WELCOME TO STARS DEAR FRIENDS OF STARS, Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway November 24, 1950 and ran for 1200 performances. At 8 shows a week, that’s 150 weeks or almost three years. It won five Tony awards including the Best Actor and Best Actress awards, Choreography, and the coveted Best Musical award. It was selected as the winner for the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. However, since writer Abe Burrows’ troubles with the House Un-American Activities Committee, Columbia University vetoed the selection and no award for drama was given that year. (This according to Wikipedia, but I confirmed it from other sources as well).

In 1955 the film adaptation was made starring Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons, Vivian Blane and Marlon Brando. I love that film, but I can never get over the fact that Marlon Brando seems very uncomfortable singing – or maybe it’s just me that’s uncomfortable.

The 1992 Broadway revival starring Nathan Lane and Faith Prince ran for 1142 performances and earned Tony nominations for both, but only Prince would take away the award for her portrayal of Adelaide. The musical also won the Tony award for Best Revival of a Musical – a true testament to its staying power.

In our effort to pepper our seasons with both the “new” and “old”, I am very excited that we chose Guys and Dolls for this year’s season. And I am equally excited to see it in the able hands of director/choreographer Shay Brandon Burke. Lady Luck is certainly with us tonight.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE WELC OME GU YS A N D D OL LS, When I asked our artistic director, Bruce Saathoff, if I could direct Guys and Dolls I had a few numbers in mind that I was itching to put on the Stars Stage again. I knew that “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” “The Crap Shooters Dance,” and the Hot Box girls would all be fun to choreograph. As we rehearsed the show I realized why Guys and Dolls is a classic. Not only are there great musical numbers, but also much more I had overlooked. The transformation of Sarah and Sky, the quick wit and oneliners of Adelaide and Nathan, and the witty supporting characters all shine in our production. I have had fun helping the cast bring this show to life. I hope you have fun watching them do so. A big thank you to our team, Kathi, Greg, Liz and Julie.

ABOUT THE PLAYERS C OD Y GA RC IA (SKY MA STERSON) — Cody is delighted to

be returning to the Stars stage with such a devoted and charming cast!

His most prized theater credits include Hairspray (Link Larkin), Y ou’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (Linus), Damn Yankees (Rocky), Curtains (Aaron), and Grease (Danny Zuko). He’s also enjoyed dancing in the productions of A Chorus Line, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and, Kiss of the Spiderwoman. Cody is extremely grateful for Shay, Char, Julie and Liz for all of the hard work and commitment they have given to bring this timeless classic to life, and would particularly like to thank his parents, as well as his on and off-stage “doll” Bethany Rowlee for their continual love and support. In the future, Cody plans on pursuing his degree in Public Relations and will be choreographing Frontier High's production of Catch Me If Y ou Can next spring.

BETH A NY ROWLEE (SA RA H BROWN) — Bethany last appeared on the Stars stage in 5 Divas. She is also director of the Great Songs weekend series at Stars. Favorite Stars/BMT credits include The Producers (Ulla), SHOUT!: (Blue Girl), Oliver! (Nancy), The Drowsy Chaperone (Janet Van De Graaf), A Chorus Line (Cassie), Chicago (Velma Kelly), and Grease (Sandy). Other stage credits include The Nutcracker with Civic Dance and numerous productions at Seattle Pacific University, of which she is a graduate. Offstage, Bethany is a glass mosaic artist, and also plays guitar and sings in the praise team at Laurelglen Bible Church.

KELC I LOWRY (MISS A D ELA ID E) — Kelci began in theatre at the tender age of 5. Since then she has performed in productions including Beehive: The Sixties Musical, SHOUT! (Yellow Girl), Fox on the Fairway (Louise), Damn Yankees (Lola), and Barefoot in the Park (Corie Bratter). At age 13, Kelci began a television and film career, landing roles in commercials and starring in two feature films.

Her passions for dance has led her to choreographing at Stars for 5 years. Now at age 23 she is working at Bessie Owens Intermediate as an Activity Leader for Music Dance Theatre with the fabulous Frank Sierra. She would like to thank everyone that has helped make this show happen, as we as her amazing boyfriend for all the love and support — “I love you, babe.”

HAL FRIED MA N (NA TH A N D ETROIT) — Hal is just happy to

be in Guys and Dolls. At Stars he has directed Evita and Company and recently appeared in Sunset Boulevard (Joe Gillis). Hal is the founder of The Hot Spot Theatre Troupe which provides Bakersfield a new kind of theatrical experience — www.hotspottheatre.com. His novel Afterwinds is available on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble. He hopes everyone enjoys the show. Love to his three kids Ellie, Carter, and Isla.
