pubs offering wings, ribs or burgers with triple-cooked chips. However, what has kept this place busy is its flavour in dishes and attitude alike. The pace is unrushed; the staff make sure you are looked after without a false pretense. We felt welcome here. Not a bad start. Settling down with friends, we munched through the mixed poppadoms and dips as we scanned the menu for treats. We kicked off with the Lasooni Chicken Tikka, rolled in fresh mint and garlic (£4.80) and the Fish Shami Kebab, consisting of pan-grilled white fish flakes and lentil patties (£4.75). We also ordered herb infused and pan-fried King Prawn Achari (£5.80) and the Lamb Chilli Fry which was superbly marinated in shallots, green chillies, curry leafs and fresh ginger (£4.75). It became clear straight away Eastern Eye’s handle on fish is superior. The prawns were perfectly balanced with their batter; the lentils lifted the delicate, soft fish as well, giving a good variety of textures. We were all equally heatproof on our table, as we found out when trying the lamb. It certainly packed a punch, but in a way that kept us going back for more, much to my dining partner’s annoyance as we collectively cleared his starter from in front of him. Cue muttered discussions about why we have to share when eating Asian food. Look, this is vital journalism, I insist. We taste for a whole city here. Hedging his bets he had ordered the best main too, he started to take territory on the table. Glasses were moved. Napkins become battlements. Things got tense. After a break to digest, cool down and taste the red wine (rich, delicious and reasonably priced) we got onto politics and ganged up on the owner of the Lamb Shank, a dedicated BREMAIN voter, and expressed our (his) views on why the sharing economy and the single market matter more than his own personal Lamb Shank. We needn’t have worried. The Lamb Shank Narendra (£10.50) arrives in its entire splendor and there is plenty to share. And may I take this opportunity to thank the gods that there is. The lamb is so wonderful it practically offers itself from the bone to you. The caramelised onion, roasted garlic, bay leaves and black pepper sauce explores every inch of the meat. The flavours hit as if politely queuing for your attention – at times sweet then succulent, sharp then soft. The roasted garlic sits in your mouth for minutes after eating. Sublime.

I pitched for the Mangalore Prawn Curry (£8.95), which was equally as lovely – the coconut set the tone for the fish. Just the right amount of power from each component balanced the dish. I’ll say it again: this restaurant’s expertise in prepping and cooking fish is unparalleled. I meandered through the curry with support from some exquisite lemon and ginger rice whilst my more adventurous friend opted for the Karaikudi Nandu Kozahumbu (£9.85). Not just a mouthful to say but an impressive braised crab dish that demands a fight to get to the good stuff (watch out for the claws). However, she fought on and assured me how soft and flavoursome the protein was. It wouldn’t have been my first choice but I think that says something more about my inherent laziness to fight clawto-claw. Nonetheless, I happily munched through her punchy Aloo Jerra (£3.90) while she got her fingers messy. Once we came to the end of our meal, owner Murrali joined us with eyes full of passion for his food and well-used chef whites. We quized him on the sauces for each dish (bespokely tailored for each one) and his history. He set up Eastern Eye after a decadelong stint at the much-lauded Chutney Mary restaurant in Kings Road, London (recently moved to St James’ Street in the West End). Chutney Mary paved the way for contemporary Indian cuisine back in 1990 and arguably invented the rich and flavoursome world of food we now take for granted in every city in this country. We are lucky to have Murrali and we are lucky to have Eastern Eye in Brighton. It doesn’t shout too loud, nor cause a fuss. It is something to be cherished and savoured. Eastern Eye is at 58 London Road, Brighton, BN1 4JE. www.easterneyerestaurant.co.uk
